Borussia Dortmund appear to have finished their summer business extraordinarily early. So, this video, rather than suggest new players, will investigate Dortmund’s recruitment rationale for those already newly signed; to ask whether these players were sensible transfers.

@@BlitZkrieG988 Hummels could still be considered the best CB in world. At the very least top 5. Süle is not at that level yet. He's a great player with tons of potential. He has it all - talent, size, physicality, tackling, vision - but he still has to hone his skills and become more consistent in order to truly be considered in that very elite category. And that will all come naturally as he gains more experience. He's just not there quite yet.

The defense in the second half of the season was the reason that they lost the title race. They always cracked under pressure and couldn't defend leads. Zagadou and Hakimi were really poor defensively, and Diallo made a fair share of mistakes as well. Akanji was the only one of the young defenders who was pretty consistent. Honestly, Weigl was Dortmund's second best CB behind Akanji last season (and at times was even the best), even though he had never played in that position before. Even Wolf provided more stability as a fill-in RB than the young guys. I'm not saying Wolf is more talented, but he was certainly less error-prone and seemed to have the right mindset.

What a great analysis!! In my opinion, Dortmund exemplifies the concept of "sensible transfer". I couldn't agree more with what you said about Hummels bringing experience to the defensive line, especially to help Zagadou. Domestically speaking, Dortmund have really built a team that can challenge Bayern for the Deutscher Meister. Hell, they already had that team last season, but, well, we all know what happened. It would be great if Hakimi could stay, what a great full back he is, but him staying looks really difficult. Once again, Tifo Football delivering quality content!! Cheers guys!!

    One year later:
    - Schulz: Complete flop. Limited in possession play and could not adapt to playing in back four. If he does not want to become a perpetual benchwarmer, he might be already on his way out.
    - Brandt & Hazard: Good buys with fine albeit not great seasons. Brandt was misused at times but played very well once deployed in a central role.
    - Hummels: Best centre-back in the league in 2019/20.

I really enjoy this series. It gives a comprehensive look at a team without bias or rumours. The only thing I would improve (if it really counts as an improvement) is a variation in teams. For example the teams you've focused on have been big, established teams like Man United and Spurs. Which is understandable as they are the teams that have the most fans. However I'd like to see a variation in teams/leagues. For example, you could do a 'sleeping giant' team like Nottingham Forest or Leeds United. Maybe go for a promoted side like Sheffield United or Aston Villa. Even a team in the French league or Bundesliga like Monaco who have had a very poor season or Union Berlin who have been promoted or perhaps Paderborn after seeing double promotions. I think it would be great and rather interesting to see some smaller teams get a spotlight in this series.

Nice video! As always you guys did a nice job in the analysis :) just some quick notes: Dortmund has not finished their summer transfers, according to Zorc. Also, the team needs a physical central striker who can keep the ball up and be the center of the attack when teams are parking the bus and counter the fast passes of the offense. The team now has only one main striker with the departure of Isak to Real Sociedad, and sometimes it is impossible for Götze or Phillip to fulfill this role.

BVB did good transfers but the real great move would be if they are really capable to keep Jadon Sancho for at least another season! These days it's not that easy for a club like Dortmund to keep great players when Real, Barca and the premier league clubs are interested...!

    • @TheLordoftheRavens

To me, Sancho seems like a very savvy player career-wise. He made the decision to move to the Bundesliga permanently and get a chance to play immediately, rather than rot away in Man City's reserves or on loan somewhere. This is a really unique move for a young English player, and it definitely took guts and keen insight to follow through on it.
Now, he's played his first full season as a regular starter for Dortmund. He was great, but it was only one season so far. I think it's likely that an intelligent player like him stays for at least another season to solidify that talent - continuing to start regularly and proving that he's not just a one-season wonder. He can learn from one of the most skilled attacking midfielders in the world in Marco Reus - a man who could have been a top five player in the world if not for his injuries - and he might just win a Bundesliga title along the way, which would be nice as well. Not to mention Sancho is still a teenager. He has plenty of years left in his career to play for other clubs. He shouldn't make the same mistake that so many young players do and go too big too fast.

    First of all: good overview.
    Little things to add.
Hummels will most likely play as left CB even though he is right footed. This is were BVB see him. Akanji is highly rated by BVB and will most likely play alongside Hummels. He even is team council member.
Zagadou struggles with some things which are almost the same as with Hummels. They are not highly flexible and aren’t top when it comes to turn around fast. Zagadou still is outstanding when he works on his concentration as you said. But will most likely the alternative to Hummel and Balerdi for Akanji (on paper). Mateus Morey arrived who made a great impression at BVB. He could be a surprise this season.

I know Reus hates it, but I think he's gonna be playing up top alot this year in a kind of a "Raumdeuter" role. His passing and link up ability is great there. He's a lethal finisher and it'll save his legs for a long campaign. Likely a midfield combo of Brandt, Hazard, Sancho, Gotze depending on availability, but they'll all switch positions throughout the game. Witsel, Delaney, Dahoud to cover the midfield behind them. Gonna be a great season for Dortmund!

Hey guys, great video! Would appreciate a little more emphasis on risks/critiques of some signings. For example, Schulz is arguably good going forward, but defending could be an issue in a 4 atb lineup. Moreover, Brandt has proven to play well on the 10/8 position, but his performances on the wing have been inconsistent. Finally, Hazard is critizised for his second half of the season... Just a suggestion - I do agree that the signings are great, but there are also some risks to keep in mind also in light of some bad signing in the past: Schürrle, Toljan, Mor etc...

Brandt is my favorite signing of this summer. His versatility will be vital moving forward competing on multiple fronts not mention his price tag

Tifo could you please do one of these on Chelsea, & how they can/ will be forced to utilise the loan army as new signings,
And how they deal with the looming transfer ban, Moving forward with a new coach and a sensible rationale.
    Thanks In advance, Cal.

I'm surprised you didn't include Akanji in your expected team. Surely he and Hummels will take the starting births with Zagadou and Diallo providing cover? Other than that very good video.

Think you also have to look at the current players they have Brandt and Hazard are good and probably worth taking the space of the current players at BVB but Hummels taking game time away from probably the most promising set of young defenders Akanji, Diallo, Zagadou, Balderi isn’t IMO in the long run especially if it causes them to force a move away

    No...
Brandt is a left winger bcs of idiotic coaches...
    Hes an instinctive ten.
He proved it in the u21, olympia and in leverkusen in the second half last year where the idiots finally used him correctly.
Hes a superb assisting/passing player and is most dangerous through the middle.
He lacks the explosion and moves for the wing.
Its an utterly failure to play him there.
