How to Teach Your Child Not to Repeat What You Are Saying (Echolalia)

  • Have you encountered a child, perhaps it could be your own child who when you say, “how are you?”, they repeat, “how are you?”
    This form of copying or repeating words and phrases is referred to as echolalia. Echolalia is when you have a child that is repeating verbatim everything you say to them. It is also known as parroting. Echolalia is mostly but not always observed in children on the autism spectrum disorder.
    Echolalia is a very typical part of language development in young children. Children will often echo right at the beginning when they start to learn how to talk. I remember when my two year old was about eighteen months he copied a lot of the things I said to him. But by two years he had stopped like a majority of children do, repeating everything and instead started generating some of his own responses
    Why do children echo?
    1. Limited vocabulary
    2. A form of self-stimulation
    3. Rigidity in language skills
    - A child could use echolalia to repeat often heard words/ phrases in a somewhat appropriate context like questions and praise items.
    How to stop echolalia is dependent on the reason your child is echoing.

    Hello Madam.Thank you so much for this teaching.You just made mention of what i have been thinking may be one of the cause of echolalia even though am not a speech therapist and that was what you listed as "limited vocabulary " you just helped put my thoughts into writing.😊I would like you to help me with this:How does one help a child who sometimes repeat what you say,repeat what he has heard before and also refers to herself as "She" instead of using "I" to make request for example, you will hear her say. "She is hungry" or will mention her name to make a request .For example,You will hear her say "Sarah is hungry " and this will make you think she is making the request for someone else rather than herself. Please how can one help such a child

    my 4-year-old son has echolalia (not utism) he repeats everything we ask him, then we screw him up and he answers well, but the next day it's the same. The things that he knows he answers well, like giving him a choice between two things, he asks for only one of the two.

    This info is a bit outdated now. Understanding Gestalt language processing and interventions for this, will help us understand Echolalia's purpose in communication. It is not to be discouraged but understood. It's different way of language development that has different stages of progression

      Please find out about Gestalt language processing. It's just a different way of language development to what most kids do. With appropriate support they will move through stages of language development in their own way. Don't discourage the echolalia, acknowledge it, by e.g nodding. Understand what they are trying to communicate by the echolalia and give them another phrase to use to be able to communicate. There is a lot of advice now on how to correctly support GLP children. This video is outdated compared to current knowledge

    • @SpeechTherapyTotos
      @SpeechTherapyTotos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a habit she is fast identifying with. Is it like how some people say "actually" before each response? Do you suspect that her use of this word is acting like a filler (uhm, erm, etc) or do you suspect she may be experiencing a communication difficulty such as word finding difficulties, inadequate vocabulary, etc.
      There is a public-speaking forum called 'toast masters' that encourages fluent public speaking, and one part of mastering this skill is self-monitoring one's "uhms". They get speakers to count their "uhms". Why not practise this with your daughter, but for her, you'll be getting her to count her "says". It's a really useful activity, which can bring into focus what is so automated for a speaker. Since learning about the "uhm counter", I have used this to improve my own use of fillers.
      All the best.

    Caroline Mutoko also brought me here :). I have a nephew who just turned 4 and who has been exposed to a lot of screen time. As you spoke on Carole's channel, I could identify with a lot of what you said. So he can count up to like 300, knows all colours shapes, letters etc. However, he does not know how to have conversations and repeats a lot as well. He echos most of the words, either when he hears people say something or when he sees it on TV. It was so interesting when you mentioned the way they sometimes repeat 'good boy' because he does that a lot. How do we get him to be social, engage in conversation and basically catch up on his speaking?

    Our 5 year old autistic son has a tendency to use echolalia (And palalia) quite a bit. Sometimes it's immediate and other times it is quite delayed. The other day he heard a video and it said *Oh my God, it's Mr. Peabody and Sherman!* Well, for the next three hours (With just a few breaks) he kept repeating it over and over again. At one time I thought he was going to quit for good, and when he restarted again I made the mistake of saying *Oh, sh*t*. Well, then he started saying the Peabody and Sherman line followed by the Oh Sh*t line right after it. Luckily, we didn't have to go anywhere that day.

    • @SpeechTherapyTotos
      @SpeechTherapyTotos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Echolalalia and palilalia can be frustrating, and the key to correcting them is through understanding what is causing your child to imitate.
      Is it because he lacks adequate stumulation from the people who live with him, is he perhaps overexposed to screens, does he lack the requisite language skills to support communication, etc. Depending on what could be causing it, you can address the trigger and it should resolve over time with consistent intervention.
      Also, children "echoing" can be a first step towards communication although I doubt this is the reason for your son's "echoing" as he is managing to repeat pretty long phrases.
      Please check out this quick video- th-cam.com/video/EE56bMGTTJY-/w-d-xo.html on how to address echolalia in children.
      All the best.
