    Coincidentally I was watching a video about negative retouchers and printers earlier this week and was amazed by the amount of work that went into it - artwork in itself. Whilst the leaps and bounds forward with digital imaging have made us all retouchers, it is a shame to think that the skill of doing it may be lost completely in the not too distant future. In depth and fascinating look at this camera James. The ingenuity and thought that went into it with the different light syncs and the magnifying glass popping out, a camera to be appreciated for the genius of its engineering

      Negative retouchers and airbrush artists. Amazing talents for sure. A Softar filter helped loads too!
      I was thrilled beyond belief when that Mamiya C220 dropped in my lap. That roll of Fomapan I loaded is still in the camera, waiting to capture some images. I’ll be taking her out in the field next weekend for some street photography.

    I just picked one of these up at the Professional Photographers' of Pennsylvania Fall Convention. I haven't paid for it yet, the seller gave me a chance to run a roll of film through it 1st. I too love square format and I am so excited to see how this camera works. Your information will help me a lot... I generally shoot my Yashica D, and when I saw this for sale I got pretty excited... I subscribed so that I can check out more of your videos! Great job showing the functions!

    Hey, great video. I’m shooting a Mamiya C3 (1962-1965). It’s about the same camera and it uses the same lenses. The only thing I heard in your video is the part where you use the belly zoom. The numbers appearing next to the lens sizes aren’t there to show you how to control your parallax effect but the numbers tell you the exposure compensation you need to apply to get the right amount of light on the film as the lens is getting further away from the film. (At least that’s what I’ve been told and how I do for close up pictures) In my case I have lines on the glass you see through which tell me the parallax correction. In the C220 I thought the system was build in the « view finder ». Please tell me if I’m wrong…

    • @VintageInsightPhotography
      @VintageInsightPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
      The scale on the side of the C220 has dual purposes:
      1) Exposure compensation due to bellows extension, and
      2) a scale for roughly adjusting parallax when shooting close up.
      For instance, when the scale indicates that the exposure needs to be increased by 1.5 or 2 stops, there are corresponding lines in the focusing screen that indicate the top of the frame. When the exposure compensation is 3 stops, the top of the frame is roughly the center of the ground glass.
      The C330 had a red indicator under the focusing screen that moved as the bellows were extended to show the top of the frame.
      Enjoy that C3! Mamiya twin lens cameras are great!

    • @VintageInsightPhotography
      @VintageInsightPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lemon58421 , your last comment about the RZ didn’t post. ☹️
      I owned one in the mid 1980’s. The advance system kept breaking on mine. The RB67 had a shutter cocking mechanism on the body, and the film advance was on the film back. So, a double crank after taking the shot. The RZ with an RZ back (as you know) cocked the shutter and advanced the film with a single crank on the body lever. Mine couldn’t stand up to the volume I was shooting. I bought some RB backs, but the RZ body gave me fits. I sold it and went to Hasselblad and never looked back.
      I photographed about 500 clients every year, and never had equipment failure. A 500ELM in the studio, and a 500 c/m in the field. I almost cried when I sold the system in 1990.

    I've got 2 of the c220f cameras with a full set of lenses. Not used them for a few years, but am itching to get them out again with some HP5. Been shooting digital for a good few years, but digital photography isn't as enjoyable somehow. I like the process of having to load film, wind on, take light meter readings, manually focus, move levers to set aperture and shutter and fire a mechanical shutter - and no batteries to recharge! . It's just more satisfying than having a battery operated camera, with menus and auto focus etc. Both have a place, of course, but the old-fashioned way is far more engaging. Thanks for the wonderful run through of this great camera system.

    Good work here. I liked your use of coloured lights for the videography. That added some welcome drama and looked really great.
    Nitpicking time: Whether the film is 120 or 220, the film is pressed firmly against the "film gate" with it's precision-machined rails. The pressure plate has nothing to do with a change in focal plane position between 120/220. [The focal plane is coincident with the plane defined by the film gate.
    If the film backing paper was 1 centimetre thick, the film substrate would still be in the same position - - pushed tightly against the film gate. The pressure plate switchover from 120/220 is presumably to handle the differing thickness of the backing paper vs. lack of backing paper -- and maintaining the same pressure of film substrate against the "film gate".
