I was so moved when he washed the feet of homeless youths one Holy Thursday. They were of many faiths, not all Catholics. It was a moving reminder that we are all children of God.

His Urbi et Orbi blessing during the pandemic. His concern for the world and his flock was etched on his face. He gave a frightened world a blessing only he could give. His stumble when he carried the heavy monstrance reminded me he is the Vicar of Christ. It was hauntingly beautiful.

No one is the vicar of Christ. That is an antichrist teaching. It is not in scripture. It was made up by organized religion. The role of the pope is idolatry. People literally worship him fall to their knees kiss his ring. None of this is biblical.

I really like that he reversed the Latin mass decision. I was raised Catholic but my dad was Russian Orthodox and he always said “the beauty of the Latin mass was that people from everywhere who spoke all sorts of languages were able to come to celebrate mass together and it wonderful.” Imagine that kind of togetherness nowadays…

    ADD TO THAT list:
    11. Pope Francis' declaration that, "Your pets will be with you in heaven." By that single and simple statement, Pope Francis changed the entire fundamental theology of the Catholic church, by declaring that our pet animals have an immortal soul too. The religio-philosophical implications of the Pontiff"s statement are profound.

      Pope Francis’ Decade of Division
March 15, 2023 Opinion ColumnNew York Times
      "
There is the two-front war that Rome finds itself fighting on doctrine and liturgy, trying to squash the church’s Latin Mass traditionalists while more gently restraining the liberal German bishops from forcing a schism on Catholicism’s leftward flank.
There is the latest example, in the grim case of the Jesuit priest-artist Father Marko Rupnik, of well-connected clerics accused of sex abuse who seem immune to the rules and reforms that are supposed to put limits on their ministry.
And then there are the grim numbers for the Francis-era church, like the accelerating drop in the number of men studying for the priesthood worldwide, which peaked around the beginning of Francis’ pontificate and has been declining ever since. Or the unhappy financial picture, now bad enough that the Vatican is charging higher rents to cardinals to compensate for years of deficits.
In the secular press the narrative of Francis as a great reformer was established early on, and as contrary evidence has emerged, the response has often been a decorous silence. It’s been mostly left to his conservative critics to compile the lists of clerics accused of abuse who have been given favorable treatment by this pontiff; or to harp on the failures of financial reform and the absence of any obvious renewal in the pews; or to point out that a pontificate that once promised to make the church less self-referential, less inward-focused, has instead produced a decade of bitter internal arguments and widening theological divisions - while Catholicism’s official verbiage is received with conspicuous indifference by the wider world.
      .............
Francis’ initial gambit involved a controversy much more clearly entangled with Catholic doctrine - the question of remarriage after divorce, where the very words of Jesus are at issue. Meanwhile, his larger approach has been to open controversies on the widest possible array of fronts: Sometimes through his statements, sometimes through his appointments, and for a while through the bizarre strategy of conducting repeated conversations with an atheist Italian journalist who famously did not take notes, leaving ordinary Catholics to puzzle over whether the pope had really denied, say, the doctrine of hell, or whether he was just content for readers of La Repubblica to think so.
All of this Francis has supplemented with a running critique of conservatives, and especially traditionalists, for being rigid and pharisaical and coldhearted, for being “all stiff in black cassocks” and wearing “grandma’s lace” - the equivalent of the father in the parable turning his elder son and chewing him out for being such an uptight weirdo. And when the traditionalist faction became, predictably, a locus for sometimes paranoid online opposition, the pope who preached decentralization and diversity embraced a micromanagerial cruelty, attempting the strangulation of Latin Mass congregations through such merciful gestures as forbidding their masses from appearing in parish bulletins.."

Could America clean up its language regarding the Mass. This lovely video used the term "traditional Latin Mass" to refer to the form of Mass celebrated widely in the Western Church in the period after the Council of Trent. The actual traditional Mass is the form returned to the universal Church by the Second Council at the Vatican. This is actually traditional.

I suspect the most consistent thing about life has to be its inconsistency. Don't all of us live with a fear of the unknown? It's this eerie inconsistency that keeps all of us living on the edges of our chairs.
Yet it was in this inconsistency that God had His finest hour. Never did the good in the world so intertwine with the bad as it did on the cross. God on a Cross. Humanity at its worst. Divinity at Its best.
God is not stumped by an evil world. He doesn't gasp in amazement at the depth of our faith or the depth of our failures. He knows the condition of the world and loves it just the same. For just when we find a place where God will never be (like on a cross) we look again and there He is, in the Flesh.
The Peace of God transcends all logic, scheming and efforts to explain it. This kind of peace is not a human achievement. It is a gift from above(John 14:27). The peace that kept His thoughts clear and Heart pure as He hung on the cross. This was His Peace. This can be your peace. - Max Lucado Calm Moments for Anxious Days
A life of faith does not guarantee immunity to troubles. This world is an ever-changing place and those changes are not always what we hope they will be. But while life may change, God's faithfulness to us does not. When worries leave you craving his constancy in this inconsistent world remember this.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 DMCB

      @@smc130 Very nice of you.
But is your position that the Francis papacy is normal, only slightly below par or good?
My position may sound hyperbolic and even nasty but there are many serious people who have criticised it just as harshly.
Ed Fesser, Academic Catholic theologian and philosopher:
"Catholic teaching has always acknowledged that popes can make grave mistakes of various kinds when they are not exercising the fullness of their authority in ex cathedra decrees. Usually, errant popes exhibit serious failings of only one or two sorts. But Pope Francis seems intent on achieving a kind of synthesis of all possible papal errors. Like Honorius I and John XXII, he has made doctrinally problematic statements (and more of them than either of those popes ever did). Like Vigilius, his election and governance have involved machinations on the part of a heterodox party. The Pachamama episode brings to mind Marcellinus and John XII. Then there are the bad episcopal appointments, the accommodation to China’s communist government, and the clergy sexual abuse scandal, which echo the mismanagement, political folly, corruption and decadence of previous eras in papal history. And now we have this repeat of Victor’s high-handedness. Having in this way insulted a living predecessor, might Francis next ape Pope Stephen VI by exhuming a dead one and putting the corpse on trial?
Probably not. But absolutely nothing would surprise me anymore in this lunatic period in history that we’re living through."
