    I once heard a non-native English speaker say that they used to think that f**k was just a word people said to emphasize something and they didn't understand that it had a meaning on its own because of how people would use it all the time in movies/TV. It wasn't till they lived in America for a while that they got corrected on that. I think that's how some of these happen.

    • @Llortnerof
      @Llortnerof 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Nah, it's mostly that things get translated by somebody using a (probably not very good) dictionary who doesn't speak the language and just picks a translation at random. Which gets... odd, when it comes to idioms and euphemisms. Think about it, what would most people understand when you say you just "did" your significant other? Problem is, they then use this translation for everything.
      That's also why this is particularly common in languages that work very differently from the original, like with Chinese and English.

      @@Llortnerof You do a lot of traveling or are you just guessing? I happen to know a big problem in Japan is they teach English in there k-12 system but there English curriculum is universal recognized to be broken and does not focus on the spoken language but instead teaches to these bizarre standardized test that don't really correlate to actual English knowledge. So the problem is the Japanese school system produces thousands of highly educated Japanese businesses men and women who think they can speak English when they can't. So the Engaleshu is strong in Japan.

    There are a 2 pretty similar words in russian: *тесть* and *тесто*
    *Тесть* means "father-in-law", and *тесто* means dough.
    Sometimes these words can be written completely similar to each other (like "*в тесте*" - means "in dough" and also can be translated as "in father-in-law")

    1:29 There's a few good linguistics articles about this. Apparently the Chinese text is a little bit unusual to begin with, and whoever then translated it to English got confused by the use of simplified Chinese instead of traditional (simplified Chinese is used in mainland china, while traditional is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In simplified Chinese, the same character can mean both "empress/queen" and "after", but in traditional that character only means "empress". "Dry" and "do (fuck)" also were likewise combined into a single character.

    • @BeckyNosferatu
      @BeckyNosferatu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I honestly guessed it was just literal translation, and those words mean something else in their language. But knowing that it's multiple meanings, makes even more sense.

    • @adamb89
      @adamb89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@BeckyNosferatu Oh it gets even worse if someone tries translating pinyin (Chinese written with western alphabet) and the diacritics are missing. Each word can have multiple different meanings depending on the tone used when saying it. And in the absence of context, sometimes you just have to guess and hope for the best. As an example say you saw the English word "ruler". In the absence of context, you would just have to guess whether it's supposed to be a tool to measure length, or whether it means a political leader.

    • @rfmerrill
      @rfmerrill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@mumujibirb Hm, I don't think it's that simple. In trad chinese, "dry" is 乾 and "fuck" is 幹, but in simplified both of those are 干. 干 would not translate as "fuck" in a trad chinese translator. They also got "drying" right once but got it wrong some other times. It definitely does seem like it could be machine translation, but it could also be someone just using a chinese-english dictionary who doesn't know what the english words mean.

    3:44 Frew is a child prodigy and Greg's partner in the Homework Buddies Program. He appears in Old School. As Greg mentions, he is very intelligent, and he is the type of kid who would read college textbooks and scientific journals for entertainment. Greg often leaves his homework to him, but this makes him end up in harder classes. Frew is a fast worker and can get many pages of homework done in 15 minutes. Frew is forced to wake up every morning at 5 A.M. to study and cannot do normal things like play laser tag because his parents say it is "a waste of time". It is possible that he could have been making up a sob story as he appears to not mind his work. As it is shown as before, he was Greg's, Homework Buddy. When he and Greg met, he realized he is smart and could read scientific journals and college textbooks. Greg then suggests doing his homework for him, only to get in harder classes and be rewarded, like going to the Old-Timey Ice Cream Parlour. Frew also finishes work very fast, like how it took Greg hours to finish his work, but with Frew's intelligence, Frew got done with it in 15 minutes. Greg then meets up with Frew later on in the book, when the town was cleaning the park, Greg decided to go with him, along with Frew and Billy last. The trio manages to outrun the Girl Scouts, but they got caught when he saw Susan's car and the Girl Scout's cars. They then scolded the trio, so then Frew explains the story, and he burst into tears. To get himself out, Greg manages to pass the blame to Billy, probably the fact that Billy got caught stealing a pack of sour gummy worms. He was never seen or mentioned again in the book.

    If someone is wondering where the translation errors from Russian into English came from, I will explain to you.
    1) 3:17 Father-in-law translates into russian like "Тесть", and the dough itself is translated into Russian as "Тесто".
    Apparently someone who really doesn't know English wrote "Тесть" instead of "Тесто" in Google translator, because "о" is next to "ь" on the keyboard.
    2) 7:59 "Убрать (УБРАТЬ)" in Russian is translated into English as "Clear" and "Remove".
    3) 9:04 "Хрен" is not a swear word in itself,
    in Russia it's just one of the nasty plants, but the phrase "Хрен тебе" will already be translated as "**** you (Sorry for censorship, I just don't know if my comment will be displayed)"
    4) 10:13 Same as 3.
    If you have questions, you can ask.
