Hi Misty 👋 We had no idea that was a modern city ! We don’t get to see Korea like you showed us. I looked up the Korea dollar to our Aussie dollar and the Won is stronger. 1 AUD = 907 WON , I was expecting the aussie dollar to be stronger , I was wrong. Great foodie vid as always 🤙 Cheers Rod and Gem
Hi Rod! Oh yeah Seoul has always been a huge and modern city since the late 90s I want to say? Prior to that most buildings were 3-5 story walk ups, but now there's a lot of skyscrapers. A lot of American influence in terms of food, design, since there are a lot of American soldiers, etc since the war. Similar to Tokyo in terms of a city. Glad you and Gemma are back home safe!
BIFF is the Busan International Film Festival, which was going on. Those stalls were just for the festival. If I went, I'd have: • gimbap • fried chicken • Jjigae & Corvina fish • seafood jeon • hotteok • mochi soup • bbq • dumplings I vaguely remember jeju tangerine juice as a kid.
@CoggieCarol ah interesting to know the festival was going on at the time, but the food stalls are there every day, all year round starting in the late afternoon. 👍
@CoggieCarol oh I love Corvina fish. grilled or in Jjigae. Tteok soup too! But so much food, so little time. We were only there for 4 days and packed it all in. ☺️
Awesome Misty !!! Enjoy your visit ! Mahalo for sharing delicious foods in Seoul & Busan ! OMG ! Not Ok with your driver ! Enjoy your beer relax and have fun !!!
Hello Misty, so much fun traveling with your Mom, wow authentic Korea foods , thank you for sharing your video weather looks good for you both, Have a fun trip. Peace.
That was awesome Misty! I hope your Umma had a great time. Those street foods are right up there in my comfort zone along with the KFC and mandoo kuksoo. Sorry for the bad experience with the barbecue restaurant and cab driver. Even the street vendors seemed a lot nicer.
Yes, the attitudes of unfriendliness were what we saw the other 2 times we went. My mother is from Seoul, but left in 1973 when it was a smaller town with no skyscrapers and they were still a poor country. The biggest buildings were about 5 stories tall but most were 3 story walk ups. It has gotten better with an exception of a few. I think the younger generation are more helpful. Also, a lot of the street vendors, our taxi driver back to the airport (who drove much better) and some cashiers at the stores were Chinese immigrants. They are much more friendlier. The food was great though! Umma had a great time, but it was too much walking for her. LOL.
😂😂😂 Dead panned, "That's what she said." I love that you had a chance to take your mom to Korea. You won't regret taking the time to do this. She'll always remember this trip too.
Hey Misty missed you last night. That meat at the first place looked winnahs! Kimchi jiggae with tofu! Tteokboki looked Ono too. I’m getting hungry when I saw that sea food bowl! So much food! Great Video i loved it! Hope to see you on zoom!
Thanks Brian! I'm glad you liked the video and it made you hungry. I'll try to come on tonight. Soccer practice ran late yesterday and looks like it's late again tonight. 🤙
Wow! That was a non-stop food adventure for sure. You must have been exhausted from eating all that delicious food. I've never had that jajangmyeon dish, although everyone else seems to love it. Glad to hear I may not be missing much. It looked like so much fun!
It wasn't too bad as this was a week's worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks. It was exhausting getting through the lost of places. Especially finding breakfast. It's like Japan where things open late. Almost 9am and we are early birds and want to eat breakfast. So the 24 hour restaurant options help. You may like jajangmyeong. Maybe I'm just weird and don't like it. 🤣
Great 👍 travel and descriptions of dishes. Local flavor comparisons able to relate tastes from abroad. And your mom along with you on this pilgrimage is so precious to me.....thank you 💖 and safe journeys....God bless 🙌.......
