This is great! Thank you so much. Finally a clear and detailed tutorial that moves fast and doesn't use tech talk. Unfortunately, although the track sounded great running through Console, it didn't print on the Logic recording and I do not see why not.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad to help 😊 if the track didn’t print it’s because you probably have the console app on UAD MON mode which means you can hear the plugins but they won’t print. You need to select UAD REC mode on the Console App on the far right side.
This video is great, I’ll definitely check out your other ones! Question: Are there any advantages to printing a small amount compression and/or EQ on the front end? Why is this function available? Does it have something to do with serial compression?
@@thesongiseverything the advantage of printing effects is that it reduces post production. However, the con is that you won’t be able to remove them and if you over compress or add too much EQ there is nothing you’ll be able to do after.
So I set that vocal chain up, record it into logic, do I then start eq’ing and adding compression again in logic or do I just carve out the unwanted frequencies in logic once I’ve printed that vocal chain? I watched your other video explaining equalisation but I’m trying to figure out the process for doing it all start to finish
Great question! If you record with Apollo Console App using the REC mode (meaning the plugins were recorded), then I would just use a Deesser and EQ to take out the harsh frequencies and then add delay and reverb at the end of the chain. However, I choose to record using the UAD MON Mode in the console app which means the plugins don’t get printed. This way I can make changes after the fact in Logic Pro. In which case, my chain would look something like this: 610B Preamp DeEsser Subtractive EQ 1176 Compressor LA2A Compressor Pultec EQ Delay (if applicable) Reverb But of course, nothing is set in stone and there is no “right” way to do it. Find the workflow that sounds good to you. This is just what has worked for me. Hope that helps you! 😊
Can you make a video series, about using the u.a.d twin.. ⭕How to make a mix after using d.s.p plugging, how to do a mastering,, about those things.. (In the U.A.D console.)I watched a lot of videos. There was no explanation in any of them.

Thank You for your great video. I need easy and you seem very helpful. Sadly, I'm old school & 'finally trying to jump into the box. I bought an USB Apollo Twin but never used a plug in. For now, I just need a basic hook up with my Rane Pre/EQ, compressor & mixer. I'd really appreciate your advice on a the hook up (listed below), so I can use my Apollo & external gear together for now? For Example: Until I get into the console & plugins ... 1. Can't I just go from my external Rane pre to my ext compressor and then into Apollo's front Hi Z Input and still get a good signal and, just plug my L & R mixer outputs right into the 2 TRS inputs in the rear of the Apollo? And, until I get my rack mount dell computer set up (with quicker USB inputs made just for the Apollo USB Twin) ... 2. Can't I at least get an audio signal from the Apollo's L & R Outputs and plug them right into my current desktop computer? BTW, Do you know if the Apollo TRS inputs & front High Z inputs 'bypass the Apollo's mic pre? Some say yes, others say now. Thank You for your time & what you think? And also for your great video. I'm sure it's going to help me finally get this thing turned on! ha!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful 😊 Once you download the Console App from Universal Audio's official website and get familiar with it, I think you'll be recording completely in the box more often. But to answer your questions: 1. Here is a youtube video from another creator who shows how to connect external gear such as an external preamp and a compressor to the Apollo: th-cam.com/video/N9RvoGIQUPQ/w-d-xo.html Also, here is direct link to Universal Audio's official website explaining in more detail how to use Inserts on the Apollo: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/206780533-Using-Hardware-Inserts-with-Apollo-Twin 2. I don't think you can bypass the Apollo built in preamps using the High Z input on the front or the TRS cables on the back. You can however bypass the Universal Audio plugins by selecting the UAD MON mode. Just keep in mind, if you add a UAD plugin on the preamp section (Such as the 610B preamp) then it will still get printed. Hope it helps! 😊
@@homestudioacademycan I ask a question if you don't mind. I plan to route an external audio device into the Apollo via adat, would I be able to apply the built in fx to the incoming adat channels I wonder? Thanking you

Thank you so much! If you’re using the 610B preamp then the Apollo will act like the real unit and will only allow you to change the meters like the actual hardware.
Good overview, thanks! So with the Apollo you don’t insert the UA plugins via Logic channel strip - rather you insert the UA plugins via Console, then just hit record in Logic? That seems like an extra layer.
Thank you! The benefit of recording with the console app is the ability to run the plugins in real time with zero latency without straining your computer. You can add the plugins in Logic if you want but you won’t get zero latency.

