I use a gaming monitor with my macbook pro. I use an AOC with a 144 refresh rate. It was originally meant for my gaming desktop but my macbook eventually took total control.
After using promotion on the iPad and iPhone, I agree that refresh rate is much more important than many Mac users, myself included, have understood. I just hadn't experienced it before. But using a 4k panel with a Mac isn't an optimal experience due to what needs to happen to scale the content to an acceptable size. And 2.5k just isn't sharp enough for me. And so for me personally, I'm waiting for a high refresh, 5k monitor from Apple, if those rumors do indeed come true. And paying more for a monitor is a good investment, IMO. For example, the only reason I still use my late 2015 5k iMac is that I don't want to part with the display, nor do i want to buy a studio display with similar specs -- it just seems like a waste to spend that much for a display that I basically already have with my iMac. So essentially, even though my computer itself is out of date and I want to upgrade, I'm stuck because the monitor option I really want, a high refresh, 5k, Apple-made monitor, just isn't here yet. I know it'll be pricey when it comes, but it'll be worth it. Most of us keep our displays and TVs far longer than we keep other tech. So an argument can be made that overspending on a monitor to kind of future proof yourself is smarter than doing the same with a computer. Anyway, this was an enjoyable, informative video. But i'm still on the lookout for the perfect monitor for a Mac. When that comes, then I will buy a new computer to go along with it.
A 5K and 120Hz monitor would be awesome, but the problem is the amount of data that needs to be transmitted is astronomical. In this video I was doing 4K 144Hz and that is already over 40GB/s, which is about the maximum the thunderbolt ports on the MacBook can output. I think a display like that might be quite a few more years, unless Apple can figure something out.
Apple sucks on scaling because they are always different 💅🏾 so when you get a 4K a 27 is great but we need to be careful because of the density, there is a video about that by a professional graphic developer about that and why he switch from tru 4K to 1440p
as someone who edits a LOT of slow motion footage, having a high refresh rate monitor is super important when reviewing b-roll. Complete night and day when I need to watch those 120fps/120p videos. Honestly, if I edited normal shows and videos, I wouldn't have gotten my 165hz and 240hz monitors.
BE VERY CAREFUL SWITCHING TO 30HZ! I switched in clamshell mode. Monitor displayed an error message saying it wasn't compatible with that refresh rate. I had to install a remote desk manager on my MacBook and an iPad to be able to SEE the desktop in clamshell mode so I could switch the settings for the external Dell monitor back to 60hz.
Gaming monitors generally have great refresh rate and that's a big deal when scrolling webpages and work content all day. Reduces headaches from flicker 👍😀
@@vivelafrance8400 because usually 4k 144hz monitors arent 22-24in where they would have 200+ PPI. At 27in they are already 165 PPI which is pretty bad and some monitors take it up to 32in.
I'm gonna say it. Don't buy a gaming monitor for a Mac. Because macos with high refresh rate is just on another level. you will never be able to go back to 60hz ever again, if you've tried either 144hz or promotion for just once. So yeah, don't buy the new m1max MacBook either. Stay away from them and enjoy your 60hz monitor and the Intel chip with the loudest fan noise. Good luck.
I just find it so weird that people don’t find high refresh more of a requirement. It must be that people haven’t tried it or something because I constantly hear “you don’t need high refresh for productivity tasks”. I edit a ton of video editing and I just can’t go back to lower refresh rates because it just is too slow and unresponsive.

