Just started really running over the last 2 months after losing 60 pounds and bought my first pair of running shoes about a month ago and love them so far, Nike React Miler. Got my first ever 5k coming up in a month and hope to start building my shoe rotation with a race day shoe next.

Do you find there's much difference between the speed 2 and the pro 2? I use the speed 2 for racing at the moment. Half marathon road races are the furthest I've done, but I'm stepping up to the Marathon distance next year and was thinking the progression of shoe would naturally be the Pro 2? Would welcome your thoughts.

@@garethpurkis872 I have the first version of the speed and pro. To me at least there definitely feels like there is more of an energy return with the pro. I ran intervals in them once so my first run wouldn't be in them on race day and the intervals felt almost effortless. Maybe placebo but the carbon plate is stiffer thus more return.

Got a small shoe rotation . Use Saucony Ride 13 for faster sessions (as I’m not fast). Then Glycerin/Triumphs that use for daily easy and long runs. Want a bigger rotation but I’m fairly light and perhaps not too bad form as shoes never run out! Got some on 1,400km that look and feel fine. Very annoying, want to buy more shoes!!

I'm new to running and by trial and error as well as youtubers recommandation I curently rotate the following:
    1. Recovery - Puma Velocity Nitro
    2. Tempo/Intervals - Saucony Velocity Speed 2
    3. Easy Run - Hoka Clifton 8
As for my next shoes I have two in mind:
    1. Race shoes - Nike Vaporfly 2
    2. Trail shoes - Hoka Speedgoat 5

My rotation is Saucony Endorphin Shift & Novablast v.1 for daily training, brooks Launch 7 for tempo and some intervals and the Saucony Speeds for intervals and races! Interestingly, until 600km always reached for the Novablasts over the Shifts for long runs as I felt the Shifts were noticeably heavier but since 600km I’ve started loving the Shifts and I feel they have retained their mid-sole better. It’s really amazing how I’ve changed my preference between those 2!

Great video for those starting to build a rotation. I think another benefit is when you're retiring a shoe, as you can build up mileage in the new shoe while wearing them in rather than having to do a complete swap.
I've ended up with a 4 shoe rotation. Daily: Nike Pegasus 37 Flyease, Speed: Saucony Endorphin Speed, Race: Nike Vaporfly. Overlapping with your suggestions quite a bit! Rather than a recovery I have a long easy run shoe: Nike React Miler.
Just finished interval session of week 11 of your intermediate half marathon plan. My Garmin thinks I'm peaking which is a good sign! Not sure I'll manage 1 hr 35 mins but feeling confident about a PB and 1 hr 40 mins. Will let you know!

    Great video Ben.
    My rotation at the moment:
Puma Velocity Nitro - daily / recovery
Saucony Endorphin Speed - long intervals, tempo, long runs
Adidas Boston 9 - short intervals
New Balance 1400 v6 - short intervals, track, races up to 5K
Nike Vaporfly Next % 2 - races longer than 5K
Salomon XA Elevate - hard trails
    Innov8 X Talon 212 - muddy trails / XC racing
Saucony Havok XC spikes - XC racing

My rotation is Nike Next %2 for fast racing, New Balance 1080v10 as a daily tarmac shoe, Nike Trail 2 for grass, bumpy or anything off road and finally New Balance 411v2 as just my normal walking around trainer. I can recommend them all and Ben's reviews has helped me with these. In particular for me with the 1080v10 and the Nike Trail 2's 👍

LOL. That's gotta be tough, man. It would require to run a lot in order to justify those purchases. When I pick up another shoe pair, I realise that I'm obliged to run hard in the foreseeable future.

  • @Sam-ss5hd

Daily/recovery : reebok floatride 3 (recommended by you!) or old pair or Ultraboosts
    Pegasus 38 : long/steady/tempo
    Adidas sl20: tempos/intervals
    Vaporfly: TT, Races, intervals
I've definitely seen the benefit of using lots of shoes, makes things more interesting and gives purpose to every run. Bought these all within a 4 month period so dreading replacing them all 😂

QoD: I am running 2.500 km a year and have a rotation of 4 + 1 shoes. To start, the "+1" is my trail shoe, Pegasus 36 Trail. As I don't do much trail, I don't really count them in my rotation.
Daily shoe: Nike Pegasus 37. Not my favorite, but ok.
Speed/tempo shoe: Saucony Endorphin Speed 2. Brand new, but Iove them already.
Recovery shoe: Nike ZoomX Invincible. Little bulky, but good for recovery and really slow long runs.
Racing & interval: Nike Vaporfly Next%. Yes, they are that fast. I actually have two pairs of them. And the first pair has 615 km of usage but are still absolutely ok for me, still very good.
In general, I use a shoe for ~800 km, before I replace them, meaning that a pair of shoes last for ~16 months, of course with a lot of variation. Finally, it's not more expensive to have several shoes to rotate, compared to 1 pair, except for the initial investment. The TCO / km will be the same (provided the have the same price and last the same no of km-s).

