  • Mysteries & Scandals profiles legendary bandleader and I Love Lucy star and executive producer, Desi Arnaz.
This episode was produced and edited over fifteen years ago and has about 5 seconds of black between acts. Please don't complain about it, this is how I got it. Just fast forward over them.

So many older sitcoms, rewatched years later can seem irrelevant, but I Love Lucy is timeless. She once said, you have to make the audience believe that you believe in your character and believe what you're doing. This shows in every episode. Thankful we have her reruns and old interviews, but sure wish she was still around.

Desi still does not get the credit he deserves and Lucy was always the first one to point that out. They both gave each other the credit for their monumental success. He had issues - everyone does. If you listen to Lucie Arnez talk about his past and his life - he had PTSD from living through the Cuban revolution, his family's attitude, no matter how much he did for them was: is that all you can do?
Lucie said it would make anyone want to grab another martini.
Later in life he went through rehab and AA and quit drinking. He was a brilliant and talented man, liked by everyone, and according to Lucie, a wonderful loving father.

I’ve been married 24 years in a few months and being married is NOT perfect or easy. It is very hard work, day in and day out. Being told that marriage is easy or it means never having to say I’m sorry, creates a shallow relationship that no one is invested in.

Lucy would be 104 years old, Desi would be 99 years old, Ethyl would be 107, and Fred would be 129 years old. The I love lucy show has run every day since 1960 when it went in to syndication. What other show can have that kind of record?

agree with your statement 150%....i love lucy is classic tv at its all time best...lucille ball always gets the majority of the credit because she was the star of the show no one individual is responsible for i love lucy's success...i love lucy was lighting in bottle...all the elements of time n space and the universe came together to create something exceptional and great.....the cast, the writing, are all contibuting factors...it was an an ensemble cast that shared an amazing chemistry...remove anyone of them and the chemistry fades...desi deserves much of the credit because he felt he had something to prove and invested alot of time to ensure every episode was perfect.....his next show(the mother in-laws) only lasted 2 season and was not really an entertaining show....i never watched lucy's other two shows until recently(the major networks are creating channels made of their older shows)..both shows were horrible in comparison to i love lucy..she benefited from timing.....the 60's tv shows all played to middle america...keep it clean n simple n every once in a while throw in some sap...it was not until the 70's that the networks began to push the envelope...

They were both clear that they both still loved one another. They learned, however, that they couldn't be together as a married couple. Lucille needed a faithful husband, and Desi needed a wife, at least at that time, who could accept that he loved her but would not always be monogamous. It couldn't work. The truth is that great romantic love and marriage are not always compatible.

    • @inkyguy

My Mom and my Dad remind me of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. My Dad was born in Cuba and came to the U.S when he was 17, and my Mom is full blooded American. The good thing is that my Dad does not have the issues Desi had, so my parents' marriage has lasted so far 25 years and they love each other. Although my Dad's accent isn't half as heavy as Desi's , he does pronounce some words in a funny way so my parents always joke about this. They are fans of the I Love Lucy show, and my Mom has collected all of the dolls and has two full collections of the I Love Lucy and Desi and Lucy Comedy hour. Just like Desi, my Dad is very proud of this country and living here. Just like Lucy and Desi, my parents also share a beautiful love story.

I read his autobiography 'A Book'. He was just lovable - also had his brand of integrity and was willing to try something new and have fun. In his book there was no doubt Lucy was the love of his life. He said his philandering was the latin way of his homeland at that time - men played around but it meant nothing - their one true love was at home. He just took problems on head on to do what he wanted - They wanted to make I Love Lucy from their home on the West coast but the big market on the East coast would not accept the poor quality of the cinescope they would have been forced to watch. Desi said why cant we film it in front of a live audience on film, which had never been done before and had substantial technical challenges. He made it happen and all the other production companies clamoured to use his facilities to do the same thing - and it was the start of he and Lucy owning the biggest studios in Hollywood - Desilu.

