Funny intro. As an Aussie love Brit bg vids much more than US, Canadian - our humour more in synch! NPI, SUSD and Actualol great vids. Friday my best solo challenge. Just got cartographers which I enjoyed with my family - looking forward to trying solo : )
Oh my gosh Johnny. That was too much. Thank you for that intro. My eyes are just as dry as they were before. Anyways, I have to go wash my face.. for, skincare reasons.
Being a single mum living in rural France makes it hard to get to games night so I play a lot of solo games. Sprawlopolis from ButtonShy Games is probably my favourite, ButtonShy sell lots of great solo or solo playable games and I am quickly building a sizeable collection. Their sister site pnparcade.com has lots of great games including many one page roll n' writes too. I also love Assembly from UK indie company Wren Games, Maquis from SideRoom Games and recently received Squire for Hire and Crystallo which I backed on Kickstarter and really enjoy..
This is great, I hate Valentine's Day and I was wondering about solo games since I've been sick on and off for the last few weeks. And painting miniatures only gets me so far. Love you guys.
I’ve had a tough few days, and Valentine’s Day is awfully lonely to navigate on your own. But this video made me soooo happy! Thank you Johnny, this is exactly what I needed 💜
I own One Deck Dungeon, and second that it's great solo fun! I also like Tiny Epic Galaxies and Hero Realms Campaign play for solo options. As a single mother of youngsters I don't always get in game time with others so I'm always on the lookout for something fun to play solo.
There is also the Oniverse games. Sylvion, Castellion, etc, there are quite a few, though Onirim is the flagship of the series and I think the best to begin with. Unlike a lot of games which tend to tack on a single player when their mechanics are flexible enough to accommodate it, the Oniverse is pretty much designed to be single player (and two player cooperative.)
These are a few games I can play solo because they are too fun to even feel discouraged when I can't get a group together. Let's start with the smaller ones. Microbrew, by One Free Elephant, is a game in a tinbox about making beer. It's a worker placement designed to be for 2 players in which you push your opponent from places and they get to play that guy back, but a solo mode in which you play against an AI is included. And it's great fun. Then I have Burgle Bros by Tim Fowers. A game about a group of thieves breaking into the offices of a firm, stealing a safebox in each of its three floors, and getting out by the roof. Each level has a security guard making rounds around the floor, but every time a safebox is opened, or the patrol deck is reshuffled, their movement increases, making it a race against time in a building full of lasers, thermal detection, and metal scanners. Then comes Underwater cities by Vladimír Suchý, it's a brilliant game playable from 1-4 players about building your own underwater cities, it uses a clever mechanic, mixing both worker placement and card play, in which if you play a card of the corresponding color you not only get the action where the worker is, but also the action described on the card, which can be anything from instant, passive, actionables, or end game points. I'll skip my days playing Arkham Horror 2nd edition, since I stopped when I bought Arkham Horror LCG. Much better choice to lose myself in the investigations. And talking about investigations, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. While more fun playing with somebody else to bounce ideas off, the game is basically a Choose Your Own Adventure book in which you follow clues to find the criminal. It's perfect to play solo. I'm going to end the post by mentioning 2 more games. Mantic's Hellboy The Boardgame, in which you can have a team up to 4 investigators following a case for the BPRD, mixing dungeoncrawler with investigative scenarios. I got the kickstarter edition and has been playing it with the ton of characters it has, including regular human agents like Clark and Kate Corrigan. And finally Awaken Realms' Nemesis. This game puts you right into a movie like Alien or Solaris, in which a group of aliens has been wrecking havoc around the ship, killing your colleagues even before you wake up from cryosleep. It's a very cinematic game in which tension and fear runs around while you try to keep the ship functioning enough to get you to earth, or at least until the escape pods are activated and you can get out.
Thanks for posting this list. How's the replay value on the Sherlock Holmes games? We have a few at the bookstore where I work and I've been thinking of picking them up. My budget for games isn't big, so when I pick a game I tend towards the ones I can get a lot out of until I can afford more games.
@@madalice5134 Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective are 10 cases. But each of them are like a riddle, once solved you can't "unsolve" it. Holmes shares his discoveries at the end of the case, and you compare your investigation with his to rate how good you did. So 0 replayability. But it's not a legacy game, so you can resell it, or buy it with a group of friends and split the costs.
Let me add though, there are a lot of free fanmade cases online. So, while each case doesn't have any replayability, you can always find online more cases to play.
