The ending with Bono falling to the ground, saying "as an angel hits the ground" with a snare drum and crash cymbal hitting together is pure art. One of THE best U2 songs ever.
Yeah...a fallen angel: "And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth (...)". (Revelation 12: 3-4).
I blinked, what happened? I was 18, in my room working on a research paper for senior year English literature due the next day, and I had just started. Mtv on my black and white TV in the background when I first heard this song. I had no idea the video wasn't in color. It was so moving. The melancholy of it made me reminiscence of past experiences. I wanted to listen to it again, something not possible back then. So I bought the cassette the next day. I wore that tape out. 30 years go by. I'm preparing for my retirement. This pops up in my TH-cam. Same feelings, like no time had passed. Only now so many more memories, including the first time falling in love with this song. Where did the time go? Huge U2 fan here. When Zooropa was released, it seemed to me that they went all out on the first five songs of the album and then said, "Whew, what a ride! Let's coast now," and just threw a few songs together for the second half. Then, after looking it over, they said, "Uh, we need to do something about the back end of this thing, let's anchor it with something really different, something that'll get people talking, get them to remember this album as something more than just five really good songs." Enter Johnny Cash.

I wanted to see the lyrics. Thank you for posting them when I hear this I honestly tingle and have strong vibrations just exactly like using a tens unit. I have been their fan 38 years. Since 32 being I am now 67. They are my #1 favorite band!! ❤❤ I love u2! I am their fan. U2?? U2!!😊😊
@phoule76 the comment I wrote above is thanking you dear sweet soul. May God bless you and yours with absolutely everything and anything you want and desire!! ❤❤😊😊🎉🎉
I was 16 when this was released. 30 somewhat years later this song still hits me. So So Good. Zooropa is probably one of the best, if the best album ever released
This is one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest bands ever made. It's about a very sad and dark subject ,yet its pure bliss and serenity the way its performed. That's the greatness of U2. They could bring you to tears singing about a cavity block if they wanted to.
I've grown in southern italy under ths sky of 80's and 90's music...and U2 were one of the shiny stars...that made me commoting...one of all...pride with its wonderful simple and struggling video..what else...poetry and love can save the world
As a German fan I have to say this video always touched me in a special way.. The song is a blessing and it means an awful lot to me. All that is left for me to say at this point is nothing but DANKE!
… wow. I was feeling pretty poetic five months ago. Just now saw this post and thought, “Hey! This guy’s got the same name and avatar as me… It IS me.” Cheers!
Amazing song. Powerful, emotional and very well produced. I've been a big fan of U2 since 1980. I see more and more people on "most overrated bands" polls that list U2. I can't and don't understand this at all. I mean honestly, they deserve mad respect. Such great music from 1980 through 2001. No way overrated.
The best u2 song, said not by me but by Bono himself. Once I had a girlfriend from Berlin and I remember listening to this song so often while thinking of that lost love.
Finally, the official video of this piece of art is next to come here. Write down a quite simple melody, add some deep lyrics, mix it all with a perfect voice, you get one of the most beautiful songs ever heard on both Heaven and Earth
Man this is how you make a tune. The soft playing of every instrument just fits it, Bono nails it here, exactly the right amount of energy in his vocal to fit the song. The ambient stuff floating in the back is so cool, I'd love to hear that track isolated. My favourite U2 tune.
The best video of U2 in the 90's or maybe of whole their videography! Was directed by Wim Wenders in October 1993 as a return favor for letting him use the song in his movie. The video was produced by Debbie Mason and edited by Jerry Chater. Set in Berlin, the clip stars German actress Meret Becker, whose stepfather, Otto Sander, was playing a lead role in Wenders’ film. U2 appear in the video as guardian angels who watch over a young band playing their own songs. There are also several shots of the band standing on the statue of Victoria, atop the Siegessäule monument in Berlin. A model of the statue was used for those scenes.
I was about to ask how did they film those scenes but you've already explained :P Wim Wenders, huh? Interesting to see how much in common U2 & Depeche Mode (my beloved bands) have.
@@dougdoug9268 I'd like to think they've affected more people around the world than any other....Beatles, Coldplay, etc. Love both bands but U2 just hits different.
Wow. I can't watch this without getting a tear in my eye. I've been through a lot of pain in my life and sometimes I have my doubts if there is anyone in the universe that really cares. When I watch this it gives me a hopeful feeling that there is someone in the spirit world that's looking out for me.
Finally was able to watch Wings of Desire and immediately remembered this video. OMG, THE SONG FINALLY MAKES PERFECT SENSE. It’s a beautiful song without the context, but watch the first movie at the very least. I’m going to have to buy Faraway, So Close on DVD to see the conclusion of what was an achingly brilliant and poignant movie.
