As a plus size woman who has made more the one sweater I can say that I can never follow the stitch count on a pattern and the best sweaters I have made (for myself and others) are the ones that I started off winging it taking inspiration from a pattern design. My best advice is to try the stitch you wanna use with different hook sizes, once you decide the one you like best do a swatch (it does not have to be big) and use it to measure your body to figure out your stitch count and then go from there. Keep trying the project on again and again and don't be afraid to change things, skip or add stitches to get the shape you want, re-do parts or even undo everything and start all over again. Almost every time I make a garment I do it from start to finish at least twice, I don't mind undoing the work because I rather invest the time and effort than wasting yarn on something I feel uncomfortable in or, worse, never wearing it. Just have fun and enjoy the process even with all the hesitations and frustrations, at the end you will have a piece to show off proudly
Noelia I agree completely. Keep trying it on again and again and don’t be afraid to change things to make it work. I love the process as much (ok, more) than the finished project, so I don’t hesitate to frog back and try again applying what I’ve learned. Sure there was a learning curve how to create garments to fit me, but that’s part of the fun in my book.

Your sweater is gorgeous! I can so relate to hesitating to try a pattern because I fear the plus size is not all that plus. Even on patterns from people I thought would know a plus sized body, I have been disappointed. I have made a couple of cardigans, but I have never made a sweater.
I feel your frustration. After spending time looking for the perfect pattern, spending money on the perfect yarn, only to have your vision blown to bits, I could spit nails.

I’m so grateful for you. I decided this year to make my first sweater. As a plus size woman I was so nervous. I have been calling it my ugly sweater and almost scrapped the whole project. Watching this video helped me get the courage to finish. After blocking it and weaving in the ends it looked AMAZING 🤩. Thanks for the encouragement to keep going!

I have made over 20 sweaters for myself. I have found a channel that makes garments to your measurements as opposed to pattern sizes. All you need is a tape measure and try on as you go. Works perfectly every time. I have also knit myself an Irish Aran sweater that took me six months. It was WAY out of my comfort zone but I stuck with it and now it is the garment I am most proud of. I wear it whenever I can. Thank you for this great video. Your sweater is gorgeous!

That's what I usually go for also. I got this mix problem of a short body and being a thicc girl with a larger chest which requires a longer length. Closest thing I've found that fit in store bought is those "boyfriend" shirts that are floating around now, which are essentially a slim cut man's T-shirt. As for the sweater she made, I'd have left the length and gone tunic style with it, but that's purely my taste and I like the movement.
When you mentioned finding a channel that works to dimensions, I somehow KNEW it was on the hook with Jeanne. LOL

Toni, this is the gold standard of videos. I’m brand new to crochet (following your granny square tutorials at the moment) and am excited for my first big project. I’m not starting with a sweater-I want to make *MY* afghan first. But this video provided so much encouragement and hope and was just a reminder that it’s hard because it’s new. Thank you. 💜
I think my favorite part is how happy you are wearing it. It makes me happy.
My top tip is to ALWAYS block your swatch. I made my first sweater from superwash merino. I didn’t block my swatch and didn’t know that superwash yarn grows quite a bit with washing. I still wear the sweater because I worked so hard on it, but I learned my lesson!
Came here to say the same thing! I think it's more likely the superwash treatment that caused the growth rather than the weight of the garment itself. The end result is absolutely amazing though!

I have made several wearables. And I have made so many mistakes/the pattern didn’t work for my body type. My advice would be, don’t be afraid to make those mistakes. Stretch that problem solving muscle. The pride I feel when I get a pattern to work for me, it’s pure joy. Honestly, once you start making wearables, you’ll find that you want to create your very own patterns. So I suggest finding a pattern you like and take your time. Problem solve as you go. It opens up a whole new world.

