FYI, the lines on a 3X5 card are exactly 1/4” apart. I carry extra cards for students. Put your needle in a line, line up with edge of foot , lower foot and check the setting.
You have no idea how your thoughtful way of showing us how to master the dreaded 1/4" seam allowance. I believe all of your viewers are enamored to your specific way of tutoring all the ways to make our quilting easier.🇨🇦
My late auntie was a tailor, as were her parents, and one thing my mom & I picked up from them is that they were very selective about what measuring tools they introduced to their workspace and each single one of them needed to be tested for consistency with the others. They had one 'benchmark' measuring tape for reference. It has not occurred to me to test my sewing machine plate. Thank you for this video. All the best!
Totally appreciate your taking the time at a very patient-rate. I will definite re-attempt this…even after 40+ years of ma chine piecing! Thanks sew much! 🎉
I have never been accurate on anything but 5/8, cause i made my clothes for so many yrs. Finalky got a 1/4❤❤" ❤foot, havrnt tried it yet. I just ordered that 1/4 tape that goes on my machine. Lets pray that works for these 78 yr old eyes!
Just found your site. I am new at sewing. I have been watching many videos. You are a wonderful teacher, one of the best I have seen. Keep up the good work. From a retired teacher!
You're a great teacher! Can't wait to see more videos!! My dad taught me the importance of 1/4" seam before he passed and I poopoohed it. I wish I had paid a bit more attention. You've inspired me to perfect the 1/4" seam. 😊
Thank you. I’ll save this video. I haven’t started quilting yet. I order my layer cakes and thread. Should be coming in this week. But I had no idea to measure my machine for 1/4 seam the way you should use I do have that magnet but never measured to make sue. I’m so glad I watched this video before I started quilting my first ever. Thank you
Just found your video and I want to thank you for explaining the quarter inch seams. I'm new to quilting and this was so helpful. Your explanations were clear and understandable. I also appreciated the use of different tools. I will be binge watching your videos for more helpful tips.
I am so glad I found you and your site. I've never measured my blocks before like you instructed. Having your information I feel more confident in my sewing. I am so happy and thankful to have found your site. Please keep the information coming.
Thank you for a vey well explained and thorough demonstration. Your camera views are excellent. Your voice is perfect for the verbal explanation and you know how to zoom in with camera for details that need to be seen. WELL DONE!!!
I cannot wait to continue my little beginner quilt tomorrow by checking my quarter inch seam allowance. I will definitely be using the 1/4 inch line on my ruler. I think I may have a lot seam picking to do on the pieces I’ve already sewn together. This has been an excellent instruction. Thank you
If you have a Pfaff you can also get a 1/4 seam foot. The foot has small bar on the side that guides the fabric like similar to the way the magnetic seam guide works.
Your videos came across my youtube feed and sadly i almost scrolled past them and something told me to watch and im soooo glad i did! I just subscribed to your channel after watching a few of your videos . I cant seem to sew a quarter inch seem to save my life or bind a quilt very well and your videos have been amazing. You instructions are clear and understandable and make it possible for me to keep trying! Thank you so very much. Your an excellent teacher. Blessings from Texas.
I just found your channel and I am so amazed! After watching one video I hit the subscribe button! Not only are you great at explaining but I love that you zoom in so we can really SEE what you are saying. Love it!!❤️ keep sharing.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so very much for this video! 😍 I feel like I now have a PERSONAL QUILTING INSTRUCTOR!! Bless you and your dedication to instructing the masses!
Thank you for a great tutorial. I have the stripe tape and the metal magnet but did not know how to use them correctly, so now I feel confident about the 1/4" seam.
Me too. I am a new quilter. By far you have the best videos. You instructions are crystal clear, step by step..that is how I learn best. I am so happy that I found you!
cleared up a lot of issues for me, I struggle with the quarter inch seam. I am a visual learner and this video helped me a lot. thank you from the bottom of my well used seam ripper.
There's a needle gauge that has holes in it to set the perfect seam you need for a project from 1/8" to 1.5". One is called "Ideal needle gauge", and even has a scant 1/4", the other is by Dritz and I'm sure there is more. There's a hole in the template plastic that you can put your unthreaded needle into and then mark the edge however you prefer. Makes lining up the proper edge super simple. I lay about 6-7 layers of painters tape cut off a 1" roll. When it doesn't stick great anymore I just score the corner with a pin, remove the bottom piece of tape and it's brand new again. When I'm not using it, I stick it to my machine someplace. Never leaves a residue and is always handy. I've even used a fine marker so I know where to put the painters tape or to use without the painters tape, depending on the job. The marker comes off with rubbing alcohol. Works for me
Thank you for making this video. Although I’ve been sewing on the same machine for a long time, I recently received a very old Bernina, which did not have a quarter inch foot. Your video really helped me zero in on where my needle and my presser foot need to be. Thank you so much for making the video.
You are very welcome! And you make a great point, every machine is different and you have to set yourself up for success! Sounds like you are on your way! Enjoy your "new" Bernina!
Thank you, this morning I did several things to try and get the 1/4 in seam. You are right it can be a struggle. Next time I will try your idea's. I already feel more confident. Thanks so much.
I am a beginner Quilter and I totally loved your video. I did not realize how important it was to make sure all the blocks matched and why. I definitely will look for you other video. It was a pleasure listening to your voice.
Great video. The information and screen shots demonstrate the information quite well. I have been sewing for most of my life and quilting about half. This is the best tutorial I have seen with products to assist quilters with quarter inch and scant quarter inch seams.
I finally know how measure exactly the 1/4 seam and blocks. I was never sure with a ruler if the marks went exactly on the seam line or on the fabric edge, or just off. Now I KNOW to use the seams and fabric edge in your measurement.
Thank you so much for showing me this! I know how important seam allowance is (I have made a few projects where this has unfortunately been an issue😢) and mine is getting better the more I sew, but the tips you shared (some of which I knew) will help me not only improve my allowances, but be able to check them after I have completed a few! Thank you again!
I absolutely love ❤❤❤ your teaching! I am sooo new to this quilting and sewing and you are making it easier for me to learn the simple tricks to making a nice heirlooms! Thank you!😊
Thanks so much for this well explained video. This is the problem that I have is that my machine does not have a true 1/4 inch seam. So now I know how to adjust my seam. Thank you. You’re a terrific teacher.
Great video! One thing I consider when I'm learning something is that when someone shows me the correct way - that's super great. However, I would like to see how you determine the wrong way and what you do about it. You could probably very easily (purposely) sew the seam incorrectly without anyone noticing. Then you would show us what the incorrect result looks like, the cause and how you fix it. Perfection is great but it is imperfection that I can sometimes learn best from. Thanks!
NEW to this channel👍🏽🤗I’m not a quilter YET😊 however this was extremely helpful for sewing I have the magnet and I haven’t been confident in using it not for sure I will be THANKS
Great tip because that’s what I have and refer to in my video! But I like to sew with a scant 1/4” so the seam guide helps. Also, I made this video for anyone using any machine 😍 thanks again!
I have quilted for many years but this is the 1st answer to the 1/4 inch mystery. I am a Juki owner and use the magnetic feature but now I know how to use that feature to get that illusive seam allowance. Thanks so much for explaining it so clearly!

