the irony is that I came here to learn how to get the scratches off my watch but after listening to TGV's view on it I don't want to get them off anymore.
When I got my first scratch on my sub, I put it in the watch display for a week. My mother said watches are meant to be worn, so now it's in my rotation twice a week. No more worrying, it definitely adds character. Great vid TGV!
I like when the glass sits lower; it means that the glass is protected from scratches. I've often wondered why most watches have the glass raised as it seems counter-intuitive to me.
mkygod if its high grade saphire then it can stand more than the bezel unless the bezel is titanium or ceramic but the saphire is still more durable if its quality
A sapphire crystal lower than the bezel is fine as long as the bezel can handle abuse. I have a Mako USA and recently replaced the damaged bezel and insert with Yobokies parts. I highly recommend this mod on this watch.
So I scratched my Tissot within just few days of buying it and it was driving me crazy. Every time I checked time I concentrated more on that scratches then it hit me, I was focusing more on the scratches and less on checking time. I felt bad for the watch and after that day it never bothered me anymore. I know it sounds weird. Yeah I felt bad for the watch 😂😂
I know exactly that feeling, it feels like suddenly the watch is worth nothing anymore ... It gets better with time, I still have to battle with it though lol
Same here. Just got a seamaster with a chrome bezel which of course attracts scratches really easily. Like he says, at the end of the day they’re tools. Sure it’s nice to own a beautifully made one, which is why I got my Omega, but at the end of the day it’s the memories you associate with the watch that is valuable, not the watch itself. :)
Too bad I don't remember how any of the scratches came to be on my watches. New scratches and scruffs just appear every morning after a nights drinking.
I used to get crazy to prevent scratches, nowadays i am trying to look other way if there is a scratch one the watch. Once i saw an old fella with an old citizen watch which has excessive wear nearly preventing reading the dial, he said using his watch nearly 40 years without service and scratches never annoyed him. Thanks for quality uploads!
So inspiring man, exactly how I feel about scratches and even stains on clothes, sometimes these are there because of someone u love. So it reminds about it, exactly like u said.
I rarely write a comment but I've been watching ur videos technically since u started ur channel and I tell u that u r doing a great job stay strong cause ur job it's OUTSTANDING. Thanks.
I got a bit upset today when putting my new Lorier onto a nato. The spring bar scratched the underside of the lugs but now I'm quite relieved if anything because now I'm not scared to wear it.
What you said about scars is so true. I have a massive scar on my (bald) head from a craniotomy, and initially I used to wear hats to hide it but eventually I stopped and now I just see it as a part of me. And the same goes for my watches. I clean them but I won't polish them. I got all of my watches new/unworn so every scratch is my doing, and once I'm gone and my kids get them they'll know all of those imperfections are because of their dad wearing those watches.
1:58 best answer ever! Thank you so much, you made me feel so good right now, after scratching my skeleton Bulova on the bezel which I love so much! Salutes from Romania! P.S. TGV you're the watch master!
Can a fibreglass pen be used to remove scratches from a highly polished, hard to reach, narrow watch surface? What can I do for this? Please let me know. Thank you. Pete :”)
Wearing my late grandfather watch, he passed away slightly less than 2 months ago. Hurts to see the scratch, but I guess it's how he left it. I have mixed feelings bout the scratch Edit: Damn, okay now I don't mind the scratch, it's a scratch that's witnessed my grandpa's life. The ticking and the scratch just keeps the memories of him alive. Thanks TGV
Hi TGV, I've never worn a watch and I finally decided to pull the pin on the Mako as being my first! I've spent a LOT of time watching your videos -- thanks for everything you do, it was very very helpful.
I got the Mako USA in Blue. I have to say wearing it in this surprise warm weather we have had has really made my week. The light reflects of it beautifully.
Long time fan of the channel - the Orient Mako USA is my first automatic watch and I agree it's a great piece. I was disappointed that the stainless steel bracelet was too tight for my wrist and Orient isn't selling additional links. That said, I put mine on a rubber deployment strap and it works beautifully. The inside of the bezel does have some minor scratches from where it has caught on things, but for the money I am still very happy. Keep up the great work TGV!
Simichrome metal polish paste works quite well also for deeper scratches you could try 0000 or 00000 steel wool. rather than the scotch brite a dremel will polish wheel could be helpful as well.
I liked the analogy of a worn out beat up body with that of a well loved watch, and the saying "a life well lived". As usual TGV an enlightening video with many great lessons to be learned. Thanks for your hard work. Cheers Paul
