Dad made me listen to this song 2 years ago. A year ago, i bought a car for my family. I don't think I've seen my father so happy in a while when I got him the car. We went on a short trip in our new car. On the way back, i played this song in the car. Mom and sister were sleeping, the driver was driving, and my father was enjoying my selected songs, nodding his head in the front seat, i remember i played this song and the moment was so beautiful. It felt so good to see him enjoying , relaxing on a peaceful drive to home after working so hard all these years for me. My dad passed away 2 months back. This song will forever remain special to me now.

Bless you sweet child of this world. Bono became a bit odd, but this era was amazing. Peace and love to you. May I call you Sister ?
I've never been a U2 fan.. but my mom just passed away last sunday from a massive stroke. We were playing this song from her phone for her beside the hospital bed because she liked it on her spotify playlist... Now as I hear this I just tear up and miss her dearly. It is a pretty song. If your mom is still around give her a giant hug, because there will be a point in time that you won't be able to again.
The Black Telephone Those of us old enough to remember when the phone was wired to the wall, usually in the kitchen, can relate to this story. I loved this read. When I was a young boy, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box.. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time. My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information, please," I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. "Information." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question "Nobody's home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?" the voice asked "No, "I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice. After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts. Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, "Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, " Wayne , always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please." "Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest . When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston . I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle . I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please." Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?" "I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls." I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. "Please do," she said. "Just ask for Sally." Three months later I was back in Seattle . A different voice answered, "Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. Before I could hang up, she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne ?" " "Yes." I answered. Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you. The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant. Never underestimate the impression you may make on others. Whose life have you touched today?
The Joshua Tree is genuinely one of the greatest albums ever written. I wore the needle down on my record player when my mum bought the album for my 19th birthday in 1987. EVERY song makes you feel incredible.
My dad loved this song. 💙🦋 RIP DAD 3/10/19 Listening to this because you always told me "this is what you call music" lol I love it and I love you. We all miss you 🙏💙🦋
I've always thought this song has one of the best executed slow builds to a climax. The vocal performance and all the instruments too - it all just comes together perfectly.
Hey there - How aol r u as I've been having the same opinion since 1987 - I listen to this track at least 4 times a day since then.....OMG it is so brilliant!!!
This is hands down one of the most AMAZING songs ever written. EVERYTHING about it moves me. It's like a classic black dress with a strand of pearls; It never goes out of style!

