This is definitely up there, but my first movie I saw in this genre holds that spot - Primal Fear. I hope you will react to it one day!
For me it's a coin toss between The French Connection and LA Confidential.

For those of us who quickly recognized that its most likely a head in the box, I think Fincher made a great move by having Somerset recoil away to indirectly tell us what was in there. It immediately tells us that he recognizes who it is and why he bolts for Mills straight away.
This wasn't Fincher's decision. Fincher wanted the head to be shown.
I watched this in cinema and literally threw my popcorn bag up in the air at the "sloth" scene... to this day I don't know if it hit anyone as I was too busy to get my heart rate back under control 😂

The first time I saw this (opening day) there was a power outage just as John walks into the station and yells “Detective!”. I waited around for an hour and then had to come back the next day to see what happened.

At the end when he said he agrees with the second part - the world was worth fighting for - I think he was saying that he's going to stick around and keep fighting as a detective.

Highly recommend ''the crow 1994'' which is based on the comics 'The crow'... it's the greatest vengeance movie ever made, it's action packed, and pure art that's done with heart and the main actor 'Brandon Lee' son of 'Bruce Lee' was absolutely phenomenal within this movie which was his last movie due to he died while filming this movie which was right at the beginning of the movie which they filmed last. People believe the movie itself was cursed due to strange things were happening while filming this movie and the movie itself was basically a reflection of Brandon Lee's death which is creepy. True fact that the face makeup you see on Brandon's face within this movie is what led Heath Ledgers 'Joker' makeup to happen....it's strange that both these actors Brandon and heath died playing these characters that looked similar to each other.

Yeah, I've got a couple of friends who work at UPS, and apparently that was a catchphrase around the workplace for a while after this film came out.
I was sacked from a job for saying the 'what's in the box' line, apparently some of the mourners moaned about it.

that was a hard one for me to get into i liked the zodiac documentary but the film was too slow for me i did eventually did finish it but i prefer this film to that one this is an easier pill to swallow so to speak!
I saw this movie for the first time in college and ever since then I get nervous sometimes when I receive a small box/package 🤦🏻♀️😂 what is truly disturbing about this movie is that they never show the murders happen. It leaves it open to the imagination.

Kevin Space went uncredited, in the opening credits. When he showed up, covered in blood, in the third act, it was obvious s***was going to hit the fan. Pun intended.
I love that Ninetailedbrush was trying to will David to be reasonable in the end, to make John Doe suffer. But I think there are few of us that wouldn't do what David did. Someone murders my wife and child, they die. I love Brad Pitt in the end, his performance is so gut wrenching and incredible. The movie is a cinema classic for all times.
Sure, it might be what John Doe wanted, but it would also be what I wanted, too.
john doe is like THE generic person name, very often used as such. feels like kind of a joker type nonexistent backstory.