Thanks for this and your clear instructions. I use a cut down ruler from a plastic binder to create a ledge and stick it on with masking tape.
Thank you for demonstrating how to attach the Diagonal Seam Tape - that is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I am a beginner Quilter and I totally loved your video. I did not realize how important it was to make sure all the blocks matched and why. I definitely will look for you other video. It was a pleasure listening to your voice.
You are so welcome! Thanks for the kind words!!
That tshirt is so pretty on you. I am one of the people who have trouble with quarter inch seams. Thank you very much this video.
Aww thanks Alison! Best suggestion, having a guide is key. Then you’ll get used to working with it and you’ll have it mastered!
Great video. The information and screen shots demonstrate the information quite well. I have been sewing for most of my life and quilting about half. This is the best tutorial I have seen with products to assist quilters with quarter inch and scant quarter inch seams.
So nice of you to say! Thanks for watching!
I finally know how measure exactly the 1/4 seam and blocks. I was never sure with a ruler if the marks went exactly on the seam line or on the fabric edge, or just off. Now I KNOW to use the seams and fabric edge in your measurement.
So happy you had a lightbulb moment!! Let me know how it works for you!!

I am new to sewing and quilting. This is an excellent video on the 1/4" seam allowance. Simple and to the point.
Glad it was helpful!
I agree that making 1/4 inch seams is so important. I also think finger pressing afterwards helps.
That's a great point! Finger pressing does help too! Great point!
Oh my gosh! You are the teacher I have needed. Thank you thank you.
Susan Habeler
Thank you so much! Glad you’re here!!
Thank you so much. I am brand new to quilting and I am working on my 2nd quilt. That 1/4” is a killer. Gonna keep practicing. Thank you again 😊

Thanks so much for this well explained video. This is the problem that I have is that my machine does not have a true 1/4 inch seam. So now I know how to adjust my seam. Thank you. You’re a terrific teacher.

This was great! I have a Juki also. Thank you!
Very helpful. I'm new to quilting and was not aware of how important it is.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much. 1/4" seam is hard for me, so I will be practicing with your suggestions. You are a good teacher.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so very much
Thanks for watching!!
Want to get into quilting cutting had me off but after watching you i am feeling more enthusiastic you are clear too thankyou
Thanks!
Great point!!! Thanks for the tip!!
Great and important lesson. I’m going to try them. 😊
Please do! Thanks!!
NEW to this channel👍🏽🤗I’m not a quilter YET😊 however this was extremely helpful for sewing I have the magnet and I haven’t been confident in using it not for sure I will be THANKS
That’s awesome! Love the magnetic guide! And start quilting, you won’t be sorry!!
Thank you for these videos. I’m just learning and bought a new machine.
Great video! Another way to get a quarter inch seam is to order the Juki 1/4” foot with the guide on it. You may want to try one
Great tip because that’s what I have and refer to in my video! But I like to sew with a scant 1/4” so the seam guide helps. Also, I made this video for anyone using any machine 😍 thanks again!
I really like your accuracy and it helps me to really check my work! Thank you!
That’s great to hear! Thanks for watching!
I have quilted for many years but this is the 1st answer to the 1/4 inch mystery. I am a Juki owner and use the magnetic feature but now I know how to use that feature to get that illusive seam allowance. Thanks so much for explaining it so clearly!
You are so welcome!! The magnetic guide is my fav!!!
Think it was great explained beautiful ,now rushing just did a beautiful job I’m over the moon

I use a seam guide from quilt section at joanns. It has a hole on the 1/4 inch for you to put your needle through similar to the ruler you used. There are also other seams, 1/2 inch , 5/8 etc. great tutorial.
I’ve seen those! Good to know that it helps!