My dad loved U2 and played this song a lot. We lost him last year to covid and hearing the songs he loved fills me with so much pain but also nostalgia. I love you so much dad. I'll play all the songs you loved no matter how much it hurts.
Pain is part of the process of grief. I'm hoping as time passes you hurt less and less that whenever you play his favourite songs you smile and get filled with happiness.
This is unarguably the absolute best song U2 ever released, extending far past a troubled heartache. . . It speaks volumes about the unwanted responsibilities faced during young adulthood. I turned 18 exactly one decade AFTER this song was released (via their 5th studio album, The Joshua Tree). Now, 17 years later (post 1997) the song lyrics only further reiterate the song’s deeper meaning. . . Nothing in this life is easy. The older one becomes, there are only that many more hardships he/she must face & overcome.
The relentless bass line and drums, Edge's guitar artistry and Bono's gut wrenching passion - all these elements create a whole greater than the parts. You cannot turn away from this song.
You cannot turn away from this song. It has a throbbing nature which the dum, dum, dum of the bass. Then there is Bono with his ‘with or without you’. It is very much a low thuzz that tickles the brain and then the drums kick in and I find my heart prolapses and I am an open empty mess on the floor. And i know they won’t be happy, but this is me. With or without you
This is one one of the most beautiful rock ballads ever composed. Bono has complete control of his voice using it masterfully building the emotion of the song. He holds his voice back, straining against the shackles he has placed on it. Then he breaks free of his bonds and lets his voice soar. It is just superb.
This song is a master piece, from Bono's vocals to Adam's bass, Larry's drums, and of course the Edge's guitar riffs, there will never be anything like this song.
Can't believe my dad is gone, he showed me this song years ago when I was a kid and he'd sing along so I would too sometimes. He just passed away today and this song brings back so many memories.. I love you dad ❤ 06/16/21
Played at my sister’s funeral, requested by her husband… I miss you so much my beautiful baby sister. The best person I’ve ever known. Pure goodness in every way. Love you forever and a day 🤍 🪽👼🏻🪽🕯️👼🏻🌈🌹☮️💟
This song tears my heart out,,,cuts it into little pieces...throws it all together in a bowl...stirs the bowl as he walks away...concerned look ...then a careful smile...unsure of the implications.
Nothing hits better than listening to this song while driving down a back road on a summer evening, windows down, somehow it smells nostalgic outside - kinda like your childhood, the music is blasting and your singing as you drive along watching the sunset 🌇
My dad passed away at may 1st this year and i didn't get to have a last chat with him now i'm here listening U2 songs because this is his favorite band and by listening to their songs i feel like he's just here with me
Sorry you won’t be able to see your dad. Tough to say good bye during this difficult times. I lost my grandfather and my cousin and it’s tough to not be able to attend their funerals
This song was played a thousand of times by my brother... when he left home my mother used to play it when she missed him and now I play it... because we are in different continents and for a moment I feel them closer.
Crazy story I can relate too my dads favorite song he passed away when I had cancer at age 45 I was 14 now I’m 25 with my 2 daughters I know my dad is watching over me an my family crying to the song rn
2 months ago my father introduced me to this song and I listened to it every day by my side and I didn't give it any importance. This morning my father passed away and this song has been my comfort, enjoy this work of art.
They didn't make the greatest collection of songs of all time like Beatles or Led Zeppelin but when U2 made a good song, mother of god... it was a _good_ song.
I never seem to stop feeling surprised at how ahead of its time this song was. The way they put together the instruments, Bono's vocals. Ohhhh and the way thr main guitar riff comes in is just...indescribably perfect.
Everything in this song is absolute perfection... The growing intensity, the deepness of Bono's voice going to despair as he interprets the lyrics, The Edge's reverberating poetry, the beats becoming more and more powefull as the song goes and Adam's bass defining the identity of the song... The Best Song Ever in the Whole Freakin World, I daresay.
That poignant whistling synth with that steady syncopated bass line plays so smoothly with Bono’s raspy vocals, that build up to an incredible hook. Great track.
I owe a lot to U2. This song was the only thing that helped my baby sleep the first 8 months of her life. Even during pregnancy she loved it. I had a seizure and stopped feeling movement. I played this song and she moved. I cried I was so happy she was okay.
The production quality of this song is incredible, it really was way ahead of its time. It literally sounds like something they could have released a week ago!
I was 15 when this came out. It's hard to believe that much time has gone by. All I can say, especially to the younger generation, is to enjoy life and every moment cause it goes faster than you think.
I'm 16 right now, and discovered U2 by their song 'Bad'. Can you tell me or explain what life was like back then, cause I wish that I were born in the 70s/80s? Was life as awesome as you hear it is? I have so many questions.
@@JoelMiller8756Don’t. Older people mythologise the past (I'm 64). In 50 years time people will be discovering the great music of today and wishing they were here. Enjoy the now.
This is my favorit song of U2 ! I still sing it now that i have 48 years old ! I became a singer/musician and writer... and U2, you have been with me all the way through the storms in my life... Thank you for your talent.
Bono is a very demonic guy these days. He has an alter ego called "Mephisto", the name of a biblical demon, he uses to abuse people who represent the light. I don't know what is happening but it's kind of spooky stuff.
It was a perfect storm of talent from the band and "the mix wizard" behind the top noch mix table (that produce that extra magic you hear but are always neglected or forgoten...) and all the real analog and digital music gear etc., giving us timeless masterpiece.
One of those rare songs that comes crashing through the thoughts and emotions of anyone growing up in that decade. Even I didn't realize then how powerful and everlasting this song would be. A TRUE classic!
