- I can't recognize the difference between Czech and Slovakian. For me Czech and Slovakian sound the same :)
What about Slovenian? Is Slovenian similar to Slovakian?
And Russian vs Ukrainian? Are these two Slavic languages the same?

I am Slovak, so obviously I can easily recognize Czech, it is almost like a second native language (passively). I recognized quite easily also Polish, it sounds very cute. Russian and Ukranian sound really similar to me, but I did recognized them in this video - Ukranian sounds a little more closer to Slovak, but I can't say what it is. I thought Slovenian was Bosnian and Bosnian was Slovenian. Very interesting video, thank you!

Ukrainian is indeed a lot more similar to SLovak, then SLovak is to Russian. In fact Ukrainian and Slovak languages are linked via the Carpatho Rusyn language. Some Eastern Slavic dialects are nearly identical to the Western most Eastern Slavic tongue...Bosnian sounded weird to me, ive heard Croatian and Serbian before, they sounded fine. But when the young man was speaking Bosnian it sounded mad strange to me..

If you read a text and it contains ř, ů or ě, it is a Czech text, if it contains ä, ľ, ĺ, ŕ or ô, it is a Slovak text. Slovak sounds softer, often uses ia, ie, etc.

I am Slovak and I have no problem understanding Slavonic languages.
When I hear Czech language it sounds like medieval polish poetry. Amazing. I'd love to learn Czech.

I'm Slovenian and I can only understand CRO BIH SRB, Montenegro and North Macedonia are a little bit difficult. But Russian I don't understand a word.

CM V Yes and no. Today 99% Ukrainians and Belarusians know COMPLETELY Russian language when Russians know Ukrainian and Belarusian very bad even nothing.

As a Croat I understand Bosnian perfectly (what a miracle haha) and can recognize Russian and Slovenian here. Of course, for me it is impossible to say which is Russian and which is Ukranian. Polish, Czech and Slovak sound quite similar to me and I don't understand much, ok, maybe I understand Slovak bit more between these 3 languages. In general it seams to me that among the eastern Slavic languages I find most similar words to Croatian in Russian. Since we lived with Slovenia in Yugoslavia and I went there a lot and read Slovenian literature I can understand Slovenian conversation almost completely.

JEST NAJTRUDNIEJSZY, jeśli miałbyś uczyć się go od zera - lingwiści są pod tym względem zgodni. Czytanie jest łatwo przyswajalne, ale ze względu na również rozbudowaną ortografię z milionem wyjątków, jeżeli nie jesteś native polish, to nigdy nie opanujesz tego języka w pełni w mowie i w piśmie.

It was a pleasure to take part in this project. It kind of amaze me from responses and comments of people how Czech language feels unidentifiable with Slovak language because I dare to say that Slovak is a lot softer than Czech. Yet you and other people are very right about how similar these languages are in terms of vocabulary, grammar, etc. Real challenge for me was Bosnian lang.. Russian and Ukrainian were ok as I used to learn Russian and visited Ukraine. What Slovenian sounds like was biggest surprise as I have never heard it before. Slovak is Bro (in this case cute Sis) language. Polish… Polish is Love.
At first I thought you were a Slovene, but then when you read three sentences I got that it was Czech and not Slovene :D And you are right, Slovak sounds a little bit softer than Czech, and they also have this "h" sound which is definitely different from Czech :-)
I recognized Czech by the sound of it, I've visited Czech many times. Slovak accent is more similar to Polish and I just returned from Slovakia. Understanding Slovakian is easier for me then Czech.
I'm learning Czech currently, exactly because of it's sound. In my opinion it's the most harsh, sharp and unique sounding slavic (or in general) language there is, which makes it so beautiful to me. I fell in love with your language as soon as I heard it for the first time 2 yrs ago. Since then I've been listening to a lot of Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian, Polish and Rusyn music and language. And still trying to figure out all these cultural differences and similarities. Especially between Czechia and Slovakia and everything about Rusyn culture, which is not nearly as present in CR as it is in SK, right? Also all the different dialects in CR. For the past weeks I've been listening to a lot of Moravian music and it really confuses me, because it's so much more like Slovak I feel than standard Czech! Much softer and very difficult to understand for someone whos studying standard Czech. Which is also why I only knew for sure my guess was right when you spoke a bit more in the second round and I heard the Ř and more of the sound of the language. But from the first one sentence I think I couldn't have differentiated it from Slovak, but maybe that's just because I've listented to so much Moravian dialect recently :) But I agree completely, standard Czech is a whole different world than Slovak sound-wise. To me (as a German who has no personal connections to any slavic language) Slovak sounds much more like Ukrainian, whereas Czech sounds extremely unique and if there's more sentences spoken, you really can't confuse it with any other language I think.

