    Thanks for checking out Outer Reaches! I'm Karl Redgen, the writer and director of the film. My team and I are thrilled to finally share our movie with the DUST community. If you have any questions about the story, the filmmaking process, or anything else, feel free to drop them in the comments. We'd love to engage with fellow sci-fi fans and hear your thoughts. Thanks again for your support!

    We appreciate everyone checking out the film and taking the time to leave a comment.
    I wanted to clarify a few common questions that have come up so far.
    1. The helmet issue - originally, we had a more complex helmet built for the production. This version was lost in the mail. I made a decision to have one 3D printed days before the shoot. It was either this one or not shoot at all.
    2. The ship is smaller on the outside than on the inside - the pod is hand built out of wood and foam. This was packed into the back of a truck and taken to the location. The interior ship was built on a sound stage. We were required to make it bigger so the actors could perform and we could get the camera in place safely. The key reason that the pod is not bigger is due to our limited budget.
    3. The line "there's no active signs of life" - this line seems to have been taken literally. She is referring to lifeforms, not plant life. A.R.T.E.M.I.S is an exploration pod looking for a habitable planet for humans to repopulate. The planet they land on has a breathable atmosphere and can sustain life. All these creative decisions were carefully considered.
    Making movies is hard work and there are 1000s of decisions and compromises that need to be made. This is especially true when working with such tight budgets and deadlines.
    I hope that helps.

      I liked what you were trying to do, and you did successfully leave the "did it or didn't it infect him?" hanger in at the end. Perhaps it was, as you hint at, all a bit rushed to meet your deadline?
      It also takes a lot of work to make even a short film, and making one short film is more than the vast majority of the keyboard warriors on here have ever done. Kudos and keep moving forward! :)

    Clearly an escape pod, but it has fuel? First shot it's tiny, second shot it's medium, then he's inside and it's huge? TARDIS? Well made, decent looking, good effects and makeup overall, a sudden introduction to a creature that appeared out of nowhere after crash landing, all of these details left me a little lost. Still can't expect everything I guess.

    So many things are wrong with this one: A planet with no life, but you see plants everywhere; the air is breathable, which is highly improbable without life to make it breathable; the alien which comes from nowhere and can read and alter minds; the pod is bigger on the inside than the outside; and the scenario just makes no sense and is poorly explained. alien needs hooked on phonics. Here's why.
      A planet with no life, but you see plants everywhere;" - The conjunction "but" is incorrectly used. It should be replaced with a comma or a semicolon.
      "the air is breathable, which is highly improbable without life to make it breathable;" - The phrase "make it breathable" is redundant and can be revised for clarity.
      "the alien which comes from nowhere" - "which" should be "that" to correctly introduce a restrictive clause.
      "can read and alter minds;" - The semicolon here is unnecessary; a comma would suffice.
      "the pod is bigger on the inside than the outside;" - The phrase "bigger on the inside than the outside" is grammatically correct but can be clarified for parallel structure.
      "the scenario just makes no sense and is poorly explained." - This is mostly correct but could be more concise.

    This was good, thank you for making it, I realise many comments here are from people who cannot fathom the concepts of Science-Fiction, nor it seems have they seen the new Spacesuits which are being used by SpaceX which do indeed resemble the suit shown here.
    nor can they conceptualise the idea of the Artemis system searching for a certain level of life forms, rather than scanning the entire planet for ALL forms of life.
    and well duh if the planets air is breathable, then something has to make it, ie plants that is how it works...
    as for the oxygen and fuel in the craft, Oxygen is not "Air"
    Oxygen in the concentration is flammable, "Air" as such is not.

    I have an idea for a scenario; people go to sleep every night and wake up to different universes every morning. The universe they wake up to is determined by the good or bad things they did the day before they went to sleep. So if they did good, they wake up to a good universe, if they did bad, they wake up to a bad universe.

    Cool! Motorcycle leathers and helmets get recycled for future space travel

    • @kredgen
      @kredgen 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Making realistic space suits is more complicated than people think. The high budget sci-fi films have millions of dollars for their production design. The racing suits were an affordable compromise (they were still $1000 each). They make the look and feel of the film more unique. Costume shop/Amazon off the shelf ones look like kids costume and were all unusable. The suits themselves was still about a month process, even if they are just motorcycle leathers

      @prophetzarquon 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A cheap option that can look really good on camera with a few accessories added, are paper cleansuits. They're made to be disposable, so they're pretty freaking cheap, but the _look_ is halfway to a spacesuit already & a few metal rings etc can sell it surprisingly readily. There's a few varieties, so you might need to shop around to find one that looks right. Hope this helps!

    • @kredgen
      @kredgen 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@prophetzarquon we did actually do some camera tests with this option. It didn't look the way we wanted it. It felt a bit cheap and like the astronauts were cleaning up a crime scene.

    What's wonderful about these types of films is that they start off "marginal" and then just keep getting progressively worse and worse.
    Always make me think that the goal was to make a comedy rather than " a thought provoking thriller"

    Ill be honest, I really didn't find this compelling. The production was excellent, but the script... Why would anyone empathize with a guy who has gigantic parasitic worms ?
    It just seemed to me that the protagonist wasn't very smart to be frank
    Its only obvious that there is an invasive species there and any attempts at leaving are a death sentence to life on Earth so... I don't get the drama.
    I think frankly a more existencial and introspective view of a marooned hero could have made for a very interesting experience. He could have been tested and toyed with. Ultimately you would have an extinction bound intelligent species and a self sacrificing protagonist.
    Heck maybe... They could be competing for survival on a vessel of a third species and have that play out. Like is the thrid species a way out or their new threat, was the worm misinterpreted and closer to Star Treks Krill (just ugly)?
    Is there something else at play ?
    But this didn't really go beyond the initial premise. It was a bit too on the nose. Id like something closer to the Dimension X serials, or Twilight Zone with this framework.
    Additionally, his vocabulary seemed limited for an astronaut. Is space travel much more easily accessible in this future? Being more of a working man than a scientist? Why? What other elements support this?
    Anyway, I don't mean to discourage the creatives this is just honest though critical feedback because if all we hear is what we want we never really get challenged. Also, they can dismiss it as a random guy on the internet kinda thing...
