    This is so fascinating! I was raised Protestant with the belief in literal, special creation, but I never would have guessed that it could be used to defend the traditional teaching of the Catholic Church. My wife and I were thrown for a loop when we joined the Church and learned about the ambiguity with which the modern Catechism addresses creation. It's been refreshing to revert to young-earth special creation and to know that the truth of it leads you the Catholic Church.

      I just started RCIA classes after 40 years of being hardcore Evangelical Christian. I am very encouraged to listen to this. I have followed the debate between young earth and old earth for a long time. I came to the conclusion that William Lang Craig and others place too much weight on scientific theories that may change. The Catholic Church has issues but it’s God Church. I’m convinced of that now.

      The only evidence I have. Is that I repented sorry I heard I repented I made an effort to live the gospel. And my whole life changed after 40 years of drugs schizophrenia depression and anxiety, Jesus Christ was the answer and he is merciful know my life is joyous and I feel the unconditional love. Jesus is the answer with him you can saw like an Eagle, and your cup is always overflowing. It changed my life I was suicidal attempts that many times many stays in hospital of the psychiatric variety. Holy holy holy is the Lord God Almighty. I have a great hope that many will return to Christianity in 2020. God bless you for your work

      Don’t you realize that history is repeating itself? 500 years ago the great debate was about Heliocentrism vs Geocentrism. If you didn’t believe that the earth was at the center of God’s creation then you weren’t taking God at his word. Now the debate is evolution vs creation and young earth vs old earth. See what I mean?

    Forgive my ignorance. I must have mistaken the great wisdom of the glorious saint and martyr Maximilian Kolbe and the wisdom of pious, holy, and saintly popes, bishops, doctors, and the holy and divinely inspired councils of the church. How does Adam being born from the womb of a pre-human make him necessarily the immaculate conception, if the womb he came from could not be bearing sin? This would be to say the dirt from which Adam was formed did not make him the immaculate conception. If the animal is no more a sinner that the dirt, and if the animal too came from the dirt, how does dirt becoming animal to form man any different than by the grandeur of time make dirt becoming man less of the need for Adam to be the immaculate conception. The beauty of evolution further explains and expounds on the great mystery of the vastness of God's creation in the cosmos. If God creates the vastness of space and puts every detail into the farthest corners of the universe as well as in the great mysteries we are currently wrapping our minds around like dark matter and energy, how much more great and glorious a creation that God would elapse billions of years to complement the visible universe (and whatever we cannot see) in the vastness of space. This great size of the created world along with the great elapse of time show we are just the beginning to what we can understand of the greatness of God's creation to culminate with the creation of man. Also this being a mere theory, which means if and when a more convincing idea is espoused that explains the evidence, or in the face of contradicting evidence, a better explanation can be presented, the theory of evolution in particular pointing to the beauty and love of God in his creative work to let us see how much He loves us to make magnificent creatures for us to imagine, as we contemplate the days of creation, so we can contemplate the days of the dinosaurs. Just as God in the order of creation simply does not make the heavens, the sky, and the earth alone, but spends another three days governing them each, so in evolution this further emphasises God's plan for dominion in the creation of man. For in the heavens, air and land, for the powers to come and become greater even amongst themselves, beyond what Moses recorded and the doctors meditated, show us how humble He calls even the great saints to and how much He loves us today to bring us to an aspect of divine creation not even revealed to Moses and the doctors of the faith. This being said, God too could be humbling us in our ignorance and arrogance to doubt the wisdom of the holy saints. In light of this, and considering how stupid we tend to be, this can also simply be God exalting the lowliness of our stupidity with a great mystery to contemplate.
    Second, the theory of evolution does not rule out that Adam and Eve were not created from literally the dust from the hand of God so as to not be born of a pre-human, yet God permitted pre-human appearing being to roam the earth before man for our glory. Just as there are angels lower than the higher, so there can be man like beasts to roam the earth in preparation of the world for the glory of God's creation in man.
    Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater and disallow the theory all together. Yes it is scandalous and easily leads to error, and is difficult to easily reach pious beliefs from it alone, but that is why God has revealed truth to us, that from what we can know of the empirical world can be understood in light of revelation, not the other way around. In my humble and ignorant opinion, the issue doesn't matter much as to necessarily how it all happened. We can consider various theories, yet ultimately leave what God doesn't reveal up to mystery, and rationalize what we can which God permits us to.
    That being said, it is a lot easier simply to agree wholesale with Moses, the doctors, and the Church when she teaches what is definitely true, instead of trying to figure out how something seemingly contradictory may be true until the Holy Church declares on it (examples being Jesus is God and man, God is good and allows evil. These are difficult concepts to understand and rationalize completely, but the church wisely leaves much of this to mystery in the particulars, but explains what is true and is divinely revealed).
    Note, when I say pre-human, I mean animals that appear like humans. I am not insisting on a fourth person (divine, angelis, human, and pre-human), I simply mean a non-person literal animal, that simply appears like a man, but is not a man, and is simply an animal.

