As always, legendary advice! As for hangers I use thick hangers for my sweaters as well as my coats and jackets. As for pants I use pinch hangers. I find that the creases stay and no wrinkles!
I have been hearing about Anson belts for awhile. I think that you just pushed me over the edge. I appreciate the effort you put into creating quality videos.
I use wooden clamp hangars. If you have the room on the bottom of your closet then they are great. I never fold trousers over a hangar. Socks? Your choice of course. I don't know if I ever purposely chose their color for any particular reason. I keep it simple now; tan socks, navy socks and white sox. I fold sweaters and place them into individual boxes. They are called photo storage boxes and come in sizes like 11x14,16x20. Thick wooden hangars are used for coats and jackets. Blazers are not always defined by brass or metal buttons nowadays. Some have really nice buttons that of course can be changed by the user. Thank you for your videos John.
John you have good style. I'm in my sixties. My hair is grey now. I'm finding dark colors look okay now because of my hair color. When i was younger i avoided dark colors.
I really like your channel content, it has helped me level up my dressing. Use to be very confused as in what to buy and how to wear but you’ve made it very simple. Thank you 😊
Just found you and love this kind of content for my helping my mature, very casual husband up his fashion game. Future video requests: casual denim outfits (jeans and t-shirts/polos) and shorts. We live in AZ where shorts are essential!
Thank you. Your videos truly brought out my new Gentleman’s wardrobe. Have 3 Ansons so far n will get more. Tiege is great too. Boots are next on my list.
Another great video! Thanks for explaining the difference between the button up and the button down shirt. I used those terms interchangeably for most of my life! Once I learned the difference, it made a lot of sense.
Great info! I’m gradually shedding my t-shirt/jeans fashion mindset. As affluent as Hilton Head is, most men’s styling falls under two categories: casual beachwear or preppy golf attire. I’m aiming for something else.
Thanks John, I never had anyone teach me how to dress neither my family nor friends. I have learned so much from your videos, appreciate all the hard work. Also, miss the beautiful music intro in your videos.
gave me a few insights on what items my wardrobe requires and why...loved the differences between the types of shoes we wear, the types of jackets we wear and where we should wear them...Thank you.
I know you were looking for ideas on what to concentrate on John. This is the kind of stuff I love to watch. I hope you get a lot of views on this video.
Thank you for the tips. Aways wondered about the difference between an oxford and a derby as I usually buy my shoues based on broguing, ie. wingtip, captoe, whole cut etc. This was helpful.
Excellent video John, Thanks. I can attest to the quality of Anson Belts. I just got a 3 pack last week and love them. Much better than traditional belts.
Great explanations on the differences of terms and meanings in men's wear. Your channel has been an incredible source of information as I make changes in my wardrobe and life. My coworkers and friends are noticing and commenting positively on the changes I've made by following your advice. Thank you!!
Legend. Hello John. Thank you for a wonderful video. I was confused for a while to figure out which shoes can be casual and which one dressier. Also, I'm glad that you mentioned about matching the belts and the shoes, the best possible way. Always looking forward to your next wonderful video. Stay safe and have fun! Cheers.
I can’t believe you felt it was necessary to tell men these things, but when I look around and see how men are dressing it probable is necessary. Keep trying to bring us back from the sartorial distaste we’ve become.
Thanks for the knowledge being shared in this video John. I always like your videos and the in depth details that you share, the contents that you chose and the way you talk....very impressive!!! Lots of love and best wishes!!!
Great informative video. This is the kind of video I have been looking for. I’m new to the style game and it’s great to know just the basics. Keep up the good work! Scott C, Florence, Mississippi
Good stuff here John, thanks for the clarifications. I'm newly single, and trying to level-up my style, so I find your content very informative. I'll definitely check out Anson and Tiege.
At 00:33, I believe that shoe is neither an oxford nor a derby; it is in fact, a blucher, which is more of a type of open-laced derby with small leather eyelet strips sewn over the quarters,
Is a brown Oxford with broguing more formal black a plain black derby? Probably not. Style, colour, broguing and the last feed into its formality. Re suit jacket - if you dont wear it often and its all you have then its passable with say grey flannel pants. This would work better with wool than say anything else. You can also reconstitute a suit jacket by changing its buttons.
C'mon, John. You're part Italian. The Italians call wearing trousers with a suit coat "spezzato" and pulled off correctly, looks great! I wear a dark blue double breasted suit coat with beige pants and looks terrific!
So I am over 70 and I like to look good when going out. But I don't wear suits but once or twice a year. I also live in SoCal and enjoy the relaxed dress code. So would you say 6 pairs of slacks jeans shirts etc..
It's essential to know these rules because unless you know the rules you won't know how to break them. And when you knowingly break the rules what do you get? Style and personality.
Hi John, I've noticed a lot of people (football sports casters) wearing suits and dressy sneakers. What are thoughts and where do you get your dressy sneakers?
Do you agree that when wearing a suit, one should always wear dress shoes with laces not slip on loafers? This is what I was told a long time ago and I believe it to be true just looks better!
Generally, loafers are considered more casual, so sometimes in a formal setting it can look a little bit off with a suit. However, a spring or summer wedding, the loafer would be totally appropriate.
John without me researching the net to what sunglasses are in style?? Small lenses vs large lenses and frames? What is the right sunglasses for what apparel and so on??? In my opinion I can omit the Ray Ban aviation one's. I would love some insight from you in this area. Thanks John 👍.
John, What do you suggest I wear for a college graduation? A polo shirt with dress shorts? Or a dress shirt with slacks? This graduation is taking place in North Carolina.
I'm not very fashion conscious, and I live in a resort area where everyone dresses casually. But, there are regular events involving food and often dancing. The ladies almost all dress elegantly. The guys, not so much. I try to honor the ladies effort to look good by walking in wearing a jacket (though due to the heat it might not last long). Ladies (and guys) constantly compliment me for dressing well and the only thing different is the jacket. I don't wear "Blazers" because of the gaudy buttons and it seems like I should be on a boat. I don't wear a "sports coat" because they are usually loud and hot and it seems like I should be British.
I've been watching your videos for a week now. So I did subscribed to your channel late last knight. So looking back at the way I have dressed over the years and have never made any changes, out side of work. A blue collar worker for most of my career and at sixty four years old. For all of those guys out there. What would you think? I'm not sure they could pull this type of dressing off. For most family and people I know it would be a shock.
I started upgrading my style a couple weeks ago (age 51). I got fewer comments than you might expect. Since I lost about 30 lbs. just before the upgrade, that's my "reason" why I'm not wearing the same clothes as before. They don't fit, and I gave them away. Remember, you don't have to make a *huge* upgrade to look better. Make sure your clothes fit well. I switched from wearing graphic t-shirts to solid color t-shirts, or the occasional linen button-up shirt. I started wearing linen flat-front shorts rather than baggy cargo shorts. Those weren't major changes.
Why does the side pocket stitching need to be cut? I've heard some people prefer to keep those shut because you're not supposed to use them anyway and that way they stay in shape.
John, I have been noticing some of your great shirts. I have been using MTailor and have been happy with their service to find the right size for me. However, I am looking for a wider variety of fabrics to choose from. Some of the plaid shirts have been very nice. Any suggestions?
I keep looking for those all-white shoes without logos you keep harping about. Hard to find in stores. Would like to get a pair but I have wide feet and need to get my own inserts in there as well. Seems like all of these white shoes online are either narrow or don't come with a large toe box. May just to have to get a New Balance white shoe with their logo on the side. Any suggestions?
Great tutorial on the basics of menswear. So interesting the patterning on the brogues. I always loved the look of a two toned spectator as well. Call me an old school legend. :)
I feel foolish admitting that I don’t know how to lace the laces you’ve shown in the shoes John. Perhaps the next time you speak about shoes, could you incorporate a few minutes to show how it’s done? 😉

