Remember, they had two very small kids at the time, a TV show to rehearse and block and perform, and they still had time for appearances like this. Amazing people.

That one cocktail at night to unwind can end up turning into 3 and 4 cocktails and before you know it, you're hooked.

@ Mica Papa In those days, if a lady was going to be in the public's appearance she needed to wear a hat and a pair of gloves! So a trip to the store, wasn't a casual dress event. Everything was very respectful attire. Jeans, pants of any type on a woman would never be acceptable for anywhere! I remember my mother having many hats & gloves that I asked about as I got older. I asked what & why she had so many? Even as a child, a girl couldn't wear pants of any type to school & that was later in the 60s.
This is how you make a game show. The panelists are literally thinking and TRYING to ask probative questions as best they can, while making it a light mood and having fun where they can with it. In turn guests and audience enjoy the experience.
My grandmother who is now 97 years of age got to see Ricky and Lucy at the Del Mar race track quite often. She often told me how Ricky would wear simple,comfortable clothes and Lucy would be dressed up. I wish I had been alive during those days.

I remember being a very small girl...............and seeing Arlene's heart necklace, and wanting one very badly. Fast Forward to 1985. I got one. Not as large, but a diamond heart necklace just the same.
My mother and father watched I ❤ Lucy, I watched I ❤ Lucy, my children watched I ❤ Lucy and now my grandchildren watch. It has remained a favorite in my family for generations. It makes me happy when I see the grandchildren laugh at Lucy's antic's. We still love Luci and Desi ❤🌟🌟

This was such a wonderful show. Whenever I feel like a flight of nostalgia to take me out of today's world, What's My Line is the perfect ticket. And to the commenter below, yes, Lucy and Desi were good at hiding their marital problems, but if you know what to look for, you can tell from their body language that they are not close. But they knew how to keep up a professional act. And in response to another commenter, Desi Arnaz remained a powerful force behind the camera after he stopped performing in front of it. As far as producers go, Goodson-Todman and Desi Arnaz -- the first for game shows and the other for sitcoms -- changed television forever. Look up Desilu Productions and see how many shows he created produced. He was a brilliant man.

I looked it up because I stumbled upon Kitty Carlisle's autobiography and had misremembered that she was a regular panelist on the show. Kitty states that people were always getting her an Arlene Francis -- by the way, they had known each other since they were both starlets in the 1930s -- mixed up, She added that her in opinion "What's My Line" was a more important show than "To Tell The Truth." But I see from TH-cam that Kitty was a fairly frequent guest panelist on WML... and I just realized that she stood in for Dorothy Kilgallen on the Sunday after her death. Arlene Francis looks terribly grief-stricken in that episode, by the way; the two women must have been very close.
+What's My Line I either read or saw an interview recently (probably with daughter Lucie if it was the latter) that after their divorce and when he was still involved with Desilu before she bought him out, he would show up at the studio when Lucy was either rehearsing or doing whatever show she was in at the time. Was their show filmed in Los Angeles? Desi said "whenever we come to New York". I thought they filmed in NYC, at least until the show setting moved to California. And were there people back then that did NOT like "I Love Lucy"? Today, we have an incredible spectrum of comedy to choose from, and what is hysterically funny for some does nothing for other people. Jas22....Nope, I Love Lucy was filmed in LA the entire run of the show. They did this mainly for preservation purposes. Back in the day shows wanting live viewings in west coast tv markets were stuck watching poor kinescope versions. Desi was a pioneer in that he decided to take a financial hit (they took a $1,000 a week pay cut but had an 80% ownership of the show) and put the show to film. Another big factor was Lucille had just given birth to daughter Lucie and couldn't really uproot across the country.

It was in September 1957, Dodgers and Giants at the Polo Grounds and I was four years old. (Take the A train from our station in Queens, Greenwood Avenue, to Columbus Circle and then change for the D train to the 155th Street-8th Avenue station.) Being extremely precocious, I knew most of the players and I certainly knew when he would step into the left handed batters box with that big blue #4 on his back. I rooted for him to hit a home run every time up and he hit one: a three-run shot that put the Dodgers in the lead to stay. It was the last game the Dodgers would win against the Giants at the Polo Grounds. The next day was when the last Dodger-Giant game was played in NYC and Curt Barclay of the Giants outdueled Don Drysdale of the Dodgers. The following April, they were playing each other at Seals Stadium in San Francisco and the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. And I never got to see a game at Ebbets Field (although my big brother saw two of them there). I forgave my dad ... eventually!
I have watched all of them from the beginning through this one, and this one made me laugh more than any other. I don't normally care for Robert Q. Lewis, but he was on a roll during the mystery guest. Lucy and Desi were funny. Swiddish. I was dying.
I have read much about Desi and Lucy and you are very perceptive. Lucy WAS actually shy and Desi was the outgoing one. It is said he was the life of the party when they were entertaining at home while Lucy was serious and quiet. She was a complex person and he was a typical Latin womanizer. She couldn’t understand why he would say he only loved her, and that his dalliances didn’t mean anything. Even after they split up and both remarried, they remained close until Desi’s death. A tragic love story for Lucy and Desi.

