I replayed Dragon's Dogma 2 recently & so I decided to make this little "critique-esqe" video on my full thoughts on the game and the future of the franchise. Also, I realized that i forgot to mention the performance. Yes, it was really bad at launch - especially in the cities but there's been atleast a few updates since then that's definitely improved stability. It's still acting up sometimes, which is frustrating as my PC specs are pretty high (RTX 4090 GPU, 7950x3D CPU, 64GB RAM). That said, again, the performance is notably better, but they've still got ways to go.
DD2 is almost a demake of the core design focus of the 1 when you think about the core arcade mindset design from the former teams at Capcom, the replayability and the meaningfull new game plus are inherant to the arcade, or "you have only one life" / speedrun and mechanics being well rounded and the world well level designed "also" for new game plus, hence why i have probably more then 50+ new game plus that allow for speedruns of all kind on dragon's dogma 1. It has almost ditched all these core designs (not really in the combat, even tho the added weighting of every animations and leans, motion warping and slow down for no reason is also an anti-arcade feel going against the combat design of dd1. but it's more about the structure of the story and the world that breaks the new game plus compared to 1.) and this very important identity from this capcom title to want to be more serious in his world and story but achieving none of the feel of the first one on these particular subject, the story shouldn't have tried to take itself seriously, it would have made for a more funny and memorable story with it's cringe or amateur feel just like the 1 and focus more on core level design / world level design and add more boss encounters or totally overhaul the unmoored world into something more important and large in scope than the short thing we got. I truely think they lost a lot, a looot of the dev time on trying to make the story serious and copy modern TV series tropes with it.
Oh ok, so it wasn't really my PC. Cause it's weird my game runs smooth at beginning of the game. Then when I reached Battahal it slows down like snail, even going back to Vermund is giving me big framerate drop. Even though I'm only using RTX 3070 but still seriously? It's still a freaking 3070 and I'm only running at 1080p.
"My specs are pretty high" Brother, you have currently a maxed out PC worth over 2500 USD in essentials alone. In a sane world no game should have any issue running well over 60 fps 4k native Ultra without any sort of frame gen or other tricks. "Durr get a console" the performance over there sucks as well
@@sheeshulex what’s crazy is even with the ability to complain about specs console players don’t it’s always the day one pc players. Why do you think that is? Oh that’s right because the specs on console are actually good and the only people to say they aren’t on console and are the people coping with the fact that they bought a 2500$ smartphone the game was good on release for console and I bought it on release first for pc just to switch to console a day later. Go ahead and look at the reviews on either console(not steam, but the reviews typed out on the game on console the people who have to play first to rate it,the people who can’t refund the game after a 30min play though)in they aren’t reviewed bombed to all hell once a TH-camr reviews it. Just because you’re running an excessive amount of specs doesn’t mean the game is bad especially when it can differ between different PCs.We all learned the scientific method right? The reviews where the specs don’t change between person to person are what actually matter.
I don't think dragon's dogma 2 did anything better than dragon's dogma: dark arisen. Sure, better graphics but the cost for it was way-way-way too much to pay. Lag, CTD:s and loading times etc 3 or 4 skills instead of 6? Only one weapon instead of two. More a game about huge tunnels, less fun exploring, chests are filled with crap only. like food? or such? Compare that to 1000 gold or 10 000.. urgh End game? As I understand it the falling pit ever-something was better in DD1 and even more so with the DLC BBI I only read how end game was a little here, I never got that far, due to CTDs etc but yeah..
@@dongarippo7279 this is my current problem man. I loved Dark Arisen and knowing that DD2 is literally just DD1(Not Dark Arisen) with fancier graphics gives me a hard time deciding whether to buy it or not.
Imagine an RPG in which Bethesda created the open world, Capcom created the gameplay mechanics, and old-school Bioware crafted the story and characters. Man....
I was starving for an open world fantasy rpg when DD2 came out so I gave it a shot. It was fun, and then I got burned out. It’s the same uninteresting enemies over and over and over. It’s just…. Tedious.
Yes, I hear you. I played the original for a long while, but got so OP and the difficulty didn’t keep up. Got bored and dnf. The second game seems exactly the same mechanics as the first. Hard pass, been there, done that.
Yeah, it's kinda low, but I still had fun with it. I noticed that for me the game got easy too quick. After level 30 or so you start to dominate most things. I downloaded a mod to make things harder, and it made even the familiar monsters fun to fight again. Still, shouldn't have to download a mod for basic difficulty balancing.
you had goblins, wolves, skeletons, zombies, harpies, slimes, bandits, phantoms, Lizard men, rock lizards and all of these enemies have 2 - 3 variants and i didnt even mention the elite enemies and bosses with some having variants and there being 3 undead bosses in the game. i think the game had decent variety of enemies once you get past battahl or enter the post game which has you fighting undead enemies you dont really see often.
@@Gorjak13Yeah but certain enemies you listed there are way more common than the others like goblins, bandits, and especially the damn lizardmen. So the issue is the frequency of specific enemies being way too high
@ThatsOk83 I think it makes sense plot wise. Goblins can be almost anywhere in rpgs and bandits, and theifs and smugglers are pretty common as well. Just look at zelda, it's the same thing, if you are constantly traveling on the road, you will always encounter goblins or undead if it's late st night.
@@collapsiblechair9112 yeah there are cool ideas they just go absolutely no where and that’s what’s frustrating. The coup plot is a great intro but it’s just dropped and then we are sent to another country to discover what is making pawns go crazy which again has a cool idea that goes no where. The secret of ending the cycle is also really cool and I remember thinking awesome the narrative finally is giving me something to work with but then once again it just goes no where. Like was said in the video the whole story feels half baked with no memorable npcs that you can care about. A good idea that isn’t exacted well no longer remains a good idea just a missed opportunity.
@@justinrandall9550The first game was kinda like that. Except for the main plot, most other quests were too open ended and lacking in closure. What made up for most of it was the art direction and it's vibe... specially after Dark Arisen, it's one of the most immersive dark fantasy games out there. You feel threatened by the night, important NPCs may die when you least expect, monsters spread death and destruction everywhere, there's political corruption and even other kingdoms are ploting against your own. It's just so sad and dark... it was really unique. I don't know if the sequel is up to that, which is why I didn't buy it.
