I have an idea for a theory: What is the actual nutritional value of the stuff Link eats in BOTW (including the specific animals the meat comes from)? How much weight would he gain in reality, and would the calories he burns off during his adventure actually offset all that?
So, basically what you're saying is that the Mario Tennis rackets have a severe design flaw where the handles are manufactured separately from the rest of the racket and rather than being properly anchored together, they have a simple weak adhesive attaching them. Alternatively, there's a tennis-racket conspiracy that intentionally introduces defects into the handle... Essentially, any entrepreneur-engineer Toad could make a fortune by revolutionizing the racket manufacturing process, unless the conspiracy exists .
So I wasn't the only one to thnk that, huh. That makes me woder if any common wood? to aluminium / titanium / carbon glue can break under those forces?
+linkolek I'm not sure exactly what glues would work, but there definitely are adhesives that can delaminate under those forces, and there's likely to be more between carbon fiber and wood (because usually the same adhesives work for both of those) (Thanks, class on fracture mechanics! Obviously the ball either has some kind of energy other than kinetic energy, (it sure looks that way) or it has an explosive charge, (it also looks like that.).
He didn't even mention that to hit a ball fast enough to break another person's racket, you would break your own racket Edit: yeah I was wrong thanks everyone for helping me see why
@@mollie.28.15 Yes it would; air resistance would slow the tennis ball down, so MORE force is being applied to your own tennis racket than the opponents. I guess the game isn't as realistic as matpat thought.
anony mous No, because the initial momentum of the ball when you hit it is 0, not a negative quantity, thus the change in momentum is less, thus the force is less. Also, air resistance has extremely neglegible effect in these calculations. This is basic physics.
Think of it as this: Say the gorce needed to break the opponent's racket on a serve is 150. You hit it from going 0 towards the right, to 100 to the right. If you return it, with 100 force(A.K.A. -100), it will STOP in the game. You need to hit with DOUBLE the force the server hit it towards you(A.K.A. -200). So, they could over-compensate and hit it with too much force.
@@emmanuelzermeno1588 the Jr 9n the end of a name is a bureaucratic nightmare in every case I have ever known. Looking at the pictures of the rackets breaking apart and at their shape, I think it is more likely that the Rackets are made from wood. A little research shows that Ash is a fairly common wood that is used to make wooden rackets, it has a shear Strength of 10 MPa. Secondly, the racket acts as a lever. In this case I would treat it as a Cantilever. I don't have the expertise to count pixels and compare, but for sake of argument lets say the racket is 72 cm, this falls in regulation size and judging from the screen shots the racket is about 1/2 the size of Mario, it also makes for easier math. The "sweet spot" for a tennis racket can vary, how ever, if we assume that it is 1/4 of the way from the top of the racket and that the top of Mario's hand is 1/4 from the bottom that would mean we have a cantilever with a length of 360mm. To find the force exerted on the racket at the top of Mario's hand we use (Force*lengthFromOrgin)/CrossSection = (65N*360mm)/740mm^2 = 31.622N/mm^2 = 31.622 MPa Meaning the 65N the ball generates is about 3 times the force needed to break a racket made of Ash wood. Of course an actual racket would be made of laminated wood, for which I could not find a shear strength of and would vary greatly anyway depending on the adhesives used. Then again, it is 3am, I may be wrong about all of that.
We could also consider that, because the cross section of the broken racket is solid, it may actually be made of two pieces and welded together. This would be weaker than a solid piece of metal, too.
Thirdly, the player swinging the racket is also applying force to swing the racket toward the ball, which also gets amplified at the breaking point via above mentioned lever effect, further reducing the required speed for the ball to break the racket.

You also seem to have confused Special Shots (burns entire Zone gauge and breaks the racket in a single hit if not blocked by returning with perfect timing) with Zone Shots (burns part of the Zone gauge and breaks the racket in three hits at best).