Lengthy read but fascinating analysis of the film's themes:
Apathy is the biggest theme of the film. Many discussions within the film allude to it. Aside from the obvious apathy speech Somerset (Morgan Freeman) gives to Mills (Brad Pitt) in the bar, but also when Somerset explains how the first thing women are taught in rape prevention class is to not yell "help" because no one responds to "help" but instead to yell "fire" (as Somerset put it "in a big city, minding your own business is a science"). People in big cities are apathetic to any one stranger's individual suffering but a fire can spread to multiple buildings which affects everyone, which is why people respond to "fire".
Throughout the film, Somerset repeatedly mentions how much he hates the city. All his years on the force has caused him to be cynical, jaded and apathetic. Particular example: all the noise, police sirens, screaming and crime that he hears outside his apartment window keeps him up at night which is why he uses a metronome, to drown out the noise. He has become apathetic to the crime going on just outside his place-- the metronome is symbolism for Somerset's apathy. Also, note, right after Mills denounces Somerset's apathy speech in the bar ("I don't think you're quitting because you believe in the things you say, I think you want to believe them because you're quitting"), Somerset goes home that night and destroys the metronome. Mills's words really affected him causing Somerset to care at least a little bit again, which is why he destroyed the metronome (i.e. his apathy).
And John Doe's words during the car ride "Only in a world this shitty can we say these were innocent people. We see a deadly sin on every street corner and we tolerate it. We tolerate morning, noon and night." APATHY. Also, many characters, even minor ones, are super judgmental and have little sympathy for people's suffering. Like when the SWAT team raids the apartment of the mummified sloth victim tied to the bed, the lead SWAT cop (played by Bob from "Office Space") says to him "you got what you deserved"-- but then when he's alive and taken to the hospital, the doctor says "he's experienced about as much pain and suffering as anyone I've encountered... and he still has Hell to look forward to." To me, it was always such a bizarre thing for a doctor to say given their Hippocratic oath and their duty to care but ya know... APATHY.
THE LAWYERS:
The lawyer that's punished for greed, as John Doe put it "this is a man who dedicated his life to making money by lying with every breath he could muster to keeping murderers and rapists off the streets." That lawyer didn't care about justice or morality.
Also, John Doe's lawyer has virtually no emotion while he's blackmailing the cops with John Doe's plea bargain. Either they agree and John Doe pleads guilty or if they don't agree, John Doe will plead insanity. The lawyer says "with the extreme nature of these crimes, I could easily get him off with such a plea." The lawyer seems quite apathetic to justice and the victims of the case while he, as Mills puts it, sits there in his $3000 suit (indicating he's much like the slain greedy lawyer). He also says to them "if you don't agree to my client's specific conditions, these two bodies will never be found" to which the black district attorney (Richard Roundtree) retorts "at this point, I'm inclined to let them rot" -- APATHY. Also the lawyer in the same scene: "My client would like to remind you that two more people are dead. The press would have a field day if the police didn't seem to concerned about finding them and giving them a proper burial."
THE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS:
The proprietor of the whorehouse is questioned by Mills in the glass interrogation room. Mills asks him "you didn't see anything strange or suspicious, anyone with a package under their arm?" He responds with "everybody coming in there has got a package under their arm, some people have suitcases full of stuff". The man "sees nothing" and questions nothing. Mills then asks him "do you like your job, the things you see?" To which he responds, "No, but that's life, isn't it?". He doesn't like it, but he tolerates it because it's a living. APATHY. Also the owner of the S&M leather shop who designed the knife strap-on costume is asked disgustedly by Somerset "you actually made this for him?" The owner replies "yea, so what, I made weirder shit than this." APATHY
This might be reading too much into it but the pizza shop where they meet the FBI agent with the library files. Somerset mentions that the pizza shop must have had "at least 50 health violations last inspection". They clearly don't care about standards and safety. APATHY. And for some reason, the city didn't even shut them down. Did the health dept simply tolerate it? More apathy??
Also, the real estate agent that sold the "subway" apartment to Mills and his wife. The man was a scumbag who only cared about selling the place and obviously didn't care about their discomfort. APATHY. And also, the sloth victim's landlord was just happy that the rent was always paid on time and that there were no complaints from or about that tenant. He never bothered to ever check up on him. APATHY.
DETECTIVE MILLS:
Also notice Mills is the only character that "cares" in the film. As Somerset sarcastically asks him, "you want to be a hero and you're gonna make a difference?" Mills, the only character who supposedly "cares" gets punished the most in the film; his whole world gets turned upside down by the end. Mills, the man and his philosophy on life, is destroyed-- and he will undoubtedly become as jaded and cynical as Somerset. Mills's own words to John Doe in the car, "I don't see you as a Messiah. After 2 months, no one will remember this. No one will care. You're a movie of the week, you're a fucking T-shirt at best." Also, when Mills tells the story of when he fired his gun in the line of duty, he remembers how he felt during the incident but can't remember the name of his fellow cop that was shot-- this was after he witnessed the first few murders. I think this was supposed to signify the small but subtle beginning of the erosion of Mill's sympathy. But I could just be looking too much into it.
Also, again, note at the end of the film when Mills is put into the back of the police cruiser, the captain (Lee Ermey) says to Somerset "don't worry, we'll take care of him"-- which pretty much means the department will cover up the incident. Even though Mills murdered a suspect, the captain and the rest of the police department is APATHETIC to his crime (Mills's sin of wrath will go unpunished).
The film is just swimming with apathetic characters and I'm sure there's other examples that I haven't mentioned. But goddamn, what a script! It seems like no line of dialogue or detail is accidental or wasted. It all serves a purpose and contributes to the story's themes.The film is almost sickening and revolting given the themes and how effective it is at conveying them; the screenplay is astonishingly literary. It's a brilliantly written masterpiece. How it didn't get nominated at the Oscars is baffling. I highly recommend watching this video which explores the film in greater detail:

