    Great video - my current marathon shoe rotation consists of the Puma Velocity Nitro 2, Boston 12s and Vaporflys. Will be running Chicago in the Alphaflys.
    I’d love to add the Superblast to the collection lol

    Great video I ran my half marathon in Brooks glycerin 19 as I like a coushion shoe.I am training for my first marathon so I got some training shoes saucony 21 and new balance 860 v12 but for the race day I was thinking saucony speed 3 as I would like a bit of a coushion shoe but also a speeder one to get a PB that is 5h but I'm 53 I would be happy with that .

    Chris, totally agree with everything you say in this video. I would maybe add 2 racers that are excellent for training, namely Saucony Pro 3 and NB Elite 3. Depending on the price at the moment of purchasing (discount or not).
    Without discount none of the shoes with PEBA foam make no sense. No matter Superblast or Metaspeed or Endorphin. The original prices are unacceptable.

  • @waltersinnett9095

    I think the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 2 probably deserves a shout (and the original if you can still get your hands on it; StartFitness still seem to have have a few sizes available at £85 which is a steal if you've got small feet).
    It may not be an top level race day shoe but at between £140 and £180 it's not priced like one (these days at least), it's a carbon plated shoe with a super foam, it's great for speed work, tempo runs and putting race pace efforts into longer runs, Pumagrip means it will not only keep you upright on anything up to and including light trails but will also last in a way many of those top level racing shoes wouldn't and perhaps most importantly it's also simply really fun to run in. Marathon training can sometimes be a real grind and having a shoe that you want to run in, fast and because of the plate/foam protects your legs fairly well for the next run is an absolute blessing.
    And honestly, despite describing it as not being a top level shoe above there isn't *that* much difference between it and the usual top options. It's perhaps not quite got enough cushioning for heavier runners over a full marathon and the feels verges more towards a traditional racing flat than the high stack approach that most of them take but there are a lot worse options to line up at the start line with, especially at the price.

      @waltersinnett9095 Got a pair myself, I'm around 76kg. First pair of carbon plated shoes so have been reluctant to use in training. I originally assumed that I might not make the marathon distance in them. My thoughts now are that I will do a few training runs in them and possibly my marathon (In Oct) any thoughts advice? Cheers!

    • @waltersinnett9095
      @waltersinnett9095 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@stancj471 Obviously hard to give any definitive advice without knowing specifics.
      One thing I will say is that I think everyone should do some of their training in the shoe they intend to race in. The last thing anyone wants is to get 20 minutes into any race (especially a marathon!) only discover that their shoes cause blisters/rubbing, are uncomfortable or just don't feel natural for you to run in. The only way to avoid that is to do some training in them so you discover any issues before you get to the start line. I know carbon plated super shoes are stereotyped as being fragile and only lasting 200k's or so but 1) I think that's an exaggeration for most of them and 2) even if it wasn't 200k will comfortably cover some training runs and the marathon itself.
      As for what parts of your training to do in them I'd pick out a combination of some long runs and some sessions where you're running at or above your intended marathon pace (and even better if you can combine the two together). Not only does that mean you'll be able to discover any issues you have in the shoes both over a long time period (for the long runs) and at an intensity level (for the efforts) but it should also set you up to have a better understanding of whether they will carry you the distance. You're not going to know what it's going to feel like to be in the final quarter of a marathon until you get to the final quarter of a marathon but if you've spent 2+ hours (and likely 3+) in the shoe with some of it at the same intensity you're planning to run your marathon then you should have a good idea if it'll be able to get you to the end.
      Another option for testing out what a shoe will feel like on tired legs without actually having to run a marathon in training is to stack some harder work on back-to-back days. You don't want to do this too regularly because of the injury risk and long term fatigue (although I note that the Hansen Marathon Method actually does this deliberately to replicate the fatigue and training effort of one really long run by having two or three short(er) but still pretty long runs on consecutive days) but perhaps the day after a session when your legs are still tired instead of doing an easy/recovery run try doing something at steady (or even threshold) pace or make that run a fair amount longer; you'll get to experience what the shoe feels like on tired legs and whether there's enough cushion/assistance there for you when your legs feel like they need some help.
      As a final note, while every runner is different and will find some differences between all the various carbon plated super shoes out there in the great scheme of things there often isn't that much of a change. The difference between a "normal" shoe and a carbon plated one can be really dramatic (when I took my first pair out for a long run I was taking 15s per k off my times in my daily trainer at what seemed like the same effort although some of that might just be the placebo effect) but within the super shoe category? Often much less of one. At the end of the day there's generally somewhere between 3.5 and 4mm stack height difference between the Deviate Nitro Elite and the other supershoes out there; around 10% at most. I think it would be a mistake to tell yourself that you couldn't possibly do a marathon in the Nitro Elite's because they're not protective enough only to put on one of those other pairs and find out that at 30k in your feet and legs still hurt; the mental blow from that could be pretty significant. That's not to say that if after having done some long training runs you genuinely find that your feet need more protection that you shouldn't consider switching but more just to note that the marathon is a long way which will take you a long time to complete and your legs are going to start hurting at some point; telling yourself an extra few millimetres of foam (and the £200+ you've likely spent to get it) will completely prevent that is setting yourself up for failure.