There is no comparison from the entertainment in the 50s and 60s 2 today now it is for the most part of noxious too loud to Speedy and only for the segment of our society that does not know the difference in quality. However I do have to say some of it is quality but I would say most of it is not do the trick for me

People had so much class back then. They really were america's heros. Both rose up from nothing to the peak of their profession even owning a studio and they both represented marriage and family. You could see there were very much in love. I believe Lucille when she spoke of the letters that she received of people begging her not to divorce. The TV studio bosses said America would never accept a Cuban married to Lucille and when they divorced America could not imagine them being separated from each other. America knew the whisperings that Desi drank and was unfaithful but to America this couple was family and America reacted to them as if they were family. That is as much a compliment, to be loved as family by an entire nation, as is rising from poverty to aristocracy.
Although, one has to wonder...20 years of a hit series...plus a major Hollywood Studio...one has to wonder...what happened to all that money? Lucy died and her house hadn't been remodeled since "The Lucy Show" went off the air. The whole house had to be gutted because it was so out of date...and the jewelry...it certainly didnt wind up with Lucy Arnaz.

I remember being a very small girl...............and seeing Arlene's heart necklace, and wanting one very badly. Fast Forward to 1985. I got one. Not as large, but a diamond heart necklace just the same.

This was such a wonderful show. Whenever I feel like a flight of nostalgia to take me out of today's world, What's My Line is the perfect ticket.
And to the commenter below, yes, Lucy and Desi were good at hiding their marital problems, but if you know what to look for, you can tell from their body language that they are not close. But they knew how to keep up a professional act.
And in response to another commenter, Desi Arnaz remained a powerful force behind the camera after he stopped performing in front of it. As far as producers go, Goodson-Todman and Desi Arnaz -- the first for game shows and the other for sitcoms -- changed television forever. Look up Desilu Productions and see how many shows he created produced. He was a brilliant man.

What's My Line? According to the editors of Wikipedia, "The original Desilu company continued long after Arnaz's divorce from Ball and her remarriage to Gary Morton. Desilu produced its own programs and provided facilities to other producers. Desilu produced The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, and Star Trek."
However, the show itself did not survive their divorce (in 1960): "The black-and-white series originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957, on CBS. After the series ended in 1957, however, a modified version continued for three more seasons with 13 one-hour specials, running from 1957 to 1960, known first as The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show and later in reruns as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour."
I can remember learning about their divorce (I was 5 years old) and being very sad about it. However, the original show remained in reruns (Desi was the first person to institute TV reruns!) and so I forgot about it while enjoying the show.
What's My Line? P.S. Where do you get these copies of the show? I looked it up because I stumbled upon Kitty Carlisle's autobiography and had misremembered that she was a regular panelist on the show.
Kitty states that people were always getting her an Arlene Francis -- by the way, they had known each other since they were both starlets in the 1930s -- mixed up, She added that her in opinion "What's My Line" was a more important show than "To Tell The Truth." But I see from TH-cam that Kitty was a fairly frequent guest panelist on WML... and I just realized that she stood in for Dorothy Kilgallen on the Sunday after her death. Arlene Francis looks terribly grief-stricken in that episode, by the way; the two women must have been very close.

I either read or saw an interview recently (probably with daughter Lucie if it was the latter) that after their divorce and when he was still involved with Desilu before she bought him out, he would show up at the studio when Lucy was either rehearsing or doing whatever show she was in at the time. It was a test of her professionalism as it made it more difficult for her.

They were awesome! I miss Lucy and Desi. Though divorced I believe, deep down, they loved each other all of their lives.
Their daughter, Lucie, told how when Desi was dying, Lucy was on the phone with him saying over and over, "I love you, I love you, I love you.........." They couldn't live together......but the love never died.