The crux of this movie is in the last line. The world is a horrible place, but it is worth saving. For every horrible person in it, there are good kind people worth protecting.

Classic would be the "Forbidden planet" with one of the greatest sci-fi actors of all time, Leslie Nielsen.
This movie and Schindler's list were movies where the entire theater left in silence. Obviously, the reason for silence was different for each film....but the silence. Wow

Another great movie for Brad Pitt's acting (albeit, more melodramatic/tortured) would be Interview With A Vampire, I'd be interested to see what you guys thought about how they present the story and how it all unravels. Also 1995's 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis!
Twelve Monkeys was amazing...the best film from a real visionary.

“I don’t wanna say a lot” “Kevin Spacey is in it” that was the biggest surprise!!! 😂 for me this is a classic, the sloth victim… still hunts me to this day and I know is coming but still I scream EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.
He doesn’t know who Kevin spacey is…it’s more of like an education thing.
Lust is the hardest sin to watch and the only scene which has no gore!
Its so cool now when I rewatched Seven I constantly see so much similarity with The Batman. I mean the whole vibe of The Batman was inspired by this as well as cople of other crime/thriller movies like this one but Seven specifically it has soo much in common with.

Definitely! I went to see The Batman with two friends who hadn't seen "Seven" and during the break I couldn't stop gushing about the similarities. They loved the vibe of Batman so they said they'd check it out :D

I really loved this movie because of Kevin Spacey before all the controversy about him. He was one of my favorite actors in Hollywood. This movie is very intriguing as it deals with the psyche of an intelligent psychopath killer who plays cat and mouse game with the detectives. And coming from different faith and culture, I also learned about 7 deadly sins which is the theme of the movie. This is definitely one of the best crime thrillers but it's hard to watch it again.
He did no wrong
I think one thing with David's character is that while he's rash and impatient, he's also on the moral highground compared to Somerset. Much like the other characters, he's complex and well written
Seven is one of the greatest psychological thriller movies of all time. The story, music, images, astomphere, tension, and performance's was outstanding and incredible. The tone and element was dark, gritty, urban, raw, graphic, and explicit which works perfectly for the movie. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying William Somerset and David Mills as they both put tons of emotion and depth into their roles. It was decent. To this day the ending still gives me chills and goosebumps as it gives a insightful and articulate representation of how true evil wins 😰😱 and I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍💯😎👍
A masterpiece. I watched this movie on video when I was like 16 or 17 or so. I felt so weird afterwards. Like, corrupted. I thought I had lost my "innocence" long before, but this just... this broke my innocence. Disturbed.
One of the darkest and most shocking endings in a movie EVER!!! This movie ruined me and I needed to watch Carol Burnett for several hours after my first time watching it!
He changed his plan when he encountered Mills. I always wonder what the original plan was.
An absolute masterpiece. The atmosphere, how everything is like a puzzle is brilliant. And the final moments are devastating.
I love David Fincher films. I am looking forward to Gone Girl, a fantastic film. The less you know about, the better it is. Don’t watch any trailers and let your brain get fried.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Two detectives solving gruesome, psychological crimes directly based on the Seven Deadly Sins within a week- interesting enough that even my late father would've taken the cases.
The elder character, Somerset, visited the library to look up how to properly solve them- Paradise Lost by Milton and The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, really caught me!!!!
Looking back, it is simply because 10 years after this movie was released, I actually did read Chaucer's book, by which one of the stories had mentioned the Sins!!!!🤔
The whole "He'll plead insanity" thing....thats actually really rare in real life and most lawyers dont try it. Because you have to be able to prove without a doubt that the person doesnt understand right from wrong. Has no understanding of consequences. And the fact that Doe turned himself in or ran from the police is an admission of guilt. And even if he did successfully win an insanity case, its not like he gets off scott free. I know they were worried about potentially never finding a body - but they should have tried negotiating something on their terms.