The most frustrating feeling in DD2 IMO: Getting on a ox-cart, paying the fee, stopped less than half way to the destination by a boss monster which proceeds to destroy the cart and forcing me not only to kill the monster but also walk most of the way anyways. I still love the heck out of the game and am still replaying it to this day.
They should have let you be able to drive the cart in an attack, or a horse. If no horse’s, If DD3 comes out, you should be able to tame an animal. Imagine using a griffon as a mount
@@peterversionone Or a Chimera mount, that'd be really cool but I'm not sure it'd be feasible. Though mounts of some sort to help with traveling from place to place in the next DD game would be wonderful.
I think the best word to describe Dragon's Dogma 2 is "Missed Potential". Dragon's Dogma 1 was an incredible game that suffered from severe budget cut, forcing the devs to scale down their ambition. With DD2 seemingly having a proper budget this time around, anyone who played and loved DD1 was super excited at the prospect of what they could do with DD2. Alas it seems that for every step forward DD2 takes, it also takes 2 step back from its predecessor... The result ? I spent nearly 400h on DD1, replaying it, raising every vocation, going through Bitterblack Isle once more... and only 80h on DD2, just the time to complete one well rounded playthrough, starting NG+ and deciding that i just wasn't enjoying myself anymore...
It feels like the budget for DD2 was also reduced or the features were overly ambitious for the budget they received. They didn't get the same budget as, say, a Monster Hunter game.
Phew, people have some high expectations! There's another comment where someone is complaining about how boring the game gets. When someone asked how long it took for it to become boring, he replied it was 60 hours! I mean, come on, 60-80 hours of solid gameplay is nothing to scoff at. Especially considering all the mediocre and bad releases we've had recently, where most games barely hold up for even 20 hours.
@@Kenny-yl9pc Quality vs quantity. The quality of those 60 hours is not very high, and the only reason I saw the game through to the end was because I was waiting for that big payoff moment that just never came
@rolf1819 Yeah. And thats one of the worst takes possible. "I enoyed it so it HAS to be good. RIGHT? RIIIIIGGGHT?" It does not matter what you believe subjectively. I can enjoy myself throwing rocks into a pond. I can make prison fun, if i am locked in with a good mate. Doesn't change the fact that prison is ass. Or that, suddently, throwing rocks into the pond costs me 60 bucks for each rock which is not worth it whatsoever. People like you are the reason why video games nowadays ate 85% garbage, and the other 15% are often looked at as ""missed/wasted potential"" Stop licking up shit, from billionaires. And there might be a chance for GREAT products once more. Rather than "okayish" or very subjective "i enjoyed myself" 's. The game is decent. Nothing more. Nothing less. And the fact that you fought 95% of enemy types 20 minutes into the game is nothing less but insulting, ridiculous, simply pathetic. Could've been a 9/10, ended up beeing a 5/10. Enjoyable but repetitive combat. No enemy variety whatsoever, while COPYING the exact same enenmys. Yet removing most of them. No improvement to the key game mechanics and combat encounters. Over all a massive dissapointment. Can you have fun with it? Sure. As already mentioned, you can do so throwing shit into a lake. Is it a great game - objectively? Hell fucking no. Was there potential to be what baldurs gate was to this genre? Probably, yet it will be forgotten as DD 1 was, barely touched in comparison and probably won't getting an DLC or a sequel. Which is a shame.
The first time i fought a Griffin... I was on it and it flew off, that was the moment i realised just how much freedom there is, never before had i seen that in a game it while it isnt a perfect game, i love the true freedom im given to ride a Griffin and soo much more
@@miragemain105 The ox carts get raided too damn often and not even by something interesting 99% of the time. The game is just a bunch of chores by the end of it.
Once the honeymoon phase is gone the game just became an annoying, tedious, and (eventually) boring, even their great combat can't cover it up. Love how their answer to keep players from being bored traversing their world is just to filled it with filler enemies everywhere with some rarer or interesting encounter here and there. Absolutely agree with your analysis of the game being half-baked--especially the story.
Whatever it is, I’m having so much fun with DD2. Already blast 247 hours into the game and now on my third NG+. Furthermore the game run much better now. I hope we can get a DLC soon.
I get the half baked metaphor, but to me it felt less doughy… like, you took fantastic pizza Ingredients, got the proportions just right to taste fantastic, even got the fancy balsamic drizzle and basil infused olive oil, then you realized the dough would take too long and just served it as a salad 😂
The thing is many characters actually have their own side quests. For example, Wilhemina have her own secret quests where she plans to kill Allard who is on that Queen side. In one of the ending of that quests, player gets to know that Wilhemina is actually a half Bestran. And that Allard is even bigger scum that we thought of. He actually killed her parents when she was small and then she plans to take revenge by exposing his crimes to the public and then killing him. There is another quests where you help help people of Melve move to Harve village after it's been rebuilt. These kind of quests don't come naturally in your quests log but they only show when you interact with NPCs time to time.
DD2 is like one crazy tabletop RPG session, where the game is a DM and all the insane shit it throws at you as you wander around is it's story. It doesn't have memorable characters, as the true memorable character is your main pawn. I absolutely adore this game.
I like both games, but always kinda hated the pawns. I wish you could go it alone, make your own teammates, or select from a few pre-made ones that had personalities, quests, and back stories.
That's literally what the game is about. Totally didn't pay any attention to what was going on... If you took away the pawn system then the game's story wouldn't make any sense.
@@nicholasrova3698 The entire point of the story is in regards to the pawn system and using the pawns of other heroes within the game. The game breaks the 4th wall... YOU ARE IN A VIDEO GAME AND THE NPC'S ARE SUSPECT THAT THEY ARE NOTHING MORE THAN CONSTRUCTS WHO ARE IN SERVICE TO THE PLAYER. The first game also revealed this at the end...
in ddda you were rewarded with more xp per lower pawn level up to +25% for a pawn under 25 levels than you so you didnt really want to switch out every level, usually i switched ever ~10 levels, and the assassin vocation had augments that increased stats if you were playing without any pawns. Assassin was goated, all all damage and almost no def. No pawns or all 3 25 levels lower than you gave a flat +75% xp.