      Unfortunately, they base their argument off of what I call “the Hovind definition of Evolution” in which they claim that, in order for the universe to be here, matter had to “evolve.”
      It’s a scientifically unrepresentative way for them to argue two threatening topics at once, the apparent age of the Earth as well as the Biological theory of evolution.
      It’s sucks, but unfortunately we usually have to play ball with their terms. Hope this helps.

However, after the original sin death and decay entered the world so the perfect order that was originally in the garden was lost. This is why things go extinct, we no longer live in a perfectly ordered world there is death, disease, extinction, natural disasters, etc.

    OK. The universe was brought into being by God 13.7 billion years ago. God formed the earth 4.5 billion years ago. Man was created by God out of hominids some, I don't know, a million years ago? and He did it by means of evolution.
    So why is the world so fouled up? Why so much evil? Well, as the fable of the temptation of Adam and Eve explains, we prefer our own will to God's will and prefer the goods of this world to the heavenly gifts God offers us.
    The first three chapters of Genesis aren't historical accounts, but they do explain perfectly why I, and you, sin. And the proto-evangelium gives the first glimpse of how we can overcome our sin.

    So Genesis is to be taken literally, OK. Then please explain how the earth could be created before light since light is the very glue that holds atoms together. So without that glue no planet earth.

    • @D347H1NC4RN473
      @D347H1NC4RN473 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Peter Carlson Light is not the glue that holds atoms together. Atoms are held together in two ways; internally (the sub-atomic particles stick together to make an atom) and externally (molecular bonds).
      Internally, there are two forces; protons and neutrons are bound by the strong nuclear force. The particle associated with this force is the gluon (i.e. the glue-on). Electrons are bound by the weak nuclear force. It's particles are W and Z bosons.
      Externally, atoms are bound together by either ionic bonds (as in a crystal), which is a complete transfer of an electron from one atom to another, or covalent bonds, which are incomplete electron transfer between atoms.
      So there is no need for light in any sort of atomic bonding.

    • @petercarlson811
      @petercarlson811 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John .Fielder The positive core of the atom and the negative electron are attracted through the Columb force and the same force is responsible for holding atoms together in molecules.
      The Columb force is a part of the electromagnetic force. Which particle is the force carrier for the electromagnetic force? Yes, you guessed it, the photon.

    • @D347H1NC4RN473
      @D347H1NC4RN473 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Peter Carlson Here are a few explanations:
      The Earth and light were created on the same day; Sunday, the first day. Now this could mean that they were created at the same time, resolving the problem.
      Also, with magnets, the force carrier may not be photons. Apparently they're called virtual photons, which are a mathematical construct used to explain quantum electromagnetics. So in some cases photons may be the force carrier, but in other cases, this may not be so. (Google virtual particles).
      Another possibility is that modern physics is wrong to claim that light is an electromagnetic wave. Maxwell may have been mistaken to deduce that just because both travel at the same speed they must be the same substance.
      That's it for my explanations. However, just because science at the moment may not be able to explain something doesn't mean it's wrong. Theology declares absolute truths from God. Philosophy is it's handmaid. But very little in science is absolutely true. Natural science should be used to save the appearances, and not be any sort of arbiter of absolute and undeniable truths. And this comes from a physicist.