I know Bono can be a bit overexposed and gets some hate but U2 still have all four original members, are still friends, and Bono has been married to the same woman for decades. And knowing what Adam has been trying to bring more awareness to Individuals who suffer from depression makes me respect Adam even more.
They are a band that does a lot of good in the world. You also never see them on the gossips sites or involved in crazy things Ike alot of other musicians.
@@ClintonBeharry-cj1rh I can tell you for sure, he's compromised his Christian faith more than a few times. I got to challenge him about that at an airport lounge once and he wasn't too happy about that. And, I'm a fellow Dubliner too of the same age!
Three o'clock in the morning It's quiet and there's no one around Just the bang and the clatter As an angel runs to ground👼👼👼 It doesn’t get better than that!THIS is a masterpiece💕
This is perhaps U2’s most “emo” song of all time. It always makes me melancholy and takes me back to a very different time: I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall, when bands like U2 (but especially U2) examined the desolation and decay that existed in the Soviet Union - on one side of Deutschland, one of the greatest economic powerhouses in the world . . . to the east, stagnation, a lack of purpose and little hope to look towards. This song, and “One,” always made me very sad.
This was my wife and I's first dance song at our wedding...its always meant something to us.sad thing is I think most of our guests had never heard it before.masterpiece.
I remember in University in England, a long time ago. A Spanish girl lent me some of her CDs to play on her boombox, one of the album's was a U2 cd. I play the cd and eventually this song came on. I told her this song reminds me of Dublin. Such a long time ago but so close.
My favourite too and I’m no means a u2 fan. But this song captures exactly the zeitgeist of my life when it came out. I was in Germany that summer, what a time and what a place. The song is focused elsewhere for obvious reasons, the personal meaning to u2, the us audience of course, but to me it captures early 90s Germany, not just the recording of video. Great times, sad, happy and hopeful with an element of fear of future and the scare of the past.
That's why U2 is an everlasting Band. There is no time to hear their songs and performances. And the Very pleasure to hear this song and appreciate the hypnotic beauty of Nastassja Kinski.
Every pulse, every word, the way the lyrics sit and rise. The drums, bass, guitar, singing, performance, video, art, musicianship - the start, the middle, the end. Every single millisecond of this song and this video … genius. What a masterpiece!
This song reminds me of getting home from school in 1993 maybe 94. I would have been 13.I was just getting into music.I used to sit and watch MTV everyday before my dad got home from work and put the news on.Stay Faraway So Close used to be on a lot.It grabbed my attention. The Lyrics and how Bono was singing. My dad would describe it as "Real music son".Of course he was right. Listening back to it now, as I have a lot in the past 28 years. The lyrics are unbelievably good. That Voice to.Its one of there best songs
Thanks It sounds like a way I would describe them. They are so much of my life. They almost became like the wallpaper on my walls. Not boring or mundane, but right and comfortable. I love them. They right. my life.
So young and innocent when this song released and everytime i hear this song on radio i froze and listen cos it's hard to ignore the song. So many memories ❤
Who could down vote this masterpiece? ‘Stay’ has a permanent place in my top 10 U2 songs, as well as videos. The melody is almost haunting, the lyrics describing how we self-sabotage and are unable to move forward to save ourselves. ‘Dressed up, like a car crash, your wheels are turning but you’re upside down’ is the crux of the song. Brilliant. The angel on the statue always gives me Vertigo, tho. 😂💚
It’s beautiful not sad. This is one of a kind at its point in time. The pause button isn’t as great as it seems. There are other completely new and beautiful moments today and in the future, diffetent
I was 11 when this came out. 41 now. I thought it was the coolest song and was frustrated because it didn’t get a lot of radio play. I still love it and now I understand more what it’s about - angels and the unseen spiritual world. We walk by faith and not by sight. ❤
A lot of their music since 2000 suck mostly nut this era was pretty brilliant. They peaked in the 90’s because they made interesting records. The last 2 decades have been a bit of a note compared to what they used to make
All That You Can’t Leave Behind & HTDAAB hardly sucked 2 of their greatest albums!Plus the record breaking 360 tour 09-11 i would say the the last 20 years haven’t been too bad 🤷🏼♂️😂
@@tombutler6451 those albums were pretty weak compared to achtung baby and zooropa. I really tried to like the 2000 stuff but they were just too over produced and weak. Sadly they haven’t changed their sound ever since those albums. All the albums since 2000 are pretty interchangeable
@@swamisalami3000 I loved Achtung Baby, Zooropa far less other than Stay. The band's absolute peak albums in my opinion though are The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum, followed by The Unforgettable Fire.
It's my first time seeing it - absolutely breathtaking, enchating, mesmerizing, simply amazing!! Will keep watching it over and over before going to sleep tonight. I think it's just become my favourite U2 music video, hands down.

