- Welcome back to another episode of The (unofficial) Deluge Video Manual, where I'll be showing you all I know about using the Synthstrom Deluge (firmware version 4.0). In this video, we'll be taking a closer look at one of the most powerful features of the Deluge - the arranger view.
Sorry for any "choppy editing" on this one, my tics were acting up while I was shooting this video.. I also keep on referring to arranger view as song view from time to time, but I hope it's not too distracting.

No worries! The arranger view is possibly the most underrated feature of the Deluge IMO. Super useful for performance too!
I know the Deluge quite well, but this had some tricks up its sleeve. Keep the workflow video coming, its much appreciated.

No problem! The new deluge series is on its way, but I'm about to send it back for the refit, so figured I'd wait until it's back before I start filming.
This has been one of the most useful quick learning video lessons on the Deluge I’ve found. I’ve had mine since 2018 at v1.4 and had updated to 3 then put it aside for awhile while I bought guitar stuff. I just got mine back from NZ with OLED retrofit, new pads, chassis, etc and put 4.1.4 on it but am woefully behind on features and forgot most of what I knew so I’m going through the series. Excellent work! Thanks.

I really should start using the arranger view as it seems really powerful. I tend to just jam on song mode. Awesome tutorial!

I did see your previous comment come through in my inbox, but looks like you removed it. I was going to point out that this is the 6th video in a series, so the stuff I skipped over was demonstrated in each of the previous videos. Thanks so much for the kind words, and I'm stoked you're enjoying it all so far! As for the number, I'm not all that surprised tbh. I have a second (wayyy more popular) art channel with about 5.5k subscribers. I started my music channel at the same time, but I've really only just started to focus on it a bit more this year. So I guess in the eyes of the algorithm, I've only just started. Throw in the fact that the Deluge is a pretty niche instrument, and I think numbers like these make sense. I'm happy though! I feel like there aren't enough Deluge tutorials out there, and I'm hoping this might help convince people to buy one if they haven't already. Hopefully when I eventually make Ableton videos and vids on other gear the numbers may pick up a bit. Anyways, I'm rambling now haha. Thankyou for watching :)

@@ThePrehistoricWars fingers crossed they do. I've still got a little.bit of Deluge content to have on here, but I'll be jumping into some Ableton, Zoia, and maybe a tiny bit of modular eventually. So hopefully it won't be too neiche for much longer :)