Can a fibreglass pen be used to remove scratches from a highly polished, narrow watch surface? The tiny, multiple scratches effect the circular shine at the edge of the dial which is stainless steel. What can I do for this? Please let me know if something can be done. Thanks ahead. Pete :”)
hi, may i ask because the caseback of my seiko 5 have a single deep scratch though it's not noticeable since it is on the caseback, do you think it can be repaired? and how much do you think it will cost? just wondering if you have any idea :)
Marc, another wonderful Video! I have several Dress Watches that I want to lightly Polish - but not “over polish”. I also have several Titanium Cases and the 2 Tone World Timer is one of my Favorite Watches and has some scratches. Thank You so much!!
TGV, Scotch blue painters masking tape would probably be the best choice. It stick well, bleeds less and removes without leaving adhesive residue. I think you will agree. Best wishes for 2021!
looking for a commercial i just watched, and I can't find it! help pweeease? It's a watch ad. it has a split screen effect with mostly black and gold colors. i thought it was piaget but can't seem to find it. anyone please help? going crazy!!!
Always good and interesting videos Sir. When removing scratches and also in producing satin finishes I can recommend the 4-in-1 nail buffing pads IF you use the correct face each time and don't get them mixed up. Perfect also for deeper scratches before finishing with polish, taking scratches from acrylic crystals etc. I've had a few odd looks from store assistants when buying them but hey, have confidence! Because the buffing sticks are quite firm there is less danger of taking the edges off the watch case. Re the Orient Mako USA - looks like a good improvement and now looks less like the Longines HydroConquest but I wish they would remove that carbuncle of the quick-set button. (I also wish they would begin distribution outside USA)
The The green stuff on the sponge is Scotch Brite or a generic version. I used to use it for finishing or even adding a brushed look to some metals when I was a metal fabricator. Really handy stuff.
Love your videos and you got me into watch collecting, As i am a student i don't have much money to spend but i buy few and when i can and find something i like mostly used watches off of Ebay, tradera etc but we all got to start somewhere. Thanks again for awesome videos.
TGV, there is actually an even newer model of the Mako/Ray called the Mako II and Ray II. They have a newer movement that incorporates both the date and day into a single crown and it is hackable and hand windable. However, they do not come with sapphire crystal, SEL and some other features that the USA version has.
Odd question, but how tight do you wear your watch? Having recently moved to a diver, I find I have to wear a heavier watch tighter. Do you have small indentations on your wrist after wearing?
+krbcrwlr I like having it loose, depends on the watch, if its larger then tighter to I don't bang it. I don't have indentations, Thank you, Best regards, TGV
And what with scratches on glass especialy on seiko hardlex have you some experiences with it? Seiko has also some different type of surface it's something like matt stinels steel which you didn't mention, it's possible to remove scratch some way from this surface too?
I cant find an answer for this, but I bought a Citizen Eco Drive. And one day the light hit the watch and I noticed there are 2 microscopic dings in the case. Anyone know how to deal with it? Its not noticeable to others, but it bugs me.
Hi, I'm similar, I used to be a full-on cyclist and after some hard-hitting encounters with bad drivers I'm pretty smashed up too. I still ride but causes me too much pain to really enjoy it. So as well as hoarding watches I collect bikes, I have a healthy appetite for everything GT, particularly the handmade carbon full-suss STS and LTS range from the late 1990`s as they are so rugged and comfortable. I guess the engineering involved is what gives us a passion for well designed bikes and watches. Keep up the interesting vids as they are much appreciated by many fellow enthusiasts. :-)
you can use flexible medical tape to cover the brushed areas where you don't want the chemicals to reach. Since medical tape is flexible you can use it to follow the curvature of the watch case. You won't have to rip the tape in pieces so it will save you a lot of time. Also the edge will be a lot sharper.
Such great advice TVG! It's very easy for some in the watch collecting hobby to buy and put away those pieces and never (or rarely) wear them and enjoy them for what they are (a tool as you point out). Keep things in good working order, have them serviced and maintained but enjoy them and with that most pieces will out last us and can be passed down or along to another one who will appreciate and cherish it. I'd love to hear some more stories of the life your Seiko and Rolex lived. Live well and be strong brother!
Your videos are getting better and better. I always wanted to know about polishing the metal and this video demystified it. I might give it a try one day. Also the new Mako is definitely going to be popular... that duel with the SKX is definitely going to need to happen.
+praycmx5 Great question, sadly scratches on bezels you can't get rid of, unless you replace the insert which is not that expensive and a good watch maker can do it cheaply. Thank you :D Best regards, TGV