The game seems only 70% complete with a lot of corners cut. 40% of the missions are almost impossible without Google because they don't give you enough information. It's a fun game but very incomplete.
And yet Elden ring got game of the year….when 100% of the “quests” need a wiki or TH-cam to finish…or even start I agree that it has issues but personally nothing to do with quests (they are better than the first games) What we needed was An everfall dungeon Dark arisen style repeatable endgame Hard mode More bosses Where the fk is the UR Dragon for gods sake More classes A new game plus that actually changes the game All of that was in the first game It should have been base game for the sequel
Dark Arisen was done by another lead dev (Itsuno didn't have full control) and alot of the staff from DD:O are still working there so I don't really fear that the "new" team (which is just the old team minus Itsuno) can't pull off a great expansion. Capcom had amazing sales and said DD is now another one of their "main" IPs, so I guess/hope/think there will be something substantial coming up. That it is taking that long is actually a good thing. My guess is after MH:W releases so the 2 franchises don't interfere with each other.
Imagine a Dragon's Age game with Dragon's Dogma 2 combat (but with a full party of companions), character creator, and NPC A.I. Add in choice, like Baldur's Gate 3, side quests like The Witcher 3 / Cyberpunk 2077, and superb writing, and that lore would pop.
It seems so easy. To just go and do the things that were already done. But no one does. All AAAs have bloated budgets but manage to come out much worse than the games 10 years ago. It's crazy.
@@stanislavkimov2779 it's easier said than done to get everything right. The reason said games are so good is because they focus on their strengths, to have a game that does it all well would be an incredible feat.
Everyone complained about warrior having only 3 moves they can use at the same time in DD1 that they increased it to 4! Except they also lowered every other class to 4 from 6 😂
Except warfarer, the class which combines every other vocation in the game for you to mix, that one only has 3 fucking moves because the way you change weapons is an ability you always need to have equiped
@@fsjof exactly! i was pissed off that my strider was divided to two classes. Why i have to pick up double jump on a thief when in dd1 i could just do it passively?
I'm very glad for this because it really needs it. It's absolutely not a "bad game," but sadly it didn't do enough to really demand the attention of many people other than a very dedicated, personal playerbase. This would be very forgivable if not for the huge price tag and inflated budget that didn't seem to be utilized efficiently (that, or it wasn't funded nearly as much as Capcom likes to suggest, having *said* they now view it as one of their primary IPs).
They are still doing updates so that definitely means something! If I was CAPCOM I would not waste time on this because the player base doesn't deserve any more effort. I've played 700+ hours since launch and even if they never do anything I will still have fun with what I have. I played Wukong about 50 hours. Some other games are on my radar but not released yet. I try to play other games but I feel like I could get another godsbane blade instead. I'm an addict. Something new always happens. Like my thief pawn just shredded a drake that had taken flight and I thought it might escape. That didn't happen before!
Whilhamina actually has a side mission after he second time helping you. You get a back story on her that's actually pretty interesting, this game makes you seek out side quest rather than mark them for you. You have to constantly check in with NPCs
The problem isn't that the quests aren't explicitly marked down, the problem is that practically none of them are satisfying to do, mainly due how terrible written they are, Wilhelmina's is one of the *very* few that have a decent payoff. My _favorite_ is the Phantom Cart quest: you hear rumors, mainly from other cart-drivers that they have seen/heard reports of a cart that rides at evening, which is forbidden, if you investigate further you discover that said cart is a clandestine operation of the Queen Disa to sell pawns as slaves to Phaseus from Battahl whose empress has outlawed pawn-slavery. So you go undercover: ride the cart pretending to be a pawn in order to get solid evidence and after you do that and free the pawns from that ride... nothing happens. You report your findings to Brant which doesn't bring an end to the Queen's scheme since Brant despite being a Captain can't overule her when the logical thing to do would be to report to Battahl's empress to inform that one of her advisors is actively breaking her law. Worse yet the rendezvous point for the delivery of the pawns is Battalh's palace backyard *when the empress lives* which just makes the setting even more underwhelming. That's your average quest in this game, they have next to no payoff. The fact that they are hard to trigger just accentuate the disappointment.
I've replayed it 3 times and think it's fun. Best was heading straight for wayfarer and playing the hole game with it but mystic spearman is a medieval Darth Maul
I've beaten the game like 5 times already and still occasionally restart the game to see how far I can get without armor and only my main pawn. Still the best game gameplay-wise of 2024. Really wish for a hard mode like in DD:DA though, if not for an entire DLC.
I still think DD2 was just a tech demo to test the limits of RE engine and develop a new tech that would be used in MH:Wilds. Especially the open world seamless loading stuff.
@@Chrys-marcelMambou Sure, that's why the director said in an interview that the tech for seamless open world was developed alongside DD2 and that they couldn't do it before. Besides, MH: World is a complete game and runs on an old ass engine that has nothing to do with RE:Engine used in MH:Wilds. MH:World being a tech demo for Wilds is just nonsense.
Not only DD 1 had more variety of enemies also the end game magics where better too, like that ice magic that grew giant icicles that pierced through giant bosses, oh man that one was so satisfying. Its like they made the map bigger and dumbed down everything else.
Surprised to see you hear and yeah the dogma series really scratches an itch that a lot of other games like souls games don’t scratch in terms of how you fight monsters
I love this game, it’s still my GOTY. It just needs more improvements and interface on/off options and more content and DLC expansions that really grab your attention. They should do what the Witcher 3 Did and make 2 large expansions, blood & wine was like a whole new game in the game, that’s kinda what I wanna see them doo with DD2 but in their own special way for this game.