K don't know what happened to my comment but here I go again. You did amazing with your editing! Looks like you had a great time and I'm happy you got to spend time with mom ❤ Your comments cracked me up and thank goodness you guys made it back home safely (crazy taxi driver)! Thanks for taking us along on this epic Food Fiend adventure! 🫰❤️🫶
LOL thank you Linda! So sorry your comment got deleted. I have no control over that and sometimes TH-cam is weird and deletes them on its own. Sometimes I can see the comment but when I click on it, it disappears. Yours though, I didn't get a notification at all. Thanks for the kind words, and I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi sista. Love Korean food, especially Korean fried chicken. Would love to go there sometime. Love their kimchi as well. Looks like you really enjoyed your time there. Your mom is so cute. Take care sis & God bless.
I love that your travel the world and bring us with you! Although the second place you went to, it looks like you got top ramen noodles in your dish with hot dogs and spam. I'm glad you were still able to salvage it for a meal. Thanks for all the reviews 🙂
Thanks Stogie Sister! The noodles are not Top Ramen. It is usually Korea's top ramen brand called Shin ramen and the dish is called Army Stew (Budae Jjigae). Eaten a lot by South Koreans and invented due to all the canned goods brought over by the US military. It's actually really good!
Great vlog Misty! You always keep it real! You got that Asian discrimination. Being Japanese, my daughter and I get that occasionally when we have Chinese food. I’d starve if I went to Korea lol! Don’t eat seafood except that lobster looked delicious. Thank you for taking us along with your Mom! Sue
Mahalo Sue! Yeah they discriminate really bad if you look Korean but don't speak it. It is slowly going away as they realize being American is not only being a Caucasian person. We got it really bad in 2008. Because of this it is on the bottom of my list of all the places I've traveled. Although we did meet wonderful friendly folks that were local, some still have the old school attitudes. Hoping in 10 years it will slowly fade away for them. There's lots of other delicious things to eat in Korea so you won't starve. Vegetarian, just meats and lots of breads. 😊
Loved this post. Always wanted to visit Korea one day just to try their food. Want to visit a place that served street toast. Do you know anywhere here in Hawaii that serves it?
Food looked bomb! Although this isn’t Japan, watching this made me excited for our upcoming trip to Japan again in January 😂 happy travels Misty! I can’t wait to travel soon as well
Aloha MIsty and mom: Thank you for taking us along during your visit to Korea. It was nice seeing the sights and seeing the authentic Korea food. Your ramen looked a lot more “yummy” to my Nong Shin ramen 🤣- I can imagine the deliciousness. The sights were awesome to see, and I hope you both enjoyed the visit. Now, I want to “hele-on” to my local Mega-Mart store, Korean-themed store/market, to pickup some pastries. This was a great vlog, and I look forward to the next vlog. Best wishes to you and mom! Much 🧧and 🤙, fellow 🐯!
Aloha Bill! You're very welcome! The ramen was great. But they usually use Shin ramen even at the food stalls. You van get free Shin Ramen on Korean Airlines if you're still hungry between meals. You just have to ask. Hope you find some great finds at your Korean mega mart. Have a wonderful weekend. 🤙😊
I loved the crunchiness of the tornado potato stick and the yummy looking icecream. (Wouldn't Aiden have loved to eat it?). Koreans do fried chicken really well. I love it the most along with all the banchans. I tried the black bean noodles once, and it was my last--not my thing either. Love hottoek. What a gastronomical feast from street foods alone. Nice to see your Mom.
Thanks Do! Yes my favorites was the hottest, fried chicken, seafood stew and the grilled meats. So much food so little time. I think we ate pretty well and had time for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
The next time we go to Korea, we want to spend more time in Myeongdong trying street food and we also want to visit Jeju Island. One thing that I thought was neat was that all the coffee shops serve drinks in glasses and cups and the food is on plates. The best kalbi tang I've ever had (which isn't many) is at Millions on Sheridan.
We were supposed to go to Jeju Island but a lot of walking to see the sites so my mom said no since she has really bad asthma. One day I'll try to go there. I'd love to see the old ladies dive for abalone.