    Brooks Launch 8 - Workout
    Nike Next % Tempo - Workout/Race

As for me, i sort of min/maxed my shoe choice down to two shoes --- Hoka Wide clifton 8 for majority of my runs, and then Hoka rocket x for fast tempo runs / races. so really 80 percent of my mileage is in the clifton and 20 percent i the rocket x

I'm just beginning to properly build a shoe rotation. For years I just ran in one brand of shoe: you guessed it, the Peg, occasionally throwing in a minimalist free runner. At the moment my rotation is
Daily/All Purpose: Nike Air Pegasus + Saucony Ride (last couple interactions of Pegs disappointed me, so I've started experimenting, and find the Ride my fav alternative. Looking forward to really breaking in my new Peg 39s, as I've heard they've reverted back to earlier iterations.
Speed/Drills: I'm a big fan of the Saucony Kinvara. Like the most maximal minimalist shoe, feels like you're wearing a sock, while providing solid support, decent grip, no so great in wet weather, okay on light trails. I've found this has really helped with technique and gait. It's also a cheap shoe. I used some Nike Free runners in the past, but their shelf life was never good for me. I can get PBs in these, and they seem almost as durable as the Pegs.
Race: Vaporfly. it really feels like your on a cloud with a spring. Given the cost, and the short shelf life I'm really hesitant to use it that much. Mostly in Park Runs, and final training runs.
Recovery: I've been using the Hoka Bondi, nice cushy support that Hokas are known for, I wish break in time was a little shorter, but after a few solid longer runs, they become really comfortable. I used to try a cushioned Nike, whatever the predecessor to the Invincible was, but I could never find them on sale.

Thanks for the video!! Crazy where running is today. In my early running days (late 70's early 80's) Their were two kinds of shoes Canvas and Leather. Of course leathor eas viewed as the best material. It seemed that all athletic shoes were called gym shoes. It was New Balance in the mid-eightees that revolutionized running shoe technology. Keep in mind, people in Marathons were wearing shoes like the first versiions of the asics tiger, nike tailwind, and other similar shoes. So, the light and plush (which by todays standards would be low cushion shoe) . Interresting to now be looking at not just new technology but also having a shoe rotation!

I have wide feet so I really only use Topo and Altra. Currently I'm using Topo Ultrafly 3s for faster stuff, Topo Phantom 2s for long runs, and Altra Lone Peaks for trail.
I used to only wear Altra which have zero drop, but had a few issues with a tight achilles, so I found Topo which have a wide toebox and a small drop (3mm-5mm).
Combining these seems to have helped keep me injury free and finishing a marathon (finally! Always seemed to get injured during training).

    Long runs: Hoka Arahi 4
Workouts and short 5-10k races: Puma Liberate Nitro
Tempo/threshold runs and 21k races: Saucony Kinvara 11
    Trail:

    Plus a few minimalist shoes:
    Merrell Trail glove v1
    Merrell Vapor glove v4
    Vibram Fivefingers
    Nike Free RN
I've also got a pair of Altra Escalante v2.5 but I don't use them for running because I bought the wrong size and they're too sloppy :D

I think I've settled on this idea for a running shoe rotation. Three categories and two shoes in each category. Daily trainers, speed shoes and trail shoes. Got no need for a recovery shoe because I tend to just swim to recover, and not serious about running to have dedicated race shoes, I can just do races in one of the speed shoes.

For trail running I use the Hoka Speedgoat 4 and Lasportiva Mutant, very comfortable but for the best grip, in a trail shoe that I have ever used is the LaSportiva Mutant. Whether it is wet slippy, moss covered rocks, wet grass, scree... you name it these shoes will grip anything any everything. You can place your foot and know it will just stick. Definitely my choice for the Bob Graham round and anything long in the mountains.

And I do notice the difference in my runs with the different shoes.

Shoe rotation getting bigger and only missing thing now is a race shoe if I decide to go for road marathon (instead of trail ultras)
    - Hoka Cliftons for recovery road runs
    - NB 1080s for easy or long steady road runs
    - Hoka Carbon X2 for long, speedy road runs
    - Hoka Rocket X for short speed work/intervals
    - Hoka Evo Speedgoat for recovery or long runs on trails
    - VJ shoes for trails: MAXX for shorter runs, Ultras for longer runs. Both more aggressive on feet but needed when muddy.

Boston 8s almost all the time, except long races then it’s Boston 9s. I have a few Adidas Adios for shorter distances, but tend not to use them. Plus some Adidas Terrex for off road, including the goretex version.
Picked up 10 pairs recently in a sale, because I’m never going to the Boston 10.
Sorry, I’m not risking very different types of shoes, these work for me so that’s it. Not even an Adidas fan boy, just the fit is right for me

Hi Ben, great video. Interestingly enough I do my road races in the Nike Tempo Next %. I find them excellent for this. In total I have about 10 pairs of shoes. One I recently brought were the Asics Noosa Tri 13 and I was pleasantly surprised. Light, stiff ish and promotes quite a quick turn over and very comfortable. One pair I brought for a daily trainer was the Brooks Ghost 13 which I have to say I did not like. I found them energy sapping. I know a lot of people love this shoe but it just wasn't for me.

daily/recovery: a few pairs of True Motion Nevos, True Motion Aion; workout: Nike Tempo Next %, True Motion Solo; race: Adidas Adios Pro 2. They all work really well for me as a heel striker, including the Nike Tempo, I just bought another pair. BTW Ben it would be great if you could give your recommendation for non elite groups like heel strikers or people how may need some stability because of pronation (like the Adidas Pro 2's lateral bias that did not work for you).

I love this Ben......if you were brand loyal and the entire shoe rotation had to be one brand, would Nike just edge out Asics, then Saucony and Adidas following, POSSIBLY WITH PUMA a very, very rapidly improving 5th
Hopefully the high-end tech midsoles, become mainstream across all midrange shoes within 12-24 months, example Nike Peg 40, should be predominantly ZoomX and also flyknit or atomknit.

Tempo/Threshold: Saucony Speed 1, Hoka Rincon 2 (too narrow), New Balance Prism version 1