Sub Terra is a fantastic game, I enjoyed playing it on my own as much as in a team. You just control more characters in your own. The first time you play it, there is a steep learning curve but it has so much replay value. Other ones worth mentioning if you like big sized games - Dark Souls and Fallout
I'm glad you included a roll'n'write in Ganz Shon, but if also like to offer up On Tour. I love how easy it is to learn, and the recently released app is a fantastic way to pass five minutes anywhere. Great fun.
Awww, this is lovely! Valentines Day is the most trash holiday, nothing screams romance like being obliged to buy people things. I haven't done a lot of solo play boardgames, but I did play a lot of the digital adaptation of Freitag on my phone, which is like a Robinson Crusoe deck builder thing. Pretty fun. :)
I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day prepping for a D&D session the day. I love running our campaign and it’s thanks in part to Johnny and the oxventure that I decided to do it in the first place
I want Johnny's awesome self esteem boosts as ringtones, or just a download I can play on a loop when I'm having a tough day. I was really hoping you guys qould cover solo games soon and I really hope I get to try all of these out. I already have the Arkham horror lcg core game, but I haven't really had time to really dig into the game. Thanks for the post and the positivity. This was a great video to watch at the end of a long day. ❤
Not an obscure game at all but one reason I love the Pandemic series is that it’s also very entertaining to play solo by controlling multiple characters yourself. I often play the dice-based Pandemic: The Cure by myself because of its gamble-ish mechanics (like One Deck Dungeon); or Pandemic Iberia with its increased difficulty of no cures and stronger diseases. BTW, I think you forgot to mention that One Deck Dungeon also has a co-op two player mode in case you actually find another special someone to play with :)
Cartographers, Lord of the Rings Card game, The City of Kings, Circle the Wagons (w/ Cowboy exp), or other Button Shy games, and Legendary (any will do).
Pandemic is hands down one of my favorite single player experiences..i have on many occasions left it out for weeks on end, periodically shuffling the deck and giving it a quick go. you think being the sole decision maker would put you at an advantage but the random deck nature and sheer brutality of escalation make it a brilliant puzzle with absolutely no guarantee of success.
for real tho. was feeling really trash about myself, and Johnny saying all that made my day and I'm absolutely not crying right now, its just raining... inside... shut up.
I really like the solitaire mode of Marvel Legendary. Cooperative deckbuilders tend to make way for one player leading the group anyway... So an effective single-player mode is appreciated.
Leaving Earth by The Luminaris Group is an amazing single player game which simulates the space race form 1956 to 1976. I know, it sounds terrible but my gosh it's amazing.
Thank you, you awesome people. Could I ask that you consider a video for the other extreme please - games playable by eight or more people ? Sadly, 7 Wonders is up to 7 players, or I'd suggest it. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is amazing and plays up to 14 with the expansion. It's social deduction, but it's more like what Clue should've been. One I haven't played that looks amazing for 8 players is Captain Sonar. Check out SU&SD's review. Also haven't played them but what about those roll-and-write games like Welcome To... and On Tour, where you're rolling/flipping one thing and everyone has their own board and adds to it? That might be ideal for you. My other suggestion isn't out yet, but tons of people bootleg it (okay with the devs if you're not profiting) or officially host it: Blood on the Clocktower. Spend your precious lifepoints. Fight a random big boss pirate at the end of the game. It's in a nice small box and the game's only like $15 or $20. Easily my favorite solo game and it's only solo. The D&D Adventure Boardgames are a lot of fun solo, even if they only include 1 solo adventure each. You can always just flip cards and see how far into the dungeon you get.
You guys really need to add some sponsored links to Amazon in the description or something. Just bought one of the recommendations. You should get a kickback.
No need to lie to me. I know I will never be good enough for anyone's love. But it is what it is. I just forget that one day exists immediately after it is mentioned, because who needs companionship anyway. This got too real for a boardgame video... interesting suggestions! I should try some.
Can Johnny record a sat-nav voice over? Driving would be a lot less stressful if it was him telling me: 'Don't worry schweetie, just turn around and you won't miss the turn this time.' Then randomly just telling me i'm fierce or a stunner. Please?
On the "Ganz schön clever-Fox": The fox (especial in German fairy tales) is depicted as a sly animal. If somebody does a very sly or clever thing, Germans often say "Du Fuchs!" A third person might add to that "Bist zwar nicht so schlau, stinkst aber wie einer" (Not as smart, but smells/stinks like one), as humorous turn of the conversation. :)
Not even a full minute in and my self esteem has increased ten fold. Thank you Johnny, you beautiful person.
As a single person, this is rather appreciated.