Green light, Seven Eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don't smoke, don't even want to
Hey now, check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down
You say when he hits you, you don't mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Is that what it is
Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depends on who's around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip sync to the talk shows
And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing
If I could stay
Then the night would give you up
Stay and the day would keep its trust
Stay and the night would be enough
Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin
And if you listen I can't call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout, I'll only hear you
If I could stay
Then the night would give you up
Stay then the day would keep its trust
Stay with the demons you drowned
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay and the night would be enough
Three o'clock in the morning
It's quiet and there's no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground
Just the bang
And the clatter
As an angel
Hits the ground
Amazing song! Gets better every time I listen to it!.

You really was… thats my mums account, im turning 14! Im like obsessed w u2 because of my parents and im really thankful for that! 💗
Green light, Seven Eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don't smoke, don't even want to
Hey now, check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down
You say when he hits you, you don't mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Hey babe, is that what it is
Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depend's on who's around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch to the talk shows
And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing
If I could stay...
Then the night would give you up
Stay...and the day would keep its trust
Stay...and the night would be enough
Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satelite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin
And if you listen I can't call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout, I'll only hear you
If I could stay...
Then the night would give you up
Stay...then the day would keep its trust
Stay...with the demons you drowned
Stay...with the spirit I found
Stay...and the night would be enough
Three o'clock in the morning
It's quiet and there's no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground
Just the bang
And the clatter
As an angel
Hits the ground
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you're upside down
I wanted to see the lyrics.
Its about INXS leader singer btw
Beautiful lyrics❤
All that is left for me to say at this point is nothing but DANKE!
... so ist es!!!!
Zoo Station is good too!

To younger days. To better days. To great music. To a great band.
… wow. I was feeling pretty poetic five months ago. Just now saw this post and thought, “Hey! This guy’s got the same name and avatar as me…
It IS me.”
Cheers!
Lol 🤣 I like the quotes!
Great band! Good music!
To better days. Yes help for world.
Possibly the greatest band ever, longevity and creative stamina. I love their newer albums as well.
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror by Robert Nix
Totally gorgeous song from 1993. I have waited for a long time to see the original video for this song. So glad to see it
Amazing song.
Bono The Edge Adam Clayton Larry Mullen Jr.
I feel you brother... Lost love the universal pain. Sending you ☀ From 🇮🇪
Yes, I understand your feelings.
When did he say that?
one of the best u2 song, if not THE BEST.
Possibly one of Bono's finest singing performances.
Agreed! He really is enjoying singing here.
I suggest one live from Modena (pavarotti and friends concert) i think is the best
@@zooropa200 there are many...
Stay and So Cruel and Ultraviolet.
And there's many many great ones. What a voice he has
This is for sure the best U2 song. Very simple and raw but beautiful. His best vocal track and those riffs on the choruses are heavenly.
No way the best song...YOU MISSED MANY HUNDREDS OF BEUTY OF THE U2'
@@ohlala.23 no way, this is the best U2's
Hi...still listen to U2....nobody is here for to JUDGE THE TASTE OF MUSIC..pointless
You should try listening to the Craig Armstrong version of this song.
Listened to the Craig Armstrong version, good, but not even close , missing the Edges guitar for sure
U2 >💣 🔥 💘 🎶
This song, in many ways, is the band at the peak of their abilities. There are few "perfect" songs, but in my estimation this qualifies as one.
Lots of memories... And feeling with this one
Finally, the official video of this piece of art is next to come here. Write down a quite simple melody, add some deep lyrics, mix it all with a perfect voice, you get one of the most beautiful songs ever heard on both Heaven and Earth
Right?
Yes💜💜💜
WORDS CAN'T EXPLAIN THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG, IT'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL, UP THERE WITH "" ONE "", ""WITH OR WITH OUT YOU "", ECT....☘️🇮🇪☘️💚🤍🧡
Oh yes!!
Bono has got a very sweet voice in this beautiful song.
I fall in love with nobody more and more every time I watch this clip. It's simply so fantastic....
Man this is how you make a tune. The soft playing of every instrument just fits it, Bono nails it here, exactly the right amount of energy in his vocal to fit the song. The ambient stuff floating in the back is so cool, I'd love to hear that track isolated. My favourite U2 tune.
So many songs that lessened our pain during our journey through life. Used to just drive on the freeway at night and listen to this song on repeat.
I put the cd in and just hit repeat too
The best video of U2 in the 90's or maybe of whole their videography!
Interesting to see how much in common U2 & Depeche Mode (my beloved bands) have.
amazing... i never knew that, it´s been over 20 years since i first heard this song but never knew about the film behind it.
Wings of Desire. Wim Wenders. Which then remake City of Angels
What's the name of the lady angel ?

