- Welcome back to another installment in my (unofficial) Deluge video manual, a series where I show you all I know about using the Synthstrom Deluge (firmware version 4.0). In this video we're going to focus on the effects engine, and also talk a bit about the modulation matrix. There's lots of fun to be had here, so come and explore some fun effects!

I'm thinking of buying the Deluge soon as I get back into music making. Been watching this series to learn how it works and get a feel for it before buying. I really appreciate the extra effort you took to put motion graphics on screen to visualize the effects. It really helped and improved my understanding of things I kind of learned years ago by playing around with Ableton and Reason a long time ago. I'll keep watching. Thank you!

I am neither a musician, nor an engineer. That's a lot to unpack for me, but as i'm getting slowly through your videos (i'm watch every section at least twice before my brain starts getting it) things are starting to make more sense. It gives me hope, maybe it won't take me a year to learn how to use the Deluge xD
I used to jam with a Korg EMX-1 over 20 years ago and I found myself missing it quite often. So i went on a lookout on the internet and i just couldn't find a groovebox that get me excited.... Elektron's gear was pretty close, but they purposely create "incomplete" boxes so that you have to buy multiple of them to be set... I don't want to be one of the people who give them a reason to keep doing so. Along with a 64 steps limitation per pattern, few tracks to work with, the laggy menu navigation, the cheap plastics buttons whose black paint wears off easily...
Then i found out about the Deluge somewhere in an Elektron's forum. Oh my, I'm so glad i did, i feel like the lucky guy who found a magical secret instrument after hours of digging ^^
So glad to hear these vids are helping you. Stick with it! I'm sure you'll pick the Deluge up quick enough :) I've never tried an elektron box, but I have watched and read up a lot about them. Part of the reason I never got one was because of what you've said - incomplete boxes with weird limitations. I knew that if I got one, I'd eventually get another, and another.. And if I'm going to spend that kind of money I'd rather drop it on Eurorack. I think there's something to be said about their workflow though, as a lot of people seem to really love working within those limitations. From what I've heard their effects do sound a bit better than the ones on the Deluge. After all these years, the only one I'm still slightly interested in is the octotrack, but I'm in no rush to get one. I'm very happy with what the Deluge offers and its workflow just seems to click a lot better with me.

I'm the happy owner of a Deluge since it came out.
Ive stopped using it for a couple of years... And getting back to it after all the updates is difficult.

Great stuff! Love the added graphics for the filters, ADSR and so on. Hope to see more of this in the future (although it certainly doesn't make the production of the videos any easier ^^). In regards to structure and overall quality, your tutorials are (at least for me) the best i have seen so far. Therefore thanks for your efforts.
Thanks so much! Yeah some of those graphics took a bit. The next few videos are ready to go, but they don't have any graphics like this, just the shortcuts. That said, the graphics will make a return when we get up to the synthesis videos ;)

A couple of things I forgot to mention - Pressing the sidechain encoder in allows you to switch between a fast or slow sidechain. It's basically just toggling between to release presets for the sidechain trigger.
Another thing I didn't demonstrate correctly was modulating LFO 2 with LFO 1. At 36:23, I show that by pressing the select knob in and selecting LFO 1, you can modulate LFO 2 with LFO 1 (after selecting a parameter to be modulated by LFO. In this case, we used the filter). This is INCORRECT. What that is actually doing is using LFO 1 to modulate the level of influence LFO 2 is having over the selected parameter (in this case - the filter). This is pretty useful in it's own right, but that's not what I was trying to show.
The CORRECT way to modulate LFO 2 with LFO 1 is by selecting LFO 2 in the bottom row of bads, and then selecting LFO 1 in the modulation sources. This will then use LFO 1 to modulate the rate of LFO 2. I'm really kicking myself for messing this up, but I'll try and mention it in an upcoming video somewhere. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I believe the symbol between the LFO pads is actually for delete/backspace, not to do with the lfos modulating each other. Not that it really matters

The modulation sources added with the 2 envelopes and LFOs are still requiring some efforts from my brain to process but I'm sure I just need time and practice with it.

I highly recommend looking at the table in the actual Deluge manual in the modulation section, as it gives a really good birds-eye-view of what can and cannot be modulated. @@TheLordTimi Ah I see. Well, just keep in mind that there are a few things in the modulation section that are explained throughout the synth section, and whatever is left out will be included in a separate series called The Deluge Workflow Guide, which I'll be working on after this.

One thing that is a bit confusing with the gold knobs is the secondary functions. Like you showed with Delay Type or Reverb Type, you can click the gold knobs to cycle through. But you can ONLY have one of those applied. For instance, if you select a Big reverb, then it is no longer Small.
However, with the filter/EQ, that is not the case. If you are on Low Pass and make adjustments, and then switch to EQ, your Low Pass adjustments stay.
I hope that makes sense. It's tricky to figure out which gold knobs allow you to set a value, and then change the parameter while keeping the previous value. Versus the knobs that will supersede whichever value you had with what you select.
That's a fair point, but in practice I think it becomes a lot easier to get your head around. Filters and EQ are mainly used for sculpting the sound, whereas thinks like reverb are effecting the sound. The reverb is just toggling between 3 different presets, and I'd you look at the front panel you can see the reverb settings all fall under the one effect. The filters and EQ on the other hand are printed as separate effects in their own rows, so they're going to effect one another.
I guess you should just keep in mind that the gold knobs are just quick shortcuts to some of the parameters printed on the front panel. You can overwrite the completely and set them up however you want, just like the last few custom knobs too, so make them behave how you want :)
@@RSKT_music Agree it all makes sense in practice. Also, I did NOT know you could assign different params to any of the gold knob functions. That's awesome!
@@idrumgood Yeah dude! Those labels are just the defaults, so can fill them all up with whatever you like, which is great for sounds with heavy modulation. One of my favourite things to do is to map the arpeggiator rate to an LFO, so that twisting a knob can make the sound slooowly slide in and out of tempo. Gives a really cool effect.
Hello! Can you sidechain with something else than the kick? If you sidechain multiple tracks, which is going to have priority and which is going to duck? Or is it basicly only for making pumping effect with a kick and a synth?

You can send whatever you like to the sidechain, and even change the a mount of influence it has over the sidechain. You don't just have to use it for ducking! If you have a look on Synthstrom official TH-cam channel and search for their side chaining video, they show you a bunch of super cool sound design things you can do when using the sidechain unconventionally. Definately worth checking out :)
Have you gone over sampling yet?
Not yet. Sampling is coming up though and will be video number 7 in this series. Got a couple of other things to go over first. Basically, I'm trying to get all of the core functionality out of the way before getting into making your own sounds (sampling, audio tracks, and synthesis).
If you know how to reverese a single shot sample with automation let me know. I haven't figured out how to do it.
Hmm, I'll have to sus that out. I'm away for work today but will try and have a look when I get home. Only thing that comes to my head is the resample the single shot once you've reversed it, load it back in and then apply the automation again. Hope that's of some help for now at least :)