Misty! Looks like mom and you had some awesome Korean food! I hope to go to Korea next year, did you folks go on your own? I don’t care to be tied to tours and would like to go on our own… oh, btw, I hate rudeness, you’re pretty cool, I would have lost it!!! Have a good weekend!!!
@davyf7620 HI Dave! Yes we did everything on our own. I always research and hate tours. This was my mom's early bday present. First class flight and all. Yeah I really didn't like the waitress and the owner. Super rude. Basically told us if we didn't finish that nasty fish she wouldn't set up the grill for the abalone etc. after complaining she changed but too late. Then I told the owner and she told me to tell the waitress my thoughts myself. So basically she's not going to fix her worker's attitude towards tourists. She was different to the locals 🤷🏻♀️ but we experienced that the last 2 times we went.
I kinda had the impression that all they want is the money… that’s BS and to me, even if the food isn’t as good, as long as the service is good and the folks are nice is the most important, right! Wow! First class flight! I’d be too spoiled if I flew first class all the time! 😄 I’m headed to Japan after Xmas, at least I’ll have Starlink WiFi on Hawaiian during the long flight! 🤣
@davyf7620 ooooh even Korean Airlines never had wifi for this trip. It sucked. So enjoy your Starlink! Enjoy Japan! One day we'd like to go to Sapporo/Hokkaido. 😊
Man, I have yet to try those Portuguese tarts and here you are in Korea eating them🤦♀️😄 The food looked good but even I, as a viewer, lost my appetite for that 1 restaurant. Hope you were able to enjoy your trip. Looks beautiful. Oh, and I Ikeda your spin off, clever😉🤙
Thanks Carol! I hope you and the ohana are doing well. ❤️ They actually make it legit! How weird ya that it's all over Korea now. That waitress and owner at the one restaurant is literally what a stank tuna is. 🤣 I'm glad you liked the spin off. 🤙
@FoodFiend I still haven't found it at Costco. I could feel it through your camera. So unpleasant. The street food was my favorite part, cause it looked fun, eating your ay through Korea 😉😄
Korea has a night market nice to know.I might not know korean, but you said I can point with my fingers😅😅😅 nice to know. That's BTS country. Would like to see it .Thanks for your time.
Right, i'd be a whale with jackson chameleon eyes with sooo much food all around me! The colors and textures are phenomenal, i can't imagine the sensory explosion with the tastes and smells. I'm sure your mom enjoyed getting to eat all she wanted too, roasted chestnuts are yummy. Lame for the bait and scam place, one of the sucky parts about touristy places 👎. Some items i had only seen or heard of but you give really great descriptions so i learned some things. That real charcoal kalbi though! I'd hit the ground running with that especially if that aroma is wafting everywhere. Great foodie vlog 🤤🤤 🤩🤩!!
@ripleylv426. Mahalo Ripley! I felt like a whale, but there's lots of walking just like Japan so I didn't gain any weight. 🤣 I think my mom enjoyed the food. The kim chi surprisingly she did not eat much of since it was super fermented. The whole subway smelled of farts, but its the smell of fermented cabbage. 🤮 That is what I will definitely miss - the charcoaled kalbi and steak! 🤤
@bertchina4071 i stopped a while ago because too many negative people kept saying everything was too expensive. So I no longer list prices. Anyway, it's a bit pointless nowdays with inflation because the price can change within weeks.
When I was in Korea 6 years ago with a tour group , the first night , we ate at a restaurant that serve ginseng chicken.... 2 other people and me had the "Runs" and stomach pains for two days ,,, spoil our vacation trip ....
@stephenAl143 sorry to hear that. But that why I don't like tours. Unless it's something far away like when I went to Hanoi and had to get to Halong Bay. But if I'm staying in a city I just do my own research and see if the restaurant has good reviews. But it can happen anywhere. I got terrible food poisoning in San Diego.