This and other U2 songs have kept me alive a few times. You’re special U2!!! Stay 🦋
Biggest band on earth
@@dougdoug9268 I'd like to think they've affected more people around the world than any other....Beatles, Coldplay, etc. Love both bands but U2 just hits different.
Your song saved my life...
You're special too! Glad you're still here 💛
Stuck in a moment
This is without a doubt one of the most perfect music videos from 1993. A totally beautiful and too often underplayed song and video. Absolute genius.
Wow. I can't watch this without getting a tear in my eye. I've been through a lot of pain in my life and sometimes I have my doubts if there is anyone in the universe that really cares. When I watch this it gives me a hopeful feeling that there is someone in the spirit world that's looking out for me.
Keep on having faithin in life David!
someone IS always looking onto you. Don't let go
Thanks for the encouraging words.
I appreciate it.
David, I’m sending you love tonight. ❤️
Thanks Elizabeth, I appreciate your comment.
Maybe one of the greatest song ever written in the history of music. U2, the best band ever!
I know Bono can be a bit overexposed and gets some hate but U2 still have all four original members, are still friends, and Bono has been married to the same woman for decades. And knowing what Adam has been trying to bring more awareness to Individuals who suffer from depression makes me respect Adam even more.
Yes
They are a band that does a lot of good in the world. You also never see them on the gossips sites or involved in crazy things Ike alot of other musicians.
Viiii
Bono . Does nothing wrong.
@@ClintonBeharry-cj1rh I can tell you for sure, he's compromised his Christian faith more than a few times. I got to challenge him about that at an airport lounge once and he wasn't too happy about that. And, I'm a fellow Dubliner too of the same age!
Does anyone care I freaking LOVE THIS SONG AND VIDEO?
Because I do❤️.

The BEST banda of the world... From Bogotá Colombia.
One of the greatest U2 songs, which means one of the greatest songs, period. A masterpiece.
This song is soooooo underrated. My favorite U2 song...
Me too ❤
This was my wife and I's first dance song at our wedding...its always meant something to us.sad thing is I think most of our guests had never heard it before.masterpiece.
❤❤❤
awwww
If I ever got married, (I’m 42, probably won’t happen) I always said my first dance will be Luminous Times. ❤️
You two chose a beautiful song. I can only imagine how you looked in each other’s eyes as you danced. How romantic!!
Please forgive me if I got it wrong but isn't this about a working girl who gets used and abused and has has died emotionally ?
Finally. Elegance, class and perfect song!!!
This Stay (Faraway So Close) song by U2 is very musically enchanting.
Alguém ouvindo esse clássico em 2024?
Hi from Los Angeles

Hi from São Paulo , Brazil .
Oui.

I remember in University in England, a long time ago.
A Spanish girl lent me some of her CDs to play on her boombox, one of the album's was a U2 cd.
I play the cd and eventually this song came on.
I told her this song reminds me of Dublin.
Such a long time ago but so close.
Maybe the most underrated song of all time. A masterpiece.
Anyone can STAY with this beautiful track thousand years!!!!! You can go anywhere Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin....
Very underrated song rarely played on the radio etc, my favourite song of U2 and still loving it in 2022.
Alex, unfortunately nothing of quality is played on the radio these days.
@@downburst1 I know the feeling, this song will always be special to me and always brings back memories of what seems like a past life.
@@artlover1477 You are correct, I just feel sorry for the younger generation of people that may not find this brilliant song.
At the time (early 90s), it did a lot!! I used to hear this song every single day, on the radio... here, in Brazil.
Easily one of the best songs ever written by anyone. And the video accompanying it is equally magical.
4:31 direct to the heart.
I sang this at a karaoke bar once. I still remember how free I felt
What a beautiful song!!! Twenty something years later it still brings tears to my eyes and gives me goose bumps....
I think if he sung this song more straight-up like in the Zoo TV Tour it would've been a bigger hit.
Thanks It sounds like a way I would describe them. They are so much of my life. They almost became like the wallpaper on my walls. Not boring or mundane, but right and comfortable. I love them. They right. my life.
I am almost crying now when I hear again this song...I loved this song so badly in early 90s and later...a masterpiece ❤❤❤❤
So young and innocent when this song released and everytime i hear this song on radio i froze and listen cos it's hard to ignore the song. So many memories ❤
Absolutely one of my favorite U2 albums. The Edge's guitar work is so technically dificult yet innovative throughout.
It's sad, the world doesn't make music like this anymore
It does. There's thousands of albums released every year.
@@goldenhourkodak Yes genius still lives this is a classic nostalgic sound tho. Lot of formula DJ/Producers

My absolute favourite U2 song ever. Close 2nd is light my way....but this takes it for me.❤
What is it about this song that moves me so deeply? It is truly one of their best, and they have many.
U2 is timeless! Like all Good music from the 80's, 90's bands with lyrics that communicate love, deceiving and the most important feelings
man people who say that u2 sucks... surely havent heard this song. truly a masterpiece