How would you dial in settings for a female vocalist that will sing very soft and pretty, but then belt like Christina Aguilera? Follow up question: Would you gain stage based on the belting, and risk the soft vocal being too quiet? Or would you do the soft/belting vocals in separate takes and gain stage individually? (Also, what if the same sentence requires both techniques?) Much appreciated!
@@jordankahn9298 the principles would be the same for dialing any vocal but of course use your best judgement for the singer and track your working on. When gain staging I prefer to set the gain based on each section of a song (example: set the gain for the verses, then the chorus then the bridge) and make sure the level meters are peaking at -12db. Great Video! Slowly getting more used to UAD plug ins! Do you always use the same pre-amp settings when recording vocals? You don’t mess with all the other knobs on there? Thanks!
Thank you so much! When it comes to the 610B preamp, I don’t mess with any of the EQ at all. I just use the tubes cranked up all the way to get some tube saturation because I don’t own a tube microphone.
You’re very welcome, glad to help! You set the gain with your preamp. But once your entire chain is complete, make sure it’s still between -20db to -10db so you have enough headroom and prevent it from clipping.
Hey, i really like this and is very insightful.. i would love an explanation for the 1073 plugin, im struggling figuring it out. Also, isn't the point of adding effects into the console so that it also records onto the daw? Thus, using UAD Rec.. Or is it okay to add my preamp, eq, compression after i record? Ive been confused whether i need to add the preamp etc, before or after
Hey Zain Malik, so there is no 1073 in this chain. I used a 610B preamp, 1176 Compressor and LA2A. The Console App gives you both options (UAD Record and UAD Monitoring). If you want to commit to the sound then choose UAD Rec, if you don’t want to commit and make changes later in your DAW, then choose UAD Monitoring. At the end of the day, it’s up to your preference.
@@homestudioacademy ohh I see! & I meant if you could make a separate tutorial on the 1073 one day. I've been wanting to use it but it seems so complicated
Great video. You are suggesting a preamp plugin in the channel strip while recording. However I understand that the interface has built in preamps. So won’t that be sufficient to act as preamps? I usually use preamp plugins after recording vocal. Is that not good enough?
@@MusicChannel-rf5zz when placing another preamp on the unison slot inside the console app, the Apollo will change from its own built in preamp to emulate whatever preamp you select, in this case I used the 610B preamp.
Great vid bro, still I have one question Can U Write some plugs in and just hear some at the same time? Because I Write in the compressors and preamp But want to use reverb without writing in

If I want to use the UAD plugins to process the recording afterwards, should I insert the same plugins again in my DAW’s track? If I insert UAD plugins in Logic Pro, will the processing take place in the Apollo? I haven’t found any videos that explain this process.
Really helpful thanks, Question:when I record like this with UAD MON selected although the compressors are not being recorded, is the UA 610 pre amp effect being recorded?
You’re very welcome! Thanks for leaving a comment. When UAD MOD is selected, it bypasses all of the effects including the preamp. So it will just record the build in preamp of the Apollo.
the build? so the effect of boosting the voice through the unison preamp does come through in the recording? but not the other plug ins?@@homestudioacademy
@@lindsayh1163 no the Unison 610B Preamp won’t be printed if you use UAD MON mode. It will be like using the Apollo on its own without any of the effects.