    • @petercarlson811
      @petercarlson811 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John .Fielder Dear John, I know what virtual particles mean. It is is a general disturbance in the field which is the opposite of a well defined particle. Yet this disturbance is the actual force carrier when, for example, two electrons repel each other.
      If you are determined to interpret Genesis literally then there is a problem when Genesis clearly says that earth was created before light. Earth was already created in verse 2 and light came into existence in verse 3.

    This is wrong. Plain wrong. As a Catholic, I wholeheartedly disagree with this "Traditional Catholic Doctrine of Creation." The Catholic Church has already declared that Darwinian evolution was compatible, and not in conflict, with Christianity. Pope Pius XII first declared this 60 years ago and was reaffirmed by John Paul II and Benedict. In fact, Benedict wrote a book called 'In the Beginning...' A Catholic Understanding of the Story of Creation and the Fall', which criticized literal readings of the Bible and treating the Bible as a scientific textbook. Evolution is not a belief. It's a scientific theory. Catholics just have the added belief that God is still involved in the process, not divorced from the creation of man.

    • @richie8811
      @richie8811 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It is not merely opinion regarding the church's acceptance of evolution. The Church does allow for believers to accept "special creation" theory, where the Earth was created in six literal days. But it does not forbid acceptance of evolution either, which takes place over a much longer period of time, as long as God's role is acknowledged. The second creation path would mean the Book of Genesis is allegorical in nature, not literal. Pope Pius XII already stated in the encyclical Humani Generis that there is no conflict between the Church and the theory of evolution.
      Here is a quote: "The teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions . . . take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter-[but] the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God" (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36).
      And from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "The question about the origins of the world and of man has been the object of many scientific studies which have splendidly enriched our knowledge of the age and dimensions of the cosmos, the development of life-forms and the appearance of man. These discoveries invite us to even greater admiration for the greatness of the Creator, prompting us to give him thanks for all his works and for the understanding and wisdom he gives to scholars and researchers" (CCC 283).
      All three Popes have condemned and ridiculed the Intelligent Design theory, the 6,000 year-old Earth theory (Young Earth Theory) and literal creationism (reading the entire Bible as though it there are no genres of analogies of allegory. In other words, the entire Earth was covered after only just 40 days of rain, with Noah ark's literally hold all the animals, and so forth.
      My point is, we are Catholics. Copernicus was a Catholic priest and the scientist who put forth the Big Bang theory was a Catholic priest. We should be going forward in science, not cowering in a fetal position. God's majesty in this material world is far far more sophisticated than we could ever imagine. We should not be afraid.

      The theory of evolution is wrong. Plain wrong. First off, it is a theory defined as an "idea formed by speculation: an idea of or belief about something arrived at through speculation or conjecture" (definition courtesy of bing). Neither you nor I were present at the start of creation and neither have first hand knowledge as to how the world was created. Men came up with this theory based on their own observations and own ideas about how nature works...without God. Have you done any "scientific research" yourself to substantiate any of evolutionists claims or do you rely on what other people have told you, including so called "scientists". Have you personally seen and independently evaluated their research, and raw data? If not, you must believe and trust what they are saying. If so, you have faith in them.
      Moses wrote Genesis while divinely inspired by God. Why do you not have faith in him and what he wrote?

    • @TheKevin9000
      @TheKevin9000 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +richie8811 The statements by John Paul II and Benedict were opinion. In the Encyclical Humani Generis Pope Pius XII did not outright say that evolution is compatible with the Catholic Faith, he said the church does not forbid research and discussions (36), he also explicitly warns of the bold transgression of the limits and safeguards established by the Church by the sciences (38). Another important thing that is affirmed in Humani Generis is the affirmation of the Dogma that Adam and Eve were real and literal persons. (37)
      When people who put forward theistic evolution hypotheses, it always involves Adam and Eve being born to an animal population of "human ancestors" who did not have human souls. Then, there is some rigmarole where Adam somehow finds Eve, God raises their souls to that which he always intended through some great miracle (or billions of smaller miracles) and so on. These theistic evolution stories always have to affirm Adam's literal existence, while putting the population they want Adam to represent before Adam. Not only this, but theistic evolution conflicts with the doctrine of original sin, which brought death into the world, yet you are saying death was used to create. Listen, the world which we inhabit right now came into existence as a result of the fall, not one of the two creation narratives, theistic evolution is pure hubris because you cannot know what the world was like before the fall.
      A final point is that from the perspective of anthropology, it was not just biology that evolved but also morality itself. How could unsouled animals pass on a morality which they do not possess? We believe that Adam and Eve were created perfectly human before the fall. How are they then moral persons when theistic evolution theories require them to have sex with non-souled human ancestors in order to keep genetic diversity? You can't still believe in the Dogma that Adam and Eve were real and still believe that their evolution from lower ancestors is a reasonable theory.