I am Serbian-Rusyn native speaker. In writing I can understand all slavic languages, but in spoken form I have problem with Polish and Russian. I can understand Russians when they speak slow. But to understand Poles they need to speak really, really slowly, because they have sounds that are very strange and incomprehensible to me.

It is sad that polish and czech aren't more used together. I think it is just about getting used to hearing the other language.
That's interesting you can understand Czech better than Slovak. Must be because of the particular dialect of Polish you speak? Polish in general is closer to Slovak than to Czech.

I confused Bosnian and Slovenian, and Slovak and Czech. Moreover, I did not realize that the last guy was speaking Polish.
But I understood quite a bit from all samples. For instance, what the Slovenian girl said sounded very similar to Czech or Slovak, although I recognized right away that it was neither of these languages (because of the use of g instead of h).
I would say that the differences in pronounciation and stress pattern between Slavic languages somewhat hide the obvious similarities.
I am Czech🇨🇿 but I was born near Polish borders 🇵🇱. When I was a child, I was watching a (polish) TV (TVP1, Polsat) so... I understand Polish language but I don't know Polish grammar 🤣. Czech And Slovak languages are the most similar same as Russian And Ukrainien. I understand more Slovenian than Bosnian. I don't understand Ukranian but many of my Polish And Slovak friends do.

Doufam, że opravdu rozumis polstine, stejne jako ja rozumim cestine, protoże jsem dival na ceskou TV jiż od detstvi a nekdy dokonce casteji neż na polskou, np. kdyż nektery Mundial v polske TV byl zakodovany :) Zatimco polska gramatika neni teżka, stejne jako ceska, jen mame takovy vzajemny (ackoli maly) problem, że silne stare zvyky z ceske gramatiky nejsou prilis pomocne v perfektne polske gramatice, stejne jako silne stare zvyky z polske gramatiky nejsou prilis pomocne v perfektne ceske gramatice :) A krome toho v nasich jazycich existuji jen nektere pismena/litery, ktere neexistuji v obou klavesnicich. Samozrejme kopirovani a vkladani jejich je możne a dokonce i snadne, jen je prilis casovo narocne, zvlaste v dlouhych komentarich. Ale podle mojeho nazoru vzajemna srozumitelnost bez perfekcionismu je o moc prakticnejsi a duleżitejsi neż zbytecny perfekcionism bez srozumitelnosti, dokonce jestli existuje mnoho samojmenovanych "profesoru" polonistiky ci bohemistiky, kteri tvrdi że je naopak :)

@@RichieLarpa no, I am not. :) I am so close to Polish borders that when there is a storm, my phone signal is polish (not Czech). :D This was a problem for me before. Because I called my friends from the Czech republic but I paid a "foreign" call.

@@aleksshine well from that language it came serbian, according to serbians who are SLAVINISED VLASCHS. While bosniaks are slavs who settled in 9 century. Serbs are likely people who migrate from Rumunia and adopt slavic language, thats something everyone know in Balkans..
not only that, they had rephorms of serbian language before 120 years, becouse before it, they speak with broken slavic language same like Scots who are Kelts and speak with english, but thats not their native language...

But it's quite hard, i'm not even Slavic, i'm Latin, a half italian and a half cuban, born and grew up in Italy, I'm not exactly the most advantaged person for
learn slavic languages😑
Just spend some time in any Slavic country and you will learn that language in the best way. Once you learn one Slavic language, you can easily pick any other.. I'm south slav myself and i've learned Russian quite fluently for less then a month :)
We have many workers from Romania and few from Cuba and Czech language is not problem for them, maybe you should try Czech and not Polish. :-) I think we have similar sounds and latin speakers can pronounce CH which is important because English speakers have problem with that.
Funny enough is that 2 Cuban guy coming to my house to work only new Cuban and Czech because of the communist days. Good thing my mom is Czech her self so she easily understood them
@_ Prestige I'm just saying Czech is much easier for latin speakers because we have similar sounds, almost same alphabet and no digraphs (we have hooks) so they can learn our alphabet in one hour or less (except Ř sounds). Learn Polish alphabet is much more diffucult and learn reading it costs many weeks because that SZCZRZ are very confusing. And we have not such tongue twisters with many softened letters in one word. So I am not saying Czech language is more usefull in word, it's not, neither Polish is not usefull in world. But Czech is definitely easier to learn. You have hard and soft softened letters and many unique crazy things. I don't understand why people think Czech is most diffucult language when I clearly see Polish is much more complicated. ;-)

Yes-yes, same to me , i'm ukranian ,and also know russian, it's very common in Ukraine . And after 2 weeks in Poland i could understand about 80-85% of polish. I can say that polish is a mix of ukranian and belorussian.

