    Airless sprayers work great if you don't have a compressor: amzn.to/2f1RRKk
    If you do have a compressor you need a gun with a large spray tip. This has a 1.8mm amzn.to/2eXUKZg
    OLD used motor oil mixed with 25-50% thinner( diesel, paint thinner, mineral spirits, etc) for spraying. Or just straight for hand applying.
    FAQ
    Smell: It smells like oil for a day or two in passing. Which isn't strong or offensive odor to the majority of people.
    Durability: I find it last longer than commercial translucent outdoor stains due the high oil content.
    Protects: Insects and other animals leave it alone.
    Flammable: FAR less than any oil based stain you would buy from the Home Improvement store:
    So many people have asked about the flammability and how toxic it is. Short answer is: it is less toxic and far less flammable than Oil based stains you would buy from any Home Improvement or Paint store. Read the msds yourself.

      Yep farmers have been doing this for years with great results. You do have some control over color not alot as long as you like different shades of burnt brown or shades of brown red. You can mix used automatic transmission fluid and offroad diesel for a more red stain and burnt motor oil to the previous to give it a brown red color. My neighbor could mix it so you could spray #2 pine and make it look like cedar lol(except for wood grain)

    I recommend just using a paintbrush to apply it. Its slower but a lot less contaminating. You don't have to worry about oil particles harming you, your plants or neighbors property.

My b/f just built me a little trailer yesterday to pull behind my lawn tractor and I was trying to think of how I could stain it as cheaply as possible and he said I could use the used oil he had in the shed. Old automotive parts factories actually had floors of wood cut and put together like a puzzle. They used the pieces of wood cut so the grain actually went top to bottom vertically, so the pieces were relatively thin cuts. They used this to absorb the oil that drips onto the floor. Not many know this and does sound strange nowadays.

    My brother had a dog and her name was Missy. I would always go to his house in the summer just to watch her get excited when I uttered a single phrase/question to her, "Wanna Play with the Hose?"...she would get so excited and run to where the hose was. You could play with her for hours until she was completely exhausted. *You playing with Ginger reminded me of that. Missy passed away this past year so I can't do it with her anymore but the memories will last a lifetime.*

    You have confirmed my suspicions... great video.
    I as a bit concerned seeing the oil over scary around the truck, then blowing over the fence when he was spaying it there. I was thinking lower pressure on the compressor or a pump sprayer... like a weed killer sprayer maybe? or just roll it on.
    used a 30/70 mix of red diesel and old oil yesterday to treat bottom of pine posts going into dirt , and was inspired to google the idea of just using it as a stain... it looks exactly the same color as my post/beam garage... I paid $100/ 5gal for that stain. My concern was the smell, who wants post that gives off a oil/diesel aroma? But this morning when I did my smell test, i could hardly smell the diesel, actually easier on the noise than the smell of stain when applying. I wouldn't spray int on though, roll it or brush it; saves on the mix and no over spray.

My father grandfather always used motor oil to stain the fence. To this day my grandparents fence is still up and he used it for a worm bed for fishing worms. I was never apart of the mixing process 😂 just the labor as applying it 😆😆😆. Cheap summer labor. Boy I miss him.

      Mike Brink Yeah, but there is a difference because used motor oil has been through an engine and been exposed to heat, engine metals, and combustion gases which causes it to become chemically altered, and lotsa new, nasty compounds form in the oil. It's kinda like what happens with tobacco when you burn it. The burning creates a ton of compounds that weren't there before.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It needs to be respected for sure. But if the media did stories on how many power tools chop off fingers, hands, put out eyes we'd ban them all. They put more people's lives in misery than Creosote, Motor oil, or even Lead. These are invaluable tools that need to be respected but not feared. If I was painting fences for a living and was exposed to it daily, I would wear a hazmat suit.

    The old wooden Mississippi shrimp boats had a lot on common with what you are saying. Before construction, the wood was placed in 3 separate stacks, based on it's location in the logs. The best wood was for the decks and cabin, the next best was for the frames, and the worst wood was used on the bottom. Bottom wood was in salt water or had salt added, and had oil from the engine all over everything, so it was the least likely to rot. The nails rotted. Keels were made of long leaf pine by hand, and were left untreated. Some are now over 100 years old. Most rot in these boats always was at the deck / rib junction from the leakage of fresh water around the "garboard plank".

    The next time was on one of your videos, (Shed). I have used this on a boat trailer that I converted. Looked really good & held up great. This a good way to recycle a waste product that when applied using the same caution as with commercial product is as safe or dangerous.

    Is this what you do before applying lacquer?

    Thanks for this fantastic bit of information. Was wondering if it is possible to paint over the wood covered in used engine oil?

  • @57WillysCJ
    @57WillysCJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great point. Truthfully you buy a gallon of cheap oil, thin with mineral spirits, add oil paint of the color you want to tint and you have an oil stain. Go to one of those places that people drop off left over paint and see if you can get the tint cheaper.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea. They do sell tints that are super concentrated or maybe you could sweet talk the person behind the counter to give a squirt of each color tint into small sample cans.

    My granddad used the same stuff too. It also works in barn stalls to stop horses from chewing up the wood. But I am willing to say you probably made your neighbors upset spraying that all over the fence!! Hah!

    You can choose your color. I use charcoal dust for a dark stain and red ocre for a reddish stain.

      I don't see why not. I try to keep all the linseed oil out of my shop though, do to it's spontaneous combustion with rags.

    Great idea :-D, that oil will stop water getting into the wood, never go bad :-D
    Ive used linseed oil for small wooden signs that sit outside, keeps them water free :-D.
    i accidentally spilt some corn oil on a patch of weeds between paving slabs, i didnt think anything about it at the time, the weeds went dark and died, the patch stayed clear for 3 months.
    I had to think why the weeds had gone black, finally i remembered the spill, mad!!.

      Pee does the same kills grass/weeds as well as any "monsanto" product and it's better for the environment. Don't complain if the neighbors find you awkward for killing weeds that way. LOL :-)

    Man, I've watched 3 of your videos and love your videos. I've watched one on snow blowers, one on rebuilding my nicad battery pack, and now this one on staining with motor oil. You seem to have the knowledge of like my old next door neighbor, who was a retired farmer in his 70's. I swear, that man knew a little bit about everything, and you seem to be like that. Much respect to you sir! Enjoy your videos and have subscribed.

    Also if you stain it the regular way and you scratch it it's really noticeable. But if you stain the wood with oil it penetrates past the surface so if you scratch it it won't be as noisilable

    Hi Friends, I am in need of some advice from an old pro. I am wanting to make my own deck and fence stain. I hear that people take a clear recycled oil from bulk dealers and mix with a homemade stain concentrate. 1 part concentrate to 4 parts of the clear oil. I cant seem to find a formula of ingredients for the concentrate. Thanks for your help.

      @jakebredthauer5100 permanent is a plus. And stinky depends on one's definition and what they are into. Damage.. well. old rifles to modern "sportification" is damaging in my opinion. I'll obviously.run tests before I do it on anything important.