Most docks support limited refresh rates (60 Hz). CalDigit TS3 Plus: [DUAL 4K EXTENDED DISPLAYS]: Connect up to two 4K@60Hz (4096 x 2160 30-bit color) monitors via DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C port, OR a Single 5K@60Hz display can be supported via the Thunderbolt 3 port. (***DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI/VGA adapter / cable must be an ACTIVE type. So there is no way to have an external monitor using a dock with 144 Hz. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Great video we have a similar setup with the dual creator MacBook setup and a gaming PC. I also find that if you can make a video look good on a gamer monitor (which usually has worse colour) you can make it look good on anything.
I definitely would. The screen displays gorgeous colors with stunning accuracy, at crisp quad HD resolutions. I'd like to find and play flight simulators with it. Call of Duty and "ofcourse" Mortal Kombat. It's hard to not be a gaming addict when you have the right tools(devices) at your disposal.
Thanks for making this video... I tried to find out how to connect a 144 hertz montitor to a mac, and couldnt find anything. This video came at the right time!
I love the 144Hz but I hate the pixel density from 3440x1440 21:9 and the lag of HiDPI support from Apple. And the most annoying thing is no screen brightness control straight from the keyboard. So buy monitor that support Apple ecosystem. It will helps a lot with your mental health.
I did the same I got eh M32U for my M1 Max and it works amazingly well. The PC display industry is in a bad place right now. Most of the features you want at a decent price are in the gaming monitors, however if you want a nice professional monitor with the features you get on a gaming one you are looking at much higher prices and most of the time compromises. I was looking at the Dell U3223, not only does that monitor cost more than than the M32U but it also is only a 60hz panel. The M32U doesn't have the same level of color accuracy, but for my purposes its more than fine. The Apple Studio Display was a non-starter as its expensive and limited for my needs.
I am looking into this and its cheaper than Eve (which is impossible to get one shipped), and an extra KVM feature thats great for those owning both M1 and a PC Gaming rig.
4K at 120/144 Hz from an M1? (Air and Mac Mini) Is it really possible via USB-C to DP? Apple always says: only 60Hz. I'm not talking about the Max M1 Pro, just the M1.
Yes, it is. I own a MacBook Air M1 and use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable with my LG monitor, the 34-inch 3440x1440 at 160Hz, and it works seamlessly with no issues.
Comparing the change between 120 fps and 60 fps with the change between 60 fps and 30 fps is like comparing changing from sleeping 8 hours to 16 with changing from 4 hours and 8 hours. This is not a situation of "the more the better", this is a situation where after some point, it just doesn't make sense to add more.
As a gamer and iOS developer yes, I 1000% concur… The higher refresh rate on regular desktop usage is definitely noticeable and appreciated. Going back to 60Hz (even if it’s some super sharp 5K res) feels like a massive downgrade. I do all my Mac work on the same 3440x1440p ultrawide monitor where I also game on my PC
The problem with monitors for mac is the resolution and text sharpness. Hence the Apple branded monitors are 5K. Because of the way they scale the image to make text look sharper. Some monitors don't seem to do hiDPI well or not compatible. It's more noticeable on some monitors more than others. But definitely do your research before committing to gaming monitor.
This convinced me that I'm blind. I'm using high refresh phone, iPad pros MacbooB pros next to a 60Hz monitor and I DON'T see it! This feels bad as a tech enthusiast but my wallet is happy
I have a very similar setup but I'm wondering, how do you connect the pc to monitor + peripherals with just one cable? Does that require your PC to have thunderbolt as well? Would love to see a full video on the setup
Hey man I had this idea and wondered why no one did it, and if its wrong to pair a high refresh rate panel with a mac. But after seeing this I defintely will, also love your channel keep up the good work!
Been trying to find a 4K monitor that can maximize the 120hz of our Macbook Pro14. Plus you taught what specific cables to use! Nice! Kudos! Thank you!
I use two gaming monitors (Gigabyte M27Q 144hz, 1ms) with my macbook m1 pro with all three screens at 120hz, and those monitors also give me 110ppi which is perfect for the Mac ecosystem (for external devices it's either 110ppi or 220ppi so you don't force the Macbook to rescale). Totally recommended.
To add another layer of complexity, if you’re a photo/video editor, what’s the colour % ratings for each monitor? It’s great having fast response but colour representation is more important for creators 😎
Even I use a Benq Mobiuz monitor with my MacBook Air. For colour sensitive work I use my mac display anyway so the monitor I have it connected to my mac and PC.
I have a stigma that higher refresh rate displays have Low pixel densities. I’m sure that’s less true now than it was a few years ago, so I need to rethink that. I think it’s good to advertise refresh rate but more importantly pixel density. So a user can decide where they find the combinations optimal. A 180 ppi display that’s 120htz is nice but not as common.
If you use your Mac for productivity, you’ll likely appreciate the a high pixel density display more than a high refresh rate display. A 5K display has literally twice the pixel density of a 1440p display. And you will be able the see the difference if you have normal vision.
Hi, I am planning to buy a 4k monitor for my Macbook pro 14, and PS5 and Xbox series X. There are a lot of information out there about performance issues (ram, gpu usage etc) regarding to scaling on macbook pro. I am not video editing but coding. I am planning to buy LG 27GP950-B or Dell 3223Q. Some people say 4k is best for 32 inch, not good for 27. I am really confused a lot. This video makes me clear to go with gaming laptop for sure. For productivity and gaming, do you suggest 32 4k or 27 4k or 27 1440p? Thanks for the video.
Nice video! How did you get the colors good on the external monitor? Feels like all monitors to which I connect my Macbook 16" display very poor colors..
I subscribed as soon as a heard that beautiful Aussie accent. How about the Hidpi compatibility? Some monitors don't have that options when connected to MacOs. I'm thinking of buying a mac mini and a gaming monitor. Cheers
Hello, Awesome video. I went ahead and purchased a gigabyte M32U which has a high refresh rate. I also have a caldigit TS4. Just wondering what is the best connection to the caldigit and the monitor in order to get 4K and high refresh rate? Usbc to display port? Display to display? Many thanks
I Do have a Samsung Odyssey G7 and trust me.. even though it’s really great for gaming.. it’s never going to match a Dell U3223QE for browsing experience, text clarity and Color accuracy. And of course the quality of the display especially in video watching. Choose your monitor based on you’re priority carefully. My suggestion - have two different setups (I know one can’t afford space or price) but hear me out.. for gaming yeah.. you need an expensive setup but not for browsing and regular pc usage like movie watching etc… for that you could have a cleaner setup … IF POSSIBLE… definitely have two setups
there should be a 32 or 40 inch monitor with high text clearity like the Dell on one Hand and 120hz on the other. Oh wait, there is actually one out there: the LG 32GQ950-B. only 32 inch. but two of them should be able to compensate the lack of space.
Hey, I totally agree on using a gaming monitor with a MacBook, but I had a BIG issue with an Alienware which was everything but sharp when using it with my MacBook M1 Max. Now I am afraid of buying a monitor which may be 120/144 hz if it's not thunderbolt. So I feel the number of monitors that are really available is really limited?

