    It's refreshing to watch videos about photography that are made by someone nice and not cocky, arrogant or trying to be the coolest. Thanks for bringing honesty. The photos of your project are awesome. You earned a new subscriber.

    Wow, you can tell this guy is an artist by the way he thinks about composition. Really helpful advice about how to shoot for the square format.
    When I shot wedding photographs for a studio in the 1980's the owner never wanted me to compose for a square photo since he preferred to print rectangular formats. He never wanted me to frame a 6x6 exposure tightly because that didn't give him the leeway to find the best crop when he printed the final photo in a rectangular format. He always cropped the image, especially since the resolution of medium format film was so high.
    I just mention this for folks who think 6x6 is too limiting. I look at 6x6 as giving you freedom to frame the final image either as a square, vertical or horizontal photo later in post depending on how you decide to crop it. Just try to stand a little further away from your subject when taking the initial exposure.

    Hi Eduardo, I've just started shooting film about 3 months ago and have been enjoying your videos, and really enjoyed the 30 day project. I appreciate you sharing your experiences and you've got me interested in picking up a Mamiya C330. Thanks Eduardo :)

    Awesome conclusion to the series Ed! Really really enjoyed hearing about how you learned to compose differently in terms of 3D space between medium format and 35mm--we are still relatively new to the 35mm but at some point in the near future I'd love to branch out and start exploring medium format as well, maybe with a pentax 67... or a hasselblad. I've been leaning towards the pentax for the last 6 months but I think I'm going to wait it out and keep improving with the 35mm before we invest in a pricier system. Anyways, congrats on finishing the project! Must be such a nice feeling to have all those rolls and see through the physical images how your mentality and style adapted and grew : ) Looking forward to meeting soon! ----Lou

    Really enjoyed the series. And this video. I've been messing around with the square format lately myself, and I don't really like it that much. Even on my Instagram feed, I ensure all the photos I put boarders around the photos to maintain the aspect ratio. Maybe I have been thinking the wrong way too. I'll see if the layers way of thinking can change how I feel about square format.
    Many thanks. Hope you're enjoying the last days of summer.

    On the street it’s not about them or the camera, it’s about you: are you comfortable in the situation? Do you enjoy the environment? If you are and do it’s generally fine. Do you have a focus, a reason to be there? Some people are always gonna object so let it slide. If you’re having fun others will generally respond well.

    Congrats on completing your 30 day project man! Big props to you! I have my Rolleiflex medium format now for almost 3 years and I think I only shot about 17 rolls on it. I also am discovering something new on my Rolleiflex that I never knew on my initial use. It is harder to compose on a square format from my experience, and I also feel like I stand out more when shooting on the streets even though I'm looking down. Looking forward on you shoot film episode. Cheers and happy shooting!

    Great video. I used the Mamiya C series in studio. Sometimes on location. I saw only the 80mm. Ya gotta try other lenses. Compared to Hasselblad, they're affordable. I used 65mm (55 not yet introduced) the 135mm (borrowed) and the 180mm( mine was too sharp!) It was used for portraits! The Porroflex a waste of time! Get the prism. I preferred the waist level. Less weight,! The Mamiya can be loaded on a tripod, get a heavy one! Very big plus on Mamiya and Pentax 6x7 is straight line of film. No turns. Hasselblad too many turns, can affect sharpness for last exposures. Need to wait on Rollei and Hassie for film to get flat with pressure plate. Built in shutters not always equal speeds. Learn which is slower which is faster. Live with it! mark with tape .The focusing with either hand is perfect. Now I use a Rollei and finding focus knob irritating. Enjoy Multi exposures! The screen was very bright and easy to see. Bravo, Make great photos.

    I loved what you said about tension lines and flow in composition. I completely agree. My crutch is that I shoot a lot of 6x7, so I relate to the 3d compositions, but I still have some elongation to stretch the lines. Anyway, what you said really resonated with me. Thanks for an awesome series!

      He means that the picture is a square. Medium format also has other aspect ratios.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      "medium format" is the size of the film.
      "square format" is the squared aspect ratio: 1:1
      you can shoot square format in 6x6 medium format or you can shoot it in 35mm with a camera that produces squared images, like a diana, for example!

When I developed all the film the shots that I spent a great deal of time focusing on with the magnifier where all out of focus wither by a meter or 30cm. Has this ever happened to you? and what could it possibly be? I am too scared to send another roll of film through it and I am aching to use this camera its killing me!!!!! help!!!

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that never happened to me. If you are 100% sure you focused correctly, then you need to send your camera for repair. The lens from which you compose and the one for taking pictures must be missaligned.

      Patrick Odoherty My Mamiya C220 started prefocusing. This had to dealt with by a knowledgable tech. The place shims in the focusing screen, which in this camera is fixed. In the case of the C330 the foam in the focusing screen might have rotted to the point of altering focus. Perhaps you should quote the repair before committing to it and to bring the pictures to your tech!

    Amen to all of this. I think my favorite part of these videos (and this one in particular) is the sincerity you bring to everything. Even though I shoot and write for a living, I find your dedication, enthusiasm, and generosity with your headspace to be genuinely refreshing. I'm just beginning to shoot square format this past year and it's been both unnerving and exhilarating! Do more medium format stuff, it makes it all so incredibly rewarding!

  • @jimkamradt8387
    @jimkamradt8387 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Edward, I use to shoot weddings with the C220, same camera just didn't have as many features. Square format covers all composition possibilities. If you want a rectangle print stand further back, compose for it and print accordingly. With square format you don't have to flip the camera. Find a eye level view finder, it will reduce the awkwardness of the camera. We used to do double and triple exposures, that's why this camera allows it. NOTHING beats a negative this big, it has a richness digital never will. Enjoy Jim

    Agree on the square composition problem, you have to go deep, not wide or everything comes out looking like a portrait. I find square phone images (or square small sensor camera shots) are more successful than my medium format ones, because the massive depth of field enables subjects from a couple of feet to infinity to be pin sharp. This gives striking juxtapositions that don't rely on the dynamics of an oblong frame for their effect.

¡Abrazo!

    I loved your observations on the camera and focusing and I want to play with what you said about layering. I have an old C2 and I am not very good with it. Looking to improve and need to practice. Very cool!

    Watch this video from beginning to end.... the composition discussion starting at 13:05 to 16:30 are 3.5 minutes well spent.

    Very cool project. I especially enjoyed your insights on composition. Was there a reason you increased the development time towards the end?

      Ah, that makes perfect sense. I've been using one shot developers so long that I forgot. Your results looked pretty consistent throughout.