Yeah, I think it comes down to pronunciation and how the person speaks. I think I struggle to understand Slovak when it's spoken, because of how they pronounce the words. However, when I see it written, I can understand about 90%. I was writing back and forth with a Slovak girl, and we were both writing in our native languages and understood eachother about 90%.
I know we had some Czech and Slovak friends when I was a child, and we some how understood eachother. Though Czech is a little different. I also think a lot of it depends on the topic of the conversation. Ukrainian I can understand some song lyrics. I'm sure if I spent some in those countries, I would pick up the language quickly.
What a fun exercise! Great idea to hear different tongues of the same statement.

I am Czech.
Speak Czech, Russian and a little bit Slovak (it's really as Czech).
I understood all of them, but there are two really similar languages!
I am Polish and in my opinion:
Máš dobrý nástroj in Czech (tzn. Masz dobry instrument in Polish) and
Masz dobry nastrój in Polish (tzn. Máš dobrou náladu in Czech), but
'housle' in Czech means 'skrzypce' in Polish :)

OK, it wasn't that easy. I had no problem to understand Czech (100%). Polish (90%) and Slovenian (70%) were OK, Ukrainian and Russian (50%) were a little bit harder to understand (and to recognize) and Bosnian was the hardest one to understand (30%). Yes, I'm Slovak 😂 I've heard that slovak language is a slavic Esperanto - maybe that's why we (more or less) understand the rest of the slavic languages 🤷 I also have heard that Slovaks and Slovens were very long time ago one nation, but Hungarians destroyed that bunch and took them a part 🤷 anyway, great video, I had fun! 😂

Fascinating video! Thanks for that! :D Although I don't speak any Slavic language fluently and have nothing to do personally with any of them (I'm German) but am learning Czech currently, in the first clips I wasn't sure about Czech, if it was that or Slovak. The guess I had was right, but I only knew it for sure when the second clips started and I heard the Ř. Which makes Czech pretty easy to distinguish from all the other slavic languages and which is also one of the reasons I've started learning it - just because I love the harsh and sharp sound of this language so much. The uniqueness of this language, I feel. Interestingly enough though, from the first clips the only language I was sure about was Polish because of the Polish L with the wa sound (sorry, don't have Polish script on my laptop). At least I think that was what I heard. So I guess Polish and Czech both are pretty good to distinguish from the others and I'm sure if the Czech Ř would have been in the first round(or maybe it was and I missed it?), I would have been sure about both languages. But all the other ones I have absolutely no idea about. ;P But its such an interesting video. I love slavic language comparisons like this. :)
Finally! I’m glad you’re back! I thought they all sounded very different. Although I was right when I thought I knew who was Russian and who was Polish. They have distinct sounds. I may be wrong, or it may just be me but I think the language most similar sounding to Polish is Ukrainian. Even though they use the Cyrillic alphabet, a lot of things sound similar. But in this video, everyone sounded very unique!

Hello +Jernej Blatnik , I'm not Slavophone but I didn't recognise BCMS with the Bosnian guy (maybe I lost my habits with Serbian), I had the impression there were lot of "sh" and probably the "ij" sounds changed the words to me. Hearing the Slovenian girl , I had the impression the sounds were clear (clearer than the Bosnian guy), just a little bit as in Serbian.
Polish is easy to hear to non-Polish people because it's all "psh, j, ch, zh," [English spelling]

Most similar to Polish Language is : Belarusian , Slovak and Ukrainian. A 500-600 years ago Ukraina and Belarus was the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at that time language were mixing a lot.

That's why the languages of neighbouring Slavic countries have more in common than with further away countries. It's the result of the dialect continuum which is no longer as visible because of the interruption caused by the introduction of national languages.

