Today we continue our look at the Emperor and Malcador playing a game of tactics in preparation for the Siege of Terra. And things have just got very interesting indeed!
The events today are from the short story "The Board is Set". As always I really recommend you read the novel for yourself first! I think you missed the double hint there with malcador the jester and emperor
The fool reminds the king he's mortal. The king had to sacrifice himself. He knew the loyalty of malcador would always already lead to malcador sacrificing himself someday.
The joker card is also a card that can take the place of another card, just as malcador took the place of the Emperor on the throne.

Better yet, it was at that moment he realized that Horus was partially right and he had indeed become a tyrant.

The fact that the Emperor loved his sons and his friend is unquestionable but whether or not he is capable of feeling that love after ten millennia of nonstop torture is another question. After all there is a reason Guilliman walked away from his meeting with the Emperor feeling like a tool rather than a son after his resurrection.
It's not a fact though, the whole father-son relationship is looking more and more like another manipulation technic from the Emperor.

The different views, from different writers, make this deliciously ambiguous.
I think it's a little of both. The Emperor when whole had at least some paternal feelings for the Primarchs, as shown here he refers to them as his sons when the only person there is the one person he may view as a friend. However by M 41 his soul is in constant torment and is fragmenting. Probably all that is left is a core hanging on for survival. At that point everything is a tool to use to hang on just a little longer or escape.
Edited to add: In Master of Mankind, bear in mind who he's talking to about Angron, a member of the Cult Mechanicus who views him as the perfect scientist. Completely unbound by weak human emotion. Of course the Emperor will play up to that view.
mariusdire but why play it up it doesn’t really accomplish anything significant also how do we know big E didn’t play it here that whole jesters and kings thing could just as easy be the emperor insuring that his friend will sacrifice himself when the time comes, I mean where I stand on this whole thing is I don’t believe the emperor loved his sons yes there were those he trusted like the lion and even favoured but neither proves his love for the primarchs.
as for Malcador I do suspect he did like he definitely trusted him more then the primarchs but despite that I think the emperor was being honest when he was saying I will cast you aside and not think twice about it I mean the guy has killed billions of people innocent and guilty alike and he willing to sacrifice arguably his most devoted son to Secure victory so why should he hesitate when the reaper calls for his friend life?

I’ve watched pretty much all of Rho’s videos at least once. This one remains my absolute favorite. Getting into the depth of the E’s relationship with Malcador… just wow.
The Emperor loved the Primarchs imagine if they had never been taken by the Chaos Gods. I would love to see a alternate history where the Primarchs were never taken and grew up with the Emperor and Uncle Malcador.

@@wchamp170 This video proved he did even in Private he referred to him as his sons , he could have said my primarchs or creations but he said sons and he was visibly upset that they fell to Chaos. Now were they generals to be used in Wars yes , but he still loved them not as much as humanity but enough that he was hurt to have lost them. The Emperor now is A broken corpse in body and mind and sees his people on the verge of collapse and has no choice but to be straight to the point when Gulliman returns. Gulliman is upset yes but he knows this isn't the same Emperor as he was during the Great Crusade.

@TheyCallMe Doug Lorgar was a Fanatic yes the Emperor could have handled it better but Lorgar would have been seduced by chaos anyway and Magnus had already been entranced by tzeench while it was to save his Sons he none the less was snared by the lord of fate if the Emperor had told Magnus the Chaos Gods could have found out sooner about the webway project.
If I remember it correctly, Guilliman found out quiet the opposite when he returned and had a talk with Daddy E.
Mortarion was even taunting him for that when they clashed some time later.
This tells me one thing: whatever you think off the emperor, you will always underestimate him!

The Emperor forcing Malcador to think like Horus is one of the most moving and tense passages I have ever read in the entire Heresy.
The psychic awakening could this be a return of Malcodor as bringing back the emperor is abit to end game for me.