Mine too. Large expansions would be so awesome. Speaking of Witcher I don't know why but I had the urge to play so I downloaded my old game to ps5. It was a favorite back in the day and I couldn't get into the combat! So- I did another playthrough of DD2. I've played since launch and still log on once a week. I sure have lots of hours in this for a single player game that is so "bad." lol.
I discussed this very recently on nihil00's channel. I find myself replaying DD1 to this day, with THOUSANDS of hours. With DD2, after earning the platinum (around 300 hours) I got bored and abandoned it. They are both incomplete games, but where I feel DD1 was limited because of resources, DD2 seems limited by laziness. The story is worse, the enemy variety is scarcer, the companions and NPC are way less intresting, the beastren are wasted as a concept both in story and gameplay, there is less personalization of your character's equipment, and the amount of content in general is lesser (especially the post game, which is non-existent). There were numerous ways in which the game could've improved on the original... but it wasn't. Hell even the combat in some aspects is inferior to the original, which for me is unforgivable. I wouldn't even consider it a sidegrade.... they had 10 years to perfect an already winning formula. This is a straight up inferior product than the original. All DD1 needed was a more intresting and alive world map, with more NPCs and enemies, and better random quests, which is the only aspect in which I can say confidently DD2 surpassed the original. But aside from that... big yikes. And that's the BASE GAME, because if we include the DLC, then DD2 doesn't come even close. In synthesys, the sequel was a massive disappointment because it was rushed and unfinished, in a way that's even more insulting to us fans than the original. The original at least had a clear vision... the sequel struggles to even find purpose. And to me there isn't purpose, it just ended up being a soulless, sanitized and corporate cash grab. And I am not alone in this sentiment, most of the major creators and personalities in the fanbase were majorly disappointed.
I agree with your very word. I was very excited about trying out Dragon's Dogma 2, because I've never played the original. But after playing and finishing BG3 this task proved to be impossible. You see, I played this God forsaken game for 40 hours, and I was thrilled at first, but like around the 20 hour playtime mark I started asking myself: _"Why am I NOT having FUN anymore?"_ I thought something was wrong with me, I didn't understand the game design, or the story... You see, I'm a "story first" kind of person. And after playing more of this game I realized - this game has no story, it's complete dоgshit. The setting is interesting in concept, but not in execution, the characters are bland and boring, I could NEVER empathize with them or worry for them, the open world is EMPTY, the enemy variety is REPETITIVE... It truly felt... _soulless_ . The hole BG3 managed to repair within me could never even be approached by the likes of DD2. Those 2 games have a sky VS earth difference. And earth is not of a healthy kind... So with all that said, I dropped this game, which I haven't done in YEARS, because I'm very SELECTIVE with what I play, and ALSO I paid full price for it... I continued my second BG3 playthrough instead... Major disappointment, I feel for DD fans who were insulted by it.
@@ВладиславБулаев-л3э look, although it's a very old game at this point, I would recommend you try the first game complete edition, "Dragon's Dogma - Dark Arisen". It is in many ways better than its sequel, and although it also has its fair share of problems (the map is kind of small and there isn't much to do outside of cities, except fighting monsters), I can vouch for the world, characters and story to be far more intresting than Dogma 2. The combat, which was way ahead of its time, has also aged very well in my opinion. So if you want to try something similar, I would advise you give it a try. There is also a fairly comprehensive modpack (Great Mods Compilation) available on NexusMods (I hate that website but unfortunately it's where the mod is) that greatly enhances the experience, both visually and gameplay-wise. The game isn't very mod friendly though (thanks Capcom) and requires a bit of tinkering to install multiple mods, which is why I recommend this one, the most complete one. Be warned though that it includes a nsfw nude mod, that you might not want, but thankfully it is removable, along with other mods that could make your character too OP. The world of Dragon's Dogma is one of the most unique ever made in the fantasy genre and I sincerely hope you give it another chance, with what many consider to be the superior experience, and also the original concept of the game. Unfortunately many ideas were never implemented, but there is ton of videos on the subject on youtube if you are intrested, that help you better grasp the incredible concept this world was in its original state. I also hope that the rumors of a DLC for Dogma 2 are true and that it ends up greatly enhancing the experience, much like it was with the frist game when the expansion "Dark Arisen" came out, adding QoL improvements, a new area and many other creatures and content in general. But even then, this game was a massive waste of potential and a major letdown for a hardcore fan like myself, who has truly been waiting and praying for 10 years to finally get a sequel. For reference, my game time on Dogma 1 is 3409 hours, accumulated in the years, while with DD2 I got bored approximately towards the 300 hours mark, after getting the platinum. I enjoyed the game to an extent, because I love this universe... but honestly as soon as I stopped playing I went back to Dogma 1 and never looked back. Again, maybe a DLC might change the things, but now that even Itsuno has left, Capcom has to really win back my trust this time. No more second chances, this time they better deliver, or I am done with them as a company.
Pawns and fighting are by far the things I enjoyed the most. There were so many hilarious and epic moments that just kept me glued to the game. The pawns, even in their imperfections, added a lot of flavour to it. Sometimes things lined up so perfectly that you might mistake us for a group of friends cooperating. And sometimes they were such dumbasses it was hard not to laugh.
But why do so many people still share false information about the microtransactions? Only one Portcrystal can be bought through the store, one singular, not plural. You and so many other reviewers say plural implying that you can buy several or many of them to make travel so much easier, it's just one. This distinction matters, because 1 additional Portcrystal that u can access through the store doesn't break the game's fast travel system.
The number 1 criticism of the original game was the enemy variety the fact that this game has even a weaker enemy variety just shows how tone deaf the devs were when making this game and it does not help that most of them were from the original game, combat and exploration were heavily damaged because of this because you knew what enemies you will face.
I didn't know it was mostly made by ppl from the first game. That makes this so much more disappointing. I hope they give the franchise over to the guy who did the dark arisen dlc cause that guy actually knows how to make dragons dogma good
Vanilla DD1 has worse enemy variety than DD2, especially once you account for the improved ai and the more varied movesets of the different sub species in DD2. You have to include Dark Arisen if you want to make the argument that DD1 has more variety.