Japanese Miso is basically different than Korean Dweon Jang, miso is not fermented whereas dweonjang is fermented. So, their tastes are different. To Koreans, it can be offending to refer Dweonjang as Miso. It’s like comparing Chinese noodles and Italian pasta.
@jinh.8221 ok as a half Korean American I didn't know that. We including my mother who is from Seoul just call it Korean miso so other Americans understand. But I know it's different from Japanese miso.
Yeah it was gross. She pretty much told is she wouldn't cook the raw seafood on the grill until we ate it all. When we said we didn't like it she said we better pay for it. I was like relax lady no one said we were sending it back or wanted a refund. She also ignored us in the beginning and only catered to the locals. It's ok. The rest of the restaurants and food stalls were nice.
If you watch a Travel Tip video I did years ago I explained how I do it. You want to do something you want? Work hard play hard. I have a job but also do side jobs for yard work which is back breaking, recycle cans...I will spend money on trips and food because that's what I like. Just like anyone else that has a hobby that will spend on whatever it is. I am cheap with other things. I never eat out for lunch at work. I make one pot meals for dinner and eat the leftovers for 2 or 3 days. I only buy food at a restaurant or plate lunch once a week for the videos, I drive an older car that is paid off and don't have any desire to buy a new car unless it dies, I live in a modest apartment, keep my electric bill to $120 a month max and don't buy unnecessary "things." So yeah, I'm not rich. You set your goals and do it. I also pick cheaper places where the US dollar goes a long way. And if it is the US I used my Disney points to pay for everything at Disneyland or book cruises where I can pay 2 years in advance with no interest a month at my own leisure. So if you want to do something you can do it with sacrifice. Not because you're rich...
It's a cultural shock. Not one of my favorite places to be socially, but it has gotten better over the years. They're a bit more friendlier to foreigners compared to even 2010.
@@FoodFiend That is interesting. I have had many korean GF's in the past and several korean friends and coworkers I had been close friends with. I had a close Korean friend in High school I was supposed to go to Korea with, but never went. In a way I grew up with them. The only thing that puts me off is the trouble north of their border.
"Nice and strong the way I like it. Black like a psychopath." 😆 That sucks about that one restaurant, but everything else looked good especially the street food.
Tbh I think I would only eat the foods that you actually liked there. Nice to see your mom in the video. So sad about the bad service and crazy drivers but enjoyed the video and your honesty and looking forward to the next!

Another great video Misty! Korean seems to be very reasonable in price!
Yes the food prices are really inexpensive! Not as inexpensive as Japan or Thailand but still less than home.
Really enjoyed this, thank you for putting it together!
You're welcome Keith and thanks for watching the video. 😊🤙

Hello! 😊👋
Wow, so sorry for your experience at that first restaurant 😟
Just seeing the sashimi they brought out. It didn’t look appealing at all 🫤
Yeah it was gross.
How can you afford trips to South Korea and other places? How rich are you?
Way to tell it like it is. Oftentimes you're way to nice.
Thanks, but I'm really not that nice of a person and can be very mean if the other party asks for it. I'm very blunt.
I have one thing to say right now! I am Jealous! Some day I will get to Korea.
@@miketuggle9273 the DMZ is a great experience. We didn't do any of that as this is my 3rd time there.
"Nice and strong the way I like it. Black like a psychopath." 😆 That sucks about that one restaurant, but everything else looked good especially the street food.
@@tealorturquoise 🤣 yes the street food is amazing and pretty affordable!
Tbh I think I would only eat the foods that you actually liked there. Nice to see your mom in the video. So sad about the bad service and crazy drivers but enjoyed the video and your honesty and looking forward to the next!
Yes a lot was good and some was a little bit too much for my tastebuds. 🤣
@FoodFiend Mahalo for the postcard Misty!
@kevinwatson4116 oh I'm so glad you got yours. Thanks for letting me know.
