Revisiting Mass Effect 2 has been such a breath of fresh air. Anyway, let me know what you think about the video. Still testing out this new "gameplay" format instead of just doing a regular review.
Something I've noticed with me2, even compared to me3 is that me2 is just so much more cinematic. Like the camera shots are just so cool especially when meeting important characters like Garrus. Meanwhile in me3 so many of the cutscenes the camera is just A and B between shep and whatever NPC without really anything special going on. Really feel like bioware peaked in terms of just making everything feel cool in me2
That's something I never really thought about, but yeah - Shots seem more cinematic in ME2. There's lots of dynamic movement in ME3, probably to make it feel more "hectic" but that could end up making it feel less "cinematic".

We had cheap Shepard clone (aka Ryder from Andromeda) in between. Cheap Shepard clone was flawed, but I still prefer him over Rook. In Ryder's defence, he was a young adult that by accident (his father death) just got into some very important leadership position. He was green and inexperienced. What’s weird is several of Veilguard’s writers (including head writer Trick Weekes) previously wrote for the ME trilogy and wrote great characters like Garrus, Mordin, Tali, Wrex, and Javik.
I wonder if it's a George Lucas type thing. Where they no longer have anyone to combat their ideas and keep them grounded. Or if Weekes just went off the ideological deep end. Very curious
Veilguard was choped multiple times, from Live service to single player, to inclusion of different audience that at the end writers were irrelevant. Mary Kirby as well, she promissed Lucanis as a completely different character. At the end all was choped to make friendship simulator. So I think writers had no influence on it. Weeks is a good writer, I read some books from him and books were good. He wrote Solas and Solas is the only one who has some good dialogue in entire game. Everything else is modern HR therapy crap.
Unfortunately I think it's a symptom of the ten-year development purgatory made worse by the big writer layoffs that happened a bit before release. We had hoped most the game was written by then, and maybe it was and just cut because of how sanitized they wanted to make the game for some reason- the writing is really inconsistent at times (just look at the vibes of the beginning, Solas, Weisshaupt, and the ending in comparison to, say, Taash's companion quest, or look at the inconsistency of Lucanis's character in some situations), so it wouldn't surprise me if something was cut and they hastily wrote something else up to replace it after the writers were gone or with the writers on a crunch or under higher-up scrutiny. I can see the good bones there, it just wasn't executed well. Kinda sad the game as so much potential, even without changing the core of it, and it simply doesn't live up to it. Personally, I still like the game. Not a favorite, but I'm on a second playthrough and have some ideas to write some stuff about it. Hopefully the fanbase can capitalize on those good bones with fanart and fanfic, at least. It's not perfect, but I'll take what I can get.
I've seen some interviews with the VA from mass effect that they had room for improv with the lines. If I remember correctly half or more of Seth Greens joker lines were improvised.
I love the first half of this game. The initial shock of losing Shepard and the Normandy really defines the tone of the game, even if it turns out to be inconsequential. And then all the character introduction, seeing how badass they are all, was amazing to see. These make the whole game, even if the second half is not as amazing as the first half (still good though). The overall story is quite weak though, but the individual character stories, and the freedom we get in this game is making it great.

Having played every game (even Andromeda) upon release, coming back just 4 months ago to complete the whole trilogy was just uncomparable to any game i had played recently. Hope when 4's out we get some good shit.
I've been replaying the entire original ME trilogy in celebration of Exodus eventual release. I'm currently on ME3 and having a great time reliving these games. Dark fantasy, not fantasy in general, needs a win. I'm desperate for a dark fantasy game full of choice and consequence with an intense, well crafted story. Hopefully, after the first Exodus game, Archetype Entertainment will take a crack at the dark fantasy genre or maybe even Casey Hudson and his studio Humanoid Origin after their first game which seems to be sci-fi.