A person like you to sing a meaningful song like this . I mean what more can you do . Pple think they know it all. But me and you . Who ever ur ur .it's simply not . No no no .without without you. . Pried huuu
I have listened this masterpiece a couple times I think when I was 6/7 years old in my dad's jeep.. now I'm 20 and my dad's passed away when I was 9. This song gives me good vibes and memories and I hope I'll never forget it!
Mate hold this song close to your heart - it will be there forever - I've played this song at least 4 times a day since the late 1980's - and somehow it gets better!!!! So sorry for you loss....
There are not many songs that stop you in your tracks and you have to stop whatever you are doing just to listen until the end. This is one of those songs.Almost puts you in a trance. Such a great song.
My mom loved this song, today she passed away because of the current situation, I can’t believe she is gone and I can’t accept it yet I know she won’t come back to hug me or my brother or my father, I hope this video remains more years so each nine of June I come back here and remember her more than ever Edit: Thanks a lot for the support, I know I’m not the only one who has gone through these and I’m sure those people would be happy to receive any sort of encouraging messages, at least I am, once again thanks to everyone both those who have supported me through a like and those with a comment both are equally important and heartwarming
Larry is the heartbeat of U2. Man, just listen to those drums! This song came out the summer I turned 13, and I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes. I’m still in utter awe.
I can remember so vividly driving home from work at 16 years old hoping I was able to tape this song. I had a double cassette player and hit record before I left because WBCN in Boston said they would be playing it at the top of the hour. When I got home I start rewinding the tape and there it was in all its glory. I put my headphones on and must of listened to it 20 times that night. Every inch of my bedroom walls was covered in U2 posters or something U2 related. I was so obsessed with them back then. It almost brings tears to my eyes thinking of those days. Life was so simple. When I finally got to see them live during the Joshua Tree tour it's probably still one of the best memories of my life. Best band ever in my opinion. 🙂
So powerful...even after 37 years...there's no feeling in life quite like this....either you know it....or you don't...Bono manages to pour so much into his pained wailings without overdoing it whatsoever...truly amazing tune 🔥
You must have known you created a legend when you finished the final touches on this recording. 30 years later I still get shivers when I listen to it at the age of 65. Thank you.
This song takes me back to 1987, when I was pregnant with my 1st child. My son Josh, whom I adore 🥰 He’s now 33! ❤️ I absolutely love this song then & now… Bono is truly awesome!!
Today’s music is about grabbing some good looking teenager off the street and let them “sing” to words that have no meaning. They don’t need to be good singers cause there is auto-tune (Bieber!) sad state of music currently
No, I can't ! I was 30 yrs old at the time. Believe me, TIME FLIES !! It seems like yesterday.....it seems like a lifetime ago.... Stay Safe and Sane and Healthy. Be Blessed.🕊 🌟💫💛
3:04 Thats what hits me every time. No words, just wailing, but to the melody. I normally hate this kind of wailing thing, but this is how its done right. U2s first 4 albums are brilliant. Just brilliant. Justify any later sins of theirs.
This song is so good. Those who don’t like it, unfortunately some day it is likely you’ll come across it again, and it will break you down in a way you didn’t know music could. Impossible to deny this song’s power.
Isn’t it amazing how music can express our inner thoughts and emotions better than we ever could? Ps. I’m kinda jealous of the those who disliked this song, cause they probably never felt this way and I wish I could too
Trust me, I am jealous of them too, in a way, but usually, the kind of emotion that this song can evoke is only brought on by a pain that results from the loss of a true kind of ecstasy. If someone can't get what this song is trying to say to them, then they probably haven't gotten to feel all of the things that make us human, this song only hurts so much because at one point we were that much happier. So yeah in a way I'm grateful I get to experience this song, even though 9 days out of 10 I wish that I didn't know the feeling. @@al3bellino
🎯 Remember the media's astroturfed backlash against them for having a song on an ipod? 🙄 U2 didn't deserve that manufactured backlash...Bono got the IMF debt forgiven for 3rd world countries for chrissakes. The economist Michael Hudson calls the US the loan shark of the world using IMF/World Bank to strip nations of their assets. Long live Bono's debt cancellation jubilee! The real jubilee is debt jubilee & land re-distribution. The original Summarian bible said: debt forgiveness and land re-distribution ie debt jubilee, Leviticus 25, prior to the Greek translation. Western civilization is the first civilization to eschew this (Michael Hudson). "Civilization is madness." - Freud "Can't see the right road when the roads are paved." - Bob Marley from Concrete Jungle, African Herbman
Being 34 from India engaged in daily struggles of life when I come back to home and listen to this very song it gives a feel of my sheer existence. Makes me realise that I do exist and I can still feel . What a song it is . Just pure magic
Hang in there my brother ✌️ things will get better eventually and never give up no matter how hard life gets. And don't fall into the trap of debt as that is very common. It may seem easier to get a lot of money then paying it back later on but it will cause stress. I have never taken a loan before and I am still happy, I have my friends 👍😃
VC, you couldn't have said it any better. This song is magical and I agree you feel, "your sheer existence" when it is played. I don't know about you but I want to be Bono when I see the video.
My dad used to play this in the car, whenever I was sleeping I would wake up and pretend I was asleep so he would take me up to my room. Good times. Always Cherish every single moment with your family, you don't know when they'll be gone.
My Grandad’s favourite song being a man from Kildare. Played this at his funeral four years ago, still brings a swathe of emotion, incredible what music can do for the soul.