I think theres also a very interesting duality being portrayed in this story. The Emperor refers to the Primarchs as his "sons", and speaks as if he values them as more than just tools. At the same time, however, hes also playing a game with pieces that represent the primarchs, manipulating their positions and strategic value. It almost makes you wonder if thats how he saw The Great Crusade/Heresy? Was it just a game to him?
Chaos plays the Great Game, of course it is a game. The Emperor of Mankind is also playing their game.
A very serious and deadly game for the very soul and existence of humanity. There's no enjoyment in it and it cannot be won without tremendous sacrifice, if at all.
I see "the Emperor" as a role he has to play with utmost conviction, but there still being a "man" at his core and these two sides might clash. He still has to play the role of the Emperor in the end though.
The values of the Man and Ruler, sometimes one has to step aside for the other. In a good lord the cares of the man are sacrificed for the benefits of the Ruler.
As much as the he loves his sons, he must make decisions for the empire as Emperor.
When I think of the Emperor, I think that nothing he did was just a game. Every game he played was of great importance. He said it in one book (and I can't remember which one it was) when he was speaking to I think his custodian... he said something about being able to see the pieces and paths of the game, but not being able to control everything. He insisted, again and again, that he was not a god.
Of course he manipulates primarchs and armies. He's in a game that he must play out to the end. That is alluded to many times throughout the books. He is in a deadly fight for his (and the Imperium's) existence. I do not think the manipulation of the pieces on the board is simply a conceit.

I don't agree with alot that has become canon since the earlier days,the treatment of the Eldar and some of the primarchs in my view wasn't as satisfying as it could of been..

That would make an incredible visionary book if the Emperor returned having to claw his disparate soul shards back together in some mythic heroes journey through the warp/multiple time periods and realities..returning Phoenix like from his millennia long stasis.

I personally have a theory that Lehman Russ is in the warp to gather the shards of the Emperors soul, alongside Valdor, who is searching for his true name. That makes more sense to me than Lehman is looking for a tree of life, in a reality that’s at the moment not very life friendly. In fact, the denizens of the warp never fail to find new and horrific way to kill. Not very realistic in my opinion. If Lehman can gather the shards of the emperors soul, and valdor gets his true name, THAT could “Reforge” the shards. We know that Khorne, while shattered, can actually be reforged to bring him back to life. Even though the emperor started out as man, his psychic presence and power is actually very comparable to the chaos gods. Many speculate none could beat him 1v1, but the emperor couldn’t 1v4 them, so it’s just a war of minds.
For all his intents, the man emperor really is a god now. The one mf who hated religion so much he deleted it being turned into a god is hilariously ironic. Since he now shares the same god status, at least in power and presence, if not origin, it stands to reason he could be re forged.

You just make these stories come alive, your enthusiasm and love for the universe is so incredibly apparent. You might not be the largest Warhammer 40k youtuber, but you're certainly the most genuine

We're probably (we better) get a little interaction with the Emperor and Sanguinius since he knows that his son is literally walking to his death no matter how hard he fights.

The Emperor did, however.
I think that Wolf Lord Rho over-interpreted the role of a Fool in a kings court. Because kings naver lover or cared for Fools at their courts. The Fools just served their purpuse like other members of King's court. The Emperor needed to put The Fool (Malcador) in a position that helped him win the fight against Horus. There is no emotions about that, just another figure on the board of Regicide.
I would absolutely love a grounded scene when Malky dies before the eyes of the Big E.
Instead of the official « behold the greatest sacrifice of our age, [malcador the hero etc.]
I would love a gut wrenching cry of loss from the Emperor as his only friend turns to dust before his eyes ; like « No ! My friend, my last friend, my only friend... »
i dont think that will happen tho on the plus side mal will be at big es side with the falling sons in the warp fighting on that front of the long war

The Emperor also pulled another slight of hand on Malcador. When he offered a "new piece" for him to play with, The "fool" was the piece representing Emperor himself. He used his power to glamour over it as Malcador would have been hesitant to risk any dangerous plays with it if he had known. This is why after Revelation leaves the fool piece is gone with a gold crowned piece in its place.
That game board.... Remember what malcador said. "why have you changed the game?" Maybe this is just a fanciful theory but just maybe.....is the game board a psychic device? A game board to predict the future with pieces and cards to mimic people and events the world. I mean, the Eldar regularly divine the future in abstract ways, and the universe is vast/populated with many races. Who's to say a device like that hasn't been created and taken by the Emperor?

