It's worth the effort to place this in your photo for every different lighting condition. Better than waisting time in post. Excellent video. I really like the case for the color checker.
Awesome to sum it up. In Australia there was an offer to buy the SpyderX Pro and the 24 Checker as a package. I've seen you use that before so I took the plunge and glad I did. I use two monitors and had the problem the colour was different on them. After using the Spyder gadget they're virtually identical. I used the 24 Swatch version and on a few pictures yesterday and the result was amazing. I didn't get the case you use - but that may come with the 48 version. I've just got a double sided card, but that's cool and workable. Just proves you do know what you're talking about LOL .....as if there was any doubt! Awesome Jess simply awesome and Thank You
😄 Amazing! Thank you so much Rick and thank you for taking the time to send in that feedback and of course for clarifying that I do indeed know what I'm talking about 😜
I have the SpyderCHECKR 24 but never actually used it! Thank you for sharing a clear understanding of how to use it - I will definitely bringing with me on my next practice shoots.
Thanks a lot for this presentation! I use it a lot when shooting video. I'm able to achieve consistency between shots without it when shooting photos, but I'll include it in my workflow for my next shoot. It might save time in the end while achieving better results overal.
I had the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport but it's a bit old and seeing as I use the Datacolor Spyder X for calibration, I thought after watching this review I would order one from B&H. It arrived today and I realized I ordered the wrong one, I got the small passport version. I particularly wanted the tripod feature. Oh well try again wearing my glasses :)
This is a very new concept for me, I think I understand it, I’m anti-complex workflow but I see the purpose. I’d be interested in seeing it compared to a Shift+A correction
Ok you convinced me, just bought one! Actually because I’ve got some product photography to do and I’m hoping this will nail all the different colours of the products (there’s about 10 flavours). Thanks!
Got the small one.. would you do another check if the light conditions changed? Like if the sun came through or you move location. I also find it a bit awkward when balancing flash with ambient light.
If the light conditions change significantly enough for you to question it then I would do another check. You may find when you come to processing your work that the extra check was not needed and this will allow you to get a better feel on when to re-check. But for the sake of an extra minute to get the checkr out and use it, that is better than the frustration caused later on when you are like "I wish I had just re-checked, I knew the light had changed". 🙂
Thanks for sharing. Wondering which one is the latest version? Datacolor Newly released Spyder Checkr Photo (pocket size) or the one you are showing (bigger size)?
@@ThatPhotographySpot Also with the Calibrate Color Checker Passport, once an new icc profile is created it is automatically stored in the 'Profile' section of ACR or Lightroom, unlike Spyder Checkr Photo where newly created profiles are stored in the 'Preset' section. Are they doing the same thing? I thought preset is for colour grading and some effect but not icc profile. Can you explain?
I'm a wedding/event/portrait photographer, let's say i want to use this in a church with light bulbs where few are yellow, few are white and on top of that i use flash, how on earth would i use this? i want to use it, but different light sources, and also towards the altar is maybe different than towards the exit? please answer so i don't spend my money and get disappointed :) i really want to solve the horrible colors that i get on so many occasions but is it really possible? great explanation btw :) but i'm unable to find any videos on my scenarios, thank you in advance!
The 24 color one doesn’t come with a case however I’ve just received an email from data color that they have a new smaller one called Spyder Checkr Photo but it’s only about 5 x 4 inches with a case versus 8 x 6 for the 48 color with case that Jess has. My question to Jessica is the 5 x 4 too small? It’s a lot cheaper than the 48 one with case hence why I’m asking…. Thx so much. 🙂
Unfortunately we didn’t know a smaller version with a case was being released. It will be absolutely perfect for many people, just make sure it is a good size within the frame when capturing it 😊
The rotation of the Spyder Checkr was to save time later on when carrying out the white balance. Basically so I didn't have to rotate the template used in Photoshop ... all about the efficiency 🤓
Hey there, long time lurker with a tip here. I hate having to restart lightroom each time - so what I ended up doing was: 1. Create a folder that's easily accessible. 2. Change Spyderchkr preferences to deposit lightroom/acr presets into said folder. 3. After creating the profile, I use the Import Preset in develop module to easily and quickly navigate to the folder containing my new calibration 4. $$$
do you know if they both work with Camera Raw? I don't want to use Lightroom as it is not what I normally use- I tend to like Bridge then Camera Raw then Photoshop. Thanks~ I bought this and the Passport to try :)
Definitely picking this up!! What a nifty little tool! 😍😍 Quick question, when we but presets online, say etsy, and we download the file and load it into lightroom. Do we just do that or do we uncheck the whitebalance of the preset so it doesn’t mess with the raw photo’s color? Or does that not matter if we have this color pallet tool? What if we don’t have the color pallet yet and want to use a preset we bought for the time being? Hope that makes sense haha! Thank u!
Great explanation. I do have a question in terms of the black point: what is that value supposed to be? I have the passport and seemingly always screwed it up... wasn't setting the white point. Thanks so much.