Great review, TGV! I have a soft spot for watches from Orient. Maybe one day I'll have good memories of my dings. Until then I'll be reminded of when I've been a bumbling idiot just lightly brushing up against a wall. :)
that day date looks awesome. I have to say i really like that orient. may have just found my new beater. looks good on that nato. you always do a good job with pairing straps and watches.
What will happen to the brushed parts of a watch when treated with this stuff? Will it turn into a proper polished look? I prefer not to test it on my brushed Breitling Blackbird.
Great watch care tutorial. I think it's an essential part of the hobby. And I really like what your doing. More please!! The Day Date is a beautiful watch, modern classic.
+TheAidansdaddy17 i prefer my ray over the skx, the lume is brighter, in my opinion looks nicer, and it gets way more wrist time, I've actually purchased 3 of them already in different colors, thats how much i like it and how much i wear them.
can i use this cape cod on my Sinn 104 lugs ? which I bought off Ebay recently after watching your videos. I want to polish it up & get rid of the scrathes :)
+JT Wu Thats a tough one, The Steinhart is the better watch but the Squale has the heritage and smaller size. I put it down to personal taste and preference. Hope that helps, Thanks for watching, Best regards, TGV
+The Urban Gentry I am currently having the same dilemma, slightly inclined towards the 20 Atmos or the 30 Atmos GMT (best of both worlds). Thanks for the feedback!
Hello, I would like to know your opinion on the Seiko "Sea Urchin" SNZF17K1. Especially interested in your opinion on its aesthetics and versatility. Thanks in advance.
+DTL L Try www.holbensfinewatchbands.com I am about to do a video on them and bracelets at the end of this week. They are great and the selection of straps is outstanding. Thank you, Best regards, TGV
My dad just suprised me with my first "luxury watch" which is the 2014 model of the Tag heuer aquaracer 300m Calibre 5 / ref. WAY2112 I think yif you got your hands on one you would really enjoy reviewing it one day ! By the way you opened me up to orient a little more in this video , interesting brand they are. GREAT VIDEO!
I have a vostok amphibia, I bought it used, with a lot of scratches, the seller told me that his father was wearing it everyday for years, told me that this scratch was made by this and that, every scratch has a history. ( maybe the guy was BSing me ) but I loved it, bought it 40 euros, and I wear it every day for 2 years and added more scratches during my daily use. And I am so hype with this watch, I will definitely pass it to my future kid :)
Thanks for the video, TGV! I've really fallen in love with my Orient Mako USA blue dial, over the last few months. Like you said, there are very few negatives about this watch. I don't mind the bezel being higher than the crystal but it does make the bezel more susceptible to scratches. However, it does an excellent job protecting the Sapphire crystal. The blue dial is definitely where it's at! I seem to recall that you are a sucker for blue. Try to get your hands on one, if you can. It's "pure class".
+adrenalinegroove Thank you my friend, I wanted the blue too, was too slow!! Sold out before i could get one. Very true about the bezel, didn't think of that, clever! Best regards, TGV
Great contrast between the two wristwatches you are wearing: the least expensive watch in your collection versus the most expensive watch in the same collection. Both beautiful watches!
+Luke Fong Kingston!!! Very cool indeed. I just search for artist I like, I had these wallpaper packs for download as gift to my viewers, stay tuned, I will do so again. Thanks for watching, Best regards, TGV
+The Urban Gentry-How I think you should have a TGV wallpaper pack with the family crest, similar to custom nato strap you have on wrist-candy watch club. What do you think?
+Javier Smith Thank you Javier! Very kind of you to say :D That is the ultimate SKX movie, its practically a second character in the movie!!! Best regards, TGV
Got 2 scratches on the bezel of the first watch I bought which is barely 2 days old. I was a bit rushed on time and when I opened my car door and bam. Damn that feels bad :(
Thanks +TGV for the great tips on restoration. I also picked up a Mako USA (in blue) from Island Watch and I really enjoy it. For whatever it's worth, the reason you can hear the rotor is because Orient uses ball bearings in their self winding mechanism. This contributes to the extremely high winding efficiency for which Orient is known. My Mako is also highly accurate at less than -1s/day.
You will find that some of the very same products that do the very same thing.....will be re-packaged and resold in different market segments with VASTLY different prices. Instead of a washing sponge with the green back...suggest using Scotch Brite pads as used in auto body shop work. They come in different grit formulations indexed by color ( grey and more aggressive red, etc). As to polish.....you can get a large bottle of "Scratch-out" or 3M Imperial Hand Glaze....or use "Blue Magic" polishing cream...also an automotive refinishing product....that is just as effective ( more so) at less cost.
the irony is that I came here to learn how to get the scratches off my watch but after listening to TGV's view on it I don't want to get them off anymore.
+Holum Fong LOL, thank you :D