      Went through a Faith Crisis a few years ago and eventually found my way back to the Catholic Church. In my search I did learn alot from the Kent Hovind series on creation; followed by a more recent updated version by Ian Juby of wazooloodotcom (Canadian guy). Though they are bible-belters and somewhat anti-catholic(especially Kent -- so fellow catholics be careful here); I couldn't argue with their scientific analysis of the evolution of evolution theory. I wondered what Catholics were saying on the issue when I came across this video and also some good work by Robert Sungensis. It is very interesting indeed. I will agree with all the gentlemen here mentioned, that one of the extreme faith-killers has been the presentation of evolution and its contradictions with the Bible. Something like 75-80% of college level students would attribute the loss of their faith specifically to the theory of evolution. This in itself would not be a valid reason to discount the theory; but the overwhelming evidence of how bad and unsubstantiated the theory is; should.

      ***** Thank you for you reply and I did check out your link...but it appears to be an attempt to reconcile Genesis with evolution (adopting a Helgian dialectic perspective...it's a real thing, look it up) also know as theistic evolution and it is wrong. It is contrary to basic philosophical principles-something cannot come from nothing, and something cannot give what it doesn't have. It is contrary to basic scientific principles-the second law of thermodynamics, the idea of entropy-systems do not spontaneously get more organized, they go from order to disorder...organized to disorganized...not the other way around (simple look around you for proof of this); evolution cannot be observed; it cannot be recreated in the lab (when was the last time a scientist created life from non life...outside of Frankenstein)...It is contrary to common sense (when was the last time human mutations were really helpful-outside of the X-Men movies). And it is contrary to the Bible and the Catholic faith-how did life begin then? If no Adam and Eve-no Original Sin and no need for Christ to die to remove it, Christ is not then the "Second Adam", Mary is not the "Second Eve", there is then no significance to the Church being "born" from Christ's side while he "slept" on the cross like Eve was created from Adam's rib while he "slept", sin and death did not then enter the world through Adam but death, decay, destruction, mutations must have been built in and put there by God in the beginning, Christ cannot be the "exemplar" of creation (the Alpha and Omega...the cornerstone), everyone who came after Christ must then have been "more evolved" than Christ, if man were made in the "image and likeness of God" what image and likeness where the precursors of "man" made in? It denies the Immaculate Conception. I could go on. It also starts a dangerous "slippery slope" if Adam and Eve weren't "real"; what about Noah and the flood, what about Jonah and the whale, are they "fake" why stop there...It denies the existence of miracles...why believe Christ cured the blind and deaf, raised people from the dead, etc. by simply commanding it with his words...when we deny God created the universe by simply commanding it with his "Word" (i.e. the "Word of God").
      I also thank and incorporate the response of kmo_9000, as well.

      The idiotic position is to believe that it was NOT a talking snake (or some other animal, at any rate) that tempted Eve. Why? Because angels are immaterial in nature. They have no way to appear to, or communicate with, human beings directly (by their own power). However, being spirits, they do have the capacity to possess the bodies of physical creatures under certain circumstances. So if the devil wished to talk to Eve, he would have had no choice but to possess the body of an animal (seeing as how there were no fallen humans to possess). I don't know whether the devil could force human language out of a reptile somehow or if that part was supplied by a special dispensation from God, but either way, your objection to a talking snake is complete nonsense.
