  • The two reasons that in my experience, in my practice as a speech therapist for over 15 years that are most likely to be the cause for why a child is experiencing delayed speech and language are:
    1) Overexposure to screens and
    2) Understimulation.

When my son was 18 months he started calling out few words. I than introduced him to screens he completely stopped talking . He is 2 years old now and hardly says anything. You have explained everything in this video and I feel so guilty as a parent that I am the root cause of my son’s delay. Thank you so much this has been helpful.

Hello, I want to find out something.
My son had a tongue tie and those things that attaches the tongue to the cheeks. He was worked on three times but now has just turned 2 years and he can't really speak. Sometimes he may produce a word after that he stops saying that word. he doesn't pay attention when been talked too, he's just in his own world. When wants water, he will just a cup and give me or if the water is under his reach he will just get. Yesterday I took him to the dentist and she said one of the nerve was cut and there is that pain so it is hard for him to talk but he will be having difficult. And in relation to your explanation on speech delayment I have over exposed him to the screen and less stimulation. I'm disturbed on this so I would really love to hear view on the nerve damage

You are right, screen time is not causing this single apeech delayed problem but many others too.. but the problem is that if a child has elder bro/sis then the elder ones need the tv time, and for the sake of some peace of mind in the parent's regard we have to allow it... then how we are able to avoid it for the younger ones to avoid it... in the same very house.

I once met a woman who had a child with speech delay and she said her and her husband were naturally very quiet people who don't talk much so their doctor suggested they keep the tv on all the time so the child can hear people talk. I was very surprised that a doctor would recommend that.

Hi Lorna, and thanks in advance for your videos. My son is 36 months (going 3 days a week to nursery)and I think he is behind the peers on language. He started to put a couple of words together that’s nice but still a lot o echolalia.
We are trilingual, me ( Portuguese), Dad (Italian) and Nursery (English). How is learning 3 different languages at the same time? Is there any influence at his speech delay?
    Thanks a lot!

They can have screen time. What she is saying is “over exposure” is not recommended. Parents should be aware of how much screen time their child is part taking in. Hands on play and interactions is what is best.
I get it, what should the kids do all day play? We can play all day. What I do is have certain activities that my child can do so they are entertained.

She will bring things to me to let me know what she wants. She understands what she is doing and everything i say. She is very smart and has hit every other milestone. Should I be concerned?

    • @SpeechTherapyTotos
      @SpeechTherapyTotos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hello, from my years of practice, overexposure to screens and under-stimulation are the main causes of speech delay in children. Does your daughter have access to screens (phones, laptops, tablets etc?). Children below the age of 2 years should not be exposed to screens. Children above 2 years should only be allowed an hour of screen-time per day. At your daughter's age, she is expected to have between 25-50 words. Here are the language expectations of children at different ages: At 12-15 months, we expect that your child should have between 3-5 words.
At 18 months, we expect your child to have between 25- 50 words.
At 2 years, we expect your child to have between 200-300 words.
At 3 years, your child should have 1,000 words.
At 4 years, your child should have over 1,500 words. I would advise you to sign up to this FREE 3-Part Video Series - speechtherapytotos.com/3-part-video-series- to learn about some of the things you need to start doing and to stop doing within your home environment in order to help your daughter develop her speech and language skills.

We cut off cartoons when he was just over 2 years old after over a year of letting him watch cartoons a lot throughout the day. He has definitely seen a quick amount of improvement but not enough.

He talks but he has his own language.. He talks a lot but no words.. He was exposed to screen very much.. We barely taljd to him.. Now we r worried.. We have stopped his tv watching..

Hi...my daughter was having a lot of screen time. She is 23 months...she can count from 1-10 and say her ABCs due to the constant screen time but is saying very few words. And when we tell her to say words she knows if she does not want to she throws a tantrum and sometimes she says them nicely...what can we do?
I will cut down screen time but i am currently 32 weeks pregnant and exhausted so i need the screen. How do we stimulate talk.

Hello, the first thing you need to do is cut off screen-time. Children below 2 years should not be exposed to screens at all. And those above 2 years should only be exposed to an hour of screen-time a day.You also need to continue learning about how to stimulate your daughter's speech. Please check out this FREE 3-Part video series about the things you need to do and the things you need to stop doing to develop your daughter's speech and language skills- speechtherapytotos.com/3-part-video-series. @@vunsoraya1657 hi! My kid will turn 3 in dec. And he is not talking.
But he understand many things, and respond to what we say to him.
      1) he is going to daycare for half day, since last 7 months. Bcoz of this he gets to play, gets friends, do some activities, and listen to language. This has brought lots of changes in his behavior.
      2) when he comes home I talk talk talk talk with him, even if he is not looking or listening me.
      3) I command & bring his attention on things. (by tell him to get or pick up things) may be 2-3 times a day.
      4) I do puzzle stuff for 10min. Daily. Read book once in night (even though he is listening or not).
      5) Basically i am making him understand the language.
But there is a lots of improvement in his behaviors too. Now he has started babbling full day and speak in gibberish sometime.
I think within 6-8 months more, he will speak.
Will update you about the same

My son is delayed and just went through early intervention. We were told he might have a learning disability or it might be his hearing. Don’t believe everything on TH-cam.

Have anyone thought that it’s not easy for a parent to actually be engaged to their children’s? Some parents struggle how would they even do that. How they can communicate, how they can actually be there on the floor and establish communication and sensible play time. A lot of parents struggle how they can establish connection with their children. Parents are struggling the most coz their minds can’t even know how!!!