@@FatherMulk DD:DA goes on sale so often that it doesn’t even need to be stated. You can net the DD1 + Dark Arisen bundle for just 5 measly bucks on most days. The fact that it’s enemy variety still contends with the sequel that’s a decade older, speaks volumes on the latter.
@@Dopameanniie I was just pointing out a common misconception, but yeah, I agree with you for the most part. even just 2-3 more regular common enemy types would have helped the game in that department immensely. DD2 added a lot of bosses that only get used once and while cool, I think those resources probably should have went towards (new) enemies the player would be fighting 90% of the time, rather than novelty one-off bosses.
Objectively speaking, the base game is pretty much identical to base DD1. The "soul" is the same, just that as a sequel we have higher expectations of it. Base DD1 was never a "good" game, it just held some novelty in gameplay mechanics. Now if we're comparing DD2 to Dark Arisen, then yeah, DD2 is far inferior. The biggest problem with DD2 is that they just remade/reimagined DD1 in a modern game engine but did little else. It's not a true sequel, nor does it build on its predecessor. In fact, while some things have been added in DD2, just as many things have been removed. I feel like Capcom just didn't have the balls to go all in on a franchise they consider "niche" or "unsafe" and wasted all the potential that was there.
After seeing the very first trailer I knew how it would end up. It's sad that this game completely overshadowed Rise of the Ronin that came out in the same day and is such an underrated game when you don't look at its graphical flaws, but Dragon's Dogma 2 is being held together by the modders and they're doing a great job with it.
DD1 vanilla was even more surface level than DD2, if they release a dlc comparable to bitterback but make it even more infinitely replayable life would be good and the game would beat dd1
dragons dogma 2 is honestly one of the most fun games that I've ever played, my only complaint about the entire game is the story can be summed up in half a sentence.
I think the good news is dragons dogma 1 got a huge dlc that fixed and added a lot. My hope is dragons dogma 2 will do the same. Something that gives us good characters, a good story, and more monster's.
@@TvsovieticaDoVampBelfordRoxoitsuno was not the man in charge of the dark arisen expansion, the same guy in charge of it is now in charge of dd2 development so hopefully it works out

Larian asked gamers what their thoughts were and how to improve the game. Gamers did it for FREE via early access... Capcom should have done the same for DD2.
In my opinion, the biggest problem of this game is that it sabotages itself. They made of exploration (and fight) the main focus of the game, and than they created mechanics that prevent you (or make extremely frustrating) to do so. I was so exited to explore the world in this game, but I ended up always thinking "why should I explore the world if I can't then carry what I found with me". So I stopped exploring and everything bacame boring.
this! The vilalges with chests were so few and far in between that you were ALWAYS overload. It just made me feel burned out after a few weeks of playing
I'll be honest, what killed it for me was the story. I just never ever cared, not even from midrange onwards and thus stopped playing, nothing in the game made me care and being an RPG, I just went back to Fallout 4, yes Fallout 4, that bad
I think I’m waiting on a sale for it. I appreciate the booty on your characters here… ahem. This is a high quality review here, would be nice if Capcom could digest it and utilize some of your suggestions.
Bro you can build whatever, every class is strong and fun (except for maybe like mage cause sorcerer is way better) I'd recommend sorcerer or mystic spearhand. Also warfarer is really cool since it let's you swap weapons and skills mid fight @@Python_Bacon
The fact that the final dragon fight took me like 10 seconds with the Thief spin to win attack, followed by a cutscene final boss in the other world made it feel very lackluster for the ending. Everything leading up to that felt awesome. But definitely didn’t bother with NG+
I wanted to like this game soooo bad. I absolutely loved the first game. This one, I didn’t. Maybe it was the skills, lack of fast travel/pacing, IDK. I quit 8 hours in due to just… boredom. Maybe i will try it again next year or something. I guess i should since i paid for it.
They knew BBI was what saved DD1 and yet they still chose to leave out most of it's features from the second game. You can also tell they rushed or even skipped many acts of the main story. Also why tf did they go down to only 1 skill bar.
The dlc debacle isnt fully represented. Yes, you can buy 1 port crystal as a micro transaction. You can not however, buy unlimited and unfettered fast travel. You can buy one, and just one. All the microtransactions are single purchase items. Beyond this, you can not buy ferrystones as a microtransaction. The game does not allow you "unlimited" fast travel as a paid dlc.
Two issues with this game. A. You can't change mouth, eyes, etc... on a slider in character customization. If you could, it would be the best. B. You can't make more than one character. This is restricting. Restrictions like THAT, are bad. C. I wish there was more freedom. Maybe I want to be a bounty hunter, or a worker, or a rancher...
Honestly I loved dragons dogma my biggest issue with 2 is you had almost half the abilities you can have equipped I wanted the combat system expanded but I feel like all I got was it was nerfed. I still enjoyed my time in the world but but after 40 hours I got burned out
Game had so much potential and felt good to play but it just feels so empty, meanwhile the recent update for it on steam is a prioritise graphics and prioritise performance option like we are playing on console and the graphic settings aren't just there already.
What happened is that the game was amazing until I realized that nothing matters. Side quests do not matter, gathering definetly do not matter, crafting/upgrading do not matter at all, money do not matter and exploration do not matter. Just run to the kitty cat city and buy gear and then back to the main quest that is like 2 hours long but travelling is making it last longer and kill the last boss that is easier than wolf pack (tho wolfs are prolly hardest enemy in game because they grab you and might run off cliff sometimes). All other enemies can be countered by standing on a cliff that requires animation for climbing up. They literally just can't figure out how to get up if you keep shooting them with any ranged weapon/skill and pawns are harassing them. Even dragons and gryphons do not realize they have wings.