I've been through many confusing videos about this. Thank you for the clear, no-BS solution!
I am glad this video finally answered your questions and helped you understand the process 🤓

Amazing! thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback 🙏
i highly agree with jess. correct colors by pre-adjustments (ICC profil & screen calibration) makes a huge impact on the picture quality.
👌

You're so welcome and thank you so much for that great feedback, we really appreciate it 🙏
It does not make a ICC profile? What about Photoshop wen you export your photo to Photoshop?
Awesome! Thanks Jess. Was just talking about white balance and colour correction, last week. Have the Spyder for my IPS, now ordering the checker 😊🐕🐾🐶
aww thank you Tanya 🙏 So pleased that's helped 👌
I love you and your explanation too, regards from Sevilla

Oh no, how devastating! I am sure the small passport version will still have good use 🙂
Oh man I have had a small one for years. I was just using the grey card side only. Now I have to find my SN to download the plug-in.
It'll be worthwhile once you've found it 👌

love your presentation quick and clear and bit funny also

That's great 👌 let me know how you get on
Is it enough to buy the Checker or should I buy the monitor calibration tool too?
Of course your monitor must be calibrated too 😉😁
I am using X-Rite Color Checker passport 2.

The pocket size one was released very soon after this video was done, though both work fine so whichever you prefer!

Whatever the main light will be for people’s faces, balance to that 👌
Would you recommend the passport and the cube or if you have the passport then the cube doesn’t do more for you? Taaaaa

Hi Jess - great video! How would one use the color checker in a landscape photograph? Or would you even use it? Thanks again!
You would use it the same way.
What is the reason why you had to rotate the Spyder?
Thanks and I love your online classes!
The rotation of the Spyder Checkr was to save time later on when carrying out the white balance. Basically so I didn't have to rotate the template used in Photoshop ... all about the efficiency 🤓

Hi Jess! Why do we need to use white balance card when we shoot with studio light with same yellow background eg? Isn't it always gonna be same?
You still need to set your white balance at the start of the session ideally to make things easier and more efficient further down the line 🙂
do you know if they both work with Camera Raw? I don't want to use Lightroom as it is not what I normally use- I tend to like Bridge then Camera Raw then Photoshop. Thanks~ I bought this and the Passport to try :)
I believe they do work in camera raw 🙂
@@ThatPhotographySpot they do- I tested it :) thanks!
Would you create multiple presets if the white balance changed or if you changed backgrounds for a single shoot?
Definitely picking this up!! What a nifty little tool! 😍😍
Quick question, when we but presets online, say etsy, and we download the file and load it into lightroom. It really is a great tool 👌 and absolutely, that makes sense however most presets don’t effect white balance so I think that should help 😊
X-Rite Color Passport - nice alternative and far more portable :-)
Sadly too small for us in the field most of the time, great for studio or headshots though!
So far above my understanding, however that's likely why I should have one lol 😆
With your enthusiasm and passion you'll soon nail it 👌We all need to keep learning 🤓
As a color blind person this may be a game changer for me
Absolutely! Really hope it works for you 😊
Want to bye this staff 👀🔥
Great explanation. I do have a question in terms of the black point: what is that value supposed to be? I have the passport and seemingly always screwed it up... wasn't setting the white point. Thanks so much.
I am not questioning the product, but to be honest, the results you are showing seems kind of oversaturated.
The result is true to the situations the images were shot. Nobody is saying you have to keep the colour the same in retouching 👌
Fast Forward to 4 minutes to skip lots of unnecessary talk.
Wow… Slow down…
