Solo Overnight In The Thatched Reed Winter Survival Shelter During Snowstorm (87 Days episode 25)

  • With a Snow Storm on the way, I thought it was a perfect time to do a Solo Overnighter. So I prepared to go spend the night in my Thatched reed winter survival shelter. I packed up my gear and loaded it all into the sled and hiked out to the shelter. The storm dumped over a foot of snow in places but I was warm and cozy in the thatched reed hut. So much for survival, I sat by the fire and whittled all night and got a good night sleep on my reed sleeping mat. I cooked and egg in the ashes and coals and roasted an apple for dinner . The next day I woke up my sleeping fire that I was able to keep going throughout the night, Using my Fire banking method. This made it easy to get a fire started before even getting out of bed. Once I got up I made some coffee and stir-fry from Thrive life. They make freeze-dried meals for dinners at home but work great for camping. The weather outside might be frightful but inside my thatched reed winter survival shelter It's quite delightful!!!
I do not recommend Survival frogs machete after further use. I found it was impossible to cut anything over 3/4 of an inch. Survival Frog products are like getting the Pu Pu platter at the Chinese restaurant. Some of the stuff is really tasty but every so often you just get a rat on a stick.

One summer several years ago my friends and i went camping for 7 weeks at a small pond in the middle of the woods. We had a tent ,sleeping bags , lanterns coolers, food, fishing poles all that stuff. But after 3 weeks my friend that had our only vehicle hurt his back and he went home to heal so we had no way to get to town for supplies. We lasted another week with the supplies we had , then ran out of food and lantern fuel so we started foraging and living on just what we could find or catch. For two weeks we ate nothing but wild leeks, dandelion greens, the occasional sunfish , cattails or sometimes just sumac tea cause we couldn't find anything to eat. After that my friend showed up with supplies and we spent the last week in luxury. But to be completely honest, those two weeks when we had only what we could forage were the best 2 weeks i ever spent in my life. And i think it changed me. After that summer alot of the things in everyday life that used to stress me out and bother me just didnt seem as important anymore. It was only 2 weeks but living off the land taught me what was really important in life. It gave me the mindset that if something doesn't hurt your health, or effect your everyday life than its really no big deal. Whats really important is being alive , being healthy and having some place cozy to sleep at night. Everything else is just a bonus.

Beast Man That is a great story. I have had similar experiences. None as long as yours. But facing survival shows the true mettle of a man or woman. It makes you stronger and a better Human being in so many ways. One time, my wife and I did a survival trek up in the mtns. in winter with no food, shelter, or sleeping bag. 4 days, 3 nites. One quart of water per person. No backpack. Bushwacking. No trail either. It was part of a survival course we took together. We were at each other's throats at first. Mostly 'cause I got us lost. One thing it taught me was humility and patience in others. We ended up getting married and have been together for 35 years. But we most certainly wouldn't be if we didn't take separate vacations.

Hi there, and thank you for the video! I noticed that you changed your endorsement of the machete because you could not saw anything larger than larger than 3/4" in diameter. I used a machete of the size you used often where I grew up, and our machetes didn't even have a saw on one side. They only have the blade. When I was a teenager working on geophysical survey crews in the Big Thicket and Atchafalaya swamps and forests, I could quickly down 4" and larger saplings with a sharp machete. I cut small, medium, and large stuff all day long, 6 days a week.
I just had to learn how to make cuts at the right angles, and to hit the spots I needed with good control. That is what is so great about machetes. They can cut through grasses, vines, canes, bamboo, and saplings. We always carried a large flat file with a coarse and a smoother side in our machete sheath, and used it often to keep the blade sharp.
Quick back country trick that you might find interesting: We had enormous, impenetrable blackberry briar thickets that were over 15-20 feet high and up to a mile or more square in size. During surveys, we had to cut through everything for a space of 6' wide and 9' high along our compass line so that the surveyor could walk trough to survey the line. We got through the thickets by cutting down 3-4" diameter saplings and cutting the tops and branches off to make a pole around 25 feet long. We laid the sapling pole against the wall of thorny canes, and began walking on the pole from the bottom to the top. As we took steps on the pole, it forced the canes down closer to ground level. We then cut back and forth from left to right as we walked up the pole, cutting all of the canes.
This was the only way that we could get through that stuff down in the deep woods without getting all torn up from the thorns, which can penetrate and hook around into just about any protective clothing. Can't wear a lot of protective clothing down there in the summer anyway, unless you like dropping dead from dehydration and heat stroke....
It took a 3 person machete crew 3-6 hours to clear a mile of that stuff.

That shelter is amazing, you are a true outdoorsman , and the snow sheds right off that thing, great design! I loved watching you start the fire with 1 hand and showing how to keep the dire alive overnight, valuable encouraging lesson. Loved hearing you give props to the Lord, God bless you for that! I've been watching a bunch of channels prepping for a week long backpacking trip in the Cherokee National forest on the AT. You have one of the nearest channels on TH-cam; thanks for the lesson and ideas invaluable to me! I do every last week of the month , even longer sometimes, being on disability I live on 770 a month. Once my bills are paid it is almost all gone by the 5th or sixth of the month. then I do without the rest of the month, with only what I could get for the month lol. Great videos

Social Security Disability caused me to live on nothing the last week of the month. My friends were horrified, it got to be routine. And I know I can do it.

I've used a shortened machete (about 13 inch blade) for 15-20 years in the Canadian bush. People thought that I was nuts...machetes are for the jungle they said, use an axe in Canada, eh? Well along with a good knife, folding saw and small maul for splitting, I done real good out in the woods. Now I always have a machete with me, even car camping, and have never been disappointed. Great video, I love yurts!
