Most of the companies test using the longer barrels. Even the specs for full house cartridges are longer. For me the best home defense weapon is a cannon at each door. Load up some grape shot and let it rip if someone tries to enter unwelcome
I made a list of 5 guns I want to buy in 2023, but I'm gonna add a semi auto shotgun as number 6. Probably a benelli m4. That'll be my door buster. BUT, I might have found an awesome 300 blackout round, but I forgot the chronograph this past Saturday 🤦🏻♂️
@@andrewmconrad and thats why you add denim in another test, denim and drywall in another and as a worst case scenario, drywall, 2x4 and denim into gel.
That's right. Most use a 20 inch barrel with a 1/8 twist and it's important. I see folks testing with 16 inch and 10.5 inch barrels with 1/7 and it just isn't going to give you what this round can do. I have killed a lot of shit with it. Never had a problem. Not one.
I don't see why this wouldn't work for whitetails at reasonable ranges. Especially with a 22 inch barrel. My son has a Bushmaster with 22 inch barrel and it's 223 only.
Good video. I’ve been very confused what would make a good 223/556 home defense round to not have over penetration. I know they’re frangible bullets but not sure if they make this in hollowpoint or if there’s other factors to consider? I kind of gave up searching and went 300blk with a suppressor instead for indoor hearing protection of me and my family.
I am right there with you. I think 300 blackout suppressed is a top 3 home defense round. I found 190gr hornady 300bo rounds that I meant to test this past weekend but I forgot the chronograph at home 🤦🏻♂️ that test will get done within the next few weeks
Audio sounded fine to me but I have tinnitus. lol I recently got some Freedom Munitions 77g and 69g OTM to test out for accuracy and velocity through my suppressed Mark 18 10.5" bbl. Since it has a 1:7 twist it shot them both very well, super tight groups. My main thing with defense rounds besides terminal performance is accuracy.
The test barrel is 24" per Hornady website. That being said, IDK how fast you thought they would go in a 13.7 barrel. You drop a lot between a 16 and a 13.7
Using 13.7 inch barrel would be the reason I personally would buy this type of ammunition. I already know I’m getting diminished muzzle velocity out of a shorter barrel so I want something with a soft tip that’s going to fragment or mushroom. There are companies that make ammunition specifically for SBR’s, but soft points or poly tipped bullets will do the job just fine.
Hi Ray. Out in Immokalee. You can either take Immokalee to Oil well and go out past 29, or you can take 29 south to oil well and then head east. SWFL range and gun club
I run a 20" AR for my home/ranch defense. Crazy how that round fragmented, it's supposed to expand and hold together like a soft point. Federal fusion or speer gold dot 223 in any grain weight expand in game animals. I would like to see some Winchester deer season XP tested in gel; 62gr bonded polymer tip sounds like a winner for home defense.
Check out meade industries 77gr otm. The cleanest ammo I’ve shot and they claim to be far more accurate than any other company. Also almost half the cost per round as other 77gr offerings
I didn't know Hornady made Critical Defense in .223 / 5.56. It seems oddly useless on such a small bullet, to me! But if the bullet fragments, it may be the choice!
It definitely fragments and it'll stop whatever is coming at you especially with follow up shots. I'll be testing a 300 blackout round soon that's not supposed to fragment, and I think it's ultimately going to be a winner!

@@andrewmconrad a better test is the gel. The chronograph is nice but checking penetration and expansion is way more important.
@trashedmechanic1987 oh I know, but just a gel test is too short of a video 🤣🤣

I couldn't see anything in the gel. The lines on the outside of the gel made it impossible to tell what was going on.
It's hard to get as a civilian but I'm curious to see how the ballistics of Hornady urban TAP vs the C.D round.

I think .300 Blackout is still to much power, and will over penetrate. A supressed 9mm pcc, may be a better option!?
@@andrewmconradwhat about testing the Fort Scott subsonic 300 blkout? Keep up the good work
@@chrissewell1608possible yes that's why I run 5.56 yes louder but also less penetration than 9mm
Wow! A home intruder would be carried away with two a-holes after getting hit with that shot.
Rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6

Agreed. You have to be accurate in a self defense situation. Full accountability of all shots fired

25-50fps max per inch is the average.
great ammo for sure

Otm is not a personal defense round

Can’t understand why people film home defense tests at 25 yards
Hornady is obviously a company that will cut corners at their customer's expense so istopped buying from hornady 💯🥳
