Thirty five years since the summer of 1989....sitting in a car with the boy I loved. Longing in his eyes...playing me this song for the first time. The music washes over me and I'm right back in that car at age 18 with my whole life ahead of me. Given the power to go back and do it again, I'd have never let him go. For me this is a fantastic unrequited love song. The build up and final release of the guitar solo is perfect. For me it captures the disappointment, longing and sadness I've (a lot of us) felt when I've longed for connection with someone but it never happens.
I’ve never gotten that from this song. The complete opposite, actually. Maybe the video, perhaps, I hadn’t seen it before. But I’ve honestly never gotten any of that before from the lyrics/ sound alone. 💗
Beautifully said. It's the *perfect* musical illustration of unrequited love. Even without the lyrics you would get the sense of what the song is about. The music alone tells a powerful story and you can't help but *feel* it with all your heart. It builds into such an overwhelming frenzy of emotion and then the music dies away into a feeling of yearning and dashed dreams. Anyone who has suffered through unrequited love will understand.
The best video of U2 in the 80's! Was filmed in the town of Ostia, outside of Rome. Most of the footage was shot on a beach on the outskirts of Ostia, but there is one shot in the town itself. The church that can be seen when the funeral procession is happening is the Basilica of Santa Aurea.
I thought so, I remember seeing this on MTV,when they used to play videos. Just out of curiosity, is this the same actor that played on Game of Thrones?
@@michaelmartinez3674 Paolo Rissi is the Italian actor in the video. And Peter Dinklage is the American actor from Game of Thrones. They are similar, but not the same.
The church is actually in Ostia Antica, not Ostia. They are both very near to each other though. The beach looks to be along the coast south of Ostia at the Cancelli, which are public beaches with large sand dunes.
I get that the music is great, but did anyone see just how unbelievable the music video actually was? That was the _ultimate_ 1980s music video if I ever saw one. Fucking fantastic.
1:40 When she looks at him and knows; 1:46, when the Strongman looks at his friend and immediately knows how lost his friend is in love and knows it will only bring pain to his friend; I always was so grateful to the strong man for being his friend; 3:16 with the ring and that smile; 3:24 hopping in the Strongman's sidecar, meaning his buddy had his back on the trip; 3:47 That heartbreaking smile he shoots her; 4:01 Dashed; 4:50 ending the only way it could ever end. 6:00 Tossing the ring into the grave because his love died (or did he die); 6:03 The Strongman sees the ring and shares the pain with his friend and knows what a loss this is for his friend. Amazing video. One of the all time greats.
I have always believed that somewhere in the world there are still people who can feel the same emotions I feel when I listen to this timeless masterpiece.
The first time I heard this song, I cried. I then saw the video, and I wept even more. When my ex and I divorced, I listened to it too often, but it fit how I felt. I have never lost that love in my heart. No matter how old I become, this song and video still affect me deeply.
The world has always been "bad" depending on where you were or who you were or what color you were. You were ignorant about that as you were young. As they say- that´s bliss
For two people to become a couple both have to feel the same way...Sadly this is a one way story that was bound to end in tragedy but that is what makes loving someone so special even if its never returned.

It's the first song that I learned in English and by memory of U2...I speak spanish, I'm from Argentina...but when I was a little girl on My fourteens I guees, I was "singing" in English....all because of them...I just love The song and I ❤️ U2
And can we take a moment to appreciate how good a guitarist The Edge is, and how well his unique style suits U2's songs? He has a bright, bell-like sound only with lots of reverb and washes... it's mesmerising.
Not a big U2 fan, but I can't deny they're great. They particularly excel at " longing" types of songs. This is probably my favorite. The author probably knows very well what it's like not to get the person you admire.
This song is haunting to the core. A masterpiece of music and video that match each other and sends chills down your spine. The solo by The Edge is magical. It has been an honour to go to 5 concerts and see U2 perform live.
Forgot what a masterpiece this song and video are. Edge is quoted as saying the woman died at the end so my reasoning is the main character climbing the ladder and trying to grasp the trapeze is symbolic of his attempt to finally be with the woman he truly loves. He has her for but a few moments before slipping forever through his fingers.
That's a good call considering he threw the ring down on the coffin but prior she looks like she's in her bed tossing a turning..He wouldn't throw the ring in there if her partner died somehow stopping his fall..