As somebody who's worked with 3d models I know it's much easier to animate the racket coming apart at a segmented piece such as near the handle. So in your joke about being too hard to implement in the game is somewhat true as it happens so quick so wouldn't have to be as precise looking in-game and is only shown to represent it happening compared to promo photos which use higher quality models that are pre-rendered and don't have to worry about causing lag as they're just photos. It's like claiming the balls used to represent Mario's hands in 64 are what his actual hands look like and not just a representation do to limitation. This just shows despite rapidly advancing hardware, cuts like these made to only represent something and not it's exact physical properties in their world are still being made today, whether it be time constraints, memory, stylistic, or just not wanting to spend hours of modeling individual pieces and keeping a low poly count on the base model to improve stability. Long story short it's more likely promo images are more trustworthy to go on as it's more likely to better represent what's actually supposed to be happing as the modelers have a lot more control and less restraints on properly portraying what's actually happening in them. (However not all promo pics and renders are perfect since cloth generators, alpha channels, etc can act a little goofy and when you're rendering an extremely high resolution model it takes a long time and a lot of money so if something small messes up the company may just chose to use the image anyways rather than go back into the model, try to edit the issue and not make it worse and then hope it's fixed for the next render attempt.) Where are my fellow Notification Squaders?! I hope you have a perfect day The Game Theorists You should play the game is called memefeud. com, think it would be a fun video if you played it!
I've only just started the video, and I'm calling it now: MatPat is going to use the racket strength in Mario Tennis Aces, compare it to the strength of IRL tennis rackets, and use that as a 'ruler' to determine how forceful the tennis ball is upon being hit. Using that result, he'll come to the conclusion that the ball could _kill_ any of the playable characters in Aces, assuming it doesn't break itself. Let's see how close I got.
@@lacklusterkidd except he was wrong as matpat used Mario's height to determine that everything is to scale and never actually talked about the length of the racket.
Well duh. Still fun. Anyways one thing i dont think he mentioned is the fact that the same shot that can kill can be returned (blocked) with the same racket. So rackets breaking has more to do with wrong technique from the player
To whoever's interested, there is a blog on the Internet called 'What If' by Randall Munroe which taps further into that last question: Just what would happen exactly to the ball at this speed? In that blog he talks about baseball and the ball travelling at 90% of the speed of light but I think the outcome would be similar. I highly recommend you read it if you want to know more about wacky science questions.

hahaha matpat, lets face it, by the amount of deadly and dangerous things he has faced in the mario kingdom based on your other videos, like the shell, the race, the golden bullet and all. Maybe just maybe, the mushroom residents are a lot stronger than we think. Based on this theory i had in mind. Their body must be stronger, considering the fact that the gravity in the marioverse is stronger. They dont notice it because they are born into it, but their bodies can fully adapt to the high gravity worlds they are in. Now if you put a human body in those conditions they will die from the pressure. Factoring all these, maybe just maybe we can conclude its part of the reason why they are stronger. I mean i use this based on another of your theory superman, where you calculated the gravity of krypton to figure out how strong the gravity there is, cause clark is superman on earth but regular man on krypton (besides the weaker sun of course). A food for thought mat. I am hoping this could be an interesting theory for you.
Reminder that it actually takes multiple hits to break a racket in Tennis Aces, so the force would actually be less as the racket is damaged over time rather than breaking in one hit. Also, it probably would have been better to calculate it as if the rackets had broken at a hollow neck, as the official art shows, rather than basing it off of the cheap graphical trick used to split the rackets cleanly in half in-game.
Zone Shots take multiple hits, but Special Shots only take 1. But yes I agree that it would've been better to compare it to the artwork. And I doubt the rackets are solid on the inside.
To be precise, they are made from a liquid cheese which is deep-frozen for rigidity, extremely cold. The neck and rim are internally reinforced, which is why the racket breaks at the handle.

I’m literally watching this doing my solid mechanics homework. I was like what unit is shear strength again and then MatPat was like SHEAR STRENGTH IS EQUAL TO 207 MEGA PASCALS and I was like ooooo ... thanks MatPat
Upcoming theory: The Mushroom Kingdom is in the same world/timeline as Fallout.
Xian nice try, but the mushroom kingdom is the precursor to adventure times land of Ooo
shut up, please, i'm still in denial about that..
I thought maybe Hyrule was in the same universe as ours in the future
so, the one thing to take away from this, the mushroom kingdom makes really shoddy tennis rackets?
How to REALLY break Mario
1. Play Mario Maker
Enough said
Mario plex
depends on the player

Could you please make a theory on Adventure time' s timeline???

Dude that’s something you ask for on film theory, find the right channel please
OMG You mentioning watch game theory in class reminded me of the time I tricked my teacher to play the death star episode because i was in a microeconomics class
I feel like Nintendo is making their games more realistic so you stop calling them deadly lmao

but he talks about physics not math?
I wish my teacher did that!
Michael Wang physics involve math lol
You have an awesome teacher😂😂👏👏👏
now that I'm currently taking a physics class, the physics discussed in game theory episodes make so much more sense and are more relevant to me lol
That means you're not studying enough. This guy uses too many simplifications.
well you're not wrong tbh. I didn't say I was good at physics .-.
Chris M wow your fun at partys
Chris M some of us aren’t genius’s at physics you know?
@StormyNormy apparently some people aren't geniuses at grammar either.