I think it's more likely that Larian will make something akin to that sooner than Archetype tbh, BG3 teeters on being dark fantasy due to the Dark Urge etc, but in terms of tone, yeah they could probably go darker
Such a good game. ME3 is still my favorite of the series (minus the ending of course. Everything else is 10/10). Not touching veilguard until it is at least 50-60% off, and mods have cone out
I was just thinking, while listening to this and taking a piss. It was hardly ever mentioned that Shepard got upgraded, right? I kind of feel like there should have been one moment where he would have died ( again) if not for the upgrades. Specifically I mean. I was thinking this because as I was pissing I was listening to Joker not abandoning the ship. So IN A WAY, he is responsible for Shepard´s death, as he would have fucked off the Normandy already. But what if Joker indirectly causes the reason why Shepard was able to win, because of the implants that somehow does something at a certain point. That would have been great. I think that never happened. Ofc, if he survived, then he wouldn´t have gotten his new crew and super ship... And done those things. So, perhaps it isn´t that important. NO! NOOO! I KNOW NOW! The implants he gets is what enables him to take that teaser breath at the end of ME3! HOLY TERRA I GOT IT NOW!
Yeah it's never really brought up throughout the games, well except for when the Starchild mentions it. I can't really remember any other times tho tbh
In Arrival dlc he also wakes up from sedation thanks to his implants. They keep increasing the dosage but he keeps waking up. Implants made him resistant.
Didn't replay ME2 after Veilguard, but checked if there are any fantasy RPGs I've missed. And there was. Dragon's Dogma. Just search the Griogori's speech (there's a couple), it's absolutely another dimension of writing quality compared to DA:V Sad times.
Dialogue vibe ME2 = R rated action movie ME:Andromeda = Unconfident pup Veilguard = Social Worker at an elementary school To be fair ME2 occasional goes to edgy for edge sake but still the most enjoyable. It’s a fantasy game I don’t need to feel that lack of confidence in my escapism!
Why didn’t you do a N7 day stream… I was really surprised to see that you didn’t do anything for it.. I thought you was my go 2 guy for mass effect… kinda had me worried like you don’t mess with mass effect anymore or something?? Idk what I thought. But glad to see you still with the Mass effect gang!!! Let’s pray next year they give us SOMETHING!!! They better at least… signing out
Trust me, i'm still lurking in the shadows. Unfortunately there wasn't anything super interesting on N7 Day (and i want to stay away from theorizing too much as I've caught flack for that before) but as soon as we learn anything new, i'll cover it :)
I never imagined Mr. Hulthen would do his best to recreate my best friend's Renegade Shep Dick Shepard . I like Mass Effect 2 (I've beaten every game in the Shep trilogy a dozen times or more) but its easily my least favorite Mass Effect game so far while Dragon Age Veilguard is my second favorite Dragon Age so far (Far ahead of II, and slightly ahead of Inquisition but behind Origins/Awakening) There are so many changes between Mass Effect 1 and 2 that I dislike. The only areas I feel 2 is better then 1 are story, some characters, and combat. but they screwed combat up some by going overboard in cutting the weapon inventory. The Heavy Pistols are used by all six classes and Submachines Guns are used by five of the six. Who in their right mind would believe only including two of each in the base game, with one more of both types added by DLC, was adequate? And the base game made things a little more painful because I made my first run as an Engineer which meant those were the only two gun types I could use for a good chunk of the game. I don't like the Heavy Pistols much, and dislike burst fire Submachine Guns. So naturally not only did they make the first Submachine gun in the game burst fire but until the Kasumi DLC came out you couldn't get a full-auto Submachine Gun before the second set of recruitment missions. I think they should have added a third Heavy Pistol and another full-auto Submachine Gun to the base game. Give you the Submachine Gun in the Recruit Archangel mission, and put the Heavy Pistol in one of the second wave recruitment missions. One thing I think Veilguard does much better then this game is it includes the which city do you save choice. Something like that in Mass Effect 2 would have been nice. Instead of the Collectors attacking Horizon they are launching an attack on Horizon and another world at the same time with Cerberus not being sure which the Virmire survivor is on (Whichever world you go to naturally). One world is a farming world that sends food to non-fertile worlds in the region while the other has a smaller population but produces warships, small arms, and military equipment and you have to decide which to save.