I see your are using rode nt 1, but when I am trying to use it with Apollo solo it doesn’t have any signal, when I press some buttons it starts to give me very low signal. When I use it with scarlet it works. That means it’s not for or mic issue. Sm7b works well with Apollo What’s the problem it could be ?
You need to make sure you click on the 48v switch (also known as phantom power) on the Apollo because the NT1 is a condenser mic and it requires it to turn on. The SM7B is a dynamic mic which does not require phantom power.
In FL studio, once u put your mic in input and you’re ready to record, you will be ready to hear any UA plugin with monitoring? There’s no complicated type of step?
Im recording dry vocals from my twin x in (UAD monitor mode) and then adding all my UA plugins after in the daw. Compressors, eqs, etc. Im not that impressed with the sound. Do you recommend recording with some compressors or eq already on it and printing it in the daw?
I like monitoring with the plugins but not printing them. I go back in my daw and add the effects because then I can make changes if I need to. If you record them on the way in, there is no way to undo it.
I have a question thats hard to explain, but im hoping you can help. Im deciding on a Twin X USB so heres my question: Essentially im curious if theres a way to record a take, (monitor via console with FX) clean into my daw, and then if i decide i want to use that take but WITH the UAD plugins i was monitoring, if I can somehow run it back into console, to then print that take with the UAD chain enabled into my daw, without having to re- record a whole new take. That way I can monitor my vocal while recording (with FX), and then after its in my daw CLEAN with no FX, I can then decide if id want to use the UAD chain, without having to committ to that sound/take before knowing, also preventing me from having to record a whole separate take. Not sure if that makes sense, but if so id appreciate your thoughts. Thanks man!
Yes, so just record using the UAD monitoring mode in the console app. This way you’ll be able to hear the plugins but they won’t be printed. Then, just go into your DAW and just add the plugins back with the same exact settings from the console app.

Hey Albert Sison! To be honest I don’t know what is the difference between the MKII or the X. I know that the X is the newest version of it. But in regards to buying it second hand, I would be careful because you need to make sure that person who owned it will be able to transfer the plugins to your UAD account. Is the duo compared to quad really worth the 400-500 jump? I’m gonna be live-streaming using a Shure Sm7b so I’ll need a few plugins to make myself sound good but aside from that I’ll maybe only use a couple other plugins to actually mix/master songs within daw when working on music and not recording for TH-cam.
I don’t how many plugins the duo can handle compared to the quad but I’m assuming for a simple chain (like a preamp, Compressor and maybe Pultec eq should be enough). With that being said, I would search for comparisons here on TH-cam
If you use the 610B as unison (on the preamp section) it will print even if in MON mode. If you use it in the effects section (where you add eq, compressor etc) then it won’t print in MON mode.

Thank you so much! I actually upgraded from a Focusrite Scarlett to the Apollo Twin X and for me*, there is no going back. At the end of the day it comes down to your personal needs. If you like the results you’re getting and would rather sign up for the Universal Audio Spark subscription service to get access to some of their plugins and pay a monthly fee, then no. You’re very welcome! I’m glad to help 😊 if the track didn’t print it’s because you probably have the console app on UAD MON mode which means you can hear the plugins but they won’t print. You need to select UAD REC mode on the Console App on the far right side.

In which case, my chain would look something like this:
610B Preamp
DeEsser
Subtractive EQ
1176 Compressor
LA2A Compressor
Pultec EQ
Delay (if applicable)
Reverb
But of course, nothing is set in stone and there is no “right” way to do it.
Find the workflow that sounds good to you. This is just what has worked for me.
Hope that helps you! 😊

1. Can't I just go from my external Rane pre to my ext compressor and then into Apollo's front Hi Z Input and still get a good signal and,
just plug my L & R mixer outputs right into the 2 TRS inputs in the rear of the Apollo?
But to answer your questions:
1. Here is a youtube video from another creator who shows how to connect external gear such as an external preamp and a compressor to the Apollo: th-cam.com/video/N9RvoGIQUPQ/w-d-xo.html
Also, here is direct link to Universal Audio's official website explaining in more detail how to use Inserts on the Apollo: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/206780533-Using-Hardware-Inserts-with-Apollo-Twin

Good overview, thanks! So with the Apollo you don’t insert the UA plugins via Logic channel strip - rather you insert the UA plugins via Console, then just hit record in Logic? That seems like an extra layer.

(Also, what if the same sentence requires both techniques?)
Much appreciated!
@@jordankahn9298 the principles would be the same for dialing any vocal but of course use your best judgement for the singer and track your working on.

Hi ! I'm on fl studio and as you say when I start an old project, I constantly hear a loop, but I can't stop it how to do?
Make sure your audio track is MUTED in FL Studio and that you are only monitoring through the UAD Console App.
If the UAD console is is under UAD REC mode then yes you’ll hear and get printed. If it’s UAD MON mode, then you’ll hear the plugin but now print.