The last sentence is very unclear i can only imagine that it means something like "they are half polish half slovak" it's so hard becouse "nariece" doesn't sound like "dialekt" by any mean (pol. dialect). "maju" sounds a little bit like "mieć" (pol. to have).
if i had to translate it into english i would do this in such way:
"In north part of Slovakia there are people who are speaking this half-polish, half-slovak language. ???"

Well I'm from Serbia and I had some difficulties to recognize between Slovak and Czech, but others I could easily separate. For bosnian I can understand 10/10 bcs it's pretty much the same language, with different dialect (serbian/bosnian/croatian)

Dziękuję Panie Dariuszu za ciekawy materiał. Jako że w sumie to jestem słowiańskim geekem, problemów z rozróżnieniem który język jest który nie było :D. Może gdyby doszły tu jeszcze chorwacki, serbski, macedoński i bułgarski wtedy byłoby mi trudniej. Białoruski rozpoznałbym i zrozumiał bez problemu. Bardzo trafnie wybrany tekst, dzięki któremu widać podobieństwa między słowiańskimi językami. Proponowałbym nagrać coś o języku międzysłowiańskim ang. interslavic language mdsł. medžuslovjanski jezyk który to właśnie opiera się na słowach które w większości języków słowiańskich brzmią prawie tak samo/identycznie i znaczą to samo, czyli w praktyce to taki "prasłowiański" naszych czasów. Podsumowując prymitywna konwersacja między Słowianami, nawet gdy będą rozmawiać każdy w swoim ojczystym języku jest możliwa ,ale trzeba mieć bogaty zasób słownictwa (słownictwo literackie/archaiczne) Pozdrawiam :)
Witam Pana Adolfa. I to jest właśnie to o czym mówiłem od dawna. Pan się znasz na językach słowiańskich, dlatego rozumienie innych języków słowiańskich nie stanowi większego problemu. A ja prawie popadałem w depresję, że wszyscy rozumieją bliźniacze języki, a ja nie.
No grunt to się nie bać tylko słuchać, czytać, analizować itd. Wiadomo że inaczej będziemy rozmawiali w gronie np. polaków a inaczej z turystą z jakiegoś słowiańskiego kraju, po prostu trzeba mówić językiem prostym pozbawionym slangu i potocyzmów, jeżeli coś nie będzie zrozumiałe to znaleźć synonim albo wyjaśnić całym zdaniem no i przede wszystkim mówić baardzo powoli, żeby się w tym wszystkim nie pogubić. A gdy już wszystko zawiedzie, cóż wtedy zostają tylko angielskie słowa...
Tak w ogóle muszę Pana pochwalić, bo w porównaniu z pierwszymi Pana filmami poruszającymi tematykę języków Słowiańskich zrobił Pan tu duży progres.

no despite having similar words, they sound totally different. Chinese is tonal so it canbe distinguished easily. Korean consonants can end at the end of words while Japanese can't.

I speak no Slavic languages, but I was able to identify Russian easily. I assumed the one after it was Ukranian, and I also identified Polish (having been in Krakow this summer). Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian also sounds very distinct, and am familiar with its sound. I had a hard time identifying Slovenian, Czech and Slovak

It’s pretty interesting topic - I agree that Slavic languages are different, however they’ve got loads of in common - potentially if you think about old words in your language?! I guess it also helps if you speak a couple of Slavic languages and perhaps if you’ve been to quite a few of the Slavic countries. I’m Bulgarian and I also speak fluently Russian, so both languages tend to complement each other when I travel to any of the Slavic countries :)))
It may sound strange, but for major extent I understand all of them. Yes, certain words are way different, but all in all I can guess the meaning of what was said.

I am Slovenian and I understand Polish the least. Russian and Ukranian sound pretty much the same to me, but Slovakian and Czech sound a bit different. I can understand quite a bit of Slovakian and Czech. A bit less Russian and Ukranian.
I was able to distinguish Czech and Slovak cause my mom is from Slovakia so I'm actually half Slovak. One quick little thing that you can pay attention to to recognize Czech from Slovak is the pronunciation of the letter r.
In Czech you often hear this sound: /ř/, whereas in Slovak they don't use it. So if you have the word: "dobre" (which means good/well). You can hear the different pronunciation between dobře (Czech) and dobre (Slovak)
The Russian and Ukrainian I distinguished at once, but all the other ones sounded like Czech to me ... then I started distinguishing them, and actually got all of the right, even though I forgot that there was supposed to be Slovenian as well. I studied Russian at school some 20 years ago, but haven’t really learnt any other Slavic language. Just listened to lots of Slavic music and, well, I’m a linguist and interested in comparing languages.
I am polish and personally, i understood more from Russian then from Czech, Freaking weird.
As a Russian, Czech sounded very different from Slovenian and Slovak. Ukrainian is very easy to understand. The rest were somewhat hard to understand.
Actually, Russians have hard time understanding Ukrainian. But they always say that they understand 😂