i saw this in a packed theater on opening night. there was a collective wimper/gasp in the audience when they figured out the ending. you could hear girls weeping. people went "oh no...f***" when he shot him. one of the craziest audience interaction movies i've been apart of. and i saw probably 500 movies in the theater between '88 and '00 my paps and i saw everything that was anything in that time period
There are three movies that I will always remember for the endings: Seven, The original Saw movie (before things turned into full gore mode), and The Game (which I think you guys will love as well, and is also a David Fincher film). I loved NinetailedBrush his reaction to this: you could almost hear the gears grind in his mind, trying to piece together the end: and he was very, very close to figuring it out too. So really kudos to that. I sadly had the ending spoiled for me in Highschool, when I overheard two classmates talking about this ending. Which while I still enjoyed the film (as much as you can enjoy something so dark that is ;)) did ruin the full impact of the film for me. That’s why I hate spoilers lol. Anyways, another great reaction, and can’t wait for the next one. 😊

There's a running fan theory that the story is taking place in Gotham.
Going down the David Fincher rabbit hole would be Zodiac and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
I love the theory they the City they’re in in this is Gotham City.
It’s Gotham, there’s no Batman or Jim Gordon yet, and this John Doe is a Batman Villain with a gimmick and everything.
I even think that Mills eventually turns into the Joker eventually.

Yeah that's what i'm thinking, not just the entire films but the ending situation is exactly what you're saying.
It's pretty much lays the question on to you of what happens if a normal everyday person in real life is being place in a batman doesn't kill the joker scenario. Where someone in life is taken away from you by someone awful and is right at your door step completely defenseless waiting to get something out of you. it's either you kill or not kills.

I’m saying Mills becomes the Joker with Jon Doe being his biggest influence.
So, let’s say this is Gotham, Mills would have to do time for murdering Jon Doe, he more than likely would spend that time in Arkham Asylum.
Because Jon Doe took Mills’ ideology and flipped it on its head, and makes Mills embody Wrath,
Mills believes he will never smile again after the death of his wife and child at the hands of a serial killer, and Carves a Smile into his own face, adopting a new identity as an agent of chaos.
Brad Pitt becomes Heath Ledger’s Joker, with intimate knowledge of how the GCPD works,
cuts his fingertips like Jon doe so no one can identify him,

Se7en is a Dark Knight prequel...
I love how every unsubstantiated notion people come up with about fiction gets called a "theory." Theories are composed of facts and give context to them. This doesn't even rise to the level of a hypothesis. This is just people saying "Wouldn't it be cool if...." with no actual evidence. Gotham was based on actual crime-ridden cities, not the other way around.
I mean, it’s not too far fetched.
Yeah, Gotham City is really based mostly on New York City, in the past, sometime after the the city changed its name from New Amsterdam, it was nicknamed Gotham, there weren’t even minor league sports teams that played in New York with the name of Gotham.
But that doesn’t change the fact that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy isn’t heavily influenced by David Fincher’s work.
Look at the similarities, a Deranged killer that Mutilates himself and others, a killer that lets himself get caught by the authorities as part of his plan.
Same Actors in this and in Batman Begins, Morgan Freeman, Mark Boone Junior..
I could absolutely see a world where Seven is a Prequel to Batman Begins, and after the events of John Doe’s plan Detective Mills looses his mind and becomes the Joker..

I only watched this movie once, when I was about 17 or 18, and some scenes are still living in my head. Haunting. So good yet so terrifiying

If we keep them on this binge of MESSED UP movies (Especially with Joker up next) i feel like it's only a matter of time before they are forced to watch Requiem For A Dream and then become completely different people by the end.

