In our city, we have a 4 laned raisable bridge like this, but, in my 70 years, I have NEVER witnessed it opening nor closing. This is the FIRST time I have EVER seen the operation of one of these type bridges! THANK YOU !!!
I was delighted to find this video, and you remember correctly. I lived in Joliet as a kid for 3 years beginning in the fall of 1968. I sat on my bike many a time at this bridge, and the sirens at this and the other downtown bridges sounded for at least 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure that back in that day the bridges had either Federal model A, D, or model L sirens mounted below the windowed portion of the tower, angled downward to prevent precipitation entry. I can still hear those sirens in my head.
The drawbridge near me is on the interstate so it has at least half a dozen sirens and signs all over the place that give drivers a heads up before they even start going to yellow lights on the traffic lights. Pretty interesting setup here!
These bridges had black and white diagonal stripes on the counterweight s years ago. The gates were b/w too. The warning lights were very different and the bridges were painted an ominous black.
There is a drawbridge in Portland Oregon,The Broadway Bridge spanning across the Willamette River which has the same design. Connecting the NW side of the river in the Pearl District, to the NE Side Lloyd District. Also the Portland Street Car runs along the Broadway Bridge traveling along NE MLK and SE Grand on the return trip
As mentioned below, there is a drawbridge like this in Portland, Oregon across the Willamette River to the south is the Steel Bridge. Which has an independent dual lift for the upper and lower span. The lower span is for the RR line. Upper for vehicles and the MAX.
When I was I kid in 1968, myself and a crazy as i friend climbed the walk way while it was lifting. Held on to railing till it lowered, got away with it . The operator didn’t catch us
@@luisp5036 Both these and the ones found on CNW’s EMD locomotives are WRRS motor bells (CNW’s GE’s tended to use more conventional locomotive bells if I remember correctly).
In some areas where bridges open primarily for pleasure boats, the openings are scheduled. This is the case with the Black River bridges in Port Huron and the Grand River U.S. 31 bridge in Grand Haven, both in Michigan. These open hourly during boating season, such as on the hour.
what if some idiot stays there? Does it recognize the sensor and stop picking up? I know what drivers can do at a level crossing and the red one doesn't mean anything to someone in some cases
In Florida the bridge tender must first make an announcement about the bridge preparing to go up. Each drawbridge is equipped with outdoor speakers. This is to alert pedestrians. Second he/she must exit the bridgehouse and visibly inspect the bridge to be sure it is clear of vehicles and pedestrians. This was mandated after several pedestrians were killed while crossing the bridge.
I grew up in Joliet illinois and would get stuck by these bridges all the time at least 2 to 3 times a day…. The bridge I was intrigued by the most was the swing bridge that was down by the district 5 state police station on division st. But after being hit so many times by barges the just took it out….cool video thou
No, it's actually a Scherzer rolling lift bridge. It rolls back on the side trusses to the back using the counterweight. The bridges in the City of Chicago are trunion bascule bridges. The leaf turns on a trunion pin for those
The big white box near the top is the counterweight. It's mostly concrete, with a honeycomb area where they can add steel plates to increase counterweight for balance. Any time they change something (paint, sidewalks, etc.) they rebalance the leaf.

Where is it?
I love the physical bells sounding. RR crossings these days play digital recordings, which sound like ass.
Thank you for posting this!!!
I got PTS from that sort of bridge back in pandemic times. We lost a very goid man, back then.
RIP Bill❤

This is AWESOME. I love old bridges, Thank you for sharing this video.
Thats a fast moving bridge!
I love the mini cross arms for the sidewalk. Never seen any like that before
They ussly have them on every bridge like that
Is an arm gate barrier
Many railroad crossings have the pedestrian gates.
The Fremont Street bridge in Seattle has them

Always exciting when the bells start going off while you're still crossing the bridge!
Yep
Gotta do it in a retired Mt. Prospect police car with a broken cigarette lighter
Wow, really neat. I was surprised to see the bridge raise up and lower very quick.
Yea, it happened so fast I didn't even see Jake and Elwood jump across the top.
Love that scene
Reminds me of the beginning of the movie Maximum Overdrive.
I used to walk across this bridge in my youth
My hometown...this makes me homesick!
I have never seen a drawbridge like that. Normally you only see counter weights like that on train trestles. Cool.

There's a bridge like this in Britain over the River Trent. Sadly it hasn't operated for decades.
Did that one in that white GMC even wait for the light to turn green?
With the quickness of it, unlikely.
I would love to see the inside of the control tower. Excellent video!

The inside of the machinery room is what you really want to see.
Good video from Joliet. Onto the Lockport locks for that boat. I believe the locks are still closed to the public.
The two pigeons on top of the counterweight were like, "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
When I was I kid in 1968, myself and a crazy as i friend climbed the walk way while it was lifting. Held on to railing till it lowered, got away with it . The operator didn’t catch us
Sounds like a railroad crossing
The bells are made by Western Cullen Hayes which primarily make equipment for the railroad industry.
I think Is the same bell used on the c&nw locomotoves

Its actually a WRRS motor bell.
But they do install WCH mechanical bells on some of the draw bridges
Great video and setup! Love the 12-8-8 signals, motor bells, and Sentry F2! How do you know when the bridge is going to rise, BTW?
*b o a t*
@@apronchaperon lmfao 🤣
I think he has a boat tracking app

A friend of mines Dad operates the bridge by Amtrak near Chicago river by Chinatown near Amtrak lumber st.
This video just popped up in my feed. I’ve driven over this bridge multiple times and not thought anything of it as far as it being unique.
Silly me.
Great video!

Good video 📹✔
Sounds like a freight train getting ready to come through lol
Nice Catch
Interesting how the whole ground shakes during the last part of the closing.
Is that US 6 and 52
Are the bells WRRS motor bells or B&B?
WRRS motor bells.
Western Cullen Hayes type 555
Don’t argue with the creator (Tommy)
You don’t like it? Cars got alotta pickup.
There is also a similar, but smaller brIdge like this in Saint Nazaire in West Of France
There were similar bridges in Milwaukee. Same color green as well 😊
I believe that type is referred to as a bascule bridge.

Also how did you know when the drawbridge was about to lift??
I have a Marine Tracker that shows where barges and other boats are at.
I tjink it uses water to weight the sides with a pump to those boxes? Or is it electric?

lol it’s a wrrs 0555, so basically the same thing but it’s not from cnw
Wait C&NW makes Motor Bells?
Cool video

Interesting. Thanks!
Do you like drawbridges Tommy?
Very good!
You Have More Of These?
Good shooting!
It's a shame they don't build them like this no more
When you're halfway across and it starts going back up 😬😵
Love it
Never seen a bridge like that one before