The big difference is the writing teams from the current bioware and the team back in 2010. Most people that worked on mass effect probably are not there anymore. Writing in video games currently is in a weird spot.
Renegade ME2 Shepard almost 90s action movie hero, sort of Arnold Schwarzenegger type of character writing is sooo good. Is it a bit cheesy sometimes? Yes, but who cares, edgelord almost murderhobo Shepard is hilarious (that interrupt with "you're working too much" is a pefect example) And yes, when Shepard died in the opening I was like "wtf, do I have to play as a new character now, what is even going on?!"
ME2 shined where DA:TV is severely lacking: clear and varied roleplay options. If DA:TV had a Paragon/Renegade system similar to ME2, I think most of the criticism regarding his writing wouldn't be here.
The thing I really liked about Mass Effect 2 is with your more traditional sequel that has rpg elements you kinda have to suspend disbelief oh why your returning character is starting at level 1. Mass Effect 2 makes perfect sense, Shepherd straight up dies and it takes years to fully bring him back so yea you aren't the bad ass you were at the end of the first game. Add to that the greatly improved combat and improved storytelling absolute makes it a straight up home run.
I wish the video would have compare the two games. I didn't play the latest Dragon Age. I expected from the thumbnail or title it would have been the case 😕
Dude bioware is one of the few games that did well written characters, what am i going to do if they are this bad now? because next game it maybe Mass Effect 4 and...i kinda don't want it if is going to be as bad as Veilguard, i am scared man :"(
Just because the studio is still called bioware doesnt mean its the same thing as back in the day. completely different people work there. theyre trash these days. might aswell call their studio something else.
I really enjoyed watching this video as it really conveys my exact same feelings for what I have played of Veilguard so far (not done yet due to trying to wrap up N7 Day business, which I also failed to meet the deadline for...). But please, MrHulthen; why are you forcing yourself playing without the Unofficial LE2 patch? Maybe its because I'm one of the two main devs of it, but I kept internally screaming at the amount of bugs we fixed which were present through the video 🥹 Unless I misremember, you're no stranger to mods for Mass Effect! Keep up the good work 🤗
ME2 is a great game. But I will always be an ME3 fanboy if I gotta pick a favorite. The dialog and combat are so much better, and the Citadel DLC is what all DLC should be.
Me3 is perfect until the quarian stuff and after it, feel like they couldve done much more and better with thessia and the quarian missions. And then the horrible ending, but i also love me3
If Mass Effect 2 was made by current Bioware: Joker: I won't abandon the Normandy! I can still save her! Shepard: How dare you assume Normandy's pronouns?!

@@MrHulthenIsn't Larian's next game supposed to be sci-fi also?
I don't see why Seth Green CAN'T play Joker in live action. I mean, what else does he have going on right now? That NFT show, LMAO?!
@@Pir-o Oh shit? Goddamn you are right!
I wish they kept with it for ME3... Wasted potential
Didn't replay ME2 after Veilguard, but checked if there are any fantasy RPGs I've missed.
And there was.
Dragon's Dogma.
Just search the Griogori's speech (there's a couple), it's absolutely another dimension of writing quality compared to DA:V
Sad times.
And its still the best. Still has that love at first sight vibe to it.
Oh man, wait for them to ruin the next mass effect....😢
I liked it! Funny! "My blueberry" :)
Mass effect 2 is a timeless classic, no matter how many games I play over the years ME2 will always be held in high regards
well i just start paying me legendary again 10hours in 1 and im happy😇🥰
I just beat the first game an I gotta say I’m mad at myself for not really giving it a chance when I was younger I’m really thinking bout replaying it
@@Grandtemplar305 do it, it is fun🙂
@@TommygunThompson I’m bout to do it again I never been invest in a game since assassin creed
Dialogue vibe
ME2 = R rated action movie
ME:Andromeda = Unconfident pup
Veilguard = Social Worker at an elementary school
To be fair ME2 occasional goes to edgy for edge sake but still the most enjoyable.