I was so heartbroken when Lucy and Desi divorced, I wanted them to be happy because they made their audience so happy and carefree.
Was their show filmed in Los Angeles? Desi said "whenever we come to New York". I thought they filmed in NYC, at least until the show setting moved to California. And were there people back then that did NOT like "I Love Lucy"? Today, we have an incredible spectrum of comedy to choose from, and what is hysterically funny for some does nothing for other people. But back then, there were limited options and a different mindset.

Jas22....Nope, I Love Lucy was filmed in LA the entire run of the show. They did this mainly for preservation purposes. Back in the day shows wanting live viewings in west coast tv markets were stuck watching poor kinescope versions. Desi was a pioneer in that he decided to take a financial hit (they took a $1,000 a week pay cut but had an 80% ownership of the show) and put the show to film. Another big factor was Lucille had just given birth to daughter Lucie and couldn't really uproot across the country.

My favorite baseball player from my favorite baseball team from the time of my earliest memories. I can still remember going to my first game in person. It was in September 1957, Dodgers and Giants at the Polo Grounds and I was four years old. (Take the A train from our station in Queens, Greenwood Avenue, to Columbus Circle and then change for the D train to the 155th Street-8th Avenue station.) Being extremely precocious, I knew most of the players and I certainly knew when he would step into the left handed batters box with that big blue #4 on his back. I rooted for him to hit a home run every time up and he hit one: a three-run shot that put the Dodgers in the lead to stay. It was the last game the Dodgers would win against the Giants at the Polo Grounds. The next day was when the last Dodger-Giant game was played in NYC and Curt Barclay of the Giants outdueled Don Drysdale of the Dodgers. The following April, they were playing each other at Seals Stadium in San Francisco and the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. And I never got to see a game at Ebbets Field (although my big brother saw two of them there). I forgave my dad ... eventually!

I have watched all of them from the beginning through this one, and this one made me laugh more than any other. I don't normally care for Robert Q. Lewis, but he was on a roll during the mystery guest. Lucy and Desi were funny. Swiddish. I was dying.
i love seeing Lucy out of character, she is so sweet & has a almost a shyness about her.
I have read much about Desi and Lucy and you are very perceptive. Lucy WAS actually shy and Desi was the outgoing one. It is said he was the life of the party when they were entertaining at home while Lucy was serious and quiet. She was a complex person and he was a typical Latin womanizer. She couldn’t understand why he would say he only loved her, and that his dalliances didn’t mean anything. Even after they split up and both remarried, they remained close until Desi’s death. A tragic love story for Lucy and Desi.
Both of these brilliantly talented comic geniuses were also devastatingly attractive physically...and oozing charm...just beautiful!

Stunningly beautiful woman, we forget that she was a successful model, before her break in movies. I think she is in the top 10 of the most beautiful women in classic hollywood.

Vic Perry, the pickpocket, died just 19 years after this episode. He also played in "The Atomic Man", "Julius Caesar", "Raiders of the River", "Mozambique" and a few other shows and movies. I wish I could find a video of Victor G Perry pickpocket.

There is no comparison from the entertainment in the 50s and 60s 2 today now it is for the most part of noxious too loud to Speedy and only for the segment of our society that does not know the difference in quality. However I do have to say some of it is quality but I would say most of it is not do the trick for me

I could tell Desi’s accent by the second “mm-hmm” and Lucy’s fake accent was one she used on the show! Love this!
People had so much class back then. They really were america's heros. Both rose up from nothing to the peak of their profession even owning a studio and they both represented marriage and family. You could see there were very much in love. I believe Lucille when she spoke of the letters that she received of people begging her not to divorce. The TV studio bosses said America would never accept a Cuban married to Lucille and when they divorced America could not imagine them being separated from each other. America knew the whisperings that Desi drank and was unfaithful but to America this couple was family and America reacted to them as if they were family. That is as much a compliment, to be loved as family by an entire nation, as is rising from poverty to aristocracy.
Although, one has to wonder...20 years of a hit series...plus a major Hollywood Studio...one has to wonder...what happened to all that money? Lucy died and her house hadn't been remodeled since "The Lucy Show" went off the air. The whole house had to be gutted because it was so out of date...and the jewelry...it certainly didnt wind up with Lucy Arnaz.

Our family always watched "I Love Lucy" and "What's My Line." Great TV. And on "What's My Line," everyone on the panel was so charming and articulate.