It was my most looked forward to game of the year as well and, even despite its shortcomings, I'd say it was the game I nonetheless had the most fun with. Until I didn't - which was NG+. No reason or even desire to replay it or continue, due to the sheer weight of all the issues bearing down on you by that time. It had gotten too easy, there was no more equipment to find, no more fashion to pursue (the removal of equipment layers really hurt that), more of the same monsters without harder or variant versions, no new enemies, no special class to unlock (maybe Warfarer should have been a NG+ class? Maybe we should have had Magic Knight and a few more classes?). Also, on replay, nothing would change. The cycle idea is great, but second and third cycle could have been like the Nioh franchise difficulty leaps, and an ARPG with higher level gear and gear variants, unique things. I still loved it though. Problem I think was not enough of a budget was allocated. Not enough resources. Itsuno likely had to cut back on what he could do with it, and his coming out and saying that the game was in the state he wanted to release was I think his very Japanese saving face statement hiding some things going on behind the scenes. His leaving Capcom was really telling. I don't know the circumstances, but I think it points back to internal frictions and resource management. I think we will still get a DLC for the game, but it may not be what it might have been had Itsuno still been there. What happened? Monster Hunter Wilds, basically. The money and resources I think went there and Capcom didn't really know what they had here.
Those are some good points, and yeah - There's likely budgetary reasons for why DD2 turned out the way it did. Monster Hunter is a household name, atleast in comparison to Dragon's Dogma so it's very likely Capcom allocated more resources to that. Not that i'm complaining as I love Monster Hunter, but that would explain some of it.
I really hoped DD2 would do coop and ditch the pawns, they are pretty useless and distract rather than help. This game couldve changed the face of RPG's if theyd just replaced pawns with seemless coop. Not to mention most of the combat/monsters etc is just carried over from DD1, the class decisions were just bad and besides the graphical upgrade I couldnt tell ya why ya shouldnt just mod DD1
Have to disagree about the combat - the combat for mages/sorcerer is objectively worse than the first game. Less spells, less spell slots, less utility.
I REALLY hope they do some updates, or even a DLC, where they add not only the missing enemies we had in DD1, but also NEW ones and more varied encounters. This game has so much potential, it'd be a shame to see it go to waste like this.
I tried to really enjoy this game. But honestly: holy shit the amount of walking and how often the “cart travel” gets interrupted… which I may as well just travel normally since it was faster. Killed it. Look I don’t want a fast travel point every 10 feet. But I also do not want to cross a map every time to do 1 quest. Yall know there’s a quest line that makes you go back and forward several times!?! Waste up the ass of crystals. And this travel wasn’t fun at all. Combat every 15 feet is just annoying as all hell
Unfortunately, DD2 character creator is kinda worse than what Nioh 2 has or even DD1, due to how they went around designing it. You can change eye shape, nose shape, mouth shape in DD1. In DD2 those are locked to the face shape and changing it, changes other 3 as well. I had some faces where I didn't like nose or mouth, but liked the eyes. But there is no flexibility.
It lacked an endgame loop for me. The whole "unmoored world" wasn't comparable to everfall and bitterblack. if you ever wanted to go back there you would be forced to run through the story in NG+. While the everfall allowed you to have a community raid boss and bitterblack had random loot to grab through multiple runs.
Its a giant world.. made up of tunnels... tunnels over tunnels over tunnels and maybe an open area that is only there to give the bosses some room to move...
I think the Devs are aware of the potentials that the game is having, even from the first game itself It looks more they are scared or not confident enough to creating various features especially after the failure from Dragon's Dogma Online
@@MyNameisRevenant perhaps because they still see the demand in the market for the sequel over the online game? and Hideaki Itsuno was finally able to work on the title at the time
The problem with this game is the core elements. They should have fully upgrade what made DD1 a hidden Gem. Taking out classes, No enemie varation like DD1, The Graphics is a bit too much, to name a few mistakes. They should have honed in on the Fantasy aspect and Mythical Aspect of the game and fully upgrade pawn interations and inclanations as well as More focused Combat. The quest style is dated as well. They also should Have more save files and Maybe 7 new classes to get the player base hype again. Sadly They gave us more of the Same DD1 but this time it feels more like a Half baked thought then the first Game did.
Why is everyone so stuck on the idea of save files? If its multiple save files then it would break the idea of the rift, cus you'd see pawns from the same account all over, everything else I can agree with, but having more save files would not make the game any better whatsoever.
@@AMtoDG More save files equals More replayablity too me. At least. I hopped back on DD2 after completing the game and not playing for some months and realize that I didn't want to Delete my old Save because I spent a lot of time on that. You can also experiment With more save files and there's a lot of other benefits but save files are one thing. The main problem is definitely How Stale the game is and gets.
@@therealone844 Most def gets stale sadly, spent a good chunk of my life on DD1 and it never really "bored" me as much as this one did even though I love it for what it is to a degree.
@@AMtoDG Same. I think I played DD1 for 9 years. The best parts about it was the Feel. It was Darker and It still felt like pieces of a Great story. It felt Dissonanant. I think If DLC come for DD2 they need it to be Darker again but also Fun. I think They should take from Monster hunter ice Bourne. I didn't like that game but IMO there's potential in the variation of Enemies and Better equipment Loop. DD2 should have deep dived into The mythical enemies and Numerous WAYS and weaknesses to take down those Enemies. While also giving new classes. And they need Better writers. Like BG3 or something like Elden ring (even though elden ring story isn't on the nose) when you piece the lore together It's a amazing story. But yeah It's something wrong with the game fundamentally and that's because the original creator stuck too close to DD1 without REALLY upgrading it.
@@therealone844 Home run with everything you said, tbh can't even say it better. Fully agree. They do it like that and I promise you I'd be up all night long playing the game LOL
"Half-baked" doesn't even quite capture it accurately. It feels like all the inspiration they had for the first game was lost; it's like the game was made only to check a box. The biggest sin that DD2 commits is the loss of granularity in customizing your armor/clothing. The 2nd biggest is that I can't even remember the OST, whereas literally everyone remembers DD1's title music, Cassardis, the duke's demesne, duskmoon tower, coils of light, etc etc.
I loved the first and the second was my most anticipated game however the second felt and played just like the first in a bad way im my opinoon its a bit more clunky becuase its so much bigger
Hahaha I was about to mention the throwing. Me with full health looking at a high up chest. To my warrior: help me! Mage: I’d love to help you but it looks like your health is full. Me: THAT’S WHY I DIDN’T ASK YOU!!