From Wikipedia: Director Meiert Avis shot the promotional video in the town of Ostia, outside Rome on 18 April 1989.[4] Written by Barry Devlin, the video takes an unusual cinematic approach to the song, with U2 band members making only brief cameo appearances. The video tells the story of a dwarf played by Paolo Risi[5] who falls in love with a trapeze artist played by Paola Rinaldi, one of whom apparently dies towards the end. While there is disagreement amongst fans about exactly who has died, The Edge was quoted as saying it is the trapeze artist who dies.[6] The video pays homage to Fellini, who was shooting his last movie, La voce della luna, only a few miles away from the U2 set, and also to Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks.[7]
Of course, the fact that those scenes showing him mourning near the end are interspersed with some shots of the trapeze artist apparently dreaming adds the extra layer of...maybe she's merely dreaming the whole sequence up, and that the dream is reflective of the "death" of her as a love interest for Risi's character!
@@MusicRunner82 Cool! A much more nuanced and imaginative take on the meaning of those scenes. I was much more literal in my interpretation and, after seeing the burial scene, assumed the “dreaming” shot was of her battling a fever. I like your interpretation better. 🙂
Bono, possibly the greatest of lyricists in contemporary music. I can’t think of anyone that equals him. On top of that incredible vocal melody and performance.
Absolutely beautiful song, love it. The solo truly does have a cathartic release to it and the guitar riff itself is very nostalgic. I will pass this song down to the next generation of teenagers forever. I love this song, sincerely, a British 13 year old.
I had an old cassette tape with other songs yet most notabaly or memorably this one on it. It helped me get through my teenage years of Depression. That was many years ago now, God has set me free.
Ever since U2 videos started getting the HD and 4K treatment a few months ago, this is the one I've been waiting for. Such an insanely overlooked gem from their back catalogue.
Me too. One of the most difficult to find U2 videos in a decent quality and now finally in HD. All I had was the Best of 1980 to 1990 VHS tape (but long time without a VCR) or low resolution uploads on TH-cam recorded off VH-1. And it's one of their best videos (in my opinion).
I remember my older brother had bought Rattle & Hum (an uneven U2 album) when it was first released and we'd liked this song. Then the music video was released and it took the song to a *completely* different level! Why don't they make music videos like that anymore? It's a work of art
Hi, I have been looking everywhere 2 get the original, at long last we have it, none of that blurry video we have had for so long, even wrote 2 U2 and asked them 2 give us the original, no reply, I guess enough of us asked, in the end, love it!!!
3:55 little guy makes his move against all odds. I think we've all been that character in some form or another at some point. It's why this parts hits me all the time
I agree with you; I've been him, too, desperately trying to connect with an unrequited Love who I can't understand at that time will never be mine. And I also relate to the Woman who feels a tender love for him and doesn't want to hurt him; but when she's kind, she inadvertently gives him hope. She doesn't mean to be the villain. But they will never be together, because she desires to be with another who is more suitable. It's a timeless Tragedy.
It is not often you see a song and video complimenting each other so emotionally, so perfectly. Once you have seen it, you can't imagine one without the other. One of my favorite music videos of all time.
Totally agree, I grew up listening to the song and hearing it on the radio but I never knew there was this equally beautiful haunting video that went to it. The beauty of the internet, you can discover these sorts of things
My mum walked down the isle to this song, even though I wasn’t born for the event, I still feel incredibly connected to this song. Cherish this song forever 💓
There’s something very spiritual about this song, it’s triggering in a positive way but many years later I still can’t quite muster the memories it provokes, which make me wonder whether it’s memories from my soul rather than this life’s memories my brain holds. I know it’s a meaningful memory filled with so much happiness and peace, it the afterglow of that memory teases me so, but it’s like paper thin beneath my human consciousness and the words as well as the musical rhythm of this song seems to tantalise aspects of that memory I can’t access. To me this song is of a prayer to God, a person’s personal relationship with God and wanting more of God’s attention rather than God’s unconditional love. Such a beautiful song
Irony is that Bono's explanation of the lyrics is that the song is sung by the woman, responding to the man trying to do everything for her...when all she wants is him

The music alone tells a powerful story and you can't help but *feel* it with all your heart. It builds into such an overwhelming frenzy of emotion and then the music dies away into a feeling of yearning and dashed dreams. Anyone who has suffered through unrequited love will understand.
I would rather love someone I cant have
than be with someone i cant love.
❤
Beautifully stated!
n'ah. better than dying alone imho
Both must be really painful, though.
@@michaelmartinez3674 no. GoT was played by Peter Dinklage.
@@michaelmartinez3674 Paolo Rissi is the Italian actor in the video. And Peter Dinklage is the American actor from Game of Thrones. They are similar, but not the same.
@@wanderer8989 OK, thanks 😊
The church is actually in Ostia Antica, not Ostia. They are both very near to each other though. The beach looks to be along the coast south of Ostia at the Cancelli, which are public beaches with large sand dunes.
