Oh dear, this was fun to watch. Yeah, Jens is very special. This is what inspired so many bands after Meshuggah. They create a sound wall, and then they blow you in the face. Very few bands can do this and get away with it, leaving you puzzled in front of them. Like perhaps Neurosis on their Thru Silver in Blood tour. I saw them and forgot to get a second beer, I forgot to smoke a cigarette, and nearly forgot my name. Pressed to an invisible wall. This is also, what Meshuggah does to me. If you listen to e.g. Periphery, you can hear clearly, where they come from, and this is Meshuggah for sure. And how do you even phrase your lyrics to such music? You can't hear that on the isolated vocals, but this is part of the concept of extremely rhythm-based stuff that they do. And it is crazy. Which is, what the band name actually means. And he does it his very personal way. It doesn't sound nice. It does not even sound deep, because it does not have to be deep - the instruments are as low as it gets when it comes to stringed instruments. 8 strings because f'ck why not and nobody else does it. Bass same tuning as the guitars, because nobody could hear an octave lower. You have to develop another type of scream/growl to be heard in this brutal soundscape they have. Yeah - loved your analysis, as I always do. And as of this delay effect, just one repetition, mostly ducked as long as he screams, but enough to be very clearly heard. Also kind of classic. Nothing more needed. Tati from Jinjer also has just that one delay feedback setting for everything, bit less, but it is always there, and that's enough for metal. Period. Yeah, that was fun. Keep up what you do, my dear Scottish dudette, very appreciated. Have a great week!
If you like isolated vocals, you should check out Corey Taylor's vocal tracks from the Iowa album of Slipknot. Those are the perfect examples of an unhealthy screaming. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorites, but those screams really took a toll on his vocal cords. He was not trying to "imitate" screaming with some sort of safe technique, those are pure damaging, loud, and therefore wonderful screams.
Nice! Im impressed that software isoldated that delay almost perfectly as well. 😮 Hope you are well, Mel! ❤ If you do more extreme metal vocals I'd suggest Travis Ryan cause he does so many different things. Your Disposal would be an interesting choice of song. If you wanna do a combination of cleans and growls, I'd personally be really interested in hearing an Amorphis track. Perhaps 'Majestic Beast' cause he goes looooowwww. Also I'd love to hear Mr Halford like this 🤔
you reference the studio screaming video, that would be during the Chaosphere/destroy erase improve days. He was literally screaming his head off on those album. I do think he has had problem with his voice over the years, cus he screams in a much lower register now than he did back then. you hear the change from Nothing and onwards.
What’s funny is Jens is arguably his most monotone in Bleed, which works tonally. Songs like Pineal Gland Optics, Neurotica, New Millennium Cyanide Christ, Pravus really show his range and rhythm. If you have time, 100% check out this live remaster from 2003, one of the tightest concerts i’ve seen. th-cam.com/video/N_nKzHWZkCQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Sr2gI6_Rycv4Rqaf
Interesting deep dive. If You isolated either John Bush or Joey Belladonna from Anthrax, it would be pretty eye opening... Keep up the great work My Fine Scottish Lady! ❤❤❤
people praise will ramos but he doesn't have the volume and depth in his screams and growls, and even his set of vocal tech is very limited compared to beatboxers like king inertia, clr, osis, improver, taras stanin ect. vahtang probably has the best outward throat bass.

best way to describe jens's vocal tech: it's like a fryscream but using the false chords instead and mixing it with a bit of medium-level chest voice.

Mel 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
Alex Terrible would be interesting and he does it loud enough to be heard loud and clear without a mic ;-)
Ohhh actually I didn’t think of of him! Good shout 😄
