Immanuel: Isaiah 7 and the Syro-Ephraimite Crisis

The Syro-Ephraimite Crisis may not be familiar to many people but it’s an incredibly important socio-political development in the relations between Israel and Judah in the late 8th century. The kingdom of Damascus and Israel form a coalition against the kingdom of Judah. The young king of Judah seeks an alliance from Tiglath-Pileser III - the king of Assyria. With this background we can see how Isaiah chapter 7 can be fleshed out. And while this is often associated with Christmas - it can be relevant at any time!
