Painting My Garden Fence with Brand New Motor Oil - The Results

  • There are lots of videos on TH-cam where people paint their fence with used motor oil. The problem with used motor oil is that it's normally black in colour, which doesn't give a particularly great aesthetic look to your fence.
    So, can you paint your fence with brand-new motor oil? I decided to give this a go, and the results are excellent. As you can see from the video, it colours the wood a lovely golden brown colour and also brings out the grain.
    The oil I used was: Valvotech GX-1 5W/30 Semi-Synthetic and MANNO 10W/40 Semi-Synthetic engine oil. These 5 L oils cost between £13 and £15 at the time on ebay, but the price will vary.
    Tips for applying motor oil to your fence:
    Apply between mid spring and mid autumn when the weather is better.
    Only apply on a completely dry fence.
    The fence should also be as clean as possible, i.e., no mud, et cetera.
    You want at least 2 to 3 days of dry weather after applying it. So check the weather forecast.
    Don't apply it if you have a pond in your garden or the neighbours, as a small amount of oil will wash off over time and possibly poison the pond.
    If you're painting a fence that is next to grass or plants, cover them up as the oil will kill them if it drips. Your plants will be fine after the oil has dried into the wood.
    The oil can take up to 2 to 3 weeks to become fully touch dry, so be careful you don't get it on your clothes by brushing up against a fence or gate.
    As with any toxic product, be sensible, and try not to get it on anything other than the fence.

    This was my plan for our newly installed fence. Glad to see I'm not the only who thought this was a good idea 👍

    I just did half of my fence with brand new engine oil, and it looks great at the same time it will protect my panels for a long time.

    This is genius! I’ve been looking all weekend for fence paint/oils etc. But this looks like the best colour result and cheap! Does it smell weeks afterwards still, or if the sun hits it?

    I have just painted my fence with used motor oil. Actually the fence is 8 years old and was originally painted with a water-based stain that washes out months! Will see how the oil fares.

    Looks Great! Did it fully dry as oil usually doesn’t? Did it bleed through the opposite side?

    I do my own oil changes. I drained, refilled and used the vehicle for a week then drained again so basically used it as a flush. I then used it on my fences, although the oil looked black in the drain tub it was actually clean so used it on my new fences they look just like yours and my engine benefited

      Yeah, providing the vehicle isn't old or high mileage, the oil shouldn't be to discoloured to use on fence panels.

    I wonder if unused motor oil is as good as used motor oil as a preservative. I certainly prefer the appearance after using unused oil.

      It will go more of a honey brown colour over the months. Still looks good nearly 2 years on.

      I hear the black look lasts 25 years. Idk how long brand new oil lasts

    Hey it looks great! Can you apply the motor oil to regular wood thats meant for indoor application but can be now used outdoors? Or do you still have to use pressure treated lumber and then treat with oil to use oudoors? Cheers!

    • @subterraneansecret
      @subterraneansecret  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, absolutely. However, it may depend on the wood. In my experience, soft woods such as pine absorb the oil better than hardwoods such as oak.

    Using used oil mixed with diesel or kerosene is going to produce basically the same coloring, but it will seep into the wood better. Which is an important difference. The mix makes the wood toxic to the stuff that rots the wood. I made a gate for my mother out of timber I felled on her property. I painted it with 2 or 3 heavy coats of the oil/diesel mix. She was supposed to recoat it a year later which she never did. It's now been 11 years and the gate looks weathered, but is otherwise still in good condition. Meanwhile pressure treated decking I put in the same year at my home rotted and needed replacing 2 years ago.

    in case you are building a fence, make some sort of tray and soak the boards in oil for 5 mins, that way it get into all the sides. If you stain it after mounting you are missing the sides and the bottoms

      Good idea, but you'll need your neighbours permission if you share a fence with them.

    Just searching stain with new motor oil...came onto your video.
    Propably a low viscosity oil would be better (10w).

    Looks good and it will stop the weather drying and splitting the wood, it’s as good or better for the environment than say using paint, I’ve tried all sorts of preservers/paints over the years what I found was treat wood fences with new or used motor oil and treat bottoms of posts with ethylene glycol or eg antifreeze no probs to the environment and lasts forever 👍👍

    • @Michael-iw3qq
      @Michael-iw3qq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why antifreeze on the post bottoms? Why not just oil/diesel 50/50 mix?

      Used diesel oil? The used diesel oil is BLACK.
      Also worth mentioning is that tints are available from paint stores. I think in powder form. There’s even TH-cam videos about making tinted stains for fencing at home. fwiw

    • @subterraneansecret
      @subterraneansecret  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not very strong, at all. But I guess it depends on the brand of oil. But generally speaking, it should disappear within a week or two.

    Do you clean before using the oil?

  • @williamdias4473
    @williamdias4473 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I.
    Painted my fence with fifty-fifty used Motorola and diesel. And it came out looking great. My neighbors love it. The wood is Cedar. Maybe that makes a difference, but the other point is. That used motor oil cost Nothing new motor oil cost about 8 to $10. A quart 4 quarts to a gallon close to $40. A gallon almost as much as the oil stain paint. The point is, you, save money with used and I prefer the look better.

      Definitely worth doing if you change your own oil and don't mind a black colour.

      Actually.
      My fence doesn't look black. It looks walnut really looks sharp. Just sayand that's what the diesel mixed. Does it lightens up the black?