I am looking to clean up my desk and looking to go down to ONE larger monitor. Would a larger (say 34”) be better?
I am the same type of mac user. I would rather have a 1080p 144hz montior instead of a 5K 60hz monitor. I used to be a gamer with a gaming pc with my 144hz monitor and when i switched to the macbook pro 14 inch i use it with my monitor and feel no different. once you are used to high refresh rates you cant go back

Great content but we face a very big hurdle: STAFF AT THE ELECTRONICS STORE. Most of the time if not every time, staff even at an official Dell shop seem quite incompetent on technicalities like refresh rate, connectivity, DPI and sRGB. They just read off general specifications found on the public website and if there is no model on display, they will say things like "that display is slightly better" without being able to explain why although on paper the DPI is the same, leaving me to imagine the reasons why. In the end, I go for brand recognition and reputation. BenQ is the brand for me.... but it is difficult to test out the higher spec'ed models cos the seller rarely hold stock for that.
Late to comment, but I use a 144Hz 1080p monitor for my PC and also use it to extend/mirror my work MacBook Pro. Only downside I find is that I use DisplayPort from the PC to the monitor, as well as from the MacBook - meaning I need to swap the cable every time I change device. Not a huge issue, I just worry about the wear on the port on the monitor. I've tried using a USB C to HDMI instead of the USB C to DP from the MacBook - and the HDMI looks really washed out colour-wise compared to the DP cable. Looking online, I see others have the opposite, which is odd. I think it's something to do with the YCbCr instead of RGB... can't go fiddling with the work Mac though 🙈
@@caiuscript Scaling seems fine? It’s not the perfect match but I think I’m over 2 years in to this combo now and I’m used to it 😅 I did manage to force the YCbCr stuff though eventually. Hi guys, I actually reached out to you regarding the glossy version of this monitor and doing a comparison video. Is this something that's possible?
I use a gaming monitor with my macbook pro. I use an AOC with a 144 refresh rate. It was originally meant for my gaming desktop but my macbook eventually took total control.
Haha Mac os is so satisfying. The only reason i still have my windows pc is for gaming.
@@glitchinthematrix9306 indeed it is, until I got my macbook I was always anti Apple. Still hate the iPhone but have one....
I have a 16 inch MacBook Pro 2019 i7 9750h and 5300m will it work with 144hz Benz monitor ? I mean does it support 144 hz ?
@@gigachad3861 i dont know, you would have to look it up, I have the newest version with the M1 Max.
I had to install a remote desk manager on my MacBook and an iPad to be able to SEE the desktop in clamshell mode so I could switch the settings for the external Dell monitor back to 60hz.
yesterday i have this problem too. i don’t know how to fix it so i reset my MacBook and use time machine to recovery it.
Gaming monitors generally have great refresh rate and that's a big deal when scrolling webpages and work content all day. Reduces headaches from flicker 👍😀
I have more trouble with low pixel dense monitors 😅
@@chidorirasenganz How is 4K 144Hz low pixel density?
@@vivelafrance84004k is low indeed since you can't make any kind of usable scaling with it that would not look fuzzy.
@@vivelafrance8400 because usually 4k 144hz monitors arent 22-24in where they would have 200+ PPI. At 27in they are already 165 PPI which is pretty bad and some monitors take it up to 32in.
@@Im_too_old_for_this_shit That's due to macos scaling. Don't blame the hardware for a limitations of sofware.
120+hz is also less straining for the eyes than 60hz. Headaches and for some even seizures are also more common with lower refresh rates.
why?
Great video!