Can’t wait. This is, without a doubt, one of the best love songs ever written. Definitely in my top 10 favorite U2 songs.
100%. Amazing how great songs hit completely differently at different times in your life and different times in the world.
@@valueinyou9931 That’s so true.
Yes it's gotta be
I get that the music is great, but did anyone see just how unbelievable the music video actually was? That was the _ultimate_ 1980s music video if I ever saw one. Fucking fantastic.
I wonder who the one die in video?
@@anitaafriani6176 I thinking about that too lol
El amor imposible❤
It is figurative. The little man buried his love for her to obscurity.
1:40 When she looks at him and knows;
1:46, when the Strongman looks at his friend and immediately knows how lost his friend is in love and knows it will only bring pain to his friend;
I always was so grateful to the strong man for being his friend;
3:16 with the ring and that smile;
3:24 hopping in the Strongman's sidecar, meaning his buddy had his back on the trip;
3:47 That heartbreaking smile he shoots her;
4:01 Dashed;
4:50 ending the only way it could ever end.
6:00 Tossing the ring into the grave because his love died (or did he die);
6:03 The Strongman sees the ring and shares the pain with his friend and knows what a loss this is for his friend.
Amazing video. One of the all time greats.
Edge said she died however how? That's always bothered me
❤😢
😢
The compassion the strongman showed for his buddy is beyond words and shows true heart!
@@rickyhunt4075 probably lost her life at the hands of her ex. She looked afraid of him
That guitar solo. I just have no words.
People and places may fade away but the song remains the same!
I have always believed that somewhere in the world there are still people who can feel the same emotions I feel when I listen to this timeless masterpiece.
No, it's just you
There are a few of us left
I have a slight suspicion that the guitar solo opens up the chakra centers and provides the perceiver with an intense moment of clarity.
Fewer and fewer of us, it seems...
But yes, you are not alone.
GAY
Thank you for finally allowing this to be on TH-cam. It is such a momentous video. Possibly the most momentous of all time. It means a lot to me.
The first time I heard this song, I cried. I then saw the video, and I wept even more. When my ex and I divorced, I listened to it too often, but it fit how I felt. I have never lost that love in my heart. No matter how old I become, this song and video still affect me deeply.
Oh my gosh same. It's been 4 years since we ended and it still makes my chest feel heavy
Start wild fires and fires 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😡😡
This is a classic. U2 should be very proud to have the courage to make this.
Yes, you are right
Nothing beats listening to U2 it really takes you back to a very happy place when the world was not so bad
In this case, early 1988
Amen, so true.
Partly because Reagan kept the country away from wars and brought us back from a recession
I was younger. Good times!
The world has always been "bad" depending on where you were or who you were or what color you were. You were ignorant about that as you were young. As they say- that´s bliss
I never knew there was a proper video for this tune. Wow.
Quite possibly one of the greatest and most emotional videos ever made. Breaks me every time she looks at him while she's with the other guy...
She's the best silent movie actress in this video. Very emotive.
one of the greatest love songs ever, by anyone.
Yes, it is!
This and Kathy’s Song
Yep
For two people to become a couple both have to feel the same way...Sadly this is a one way story that was bound to end in tragedy but that is what makes loving someone so special even if its never returned.
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You say you'll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night
You say you'll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbor in the tempest
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold
All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You all I want is
You all I want is
You all I want is
You

And can we take a moment to appreciate how good a guitarist The Edge is, and how well his unique style suits U2's songs? He has a bright, bell-like sound only with lots of reverb and washes... it's mesmerising.
The edge is fine .
This guitar solo in this song incredible.
Full of emotion.. suits the songs story.
One of the best solos in history, IMO
Not a big U2 fan, but I can't deny they're great. They particularly excel at " longing" types of songs. This is probably my favorite. The author probably knows very well what it's like not to get the person you admire.
My love anthem to my soulmate, somewhere out there, in spirit !
The bald dude with the mustache is the best in this video. Extremely loyal to his friend. That’s the vibe I received.
He acted really well. His few Seconds n minimal but perfect expression.
The acting in this silent movie is excellent.
Fitting that the Strongman has the biggest heart.
That's so fun to read 😂but so true!
The strongman has the biggest heart and compassion for his buddy!
This song is haunting to the core. A masterpiece of music and video that match each other and sends chills down your spine. The solo by The Edge is magical. It has been an honour to go to 5 concerts and see U2 perform live.
Nailed it with the word haunting always felt they were tapping into some celtic pagan spiritual well with stuff like this
Happy to say I’ve seen them once…. Finally.