Governments and religions produce separatist thinking and ideologies.
Us vs Them insanity.
Then we have wars, genocides, murder, torture, violence and all other atrocities
Krishnamurti said identification with groups, color, race, religion, political parties, sexuality, gender etc is a violent act.
Why?
Because it creates division, it creates a me and a you when in truth, in reality, there is only US.
I am you and you are me and together we are us, we are 1.
Whatever I do to others I do to myself.
This is true literally and metaphorically.

Tell me one song from a thousand years ago that we jam today
Well said.😊
Larry and Adam lay down the rhythm that allows Edge and Bono to be absolutely brilliant.

I never seem to stop feeling surprised at how ahead of its time this song was. The way they put together the instruments, Bono's vocals. Ohhhh and the way thr main guitar riff comes in is just...indescribably perfect.
First time I heard it I genuinely thought it was from the 2000s.

Timeless classic. Nothing like a U2 classic
That bass ride is one of the most emotional in history of music
That poignant whistling synth with that steady syncopated bass line plays so smoothly with Bono’s raspy vocals, that build up to an incredible hook. Great track.
I think it’s actually the infinity guitar that they got lent doing that.
It is The Here’s guitar that is doing that, not a whistling synth, though I thought the same thing when I first heard this song.
I owe a lot to U2. This song was the only thing that helped my baby sleep the first 8 months of her life. Even during pregnancy she loved it. I had a seizure and stopped feeling movement. I played this song and she moved. I cried I was so happy she was okay.

This can not be luck, that means some guardian s watching you 3 :-)
Semplicemente favolosi
That's why I quit my regular job and work now as an artist, Man. Now I chill with music palying in the background and paint... God bless you Dear!
@@sachalebabe Congratulations Sarah on your new and happy life!

You soul is forever, you touch my heart ❤
I'm 78 and LOVE this song. U2 IS MAGIC.

Dork
You rock, Bro!
My dad used to play this in the car, whenever I was sleeping I would wake up and pretend I was asleep so he would take me up to my room. Good times.
Always Cherish every single moment with your family, you don't know when they'll be gone.
True
Beautiful
Well said, wise words
Couldn't be truer!! My mother father, brother and sister have all now passed and boy do I miss them.
So true I lost my dad last year, I will always miss him
My Grandad’s favourite song being a man from Kildare.
Played this at his funeral four years ago, still brings a swathe of emotion, incredible what music can do for the soul.
A morte não existe nós somos espiritos eternos imortais um dia vamos todos voltar a encontrar-nos acredite!
Love that, 😊
My dad had kids sarajevo and one by U2 played at his funeral. Never been a band like U2