Im deciding on a Twin X USB so heres my question:
Essentially im curious if theres a way to record a take, (monitor via console with FX) clean into my daw, and then if i decide i want to use that take but WITH the UAD plugins i was monitoring, if I can somehow run it back into console, to then print that take with the UAD chain enabled into my daw, without having to re- record a whole new take.
Okay this makes sense. But will i still be using the same UAD plugins? I thought the UAD versions could only be used in console with the Apollo. Thanks for the quick reply bro! Subbed!@@homestudioacademy

Question is the Apollo compatible with bandlab or no?
I’m not familiar with bandlab but based on their official website, I don’t think so. Here is the compatibility chart from Universal Audios official website: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050583152-DAW-Compatibility
Do you need an external preamp with the Apollo? Thanks
No, it has a built in preamp just like any other audio interface. However, the Apollo comes with awesome sounding UAD plugins that emulate classic preamps such as: 610B, Neve, SSL, Manley, etc..
@@homestudioacademythank you replying, I understand about the emulations but is there enough gain to support most vocal microphones? Do those emulations also provide a gain boost/low noise floor ratio?
@@estefanwall2094 I believe you are probably referring to the SM7B, correct? In which case, yes the Apollo does have enough gain to power it. Plugins don’t have any effect on powering mics.
Hope it helps! 😊
You don’t track using 1073 & CL1B?
Those are paid plugins, I just use what came included with the Apollo. The Neve 1073 is definitely on my to buy list though!
@@homestudioacademy huh? Are those no longer free? I didn’t have to pay for those when I got mine
@@SmashavelliTV the 1073 is not free last time I checked. It did not come included with my Apollo when I bought it 5 years ago. Maybe you got one of those deals that they include extra plugins. LUCKY!
Why would you mute the track on logic you wont be able to hear the plugins recording
If you forget to mute in Logic Pro, the computer will pick up on the signal from the console app and in Logic Pro creating a doubling effect.
@@homestudioacademy so basically you cant here yourself on logic until after the recording
What if you wanna hear your plugins while recording only can through the console
@@SUPERRIO80017 you can, but then I would mute the track in the Console App. In my opinion, it’s better to hear yourself through the console app because you’ll be able to hear the plugins in real time with zero latency without relying on your computer’s processing power.
@@SUPERRIO80017 with zero latency yes. Logic Pro will require you to bring down the buffer size in the audio settings and won’t be able to run many plugins when tracking.
does the preamp get recorded into the daw? anyone???
If you use the Console App and select the “REC Mode” then whatever preamp you have in your vocal chain (such as the 610B) will be printed to your DAW. If you use the MON Mode in the console app, then no plugins will print to your DAW and the Apollo’s built in preamp is what will be printed.
Could you make a video starting at GROUND ZERO? LIKE PULLING YOUR MUSIC TRACK INTO PRO TOOLS HOW MANY TRACKS YOU NEED HOW TO RECORD THE VOCALS. THIS VIDEO IS STARTING AFTER ALL THAT, LOL.
@@Marktheprophet07 to create an audio track just open up your DAW, click on “new”, “audio track”, make sure your input channel matches your input for your mic and that’s it.
@homestudioacademy yes, I understand that but I am using the appollo and I want to transfer the plug ins I'm using over into recording with protools. So I can hear the plug ins with the recording. If you can direct me to a video explaining that I would highly appreciate it.
@@Marktheprophet07 then just add Universal Audio plugins in your audio track in pro tools after you record.
To record with them in real time, you’ll need the Universal Audio Console App.
@homestudioacademy that's the problem. I record with the plug ins bit they don't crossover on playback.
@homestudioacademy this may be asking to much but can you create a video doing that. You make it sound easy, lol!
hi, what is the purpose in using the UA plugins in console if recording in uad monitor mode if in the end you will be mixing with the Logic Pro tool plugins? my point is that you are not taking any advantage of the UA plugins
The point of using UA Monitoring mode is that it gives you the ability to make changes in post. For example: if you use the LA2A and you over compress, it will print that way and you can’t undo that.
If you’re confident that what you’re recording will be the final product, then go with UAD Rec, otherwise go with UAD Mon.
@@homestudioacademy thanks for the quick respond appreciated! Sorry I am new in the music production world, But I guess my question is, if I want to apply the UA plugins (instead of the Logic Pro plugins) in my vocal final mix after recording in monitoring mode is this possible?? If not I don’t see the advantage in investing in UA plugins if you can’t use the through Logic Pro in post production.
@@gwmanuel2 yes can use the UAD plugins in Logic Pro
"Slow attack" while using the fastest attack compressor on earth haha.
Not sure I follow what you’re saying. If you’re referring to the 1176, the settings are backwards than other compressors. Even Grammy Award Winning producer Greg Wells has said in this video: th-cam.com/video/X5S0mtKyjms/w-d-xo.html
@@homestudioacademy Correct, but I was meaning that even the slowest setting is still a blazing fast 800 microseconds lol (0.8MS). Which is insane.
Most units FASTEST setting is 1ms
@@SoundConstraints yes, the 1176 is very aggressive, that’s why most people use it with the Attack on 1.
This Apollo generation is a bit old now. I was waiting for the new Apollos this namm but 😢
Hey Studio Person! I agree, I wish new Apollos would come out on this NAMM as well… the volt series are great for most people though!
Appreciate this video and the clarity of your explanation. This broke down the UAD console tracking vs recording in DAW super clearly which I’ve been trying to understand better for a while. Console has seemed really intimidating to me, but this made it seem quite easy.
@@jovanniroland9208 thank you so much for leaving a comment! I’m happy to hear that the video helped you. Glad to help! 😊
Exaclty 😢 although the Apollo is fantastic in terms of plugins quality, Unison technology & low latency monitoring through its console, it’s not excellent at all in terms of converters and preamp performance. You can get far way better with Audient ID 24 for example with 1/4 - 1/3 the price. Excited to see a new generation of Apollos with totally new converters and pres.
@@ProVoiceBHyou definitely have broken ears..just say that your ass doesn’t know how to record and get a great sound doing so
Are those plugings free with apollo
Yes they are! 😊
@homestudioacademy one more question when recording vocal...do I use mono or stereo?thanks...and I am subscribed..
@@robsauls5302 you would record using a mono track since it’s only one input for your microphone. Thanks for subscribing!😊