      @@waltersinnett9095 thanks so much for the time taken to reply. Lots to think about there and the points you have made reflected my thoughts/questions so that was really useful, thanks. I'm in the middle of my training plan (a Garmin HR based one) which does seem to load a heavy day on the Saturday before the long run on the Sunday. And so I might try the whole weekend on them and test. (Often a double run day on the sat inc intervals/hills).
      One of my main take aways is that I just need to test it and see! No way of knowing without testing as close as I can to marathon conditions. This should have been obvious that to me, but exactly as you touched on, with my first foray into carbon plated shoes means that I was concerned about knackering them out and not getting the most out of them with their limited lifespan.
      I'm aiming for a sub 3 and so I hope that will play into my hands a bit as there is relatively less time for it all to come crumbling down.
      Cheers again!

      @waltersinnett9095 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@stancj471 Glad I could help.
      One of the golden rules of running is that as little as possible should be new or a surprise come race day, from the kit you're wearing to your fuelling strategy to the shoes you wear. And while you won't know what it's like to do a full marathon in a pair of shoes without doing a full marathon in those shoes you should at least know what it's like to run on tired legs with them so when it does get to the later stages and it does get hard you've been there already.
      How long a marathon takes is an interesting one because yes, obviously if you run it quicker you've got less time on feet but if you're running quicker you're also often putting more force through the shoes with each step then you would at a more gentle pace. I'm not an exercise scientist and simply don't know if there's been any research on it but my suspicion is it balances out most of the time. It might be an underappreciated reason why higher cadence is better even if you maintain the same speed; by taking more steps each one requires less force meaning that what's primarily being taxed is your cardio, not your joints and bones... although that's purely me speculating.

The Boston 12 has worse upper; firmer midsole better for faster effort and better outsole more durable outsole than speed 3. Hope this helps both are great shoes with lots of overlap.

      Don't buy into the idea that a lot of running "influencers" push that you need five different running shoes. It's ridiculous. At the most three, one daily for slow easy and recovery runs, a faster long distance trainer like the Boston 12, and if you're competitive then one of the high end race shoes. I'm perfectly fine with my Adizero SL and Boston 12s (which I hope to use for the first time tomorrow). Previously I had the Asics Gel Nimbus 24, but they wore out way too quickly for the price, then I got the Boston 11s which while they caused a lot of foot and ankle pain, made me love running and they were all I used for the first half of the year putting in 800km on them, and they're still in great condition.
      I really think this idea of needing different shoes for recovery, easy, speed, long distance and racing is just a great marketing idea from the companies to make you feel like you need to buy more shoes, and there are a lot of influencers who push this idea too.

      I purchased both of my pairs.of Superblast on discount. The first time I paid 209 € and the second time 174 €. This last price makes sense, anything above that price makes no sense. I lately purchased NB Elite 3 for 190 € and Endorphin Pro 3 much earlier by 185 €.
      Even those prices are high, but the original prices of these shoes are absolute nonsense (240-250 €).
      In my opinion you should be able to squeeze out of any shoe at least 500 km, probably much more than that. Otherwise the shoe is total crap. So I'm not buying this story about some special durability of some particular shoe. I don't intended to run 2000 km in Superblast even if it's possible. Saucony Pro 3 is fantastic trainer, as well as NB Elite 3. So if they are cheaper, buy them instead of overpriced Superblast. I use Superblast a lot because it's more stable than Saucony Pro 3. But if that's not an issue I don't see a reason not to use Saucony Pro 3 over Superblast. I purchased NB Elite 3 over SC trainer. Why? The SC trainer was 40€ more expensive! Even if they were the same price (190-200) I would go with Elite 3. Soft and stable, excellent for any type of training. Apparently there is no difference in the outsole. Both are crap. Nothing is set in stone. You choose what's best for you, not what the marketing is telling you (you cannot use racer for training, what a BS).