In 2024
Forgot what a masterpiece this song and video are.
From Wikipedia:
Director Meiert Avis shot the promotional video in the town of Ostia, outside Rome on 18 April 1989.[4] Written by Barry Devlin, the video takes an unusual cinematic approach to the song, with U2 band members making only brief cameo appearances. The video tells the story of a dwarf played by Paolo Risi[5] who falls in love with a trapeze artist played by Paola Rinaldi, one of whom apparently dies towards the end. While there is disagreement amongst fans about exactly who has died, The Edge was quoted as saying it is the trapeze artist who dies.[6]
The video pays homage to Fellini, who was shooting his last movie, La voce della luna, only a few miles away from the U2 set, and also to Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks.[7]
Thanks for posting this. I wondered about the ending. I have seen the movie freaks. I remember the man who lights a cigarette with no arms.
Yes the dwarf throws the ring in the grave and walks away heartbroken.
I’ve seen that movie and it was the very first thing I thought of when the story started to unfold.
Bono doesn’t get the credit he deserves as a song writer.
This is Springsteen and Dylan level lyrics.
Bono, possibly the greatest of lyricists in contemporary music. I can’t think of anyone that equals him. On top of that incredible vocal melody and performance.
His bank balance says otherwise
His Daughter is beautiful a great actress as well. Thanks for sticking it out Bono with the same woman. Lots of respect. ❤
Always liked this song. But after seeing the video, realized that this is not just sound and vision, but truly art.
Music is Art.
Same, but actually realized after all these years watching the video it's actually a sad story...
Absolutely beautiful song, love it. The solo truly does have a cathartic release to it and the guitar riff itself is very nostalgic. I will pass this song down to the next generation of teenagers forever. I love this song, sincerely, a British 13 year old.
Nice analysis there-It's a real winner of a song by U2 and combined with the video it's really impactive.
It's fucking beautiful.
Im 16 and I will help you
U2 at their very best, When they get it right they are awesome
The Edge’s guitar at starting at 3:46 coupled with Larry’s drumming is just sublime. It’s one of his best solos.
agree 100% -- super underrated
The end of the '80s and end of a fantastic chapter for U2 "We have to go away and ... and dream it all up again.".Bono, N.Y.D 1990.
Bye to the Dalton Brothers.. hello to The Fly and the 90's, and the psicodelia
All the promises we make ,from the cradle to the grave
I had an old cassette tape with other songs yet most notabaly or memorably this one on it. It helped me get through my teenage years of Depression. That was many years ago now, God has set me free.
If you feel you need a mythical being to feel 'free', then you will never really be free. But I'm glad you survived your teenage years.
This music video evokes more emotions after it's 6 minutes than most films do in 2 hours.
Beautiful pieces of art working together as one.
I have the same feeling... and I bet everyone in here agrees
True
i cry everytime i play this, why do i put myself through this?
Search for the film The Million Dollar Hotel...written by Bono and soundtrack by U2.
....my. my true rocknroll will never die ! he. hey..
Rocknroll is here to stay!!
Probably the most beautiful video for a song ever made.
I remember my older brother had bought Rattle & Hum (an uneven U2 album) when it was first released and we'd liked this song. Then the music video was released and it took the song to a *completely* different level! Why don't they make music videos like that anymore? It's a work of art
Finally! 16 years' worth of TH-cam I've been waiting for this
Hi, I have been looking everywhere 2 get the original, at long last we have it, none of that blurry video we have had for so long, even wrote 2 U2 and asked them 2 give us the original, no reply, I guess enough of us asked, in the end, love it!!!
My favorite ever U2 song. A total classic.
Today, 34 years ago “All I want is you” is released, one of my favourite U2 songs💖💖
U2 IS THE BEST BAND OF THIS PLANET.

So who died? Can't figure it out lol
Totally agree, I grew up listening to the song and hearing it on the radio but I never knew there was this equally beautiful haunting video that went to it. The beauty of the internet, you can discover these sorts of things
Right now, I see the ring that the little person buys is going to be seen again at the very end of the video.
Finding love organically is truly a sense of beloved bliss.
Siempre a lo natural ❤
That scene where she's on the swing, smiling and that electric guitar comes in, shivers and tears. What a tune!
This is insane!! Still gets my jaws dropping after all these years.
My mum walked down the isle to this song, even though I wasn’t born for the event, I still feel incredibly connected to this song. Cherish this song forever 💓
Yep same here. Did your mum or other parent chose it? Just asking cus my dad was the U2 fan and it was his idea
This is The Best U2 Song.
For Ever.
ALL I WANT IS YOU.
BONO,