I recently picked up a new watch and looked a little too close for imperfections. Don't do that, haha. I need to keep my OCD in check.
i recently got some small scratches on one of my watches, so this video was really useful!!! thanks TGV! cheers!!!
Great video :D nice tips on polishing small scratches out.
Many thanks, Dave.

Fiberglass pens available from jewelry supply stores do a great job on brushed surfaces. Easy to control and various levels of coarseness available.
Can a fibreglass pen be used to remove scratches from a highly polished, hard to reach, narrow watch surface? What can I do for this? Please let me know. Thank you.

Thanks for the tips on scratch removal. Also, that mako looks great on that strap!
I've been watching your channel for about a week now and it's great. Thank for sharing your knowledge and great, honest opinions.
Thank u Urban Gentry for not making me feel bad about scratching my Seiko SKX009K2 i wear it everyday love that watch
If you go to a hardware store you can get a gray scratchy pad which is a finer grit. I find it does a little better on the brushed finishes
I know this video wad from 4 years ago, but did you do any review on the Orient Kamasu?

You got my respect when you actually wear your watch and just embrace scratches

I did enjoy the tips on polishing.... Thanks. I also agree, that a daily worn watch, is going to pick up scratches eventually....
Great watch care tutorial. I think it's an essential part of the hobby. And I really like what your doing. More please!! The Day Date is a beautiful watch, modern classic.
+LONE WOLF Thank you my friend, its become quite a favourite.
Best regards,
TGV
Thanks Zen Master TGV , embrace your scratches. It reflects the journey of you and your watch.
PLEASE reply. How long would you say that this Mako USA lasts into the night ? not necessarily super bright but just readable.
Great advice thank you 👍
Yesterday I scratched my new beloved watch:( your video gives me hope 🙂💪thank you
I'm torn between this, the older, the Ray and most noted Seiko SKX013 in such a perfect size for me. Hmm
+TheAidansdaddy17 SKX!!! Cant beat is if the size is right.
Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
+TheAidansdaddy17 i prefer my ray over the skx, the lume is brighter, in my opinion looks nicer, and it gets way more wrist time, I've actually purchased 3 of them already in different colors, thats how much i like it and how much i wear them.
can i use this cape cod on my Sinn 104 lugs ? which I bought off Ebay recently after watching your videos. I want to polish it up & get rid of the scrathes :)
TGV, I have a question: What is objectively better, the Steinhart Ocean 1 or the Squale 20 atmos?
+JT Wu Thats a tough one, The Steinhart is the better watch but the Squale has the heritage and smaller size.
I put it down to personal taste and preference.
Hope that helps,
Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
+The Urban Gentry Thank you very much for your response!
+The Urban Gentry I am currently having the same dilemma, slightly inclined towards the 20 Atmos or the 30 Atmos GMT (best of both worlds).
Thanks for the feedback!
I was just about to ask if you still got some wrist time out of the flighty now that you have the brietling and sure enough you're wearing it now!
+Paulo Buencamino Haha, even with the Navi I still got love for the flighty :D
Thanks Paulo,
Best regards,