There’s an alternate ending that never made it to the screen. On the dvd there’s a story board where sommerset kills doe before mills does so the bad guy doesn’t win. Brad Pitt wanted this ending
If you liked this movie, I strongly recommend watching 'Zodiac', also directed by David Fincher.
It's based on the real-life "Zodiac Killer" murders that happened in California during the 70s, and it's my personal favourite Fincher movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. are the main actors.

I think that John and David changed William's perspective. He started by looking down at David and how confident and half cocked he is. After John did what he did, William saw that he had more in common with the killer than the cop. He realised that David was right. He was apathetic and numb because he had been working in that city to long. Now he's going to put off retirement to make some kind of difference no matter how futile it seems because someone has to

As someone who loves special makeup effects, I tried seeking out images from Se7en's production, but they are few and far in between. In fact, a lot of the makeup and fake corpses had to be cut from filming because they were *too* realistic and disturbing. However, you can find a featurette from the old laserdisc edition of the film on TH-cam, showcasing the countless polaroids taken of the Sloth victim's progress into the final result the detectives find in the apartment. Even with makeup artist Rob Bottin's commentary accompanying it, the slide show steadily becomes very disturbing.
I always thought that the quote at the end suggests that Morgan Freeman's character intends to continue in the police and fight for the world, even despite its horrors. Before this he was completely burnt out and felt that the world wasn't even worth fighting for, hence his retirement.
If you haven't already seen them, Fight Club and The Game are both excellent David Fincher films

This is a dark and disturbing film, but unlike something like Requiem for a Dream, this is one I can watch again and still enjoy the story. And you’re lucky that Ninetailed Brush has limited media/pop culture referenced and the ending wasn’t spoiled as many seem to be roasting you for :)

David didn't change Somerset, Tracy did. For me it is Paltrow's best performance -- she makes Tracy so genuinely warm and lovable, and she is so kind to Somerset, it's no wonder that he cares for her despite the walls he has put up. He cares for Mills too but Tracy made him more vulnerable. Which is why he stays on and doesn't retire.
Somerset was a lonely man without family or connection. Yet he felt real familial love and compassion for her and wanted to keep fighting the good fight -- for her, and for Mills too. He recognizes by the end quote that he still feels despair but there is hope there too, that he can make a difference.
(I know the quote was added later, but I love it and think it's the perfect ending. I am judging the movie by its final presentation.)

I personally like to think that no jury on earth would convict Mills for killing John...I sure as hell would have done the same in his place, and I think most people would.
The one slightly dodgy thing about the seven deadly sins motif is that the sloth killing really wasn't relevant to the sin in question. The other victims were examples of things like greed and gluttony, but the sloth guy was a dope-dealing child molester who just got tied to a bed, not a lazy guy who lay in bed all the time by choice. But I suppose Catholic tradition would never have made pederasty a deadly sin for obvious reasons.
The first time I saw this movie I was frightened to do anything or go anywhere. I was like I'm all of the above they'd only have to get me, one and done lol and still to this day I say this is the last movie that really scared me. Great commentary guys! 😊
Somerset is intellectual. observant. been on the job a longtime. David a good detective, but has a fierce dislike for the criminals that it clouds his judgement. This film explores all the vile, nasty injustice in the world. How we as people pass by it without a second glance. long as it's not interfering with our life. some of us may think that. Kevin's character you kind of see where he's coming from, but it doesn't excuse his action to kill. Seven is well made film.

I wrote one of my long theses about symbolism in action throughout films, including the scene when William tosses that metronome across the apartment. I agree with ninetailbrush for sure that the rhythm of it is a consistent pulse for him to fall asleep to, and David is stirring up that rhythm. William has fallen into apathy and a sense of realism that is obviously pragmatic but also very, very lonesome for him. I’m sure he was inspired by his partner’s hope, real or not. It also isn’t really for him to decide whether or not David’s hope is valid - maybe that’s also something he was thinking about when he couldn’t stand the metronome anymore

However I found that it’s a fictional city in Bardach county, and I found this about the history of the city. The city was incorporated in 1926 and has always been full of crime in the 70 years since. The population was 8,300,105 in a 1995 estimate. It seems to be inspired by New York.
