fun fact, the sets for Dark City were reused to film The Matrix. That's one reason it looks similar. However, IIRC the director's cut added or removed (I forget which one) the voice-over. You do not want the version with the narration because its rubbish, but also because it gives the big plot away right at the start of the film. 🤦♂
I had a stroke about a decade ago and it caused some awesome things. One of those is I forget all the movies I have seen and loved. Forget they even existed until I see them on these kind of lists, and I will remember the ones I loved, and when I watch them again, since I've forgotten the characters and plot, it's like watching them for the first time again. I love that. Dark City was one I had cherished. Have completely forgotten everything about it except I loved it. Can't wait to re-watch. THANK YOU! so fun.
Watch the directors cut if possible first. Although I find both versions to be great. Explorers with a young Ethan Hawk and River Phoenix. Ive gotta go right now but I’m gonna think of more to feed you 😊! Merry Christmas you filthy animal.
The Signal has been a favorite since I first saw a trailer for it. I always appreciated how it’s got a different genre for the three main segments. And for relatively unknown actors, their performances seemed really sincere despite how off the rails the story goes. This sentence will date me, but it was always on my “Employee Favorite” row at Blockbuster. Thank you for giving it some love.
Dude I have been watching your videos for a long time but this one is on point; I have personally recommended every single title on this list to anyone who appreciates sci fi like me! You nailed it, no joke. My wife and I saw Dark City for the first time back when we were dating and recently dove back into the nostalgia and it was an amazing evening 👍🏻
@@boggisthecat - Taking a breath after every one or two words in some scenes, and then speaking full paragraphs without taking a breath in other scenes is just terrible acting, and not consistent with whatever idiotic persona he was trying to portray. No one in real life ever does that and I get the feeling he thought it was brilliant; which it wasn’t. Fortunately he wasn’t in the movie too much. But then there was the garbage plot and the piss-poor sound-track. Whatever. I’m surprised anyone would like this film. To each their own as they say.
@@Charlie_Davidson yup, to each their own because this was an excellent movie. You must really hate this movie as much as many of us loved it, otherwise why would you take the time to bitch about it?
"A Scanner Darkly" is the best adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story that I've seen. Screamers is very loosely based on one of his short stories, and it's a decent low budget film worth watching. But Scanner is really close to the original novel. It focuses a bit more on the humorous side of the novel, and there's a plot change at the end, but it's not a super major departure. The casting in it is absolutely perfect, especially considering that Philip K Dick was a family friend of Winona Ryder's parents, and in light of its setting: LA/Orange County, the home of Hollywood. I don't know, the cast just seems to totally fit in that particular setting. Reeves is at his best here, as is Ryder. Rory Cochrane, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson as well. It's perfectly done and perfectly acted.
"Dark City" is so good!!! I also like "Scanner Darkly". I remember watching the 30 mins of "The Toxic Avenger" on VHS when I was 11 with my cousin. I left the room and never watched it again. The 1st pedestrian run over scene messed me up and I was done during the transformation scene. Definitely wasn't my cup of tea. Anyway, great video and happy holidays! 😊
Another great list, Darren. DARK CITY is one of my favorite movies ever. Saw it in the theater and fell in love with it instantly. And directed by the Alex Proyas who also directed THE CROW. The OG one. He’s done some great work. He also did GODS OF EGYPT, which even he didn’t like, but I do. Also “I ROBOT”. Both of those had massive studio interference.
Given the Terminator series leads to Neo by the Author, Dark city could easily fit into the "First Batches" of artificial reality tenants that The Matrix was known for.
Radius was the only one on this list that I hadn't seen yet. Amazing concept and you should see it for the twist alone. Great fick. Definitely one of my new favorites. Thanx again Van Damage!
I think a good idea for a series of videos would be, lists of every movie that is based on a book by a specific author. Philip K Dick, Arthur C Clarke, etc. That would be a great guide for fans of an author to see books by that author in film. While I’m on the subject, and some of you might not think too highly of her, but I really enjoy the books by Sarah J Maas so I would love to see some of her work adapted into movies or series.
Dark City has always been one of my favorites! I remember a few critics hating on it when it was released but I just chalked that up to them having supremely bad taste. 🤷♀️
Dark City is one of the most rewatch able movies I’ve🎉-ever seen. Just from this video, I’ll watch it again and probably see something I didn’t see before. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I dearly WISH that streaming services might consider categorizing their playlists like this! I have to copy this all down in order to watch, some of which (I am dating myself) are classics.
Good choice on Leviathan - haven't seen in such a long time but remember it being pretty solid. That first story from The Signal was terrifying. I must watch The Void...have been meaning to; so thanks for the reminder, Darren!
I’m kind of tired of regional restrictions and I don’t want to go with a VPN. Considering my economy my new year resolution will be to get rid of Netflix and Prime. They can shove that restrictions where the sun doesn’t shine.
Thank you sir, for another splendid list. Already started the very good Secret level, and added Special, Timer, Project Wolf, Lawnmower Man, Screamers, Signal, Toxic Avenger, Stake Land to mi queue!
For all you Dark City fans I have an interesting fact to share. In the early days of DVDs, publishers would include all sorts of extras to sell the new medium as a premium experience. New Line Home Video published a Platinum Series DVD of this film which contained a full-length running commentary by Roger Ebert. It’s a fascinating addition and many may be surprised at just how erudite Ebert actually was. Well worth a watch if you can find it.

"Await Further Instructions" didn't even need all the family drama to be extremely interesting, but I guess they had to fill the time with something. I didn't take the drama seriously, but the idea that something like this could actually happen if we were, um, "contacted", had me thinking for days.
Loved Screamers when it first came out :) Is Chronicle on Prime thats a great movie too . I also remember watching Dark City too damn walking down memory lane there :)
Stake Land re-invented the Vampire genre, much in the same vein that 30 Days of Night did. It's an instant classic. If you're a post-apocalyptic movie fan or even a vampire horror fan, do yourself a favor and watch it.
A side note, Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku (which actually is not a sequel to Wicked City) were both based on books written by Hideyuki Kikuchi, the guy who also wrote the Vampire Hunter D series.
I recommend the story screamers is based on. Can't remember the title/author but it's there and its really good. Might be the scrapped screen play. glad I could be of assistance.
Secret Level has some good episodes but a lot are just.. Special is surprisingly good. Await Further Instructions is full of 'interpersonal drama'. The characters are the standard fare.