Hello, I would like to know your opinion on the Seiko "Sea Urchin" SNZF17K1. Especially interested in your opinion on its aesthetics and versatility. Thanks in advance.
Should I buy a band on the Internet or stick to a jeweler. If internet what website would you recommend. (Metal bands)
+DTL L Try www.holbensfinewatchbands.com
I am about to do a video on them and bracelets at the end of this week.
They are great and the selection of straps is outstanding.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
matters , brand watch are you needing a bracelet for?
My dad just suprised me with my first "luxury watch" which is the 2014 model of the Tag heuer aquaracer 300m Calibre 5 / ref. WAY2112
I think yif you got your hands on one you would really enjoy reviewing it one day !
By the way you opened me up to orient a little more in this video , interesting brand they are. GREAT VIDEO!
What about removing scratches in the glass/crystal? What do you recommend? Polywatch? Cheers.
+kyndryd spirit Polywatch all the way!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Best regards,
TGV
Great contrast between the two wristwatches you are wearing: the least expensive watch in your collection versus the most expensive watch in the same collection. Both beautiful watches!
+Mickey Mouse Thank you Mickey!

Is the Facebook group still up and running?
+Rory Craig You, up and running better then ever!
Thank you,
Best regards,

hmm think i might have been blocked got accepted when it first started now i cant get on it or even find it :(
TGV, tell me sir, where do you place Citizen as a watch manufacturer compared to the other major Japanese manufacturers such as Seiko?
+schumifan78 Great brand for entry level pieces, owned many in my time. Have still yet to feature them, will do so soon!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
where can i buy the nato strap? i like it
Sir, greetings from Kingston Jamaica, I have a query, where do you get those nice historic wallpapers I see in the background?
+Luke Fong Kingston!!! Very cool indeed.
I just search for artist I like, I had these wallpaper packs for download as gift to my viewers, stay tuned, I will do so again.
Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
+The Urban Gentry-How I think you should have a TGV wallpaper pack with the family crest, similar to custom nato strap you have on wrist-candy watch club. What do you think?
Great video again TGV! I find a nail file with multiple sides gives a good effect on brush steel and successfully gets rid of those deeper blemishes.
I'm glad to see you are well and back at it keep it up my friend
+Javier Smith Thank you Javier! Very kind of you to say :D
That is the ultimate SKX movie, its practically a second character in the movie!!!
Best regards,
TGV
I'm trying to get a gold band for a old seiko I have
what is the Seiko case back reference?
420449
As to polish.....you can get a large bottle of "Scratch-out" or 3M Imperial Hand Glaze....or use "Blue Magic" polishing cream...also an automotive refinishing product....that is just as effective ( more so) at less cost.
would you recommend cape cod on the high polish of a breitling?
Where did you get that custom NATO strap made?? You gave me a great idea for my groomsmen...
I've used quite a bit of Scotch-Brite over the years. Red or green, generally not the sponge backed stuff. I do machining work on aircraft parts. :)
Fantastic video and thank you for all your hard work, it is a pleasure watching these videos.