Desi Arnaz had looks, charm, acting ability (could apparently memorize a script after reading it once), business skills, clever camera, film, and television ideas, singing, dancing, guitar, and drumming talent. He also had good comedic timing and could speak two languages fluently, sometimes in the same monologue. In addition, he was I Love Lucy's executive producer and did work as a director. What more did we need to know for this man to get the recognition he deserved, then and now?!

We have lost what really counts in life and replaced it with material things that fad and leave us empty and cold. In the final analysis, what you are is what counts...not what's in your garage, or house, or on your back. It's what's inside that endures and brings joy.

I’m in a blended marriage. There have been times when we walk in make a major purchase, and all questions from the rep are directed to my wife, as if she understands better than I do or she is the primary decision maker. I couldn’t imagine how many times he had to bite his tongue in spite of being the brains, engine, and facilitator of the operation. I can see him coming unhinged because of the pride that he had to swallow. Depression comes in many forms.

I love watching Lucy and Desi together and never tire of watching them on screen. I always felt that they should have made more than 3 movies together, When I watched Lucy or Desi appear on talk shows and the marriage would often come up, I always respected both of them because neither 'bad mouthed' one another in public. To me that was classy. Rip lucy and desi I love you both, Television sure is not as classy or as funny without the two of you,

I started watching I love Lucy, when I was 10 back in 1979, I never thought Desi was handsome….I thought back then that maybe I was just too young to see it at just 10 years old….but I still don’t think he was handsome….she loved him for sure, but I don’t see what the hoopla was about Desi….maybe at that time in America there were not many Cubans and he seemed exotic to the women of that time….but I never saw anything special about him….there are way more good looking Latin men who have come and gone on television since then.

She had One Love in her life and so much of her was poured into making that relationship work including her incredible effort of Becoming "Lucy" but only along with her "Ricky" and ultimately the creation of "Desilu"...was to MAKE her marriage Work. But in so many of her photos, not often in the production or promotion photos, but in a great many photos of her in the 50's, her eyes told the whole story. In those her smile never reached her eyes. Any woman who was ever married to a man like Ricky will not miss those eyes.

This is highly sensationalized. Desi didn't "live" in the Shadow of his wife. He knew his wife was the star. The show was CALLED I Love Lucy for goodness sake, and he knew the success hinged on her image. He worked a lot behind the scenes and revolutionized television. He was by no means under appreciated, even back then. He drank and womanized because that was his personality. He was doing that before he and Lucy ever became a television success. Shame on you for trying to paint Desi as insecure of his wife being in the spotlight!

It did bother him, though, and it created more issues for them in their marriage. Reporters would mistakenly call him "Mr. Ball" - that set him off big time during that final trip the family took to Europe which turned into a nightmare for all involved 😥. It was especially hard for a man to deal with that at that time. Plus, the culture he grew up in, the man was "THE MAN." But like you said, he always gave Lucy 90 percent of the credit. She said he was never given the credit he deserved. He still isn't given the credit or recognition he deserves.

I loved him and Lucy equally however, I lost just a smidgen of respect for Lucy when, in an interview she gave, she publicly called Desi a Bum amongst other derogatory things. I get it. She was hurt by his affairs and his drinking (she did her fair share) at the time. He was anything but a bum. He handled all their business/movies and television affairs and if it weren’t for his intelligence/tenacity & business acumen I don’t believe they would have had the success they did as she wasn’t all too popular before he came along. I felt that it was unnecessary for her to say those things on television. I still adored her but was sad she took it to that level. In the end. They still loved one another deeply until the day they both passed on.

No, Desi Arnaz did NOT turn to booze and women because his wife was successful - we need to STOP this insane narrative that a womans success causes men pain. If you are a real man, being married to a movie a star and owning one of the biggest production companies at the time would be enough! Desi drank and cheated on women because his ego was too big and he was ungrateful for all that he was given. It usually starts with a poor childhood. Blame his upbringing... but not Lucille's success. That is just ignorant.