This game had the prefect blue print with dark arisen and online but seems capcom only cares about monster hunter. It’s crazy because this game feels like step back from dark arisen which is crazy because it’s a sequel.
DD1 is one of my favorite game of all time. The demo version hooked me and I bought the game day one. I played DD1 vanilla around 120 hours. But with DA I played it again and again and again. More than 2500 hours total. When DD2 was announced I was both excited and skeptical. But in the end I really love DD2 despite its story being garbage. It is just the vanilla version but I already played more than 800 hours and I'm not tired of it. I don't even feel the need to go back to DD1 yet.
Imo, playing both ddon an ddda I can say dd2 Is just bad in so many ways, land you explore sucks, took out some of the best moves from every class ,enemies like goblins, harpies, bandits etc stun lock you no matter the armor. Jumping 1 foot off the ground to make travel even more of a hassle, I mean I can go on. The only thing, only thing I like about this game is the mounting, other then that. This game sucks an its just not good
Lets be perfecly honest. The only 2 good things about Dd2 was character creation and combat. Everything else felt reused and lackluster. The visuals was ok. The storys behind the side storys was ok at its best. The story was so off que it just did not deliver like dragons Dogma 1. Lets not even mention they added the corona virus in dd2. If you even slept with it well time to restart if u didnt have the better life stone. Oh yea and farming dragons in dd1 was how you got gear maxed out. If u farm them in dd2 u have a chance to get it and u wont even notice. I hated the delivery of dd2. Keep up the good work though l. Love how detailed u was about it.
Its sad. They never got to finish dragons dogma and wanted to right the wrongs in this one but the same bs happened again. Forced to launch early at the expense of pretty much the entire plot.
Really? I bought it on sale too and I love it. I played DD:DA way more but DD2 is great so far and I'm sure it will be even better when they release an expansion/dlc eventually. Even if there's no DLC, I still think it's a solid modern rpg imo.
I enjoyed the combat and the world exploration. And I most definitely loved the Character Creator. I created the closest I could come to Cheetara from the Thundercats and I created Dorian. The story was okay but I wouldn't say I liked the forced making out with certain characters. For me it was really only Ulrika but I didn't like how I had no choice over whether or not she kisses me. That being said, I did have the choice to turn her down after but the initial scene was offputting for me. I actually never finished the game because I have so many other games requiring my attention. Overlooking the lackluster romances (at least for me), I do enjoy the combat and the exploration very much. It's one of those games that when I play, I can play for a hours but when I'm not playing, I'm not really thinking about it. It seems unfair to say that because I do like the game but that's just my impression of it.
They never fixed the performance and the so called big performance patch did very little to help and to add on to that there's still no information if were getting a dlc toa dd more enemies variety it seems like the game was abandoned and left with a skeleton crew to do the bare minimum I like the game but it's one of the biggest regret purchases I've done in years I figured I'd give it a couple week to patch out the problems and those weeks turned to months to still no real fix in sight after 200+days.
Can't wait for a paid dlc that allows you to sidestep everything that's not fun about a game, enabling the game to play itself entirely for the player's convenience. Maybe they can even bundle it in the $130 edition.
lol! Honestly I did lol- that wasn't fake. I was thinking- Would you like a horse? Click here. Would you like the AI to play the entire game? Click here. Create your own story? Click here.
Cool combat and pawn system. Poor everything else. This is just Dragons Dogma 1 with better visuals. Missed opportunity to be goty rpg material. Lacking enemy types, boring characters, bland story, tiring fetch quests, no mounts to ride, and world design very copy and paste.
This game feels like : when you get in high spirit and motivation to make a perfect game, you create a lot of stuff but those stuff later get jumbled up and contradicting many things, you ended up losing your spirit and motivation on it then just do the rest lazily, you cut corners and stop caring for the game, you just want it done and move on. We all know that since the first one DD is not a game for everyone, it was wonky, complicated, and like just took different approach than most of the game on the same genre (restricted fast travel, companion inclinations, etc) which we came to love as it is. But now they just milking the fans out with full price and micro-transactions, and the rough performance on launch didn't help it either. For most fans sure they could took it and swallow it even if it was like a hard gumball, but it wouldn't be the same case for new people who just getting know DD, plus they also ended up complicating things with single character slot save. it's a shame really, it's still an okay game but it lost so many potential on how it could be, DD 1 has more 'soul' in it.
They didn't learn their lesson the last time with the Original Dragon's Dogma. With how 2 it plays out it feels like it's meant to be a reboot of the franchise. But 4 class abilities doesn't beat 6 even with the gimicky fucking Jack-of-All they made. Unless they make a Dark Arisen level "Special Edition" Dragons Dogma 2 is donezo.
Wait so you’re telling me, that starting off weak then becoming overpowered is a problem? I feel like that’s the power fantasy that I look forward to in any game. What’s the point of getting fancy endgame weapons that don’t deal massive damage?
I do think that Dragon's Dogma 2 following on the heels of the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3 did not help it either. People with no prior experience of Dragon's Dogma, they were kind of disappointed by comparison; especially regarding character creation and classes. Like, with only three races to choose from, all of them rather disappointing compared to BG3, and you actually had to travel in the world with no fast travel to unlock classes, I'm sure that turned a lot of people off.
Get a console it’s always pc players complaining about performance when the game is made to run on 60fps
"My specs are pretty high"
Brother, you have currently a maxed out PC worth over 2500 USD in essentials alone.
The reviews where the specs don’t change between person to person are what actually matter.
the game has all the tools that rpg lovers would love but the execution is a lot to be desired

I don't think dragon's dogma 2 did anything better than dragon's dogma: dark arisen. Sure, better graphics but the cost for it was way-way-way too much to pay. Lag, CTD:s and loading times etc
3 or 4 skills instead of 6? Only one weapon instead of two. More a game about huge tunnels, less fun exploring, chests are filled with crap only. like food? or such? Compare that to 1000 gold or 10 000.. urgh
End game? As I understand it the falling pit ever-something was better in DD1 and even more so with the DLC BBI
I only read how end game was a little here, I never got that far, due to CTDs etc but yeah..