I like Mass Effect 2 (I've beaten every game in the Shep trilogy a dozen times or more) but its easily my least favorite Mass Effect game so far while Dragon Age Veilguard is my second favorite Dragon Age so far (Far ahead of II, and slightly ahead of Inquisition but behind Origins/Awakening)
There are so many changes between Mass Effect 1 and 2 that I dislike.
I like the new format
The big difference is the writing teams from the current bioware and the team back in 2010. Most people that worked on mass effect probably are not there anymore. Writing in video games currently is in a weird spot.
Renegade ME2 Shepard almost 90s action movie hero, sort of Arnold Schwarzenegger type of character writing is sooo good. Is it a bit cheesy sometimes? Yes, but who cares, edgelord almost murderhobo Shepard is hilarious (that interrupt with "you're working too much" is a pefect example)
And yes, when Shepard died in the opening I was like "wtf, do I have to play as a new character now, what is even going on?!"
A fellow Mass Effect fan who'd also love to be balls-deep inside Dr. Chocolates? this channel is simply fantastic, you have my utmost respect Sir
ME2 shined where DA:TV is severely lacking: clear and varied roleplay options.
If DA:TV had a Paragon/Renegade system similar to ME2, I think most of the criticism regarding his writing wouldn't be here.
The golden years of Bioware was the first 3 Mass Effect games. I don't think Bioware can get back there at this point.
3:13 - Jeff Green is the best!
Bioware's answer to The Empire Strikes Back.
Mass Effect 5 gonna be for the most MODERN audience that you've (never) seen.
Add to that the greatly improved combat and improved storytelling absolute makes it a straight up home run.
myyy heeeeaaaart, so many memories
I wish the video would have compare the two games. I didn't play the latest Dragon Age. I expected from the thumbnail or title it would have been the case 😕
3:15 ... not going to shit on Seth, but i like the german voice actor for joker even better (he's probably the best of the cast for the german dub)
IT shows it's age... when you get to the citadel, and start the walking oh lord
You Killed Ashley You Monster 😆
The moment when the collector base explodes is epic
No lie VG really made my want to play older BW games soo bad.
Damn do I love Mordin and Garrus.
My GOAT
It's definitely biowares greatest game ever released in my opinion
Keep up the good work 🤗
I guess i'm lazy, else i would've installed it already haha
Liara's armor at the beginning is so cool and wish we were able to equip that armor for her.
As for me same female armor with friendly face (Ashley or Liara) was cheap move for not including them as playable characters...
@@gaming_xp_ua I like Liara's more because of her helmet design and her armors left shoulder piece.
And then the horrible ending, but i also love me3
ME2>ME>>>ME3>>>>>Andromeda
Jacob is not a bad character by any means…. But compared to the star studded cast we get in mass effect I mean.. he kinda pales in comparison
ME2 was BioWare's best game it was basically Cyberpunk before Cyberpunk
Mass effect 2 is still amazing
If Mass Effect 2 was made by current Bioware:
Joker: I won't abandon the Normandy! I can still save her!
Shepard: How dare you assume Normandy's pronouns?!
Oh man, I love ME
"So... I Played Mass Effect 2 in 2024. Also in 2023, 2022, 2021 etc" ^^
Replaying BioWare gold era after Failguard, uh?
Mordin 😭😭😭 My bestest buddy 💔
Mass Effect 2 takes itself serious. Veilguard doesn't.
Why do I feel like prisoner 780....
Oh my, a protagonist you can shape with a personality, can't have that. Perhaps we should agree to memory hole VG and move on...
I platinum-ed the Mass Effect LE this year. ME2 was so hard on insanity, at least in the first half.

"So I played a legendary game after playing a trash game". Damn I wonder if he liked.
Comparing Veilguard to ME2 is crime against humanity. 😅
