  • The Mazda CX-5 has been updated for 2022 with a new look outside, a few new features and some subtle changes to the interior. There is still no true hybrid version, but a range of petrol engines and a diesel continue for Australia. There are some alterations to the range, though, with new Touring Active and SP models. But do you still need the CX-5 Akera for this family SUV to feel really posh? Let’s find out!
The Mazda CX-5 competes with popular SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan.
In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, we conduct a full and independent first review of the 2022 Mazda CX-5 Akera Turbo Petrol ($53,380 before on-road costs).

After almost 3 months of owning our new Akera in Deep Crystal Blue, we love it. No touch screen isn't an issue when you use voice control to make calls etc. The power tail gate does have a lock button but if you activate the walkaway lock feature it's not required anyway, just walk away from the car after closing the tail gate and the whole car locks with 2 beeps to confirm. I do agree with the adaptive cruise comments though. Way too sensitive for my liking.

As an owner of a 2021 Akera with the 2.5 turbo (first Mazda I have ever owned) and I have to say I love it. The touchless screen works very well and is easy to use, and I find it better to use than a touchscreen when the car is moving. There is no chance of accidentally hitting the death button when you hit a bump like you can on a touchscreen, and it is less distracting. It is a beautifully put together car and I highly recommend it.

@@analysethis6061 We have clocked just over 25,000kms in our Akera 2.5T Soul Red in 10 months. This turbo model offers oodles of power when required and in conjunction with the AWD on demand gives us great confidence. My wife and I both love the beautifully appointed Akera interior, with the only small gripe for me (not my wife) is that the steering wheel is not as rounded as some other brands (for example Holden). We compromised and fitted a steering wheel cover and the problem for me was solved. We would definitely look at buying another Mazda. We previously had a couple of KIAs and liked them and consider them great value for money, but his Mazda is in a different league. We think it is a beatifully put together car, subtle and elegant styling appeals to us more than the more angular styling of some other brands. Maybe that's showing my age, each to their own I suppose.

@@MegaShangus thank you so much for the wonderful review. We have shortlisted the Mazda Akera model for our next car purchase. Mazda recently announced CX -60 hybrid. Will decide between the two and then purchase the car. We had initially put a deposit down for the new Skoda Karoq. Only to be told 6 months later we need to pay extra $8900. We were willing to negotiate butthe dealer refused and we withdrew the contract. Very disappointing experience with Skoda. Thought after owning Japanese cars, imight give Skoda a try. H a ppy to stick with our Japanese car manufacturers.

    • @MegaShangus

@@analysethis6061 No worries happy to help if I can. Another bit of info for you is that we get an average of 9.1lts/100km out of the Akera. Our previous FWD Sportage averaged 8.5lts/100km and was underpowered at that. Although I admire European engineering (I own 2 German tractors) I also appreciate Japanese engineering. Euro cars require 95 RON petrol as opposed to Japanese cars that happily run on 91 RON, adding up to a significant saving on fuel costs. Also Euro cars cost more to service and arguably depreciate faster.

@@MegaShangus thank you for letting me know the mileage. Most of the reviewers were quoting 10.5l to 11 litres per 100 km. I found it too steep. Your figures make much sense and are within acceptable margin. I really appreciate your comments. Do you think if 98 octane is used, the mileage would improve further? I am no l o nger looking at European cars after receiving poor customer service. They need to take a lesson in customer service from Japanese and Korean car dealerships, especially Lexus or Genesis. Japanese cars rarely give any trouble.

It's is good to see continued crash reports from the US showing the partnership with Sumimoto metals paying off.
Back in 2010, Mazda and Sumitomo Metals started a project inspired by samurai sword creation (which take years to produce). What followed was an automotive record for ultra high tensile steel; a record that stands today and has not been bettered by another car maker.
It's expensive, and they use it sparingly but Mazda uses it wisely in areas where high speed impacts will most likely cause severe injury or death (front, back, B pillars etc).
Last year the US IIHS introduced a very aggressive side impact test. Faster, higher, heavier. They released it on the small SUV's last year (which included the likes of the Forester, RAV4, Volvo XC40). The result though was telling. Vehicles that passed their previous test with flying colours were left failing.
In the end, the CX-5 was the only vehicle to pass.
Last month they ran the same test on midsize vehicles. VW's ID4 was one of only 2 vehicles to pass all tests - but it was also the newest vehicle. The only other one was, now 6 year old, Mazda CX-9.
    Impressive.

As the CX 5 diesel only accounts for about 3% of total CX 5 sales , it's going to be apparently dumped soon as well. Mazda apparently will need at least 10-15% of total CX60 sales for the diesel for it to be sold here. After having a Mazda 3 Astina for 5 years I would have no problem buying another Mazda. I need a suv due to back injury, my wife has my Astina and now and I have a Sportage , I should have bought the diesel but got a great deal on a run out model , but the Mazda cx60 looks a better option to the cx5 as it is starting to look dated and the tech in the new Sportage is impressive, so I’ll sit back and wait and see if it lands and what price. It’s like a parallel universe at the moment, very few new cars available, I was thinking of buying a caravan as we are retired , 18 month wait for a land cruiser lol 😂 it’s just crazy. It's very strange to hear in 2022 a torque converter auto doesn't last.

Its a standard auto. They been using it for years now. No issues. I will not trust DSG or some CVT's but this gearbox is rock solid. You are a funny man!

Unfortunately Mazda CX-5 seat base’s are rubbish front and back.
Need to take a lesson from VW.

The CX-5 would be perfect if they had an optional panoramic sunroof. Total deal breaker..

I have an akera 2022 turbo and I wish they had a no sunroof option. They’re ok but big problems if they leak or stuff up.