I believe it is. This is a normal wargame for them, but they are using it to perceive the actions of their opponents.
Well we know that the emperor's tarot, a deck of crystal cards, are used by imperial psykers to divinate the future, and the pieces/cards on the board are mentioned several times to be made of crystal, to it's very likely.
I find this short story interesting because of its possible wider and long term implications. The Chaos gods play their games against each. I think the Big E needed some of his sons to fall. Ultimately to to have them in the warp. Either to have their own realms in or having them as demon princes. Close off the galaxy and they will turn each other. A multi faction civil war raging across the warp now with added Primarches. Who are in a way empire builders and warriors.
Rho this is probably my favorite read you gave , when you read about the fool it hits home to stay on work and better myself . Thank you rho , keep reading just like the rest of the 40k channel community cause its what i think of my friends when i wish to inspire them .
I agree with your assessment of this scene. One of the best, most touching, and most important scenes ever in 30-40K. Malcador has ever been my favorite character, and the Black Library made such an amazing choice in including this short story in one of their yearly free releases, so that everyone could enjoy it, no matter if it was something they could afford or not. Thanks for covering it- and I can’t wait to see more details of Malcador’s character and sacrifice as the end gets ever nearer. I really enjoy and appreciate your channel-

I cant think of anything witty to say about the one which is to bad because I've been doing pretty good for witty comments.
This is one of my favorite scenes from all the HH, it show that deep deep down the Emperor is still somewhere, somehow, nih immortal, still human and willing to give everything thing fof his people.
And Malcador, my god Malcador, is a true BAMF, just like the Emperor few to no cost to hight to secure The Imperium of Man destiny in the stars.
Yes, yes, yes, a Malcador model is needed so badly. I wouldn't be agenst Malcador and the Emperor both getting models it would be great. Make the Emperor model massive and the sinter peice to any display, and make the Malcador one small because in the end he was in body a normal man. It would be awsome to have them next to each other.

Continue what you're doing, I hope you'll get a video out later that might encourage me to check out more stories. The fool has several meanings. In the tarot the fool unlimited potential. Walking away from his mountainous path of their past without thought and looking towards the bright future while stepping over the edge into the unknown. It also represent loyalty and purity.
I tremble just thinking what will come next. We are almost near the siege of Terra. And we’ll see the end of Heresy. Death of Sanguinius... oh the Emperor, thats gonna be hard

Having said that, while i wish i saw the more human side of the emperor the way you do, i have to disagree here:
"In ancient days the fool could say anything to anyone, in theory at least, Revelation said. He smiled and warmth flooded through Malcador to see the expression, but then his smile and his moment of hope faded"
That last part, "but then his smile and his moment of hope faded"
Revelation's smile died and Malcador's moment of hope faded. The reason Revelation's smile died is because he's about to tell Malcador how he's failed:
"It was the fools task to remind kings and queens that they were mortal, and weak, and not above any other. In the parlance of a later time they existed to speak truth to power, to defy authority and most importantly puncture tyranny."
Looking at the way things have turned out, can we say Malcador has done this at all? Tyranny, Authoritarianism, Power over the weak, aren't these all things that are prevelant in the imperium and The Emperor? Is huberis partly to blame for the missteps that lead to this?
I enjoyed this...the narration, the music; the lore. Very elemental on a rainy Wednesday in London.

I think Sanguinius is so loyal because he is inherently good and kind. Feuding primarchs settle their differences when Sanguinius ways in because he knows what is right and what is wrong, I feel like he likes all of his brothers equally and maybe even to a falt in light of the horus heresy. He really is an Angel for what's its it's worth.
Great video Wolf Lord. Wanted to add, the Master of Mankind Emperor is the same one you love man. Big E tells others what they need to hear, not necessarily the truth. Only when talking with Malcador will he speak truth. I agree with you, some ppl took what he says in Master literally, but in my mind he has always loved his sons, and always knew some would fall. A being of his intellect cannot be judged based on a single passage. Great thoughts on your videos about the Emp.
I want you to know that your voice and speech cadence are now forever my headcanon for Malcador. When I read his lines in the books it is your voice I hear in my head. Excellent job.