The combat makes uninteresting enemies interesting
Yes, I hear you. I played the original for a long while, but got so OP and the difficulty didn’t keep up. Got bored and dnf. The second game seems exactly the same mechanics as the first. Hard pass, been there, done that.
Maybe the problem is you?
Yep, rather boring game.
Hey, it’s better than most modern games tho. Star Wars outlaws for example.
The enemy variety is terrible and it makes the gameplay boring really quick.
@nicholasrova3698 Idk I'm like level 38 and that drake and the griffin on the way to Harve I can't even damage enough to kill. Lol
you had goblins, wolves, skeletons, zombies, harpies, slimes, bandits, phantoms, Lizard men, rock lizards and all of these enemies have 2 - 3 variants and i didnt even mention the elite enemies and bosses with some having variants and there being 3 undead bosses in the game. i think the game had decent variety of enemies once you get past battahl or enter the post game which has you fighting undead enemies you dont really see often.

I still love the heck out of the game and am still replaying it to this day.

Stop licking up shit, from billionaires.
I really wanted a full party of my own characters. I hated having to swap pawns every few levels and just using other peoples characters in general.
The game breaks the 4th wall... in ddda you were rewarded with more xp per lower pawn level up to +25% for a pawn under 25 levels than you so you didnt really want to switch out every level, usually i switched ever ~10 levels, and the assassin vocation had augments that increased stats if you were playing without any pawns.
And yet Elden ring got game of the year….when 100% of the “quests” need a wiki or TH-cam to finish…or even start
I agree that it has issues but personally nothing to do with quests (they are better than the first games)
What we needed was
An everfall dungeon
Dark arisen style repeatable endgame
Hard mode
More bosses
Where the fk is the UR Dragon for gods sake
More classes
A new game plus that actually changes the game
All of that was in the first game
It should have been base game for the sequel
Way better than Eldene Ring in term of quest xD.

Regardless of the tremendous amount of negativity, I'm having an absolute blast still even after 200 hours in and have so much to do still.
@@barbwilson4820 Screw that, I've played it from the start and loved it. I'd like some new stuff.
Whilhamina actually has a side mission after he second time helping you. You get a back story on her that's actually pretty interesting, this game makes you seek out side quest rather than mark them for you. You have to constantly check in with NPCs
Then allards role in various areas become different, ppl really miss the depth of this game
I skipped it, Commander. The Character Creation didn't include Prothean. This Cycle continues to disappoint me.

So basically your whole life is killing goblins.
I really tried but it was boring to me
I still think DD2 was just a tech demo to test the limits of RE engine and develop a new tech that would be used in MH:Wilds. Especially the open world seamless loading stuff.
No, monster hunter wilds was in development even before DD2. The real game that is a tech demo to wilds is monster hunter world
@@Chrys-marcelMambou Sure, that's why the director said in an interview that the tech for seamless open world was developed alongside DD2 and that they couldn't do it before.

Nothing killed my enthusiasm for this faster than 1) no Mystic Knight 2) I couldn't even delete my character, let alone have multiple saves
You can absolutely delete your character if you played even a few weeks after release
Don't perpetuate the stupid narrative of "lazy devs".
No, they were most likely rushed.. not because they were "lazy".
Stop sucking off dd1 it ain't better lmao
Dark arisen wasn't spearheaded by Itsuno, so... Yeah him leaving isn't that big of deal since the best content in the original was not his design.

Precisely, thank you.
Useless criticism

I always figured Capcom unintentionally sabotaged the project and moved most of the staff to work on Monster Hunter instead.

@@EternalBeautyTV Everyone has their own opinion but yours is wrong lol
It's a pretty dam good game with some holes that simply need tightening. Some flat execution would be my only criticism.
This game went from day 1 bu too never bought it as soon as I found out they removed the ability to play as a child.

I think the Devs are aware of the potentials that the game is having, even from the first game itself
It looks more they are scared or not confident enough to creating various features especially after the failure from Dragon's Dogma Online
So fearful they are, it makes you wonder why they did a sequel to the first game to begin with?
I came to love the game..just wandering around killing anything so good
Looks like a game I'd like if it was made 15 years ago.
More than 2500 hours
total.
This game sucks an its just not good
You know what happens when a game takes years to make? It becomes years old on release.
And even the character creation was less impressive than DD1. You can't even make your Arisen ripped with a six pack.
Its sad. They never got to finish dragons dogma and wanted to right the wrongs in this one but the same bs happened again. Forced to launch early at the expense of pretty much the entire plot.
i bought this game a few days ago for 25€, bro... most wasted money of my life
Really? I bought it on sale too and I love it. I played DD:DA way more but DD2 is great so far and I'm sure it will be even better when they release an expansion/dlc eventually. Even if there's no DLC, I still think it's a solid modern rpg imo.
I bought it full price LOL... You got off lightly.
Played it on release on PS5. No stability or fps issues. Game was exactly like the first but better, which is what I wanted. Was great.
Click here.
This game with 6+ enimies types well places, Baldurs Gate 3 levels of companion complexity and a good enough story, would be the RPG of the decade.
Capcom can't write deep and complex stories, let's be honest lol.
Cool combat and pawn system. Poor everything else. This is just Dragons Dogma 1 with better visuals. Missed opportunity to be goty rpg material. Lacking enemy types, boring characters, bland story, tiring fetch quests, no mounts to ride, and world design very copy and paste.
Good comment
Agreed
I already forgot about this game exist.
It is a fun game 7,5 for me
Yeah, it's a love/disappointed situation for me. The game does some things really well, others not so much
Wait so you’re telling me, that starting off weak then becoming overpowered is a problem?
I feel like that’s the power fantasy that I look forward to in any game. What’s the point of getting fancy endgame weapons that don’t deal massive damage?
I've been avoiding this game! Just don't have the time to invest into this one!