    • @Kaboomboo
      @Kaboomboo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Right? This is very sensationalized. He knew Lucy was the star and that everyone's livelihood relied in her the most. He knew his part and did the business side extremely well. Behind the scenes people rarely get recognition. But Desi was beloved and appreciated even then too. He was by no means "living in her shadow."

    • @rayarena879
      @rayarena879 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Desi did not have a poor childhood. He was very wealthy, a lot wealthier than Lucy's family, so your theory about why he began to drink doesn't fit this case. Desi probably drank because he was under too much pressure. He was managing Desilu Company and acting in a successful weekly program. Even doing one would have been stressful, but juggling both? That was crazy and back then people didn't take tranquilizers or go to psychiatrists. They had cocktails.

If you are a fan of Lucy like I have been you embrace every meaning " I Love Lucy" as the title and also an expression how you feel about her. Both her and Desi were a power couple. But unfortunately when third parties get in your intimate love these things happen to the best of marriage. I choose to praise their work not the infidelity problems. They both made us laugh and proved a West Side Story version of themselves to diversity. In other words, they loved each other regardless of their culturally background. And I Love Lucy and Desi for that. She will always be the greatest comedian of all times. Not many comedians can make you belly laugh without cussing, but Lucy and Desi can. I hope Heaven has them enjoying the real love they always wanted. God Bless the Desi Arnaz Family

To me, the "I Love Lucy' show was one of the 3 greatest sitcoms ever, including the other two, "The Honeymooners" and "Car 54, Where Are You."
The latter may seem like an outlier, but it was a brilliant series; the only true farce ever made as a series.
Lucy, of course, was a comic genius. But the writers should also be credited. The later Lucy shows fall flat, in my view. She became a routine sitcom performer in those shows. So the genius of Arnaz and the writers must have had something to do with her series.
One of the most important names in the series, the cameraman or DP innovated the technique of multiple cameras. He had a long illustrious history as both a DP and director of the classic horror flick, "The Mummy" (Karl Freund).

@@hallieharker4384 The early Lucy Show episodes had Desi behind the scenes. Desi sold his part of Desilu to Lucy in the 60s. You can see the difference in the show after he left. Lucy said that when Desi was there all she had to do was show up and perform. He took care of everything else. She called him a few times a week for advice after he left. He truly knew Lucy's talent and understood how she worked. I've enjoyed The Lucy Show a LOT ever since I was a kid and they aired it on Nick at Nite. But, imo, it was never the same after he was out of it.

I looked it up, and the I Love Lucy show only had one black actor on the show that played a porter. The 50s definitely was a racist time to be in.

Well they had a typical soul mate relationship that they probably had been working on through many lifetimes. You can be the most successful and richest couple in the world, doesn't mean that you will be happy. Success and riches can never guarantee happiness. Perhaps maybe that is the moral of their story. Love, money, nor success is not enough to make anyone happy.

I wonder if Sonny Bono modeled the Sonny & Cher Show after I Love Lucy. Basics of the show are very similar - the husband is the foil for the wife, wife is the primary comedian.

From what I have heard, Lucy and Desi somehow managed to have a friendship after their divorce.

To say that Desi did all the work and Lucy got all the glory is the most horrific statement ever. She was the star and he ran the company. The show wouldn't have happened at all if it weren't for Lucille and Desi wouldn't have been on it in any capacity if Lucille hadn't been adamant about him being her partner. The fact that Desi was an incredible business mind was a plus. He is largely why the show is revolutionary from a technical standpoint absolutely but it's ridiculous that they both can't be praised separately... Every discussion suggests that Desi suffered because he wasn't recognized for his work when she was. That's not her fault, that's just the reality: The people behind the scenes rarely get as much regard as the people in front of the camera. Wish people wouldn't make him out to be a saint. He was a brilliant innovator, and a cruel man to the woman who loved him so completely. Both can be, and more importantly, are true.

Had Desi not suffered from alcoholism, does anyone else think that he would have came up with CGI special effects?
