England refused to intervene and disrupt the local markets and economy of the island by buying out all the food. Common misconception that England didn't help at all, they did, they also had to help Wales, Scotland and themselves too. 15 Billion is the total cost for the English Taxpayer.

@ApeX they literally forced the Irish peasants to use all their land to farm cattle to be exported to England and left a tiny fraction of land with poor soil where you could pretty much only grow potatoes.
You can't pretend to be for free markets when it's convenient.

Interesting fact about how the potato entered Greek homes right after our war of Independence (1821-1830). Kapodistrias, Greece's governor at the time, brought the potato to Greece as a cheap and nutritional food for the damaged population. He tried sharing it around by going door by door but the people were suspicious and they threw it away.
He then realized that what he had to do was give the potato "a fake value", so that the peasants would like it. And so, he put the potatoes in a warehouse and put guards all around it but told them that if they see any peasant sneaking in to steal the potatoes, the guards would have to pretend they haven't noticed them.
By the end of the week, the storage was empty.

There's a similar story about gin and tonic. Quinine tonic water helps prevent malaria but the British soldiers didn't like the taste so the order was given that it should be given to the officers to give it prestige and the common soldier wanted it from then on.

    two points of clarification/correction:
    1) even though the potato has fewer calories/kg of product compared to rice or wheat as you mentioned, potato skins are rich in micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, which is another reason they outcompete those other crops in certain circumstances. Edit: it you eat nothing but rice, wheat, or corn for days on end, you will very quickly become sick and eventualyl die of this micronutrient deficiency. You can eat nothing but potatos for a long, long time though.
    2) the development of a potato monoculture, at least in Ireland, was not due to lackadaisical peasants just not caring, but rather due to the extremely limited field space Irish peasants had to grow their own food on, due to the demand for Irish beef by the British. Even during the famine there, Britain was extracting huge amounts of foodstuffs from the island *and* prohibiting the importation of cheap American grain that might have alleviated the hunger.

the green part isn't poisonous, it's just chlorophyll, but the presence of chlorophyll indicates that the potato has most likely also begun producing poison, so you should throw away the whole potato, nit just the green part

Depends on the amount of "green-ness." If it's just a few, relatively small spots, you can just (thoroughly/deeply) cut off the green bits. If it's a significant amount of the potato's surface that's green, throw it out.
It should be noted that actual, severe cases of poisoning from glycoalkaloids in bad potatoes are quite rare (not saying it doesn't happen though, again, cut the green parts away or throw the entire thing out). You're more likely to just get an upset/bad/aching stomach which, while certainly unpleasant, is mostly just a nuisance.

if the potato is green, it means that it's been sticking out of the ground (its not supposed to), and when a potato grows out of the ground, it starts to produce toxins to defend itself from pests.

A potato trivia from The Philippines:
In the Philippines, potatoes are called patatas instead of papa, contrary to other hispanic american nations. This is because The Philippines Islands were governed directly by Spain in the early 1800s after Mexico gained indipendence, hence adopting iberian spanish vocabulary.

@Sorcerers_Apprentice but if anyone in Europe had known, it could have been done in other places, which would have increased available food supply in Europe, then there would have been less demand for extra corn from other lands. When the British went to buy extra corn, they were out bid because the potato harvest failed throughout large areas of Europe. Additionally, if dehydrating potatoes had been a thing, there might have been a market for the extra potatoes that were wasted in the years prior to the pestilence.

Favorite potato recipe: Red potato, skin on, batonnet cut, toss in a colander under running water for ~1/2 minute, toss in a colander with a paper towel until it's thoroughly damp and the potatoes no longer glisten, toss in a colander under a light oil spray for a few seconds, then toss in a colander while shaking seasonings evenly over them. Spread them on parchment paper on a foreman grill (preheated) and leave until they're as crisp as french fries (~30-40 min). For seasonings I use adobo or a cajun spice mix. Also have home-made ketchup on the side for dipping.

    • @RPSchonherr
      @RPSchonherr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ranchopatriot Not the same thing as what I said. The video just said it made it harder for armies to just grab the potatoes and go. What I said was armies would burn fields to deprive the enemy of food but the potato being under ground wasn't bothered by burning and kept the other side fed. Not only that, an army marching through your field of rye and maybe having a battle there would destroy your crop but not the potato. It really had little to do with the potato being harder to plunder as, if you know how potatoes are harvested and stored like the video said before ready to consume, there would be barns full of potatoes ready to take.