One of your best style videos John! All the visual and explanations were excellent! Cheers John!
Many thanks Chris! Thanks for watching!
Another suggestion is to button the collar button when the shirts are hanging in the closet. They will last a little longer
Absolutely! I always button the top button when my shirts are hanging in the closet.
I started doing this even with my polos. Great tip here!
I do this too. It helps maintain the collar longer.
Thanks again for the visual instruction on how to tell the difference between Derbies and oxfords thanks again

Thanks for commenting Wren!
Maybe now I'll finally start taking hangers seriously!
Thanks John.

Hey John I'd love to see a youtube short doing a mix and match of your Anson Belts.
Oooh, good idea! Thanks Will!
@@40OverFashion to be more specific. A mix and match of belts and buckles. I was gonna place an order and couldn’t figure what I needed.
A nicely illustrated, well explained, if incomplete, survey of men's fashion basics. Thank You ...

Thank you!
Good points & I just ordered some Anson belts/ buckles.

Great message, John
Thank you!
Such great explanations! I always love watching your topics. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks Kirk!
I typically leave the waist pockets of my jackets sewn closed to keep the shape of the jacket.
Yeah, that’s not a bad idea with a very formal suit jacket.
Thanks for another great and informative video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks John. Great info. Thumbs up from St. Pete Beach, FL.
Thanks for watching Chuck!

@@40OverFashion I just wish you had more affordable options.
Great video! So my question is in the average closet how many pants/jeans shirts suits shoes etc should you have?
Thanks Phil! Pretty tough to answer because it all sort of depends on your work and lifestyle.

Could you do a video of how to properly roll up sleeves on a long sleeve shirt?
Fabulous! Sounds like it might be time to invest in matching socks! Haha....
Terrific
Hi John, I've noticed a lot of people (football sports casters) wearing suits and dressy sneakers. What are thoughts and where do you get your dressy sneakers?
Yeah, that style is getting very popular and a lot of brands are making them. I have a pair of Cole Haan.
