Doug: “it’s sad that Genesis uses the same engines in all its vehicles. You can get the same engine in all three cars.” Mercedes, Audi, BMW: “Hold my 2.0t, 3.0t, 4.0t beers”
Doug has to consider they make cars for more than just the American market. In Korea they sell a lot more sedans, so they need these models. I see at least a couple of each of the sedans daily. I can go a few days without seeing a GV80 however
Apparently everyone; In the US; SUVs made up 47.4% of sales in 2019 while sedans made up 22.1% (NY Times, May 2020). I like sedans better too but to answer your question; car companies can charge more for basically the same thing, albeit higher suspension, more storage, AWD becoming quite standard. I suspect I understand the strategy of Genesis: they are going for a bigger slice of a smaller pie by being a better offer. Sure, SUVs are the rave. but everyone is getting in on the action in the segment and there are some compelling choices in every SUV category you can name. But with less emphasis on sedans by so many previous players, there's more of a chance to shine if you put in the effort, which Genesis has done.

Exactly. The Mercedes S-class had the same 4 cyl. diesel like the E-class and C-class and a bunch of other models. Audi A8 had the same 3.0 TDI as the Audi A4.
It's true, as mentioned by others, all major carmakers share engines amongst all their cars. No idea why it's a big deal, its been in practice for so long... a C Class and an S class literally share engines, same with a 3 series and a 7 series, not a big deal

I got this one, it's beautiful. The 3D gauge cluster however is a little bit too gimmicky, I turn it off since it's not HD, you can really start to see the pixels, but using it as a normal gauge cluster with no 3D, it's amazing quality. It drives very smooth, and honestly it's actually a really nice place to be. Coming from a 5 series, I'd definitely recommend this car! At least the prestige model.
Doug, EVERY LUXURY BRAND HAS AT LEAST 3 SEDANS...Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Lexus. I agree with your note about the overlapping engines, but they’re trying to compete in all the size classes that everyone else has.
I like how Genesis makes their cars look pretty European, with this car especially looking pretty British. My mom saw a Genesis G80 once and thought it was a British brand, not knowing it is actually how far Hyundai has come in decades.
Why have they been slow with SUV's? January 2022: G80 first ever Genesis to rank #1 in sales in Korea. Korea is a sedan market and they make absolute bank here on these sedans! lol it is kind of absurd that a number one selling car can be $60K USD in its base model but yep it is.

Thanks for reviewing the sedans. My wife and I are trend busters. We prefer sedans and in 2018 replaced her Honda Pilot with a new Mazda 6. I hate to see sedans fading in popularity.
People have underestimated Hyundai for years. Its taken a while to get where they are, but the Koreans are a proud people and very driven. Also, I don't think most people realize how much money they actually have to throw at things. Hyundai has deep pockets.
Yup, and I'm not a fan. Just move the screen closer so we can touch it. We meaning the driver and passenger. These Dials and now Acura's touchpads are complete junk.

Who the hell wants more SUV’s lol, glad they are making a lot of sedans
If your comment does not get 150 likes by 29 November 2020, I will stab myself in the leg with a butterknife.
BMW for example, the 3 series sedan starts at $41k, while the X3 starts around 43k.
SUVs are unsightly and clumsy, the only one I respect under 100k would be the jeep trackhawk. Now that's an SUV that doesn't feel like one!

That G80 is what I believe the Japanese competitors’ mid-level models should’ve eventually evolved into by now. The power, detailed aesthetics, & value in Genesis products lets me know they’re serious about what they’re bringing to market to grab their share and shake things up; I absolutely love it.

I suspect I understand the strategy of Genesis: they are going for a bigger slice of a smaller pie by being a better offer. Sure, SUVs are the rave. but everyone is getting in on the action in the segment and there are some compelling choices in every SUV category you can name. But with less emphasis on sedans by so many previous players, there's more of a chance to shine if you put in the effort, which Genesis has done.

is it too much to ask for a car with zero plastic in the interior?
Zero plastic is a little bit hard to get...
Fairly certain only Spyker has essentially zero plastic in the interior.
Yes...he even complained about Bentley and Rolls Royce for their plastic turn signal stalks
@@ch6inre6ction11 In fairness, I think it's okay to critique those brands on that. They are, without question, the two best luxury brands in the world. When you spend upwards of $400,000 for a luxury car, I would expect every tactile experience to have been considered.

That textured metal is referred to as knurled. Amazing how far Hyundai has evolved from the Excel in the mid 80's.
Sharing engines? BMW puts that 3 L turbo six cylinder in almost everything it makes

It's true, as mentioned by others, all major carmakers share engines amongst all their cars. No idea why it's a big deal, its been in practice for so long... a C Class and an S class literally share engines, same with a 3 series and a 7 series, not a big deal

It may not be the best current market strategy for Genesis to be so focused on sedans, but I love it. I'm totally sick of crossovers, SUVs, and crossover SUVs, etc. I'm excited that someone is willing to put out luxury sedans and seemingly some really good ones, at that.