You can control brightness from your keyboard, you just need app like lunar , work with almost all monitors.
@@robertkremen Thank you so much for this. Thank you for educating me. Never thought such software exist.

how you don’t have more subscribers is really baffling, amazing video
Instant "like" for saying the key thing right away)) Will watch the rest )
I got the Eve Spectrum as well and works amazing with what Xbox Series X. I’d say it’s relatively cheap for this combo.
Stop recommending scam monitors, shut up.
@@re4796the monitor itself is great the company isn’t great tho
Apple has been all out on ProMotion. But if you have the Mac mini or Mac Studio you have to choose a display. And these monitors do go well
This convinced me that I'm blind. I'm using high refresh phone, iPad pros MacbooB pros next to a 60Hz monitor and I DON'T see it!

I also used a gaming monitor with my Mac before I switched back to my Chromebook. Loved the animations at 114 fps (hz) instead of the 60 fps (hz)

To add another layer of complexity, if you’re a photo/video editor, what’s the colour % ratings for each monitor? It’s great having fast response but colour representation is more important for creators 😎
The scaling factor on 4K is problematic.
This video is amazing! The content is always so engaging.
I prefer the 27" 5K before all. It's so sharp.
Even I use a Benq Mobiuz monitor with my MacBook Air. For colour sensitive work I use my mac display anyway so the monitor I have it connected to my mac and PC.
Apple software just feels so nice and fluid with high refresh rates
Yes,It is really nice for switching application, scolling webpage under 144hz...
Great video mate.
If you use your Mac for productivity, you’ll likely appreciate the a high pixel density display more than a high refresh rate display. A 5K display has literally twice the pixel density of a 1440p display. And you will be able the see the difference if you have normal vision.
I disagree. 1440p is already a lot of pixels. The difference between 60hz and 120hz is a lot more noticeable then another uptick on pixel count.
One monitor setup video please. I've been looking into this recently.
What would you recommend for a Macbook M1 Pro in 2024?

Cheers
Hello,
Awesome video.

I dont game STRICTLY Business Productivity (Excel, Word etc. but I am stuck having to use both my MAC Pro 14” AND a Windows 10 Laptop for Work. I am looking to clean up my desk and looking to go down to ONE larger monitor. Would a larger (say 34”) be better?
I use an Aorus 43" 4K 144HZ screen and it is the best. I have a set up where I can mount it to the wall and it is great for productivity and gaming.

I really hate dealing with cables, they render everything stuck! As someone who spends the majority of their day on a computer, I really like to move around. You imagine how moving and cables don't really go together. Specially with Apple genius idea of making a dongle almost mandatory to use their laptops.

How's the scaling? People usually mention theirs 1440p/4k monitors, but I couldn't find any review about a 1080p monitor