@@ThePrehistoricWars haha, it's pretty great! You'll probably see it pop up again later in this series. I would probably recomend getting the Zoia Euroburo to pair with the deluge though, so much so that I'm considering getting on in the future. I love the pedal format for my guitar, but I think the desktop format would work a bit better, what with the CV controls and all.
Your videos are awesome, thank you! 🙏Something you're not touching on in your video, is whether it's possible to change the parameters (e.g. level, reverb etc) for an entire row (not just for a section)? Say you want to mix the levels of your 'tracks' / rows? Right now it looks like you have to change every single section individually... Thank you again for any tip!
Hey there - I am SO sorry for the late reply, I only just saw this. I did a test and you're right; you have to edit each clip instance separately. Trying to use the audition pad will only affect the last clip you had selected, which is a bit of a pain. If you wanted to do that (and this would be a pain too), you would want to save a new copy of your song file and then record audio track versions of each one of your tracks. Then you'd be able to mix the stems on the Deluge, or export them for mixing in Ableton.
@@RSKT_music Hey man, don't be sorry! You're not the helpdesk for Deluge😉! Thank you for your workaround suggestion! That made me think (to avoid using a computer) that I can solo and resample (REC+PLAY) the entire row I want to mix then reload the sample in a fresh audio track in Arranger (still in the same song). Then the parameters (pan, level, reverb) work for the entire stem! A bit of a pain indeed but I don't have to do that on every track of the song either... Thanks again!
These videos are great. New Deluge owner here. Is there a way to follow the play head in clip view or just arranger view? It seems like a limitation to me when building clips.
Welcome! Unfortunately I don't think you can, I think that's only for arranger view :/
Hello and thank you for these videos, a mammoth project very well implemented, really helping me get back into the Deluge after a couple of years without it (it broke - MIDI only for a while - and it's now away being repaired, lost job and no spare cash for a while...).
I've a question if you don't mind - on this video when you recorded automation for one track's reverb level in arranger mode, it showed up as a white section on its own row (from 27:05), but what shows on the grid if you tap its tail instead of holding your finger down? I'd expect the automation data to show visually as a rough wiggly line across the pads (like when viewing waveforms) but I suspect it doesn't, but will see if it's on the Deluge 'to do' list and add a +1, also maybe using different colours for different automations on the same channel. It's been a while so I might have missed something in a firmware update, but back then I wasn't happy with automation editing and would like to know your thoughts cheers :)
Hey man, glad you're able to get the Deluge back in your hands again soon! In regards to the white clip - The clip is white because when live performing in song view I held the clip down and changed the reverb amount. When we jump to arranger view, the clip has turned white because we made unique changes. The only way to "see" the automation is to hold the tail of the clip down and look at the reverb amount (4 orange lights) going up and down. The only other way to see automation on the Deluge is to have the parameter selected and watch the screen for any change in values. It would be nice if a firmware update allows us to see automation in more detail (like the Squarp Hapax does), but it is what it is. A lot of things like automation, mixing, envelopes, etc. on the Deluge are all about using your ear, and it's made me realise I don't need to be that surgical when making music :)
@@RSKT_music Wow, thanks for the quick reply :) I did suspect that was the case and again cheers for going out of your way to answer. I watched Loopop's Hapax video and sure enough its automation function does exactly what I'd like on the Deluge. I'd use it for tweaking automation rather than creating it as the gold knobs can't do specific shapes and jumps (maybe reducing the BPM for recording precise automation then back to intended tempo?).
Sooooo hopefully someone in the open source group is onto it. But in the meantime I've enough to (re)learn once it gets back, never mind making music on it heh. Peace :)
@@originalsynth for sure man. Keep in mind that you can actually emulate this on the Deluge to an extent. It's a little tedious at first, but you get the hang of it really quick. Let's say you're making a bass sequence and you want to use the grid to automate the filter opening.
Create your sequence. Then, go an octave up and place a note on the first step. Change the velocity of this note to zero. Every note you put down after this will also be zero. Change this first notes filter cutoff so it's low. Place a note next to it and open the filter slowly, and then keep adding more notes and slowly open the filter each time. Every note you put down will copy the velocity and effect parameter of the last, so you can get some really zany control over your automation. If you want to change the notes in your actual sequence (the ones at full velocity), you'll have to put a note down and change your velocity back to 64, otherwise you won't hear it. I hope that makes sense.
This is particularly useful if you have a long, droning note, and you want to have more control over the automation. If it sounds a bit aliased, zoom in and draw your automation that way. You can use things like cross-screen to make it easier to spread over your whole sequence, and the effect will be smoother.
I plan on covering this when I actually get around to making the Deluge Workflow Guide someday, but I hope this points you in the right direction for now. It's essentially a useful way of having automation lanes appear on the grid above your sequences.

I may have missed it, but let's say I'm in arranger mode and I have a synth lead that i want to change up. I already made the next part by going to song mode and holding the row the lead is on, while pressing a blank row, then altering the lead notes. However, when I go back into arranger mode, I can't seem to find the new part anywhere. Is it because it's a modified version of the earlier lead? I have 8 parts in song mode, but can only play 6 of them in arranger mode.
You're on the right track! If you duplicated the lead, then it will be in a different section. So lets say lead A is blue, and lead B is pink. Back in arranger mode, find your lead track. Press and hold down on the start of the clip (should be the brightest). While holding, turn the select knob. You will be able to select between blue (lead A), pink (lead B), or white (which will make a blank clip for you to work with). Hope that help! Let me know if you have any more issues with it :)

Sorry for the question not related to this section but can Deluge use samples in .aif format?
All good! The manual says the Deluge support .WAV or .AIFF files. I've never used AIFF, so can't confirm past that to be honest.