I really need help. I have a ton of latency in Logic Pro X. I'm confused by the terms "recording through your DAW" verses "recording through the Apollo." Like, the Apollo is plugged in, how am I NOT recording through it?? Keep in mind: my buffer size is 32, my recording delay is 0, I've played with the sample rate, even have "Low Latency Mode" ON. And still, I just can't record without latency. What do I do??
@@jordankahn9298 are you using Universal Audio’s console app along with Logic Pro? You should be adding the effects (if recording) on the Console App and not in Logic Pro. Also, your audio track should be muted in Logic Pro and you should be monitoring the effects in the Console App.
Also, something else to try is under your settings, make sure to select “Low Latency Monitoring” in Logic Pro so there is no latency.
@@homestudioacademy Hi, yes I had the console app with Logic muted and no signal was coming though. Do I have to use UAD plugins for the signal to come through the app, or can the signal come through without having to create the chain of plugins?
@@jordankahn9298 if you’re monitoring through the console app make sure your track isn’t muted. You should be able to hear it even without any plugins.
Can someone help me find an expader gate for my app console? Of apollo of course
Expander gate? I don’t know of any gate plugins that come with the Apollo unfortunately. Maybe someone else knows if Universal Audio makes one plugin like that.
Hey question. I’m using this with obs to stream and obs is not picking up my mic? Any tip? Anyone
I’m not familiar with obs. Try making your input device on your computer to read as Universal Audio Apollo and see if that works.
@@homestudioacademy I tried it. It won’t read it though obs. Discord reads it. Counter strike 2 reads it. Obs… no go
@@Gummytrains sorry to hear that. I never used obs. I would try looking up tutorials here on TH-cam for obs.
are these plugins free?
They come included with the Apollo Twin. However, if you don’t have an Apollo, you can get access to them by signing up for Universal Audio’s Spark Subscription for $20/month.
The benefit with the Apollo is that they come included and you’ll own them for life. In addition, you’ll be able to use the plugins in real time, with zero latency and without putting any strain on your computer.
If you sign up for the spark subscription, you’ll use the plugins based on your computer’s processor and not in real time/zero latency.
I use FL and when i click uad mon @ 4:39 i cant hear the effects i can only hear them come thru when its on uad rec
Any solution?
@@Verbose_5 that is very weird. I’ve never had that issue in Logic Pro. I would reach out to Universal Audio’s support team to see if they can resolve this issue.
