Michigan City Draw Bridge - Full Lift

- After waiting for a half an hour, a boat finally showed up and made this sweet draw bridge go up. I think the operator made it go all the way up just because he saw me waiting for so long, because they usually only life it half way for a boat this size.

Thanks for the video. My 3 y.o son got a drawbridge set toy, and this video helps him see a real life drawbridge. (We have none in our country). P.S : he focuses on the duck on the foreground after about 2 minutes in.

I grew up in MC but only got caught waiting for the bridge once. As a kid it worried me that it might open as we drove over it... Nice video! Very smooth, clean the color is excellent!!

Just read about someone who died because operator lifted it. I had never heard of this type of bridge and wanted to see how it works. I would be too afraid to even go near it.
Brings back memories of my childhood in Rochester, NY where we had an old draw bridge. We called it a lift bridge, same difference!!! It was replaced with a new larger draw bridge that allows great lakes freighters to go through and up the Genesee River. Thanks for the posting!!!

Hey, thanks for this footage! My toddler and I were playing dinosaurs and draw bridges and she wanted to know what a draw bridge was. Since we don't have any draw bridges in my area I searched on TH-cam to find a good video and yours was the first we checked out. She loved the goose, too.

Few questions: Does it open for everyone, like pedestrian boats? Does it automatically open or is someone operating it and if so, do you need to call someone or do they just watch for boats to come through? Also, why is there so many dislikes?
I love draw bridges. So cool. Hauled containers in to Ling Beach. Been over the bridge in to San Padro
We were just there last weekend. The kids loved watching the bridge open. I had never seen anything like that either

I have a phobia of large bodies of water. And also bridges. So when I was driving across that thing. And I had to stop.... I lost my mind. Because one I never knew it opened. I just so happened to caught that day. From that point on i do not go over that bridge.... Period!!

the boat had antennas that couldn’t fit under the bridge without a lift, the most likely automatically goes all the way up

The correct name is lifting bridge. That little boat could have fitted under that.

They do not open for boats that can easily fit, but I think they do open it if it is going to be a close fit because what if a random wave comes thru while the boat is under the bridge? It would be bad it the boat rose up and hit the bridge

Total time of bridge lift: around 1 minute 30 seconds. Surprised , 😳, though that the bridge leaves 🍃 just didn't go up all the way.

So on to of the bridge is a narrow curve
Then underneath is the crocodile on the left(gone) and the tiny z on the right aka draw bridge
Then underneath that is flat face with its left eye long.

Can anyone mention the name of the original manufacturer of the Bridge ? What a wonderful engineering creation. At Calcutta Port we have its 1966 built counterpart , made by Wagner Biro AG of Austria .

This bridge doesn’t go up very often there are not that many boats that need it to go up to clear it
