fun fact, the sets for Dark City were reused to film The Matrix. That's one reason it looks similar. However, IIRC the director's cut added or removed (I forget which one) the voice-over. You do not want the version with the narration because its rubbish, but also because it gives the big plot away right at the start of the film. 🤦‍♂

I had a stroke about a decade ago and it caused some awesome things. One of those is I forget all the movies I have seen and loved. Forget they even existed until I see them on these kind of lists, and I will remember the ones I loved, and when I watch them again, since I've forgotten the characters and plot, it's like watching them for the first time again. I love that. Dark City was one I had cherished. Have completely forgotten everything about it except I loved it. Can't wait to re-watch. THANK YOU! so fun.

"A Scanner Darkly" is the best adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story that I've seen. Screamers is very loosely based on one of his short stories, and it's a decent low budget film worth watching. But Scanner is really close to the original novel. It focuses a bit more on the humorous side of the novel, and there's a plot change at the end, but it's not a super major departure. The casting in it is absolutely perfect, especially considering that Philip K Dick was a family friend of Winona Ryder's parents, and in light of its setting: LA/Orange County, the home of Hollywood. I don't know, the cast just seems to totally fit in that particular setting. Reeves is at his best here, as is Ryder. Rory Cochrane, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson as well. It's perfectly done and perfectly acted.

@@boggisthecat - Taking a breath after every one or two words in some scenes, and then speaking full paragraphs without taking a breath in other scenes is just terrible acting, and not consistent with whatever idiotic persona he was trying to portray. No one in real life ever does that and I get the feeling he thought it was brilliant; which it wasn’t. Fortunately he wasn’t in the movie too much. But then there was the garbage plot and the piss-poor sound-track. Whatever. I’m surprised anyone would like this film. To each their own as they say.

The Signal has been a favorite since I first saw a trailer for it. I always appreciated how it’s got a different genre for the three main segments. And for relatively unknown actors, their performances seemed really sincere despite how off the rails the story goes.

I think a good idea for a series of videos would be, lists of every movie that is based on a book by a specific author. Philip K Dick, Arthur C Clarke, etc. That would be a great guide for fans of an author to see books by that author in film. While I’m on the subject, and some of you might not think too highly of her, but I really enjoy the books by Sarah J Maas so I would love to see some of her work adapted into movies or series.

Death Race 2000 is the movie that inspired the Carmageddon game series. Strongly recommend

"Await Further Instructions" didn't even need all the family drama to be extremely interesting, but I guess they had to fill the time with something. I didn't take the drama seriously, but the idea that something like this could actually happen if we were, um, "contacted", had me thinking for days.

Based on your description of Cube I can't help but wonder if you even watched it. Makes me wonder about the accuracy of your descriptions of any others I haven't seen.

When i have recommended Dark City to friends, one of the biggest obstacles for them to overcome is following Rufus Sewell as the MC rather than antagonist.

Derek, noticed you have dipped your toes into anime in the past couple of years. I’ve got a couple of gems for you:
Dagger of Kamui (ninja’s 80’s style, BA sound track, vibes, and visuals)
Doomed Megolopolis (4 part series) 90s style. If you liked Wicked City I really dug Doomed Megalopolis.

The 2 best recommended are Secret Level and Leviathan.
I watched a few of the Secret Level episodes and surprisingly it rocks. Gonna watch a few more.
Leviathan is a really great movie that is post CGI...

If you watched the Abyss, you might as well watch Leviathan and Deep Star 6 and complete the underwater sci-fi trifecta from 1989. And yes, Dark City is a must watch. (Go for Death Race 2000 too).