Great video bro! I was excited for this one after the first part yesterday. I always thought the Emperor cared about all his sons and humanity. I think he does have a plan for victory, and I think it may involve the warp due to the Psychic Awakening coming soon.

ive only recently come accross your channel and ive been watching 40k theories, arch warhammer and luetin and i think you are actually the best 40k lore youtuber i like to watch, ive watched like 10+ of your vids in a couple hour.

Excellent take, I read this months ago and it overshadowed entire books in the Heresy Collection... And yes, that last paragraph you mentioned is definitely in top 3 of all the Heresy books...
I wish that Horus vs Big E at 17:53 would be an actual diorama with figures being at 1" -1' scale.
I have a vague recollection of seeing such a diorama in an early 1990's White Dwarf; it was either an entrant and/or winner of the Golden Sword painting prize!
As Wolf Lord Rho himself might say: "juuuuuust epic". The first time I read this I didn't even know wtf was going on. I was like "who is this revelation fellow?"... talk about slow, but I remember when it dawned on me (near the end :o ) that I had to go back to the start and re-read it, awesome. Totally agree that is the real Emperor : )

My opinion is that Emps only tells Guilliman he views the Primarchs as tools because he believes Gill will work better and more effective that way. They are definitely his sons in his mind.

I think most definately that there are shades of gray rather than a black and white story when it comes to old Emps and his relations, both love and knowing they have a role to play and that he needs them to fulfill that role no matter what.

Malcador is the Emperors link to humanity. The Emperor is not human, his life, mind, abilities separate him. The burden of guiding an entire race has forced him to not focus on the individual. Malcador is the one that reminds him of the individual lives that he effects.

You showed Malcador on his throne with the skulls engraved with two and eleven again. Well I've been pondering why those two numbers?
Based on the lore I've read and what you've drawn attention to in Malcador's lore, my theory is that Malcador took the role of uncle seriously. In doing so he inscribed their numbers as a way to remember them and to ensure his Inquisition didn't allow dark fates to befall anymore of the Emperor's sons.
It's been my impression that Malcador was excellent at long term planning, especially when it came to seeing the Emperor's vision of humanity unfold as it was intended. Additionally Malcador had good relationships with most of the Primarchs.
I think it's an uncle's way of grieving.
As I look at the way Big E is approaching making Malcador angry, I have to wonder if he is not actually engaging in some good old reverse psychology here ... as you said the 2 know each other the best and longest, so it would not surprise me that Big E knew that the only real way to get his BFF serious is to appear to arrogantly insult his ego that Big E knows is not there ....

Never realized but I got this in a free collaberation of stories from a games workshop. Mind you I spent about 200 on Tartaros terminators that day. I’m going to read this once I finish praetorian of dorn.
I view the the talk about "the Fool" around the 5 minute mark was an attempt to get Malcador's mindset into that of Horus. If you recall the visions Horus received on Davin, one of the main points that turned him to chaos was the idea that Emperor was merely using him as a tool to further his own apotheosis - and would discard Horus as soon as he was no longer useful. I think that this is supported by the comments in the vid "if you lose you're damned."

Interesting that Malcador's throne in the picture had two skulls with "II" and "XI" on them. Perhaps that's where the missing primarchs are, on the arms of the throne.
Aren't this normal seized skulls? I think, the skull of a primarch should be a bit bigger.

Given the Emperor's vast experience and his well-established Machiavellian methods, it would not surprise me at all if the Emperor knew that Malcador has no ambition or pride to be wounded with mere insults and taunts, and surmised that even if Malcador would not be swayed by the insults, his use of that crude tactic would likely serve to arouse Malcador. A win-win strategy for the Emperor.