Very interesting video! I've been to Poland (Poznán and Wroclaw) and I think I heard people pronounce Polish with the rolling "R", but fron the Polish man on the video I heared a rhotic "R", as the one from the most of Germany or French. Is this a particular accent or am I a little deaf?
The rhotic 'r' doesn't exist in Polish language, he has a speech defect - unfortunately not the best example

The only one I didn't guess correctly was Bosnian. Was born in Poland, moved to the US at age 2. Polish was my first language...I speak Polish, English, Spanish and a little Yiddish. I'm surprised I got most of them correct.
Hi!! Im Mexican, and I studied Serbian for one year, then I try to learn Slovak and Russian. I must say that I don't speak any of those languages but I love Slavic languages. The only one that I didn't guess was Slovenian. Amazing video!! (Bosnian and Serbian are pretty similar, was the easier for me haha)
I'm Serbo-Croatian myself and even though I've never really learned other Slavic languages except for trying to learn some Polish and Russian, I could almost always differentiate Slavic languages and I love them all

You didn't put serbian and bulgarian. I certainly would have recognized Serbian because the village I live in is a Serbian village, but on Romania's territory, not far from the border with Serbia. I am Romanian and I don't understand Serbian but I know how it sounds :)
Prună David old Church Slavonic is the oldest form of slavic language and it is closest to Macedonian.
That makes sense since it was Macedonians who invented the slavic alphabet in Macedonia and in the 10th century 3500 Macedonian missionary’s went out throughout Europe to spread slavic orthodox and the alphabet.
That’s why President Putin payed homage and congratulated the Macedonian President and said
“Macedonia is the cradle of slavic literature”

I'm not a native speaker of any Slavic language but I am a student of Serbian and Croatian language, thus I understand also Bosnian (and Montenegrian, if you want 🙈). Even if I'm not of Slavic origins I can tell the differences between various languages and during this video I got which one was which. Anyway, you must considered I also studied Slavic history and Old church Slavonic grammar. Nice video though, that was a fun game 😊
as Russian understood Russian and Ukrainian immediately. For Polish and Czech it took more time, but they are clearly different. I did not recognize the other languages, but I realized that it was one of the South Slavic ones.

Takođe postoje potvrđeni istorijski dokazi o postojanju SRPSKE kneževine i SRPSKOG kraljevstva u 19. vijeku. Da nije bilo Jugoslavije, vaša lažnjak (fejk da se izrazim anglicizmom) bosanska nacija poturčenih Srba ne bi postojala, tako da, molim te, nemoj ovdje širiti pseudo istoriju i laži koje bi ti i vaša lažnjak nacija voljeli da su istinite jer vam smetaju Srbi i srpski jezik. Nastavite živjeti u fikciji. Sve najbolje.
I only mixed Russian and Ukrainian, others were less hard to distinguish. Bosnian guy didn't really read his text well.
But I could understand them all (not every word at first though).
It also seems that translations were not exactly the same (I checked with my Polish and Slovak friend). So that was adding to the difficulty. They were all translating in their own way.
The main point is: All slavic languages are coming from one for sure! Through the time, as they moved and interacted with other ethnic groups, language changed. But it is normal.
Remember, we are all Slavic brothers and sisters.
I like the video. I do not understand any of the Slavic languages. But the phonology of all the languages are very similar, as such even though I cannot tell which particular language is spoken, I can tell when someone is speaking a Slavic language.

I personally (as a Slovak) understood all these people, I would say of 70% on average ... and I guessed all the languages correctly. :-) Of course, it helped me pretty much that I understand Czech for 100% (because of former Czechoslovakia) plus I learned Russian for 2 years when I was young. The biggest challenge for me was Bosnian. :-) Greetings to all the lovely people in the world.
I remember situation with news report from Montenegro, then translation lagged and i hear original speech and i understand original speech almost fully before i heard translation.
Probably, it was concatenation of circumstances, because Russian and Montenegrin although are slavic the both, they are in different groups, moreover to understand common temp speech without preparing isn't easy, but it was and it was easier then understand news report from neighboring Ukraine.