Mat: tell this to your teacher

Yeah, I thought to myself. If he actually meant "cubic centimeters". (now that's a mystery to solve)
You look like Kermit the frog
Mario, where tennis balls hit like bullets and bullets hit like tennis balls...wait WHAT?!?!
Mario’s breaking point is actually hidden in bowers castle. The projector. He is a hologram. Keep asking questions.

You know how bad I'm at tennis?...One time I tried to hit the ball I somehow got it stuck at that hollow part under the racket.

In Mario Tennis? That's easy. Just hire Waluigi! That's the game he was made for!

What I got out of this: I want a Mario wrestling game with weight classes.

I can finally understand the Physics jokes cuz I’m in AP Physics now :D
Oh wait
Pro tip: The answer is always mg*tan(θ).
That was last year for me.
Sadly I still don't understand Physics.
:(
DigiTan000
I dont do AP physics so could you pls explain why you should always awnser a question with that
DigiTan000 Didn’t learn that yet lol
Just kidding! It shows up in one *very* popular type of physics question: the banked turn.
Plot twist:the tennis balls are made of concrete and lead
And uses a p-balloon to bounce
I've only just started the video, and I'm calling it now:
MatPat is going to use the racket strength in Mario Tennis Aces, compare it to the strength of IRL tennis rackets, and use that as a 'ruler' to determine how forceful the tennis ball is upon being hit. Using that result, he'll come to the conclusion that the ball could _kill_ any of the playable characters in Aces, assuming it doesn't break itself.
Let's see how close I got.
Failure
RetroBeetle it’s like you wrote the script
@@lacklusterkidd except he was wrong as matpat used Mario's height to determine that everything is to scale and never actually talked about the length of the racket.
Are you pshcic if you are can you read my mind i will give you umm 4G
Well duh. Still fun.
Anyways one thing i dont think he mentioned is the fact that the same shot that can kill can be returned (blocked) with the same racket. So rackets breaking has more to do with wrong technique from the player
Matpat: Things are more expensive than ever!
The Great Depression: I'm about to end this man's whole career.
Technically things were less expensive than they are now, but people had less money.
I like these "over analyzing numbers" episodes better than the lore episodes
How many tails does it take to break a titanium racket?
300,000 miles prower.
Dylan Singewald nice 💯
Lol get it

Elena Bobrova lmao
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA not funny
To whoever's interested, there is a blog on the Internet called 'What If' by Randall Munroe which taps further into that last question: Just what would happen exactly to the ball at this speed? In that blog he talks about baseball and the ball travelling at 90% of the speed of light but I think the outcome would be similar. I highly recommend you read it if you want to know more about wacky science questions.
Oh yeah, that was the first thing I thought of as well when I saw those ball speeds. MatPat's been reading some WhatIf if you ask me.
That book is my jam!
ههههههههه
You should do Prince of Tennis in film theory. That anime shows the real power of tennis as a weapon of mass murder. Mario Tennis Ace crumbles in front of it.
MatPat you lied to me. It took me FOUR clicks to install Honey. I am insulted.
Really? My touchscreen took 1 click.
I'm on a laptop, so it might be different, but it really did take four clicks!
Lydia Feltner then you did it wrong lmao

9:50 Just wanted to say thanks for putting that image in my head ☺🥰
hahaha matpat, lets face it, by the amount of deadly and dangerous things he has faced in the mario kingdom based on your other videos, like the shell, the race, the golden bullet and all.
Yessssssssss
Smart
Heh
I'm impressed
This is a copy pasta
Reminder that it actually takes multiple hits to break a racket in Tennis Aces, so the force would actually be less as the racket is damaged over time rather than breaking in one hit.
Also, it probably would have been better to calculate it as if the rackets had broken at a hollow neck, as the official art shows, rather than basing it off of the cheap graphical trick used to split the rackets cleanly in half in-game.
Zone Shots take multiple hits, but Special Shots only take 1.
But yes I agree that it would've been better to compare it to the artwork.
And I doubt the rackets are solid on the inside.
Also note that it takes incorrect returns for the racket to get damaged in the first place
So that begs the question what tactics are the mario&friends attempting that differentiates a successful block from a broken racket
Great video, but at 10:16 you missed an important detail: all the rackets in Mario Tennis Aces are made of cheese.
Wait? Really?
anyone else want to watch serina Williams
To be precise, they are made from a liquid cheese which is deep-frozen for rigidity, extremely cold. The neck and rim are internally reinforced, which is why the racket breaks at the handle.
