A friend and I went bear hunting last winter. We were almost to the place where we were going to hunt, and saw a sign that said "bear left", so we turned around and came home.
Some buddies and I were up to deer camp years ago and each evening we'd take turns going to the spring for water. This one night it was my pal Joe's turn so he grabbed the bucket and headed off. Two minutes later, he was back. Slammed the door behind him and barred it. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Bear in the spring up to his waist in the water," Joe managed to say. "That bear is just as scared of you as you are of it," I said. "If that's true, that water ain't fit to drink."
When I was 16 I went to Philmont, New Mexico which is a Boy Scout camp for 2 weeks of hiking and camping. One night one of the kids forgot to hang his backpack into a tree (there was food in it) and we got invaded by a couple of Black Bears who wanted the peanut butter cracker in his backpack. We got invaded twice that night and after the second time I wouldn't go back into my tent and slept near the campfire. We banged on pots and pans to scare them away both times. In the morning we found out why we had gotten invaded and there was nothing left of the kids backpack.
A guy lost in the woods three days and nothing to eat finally sees a bald eagle. Shoots it, cleans it, cooks it, and eats it. Wouldn't you know it but a game warden shows up, takes him to his truck and writes him a citation. At court the man pleads to the judge about being lost and hungry and how he shot and are the bald eagle out of desperation. The judge listen to his story and says 'I'm gonna let you off with a warning...by the way what's a bald eagle taste like? " The guy looks up at the judge and says "Kinda like spotted owl."
Stick banging won't help. You need to make noises that aren't familiar to bears. They're used to hearing sticks & twigs knocking around. You can wave it to appear larger. But as you're walking, make as much noise as possible, like singing, whistling, etc. Do not carry snacks in your pack unless you absolutely need to. Make it as airtight as you can. Bear can smell food from a mile away, literally. Near pepper spray: only buy EPA approved spray. Others might not spray correctly & you'd be screwed! Pepper spray is better than a gun in most cases. Ots easier to maneuver during a panic.

Pretty sure it’s me because when we go to town I step out on the curb and he has to walk all the way around the car.