So glad I did! I really enjoyed your video and love how real you are! Fun! I’m like another gal said, would love 💕 to be your neighbor/friend! I am 74 and have been crocheting, knitting, and embroidering since I was about 10 years old. Not consistently but have made many hats, scarves and blankets! Never have made a sweater for anyone! I have never crocheted a sweater for myself. I am a Male, and I am slim, and I think that I would rather crochet a cardigan but I have not found the “right” pattern.

I've not made a sweater yet but plenty of cardigans. My husband teases me because I am always looking for new patterns. The fit, drape, and feel are never quite right with the ones I've made. You've inspired me to keep trying. Eventually, all the stars will align, and I will find the perfect pattern and yarn.

I’m so glad you showed your struggles working your sweater. It helped me realize that all my struggles are totally normal and that they can be conquered.
I skipped through the video a bit, and when I got almost to the end I was so excited that you were leaving the tails out. Then when you said you were weaving them in I got sad because the tails looked so cute and amplified the “I made this sweater and I’m proud of it.”

I have never made a sweater for myself. There are so many amazing ones I have seen... but... I'm quite chunky and I'm no good at sizing and yarn math so I get so nervous when it comes to figuring out the sizes I would have to make.

It was refreshing to see that even such an accomplished designer as you are struggled with making a sweater for yourself. That made me feel so much better about my occasional struggles with following a pattern, and getting the fit right for my own body. Maybe I'll tackle the challenge of making a pullover sweater for myself after all my crocheted Christmas gifts are completed. I've made many wearables over the past 5 years, and best advice I can give is to let go of perfectionism and let the mistakes happen. The mistakes are learning stepping stones! You learn best from making mistakes and puzzling out how to fix it VS just frogging and restarting!

This video was so amazing to watch! As a guy who's tried multiple times to make something that actually fits well on my body, it was very reassuring to see that you also went through that stage with your sweater too. I am transgender, so every bump and lump that I don't like is often accentuated by the cardigans that I try to make for myself, especially seeing as most patterns are made for the female form. One day I will make the masculine crochet sweater of my dreams that fits my body how I want it to... it's just a matter of trial and error I suppose!
I always have to remind myself that I GET to do this I don't HAVE to do this. No one will ever be able to take the things I make away from me and my talent. I also strongly suggest just jumping in and have fun! Failure doesn't happen, we have happy accidents and learning opportunities! Plus we can always try again! 💜💜💜

I've been crocheting for over 40 years and when I went to yarn shows over 20 years ago there may have been one or two other people of color. Seeing your video and seeing so many people of color, it makes me want to get back out there! I get along with everyone but I don't like feeling like the goldfish in the bowl. Catholic school gave me my fill of that. 😄

I love making sweaters. Gauge is so important as you found out. The difference in a hook or needle size will give you a sweater for you or for a different size. Also, try it on. Even if it's bottom up, you can see how much ease there is or isn't and how long you want to make it based on where you want your sweater or top to end. I have a long torso and flared hips, so my length is different from someone who doesn't have that. Most importantly: Don't give up. Frog it, put it in time out, wing some of it or all of it, but don't give up.

I am a sweater knitter-my advice for picking patterns is check out the projects made of that pattern and look for people that made your size and look like your body shape. That helps me decide which patterns my work best for my body. I can’t wait to see your next sweater!!
I finally knit a sweater vest (it felt unintimidating compared to a swear, but it was actually harder than the cardigan I'm doing now! I had to pick up the neck and sleeves, lol) after almost 20 years of knitting but never making a garment. OH MY GOD I LOVE IT. Knitting has been revolutionized for me. I've finally broken the barrier of using patterns by realizing maybe they're not as hard to read as a full-grown adult with lots of internet access than as a 12 year-old who had to use the library computer to look stuff up. Now I just want to make garments! I'm finishing a cardigan for my mom right now, am going to immediately dive into a more customized version of the same cardigan for myself, then there's an idea for a sideways sweater vest, and maybe a skirt? Agh, It's a whole new world.

Yes, quite a few actually. I was a returning crocheter (retired pro weaver and dyer who prior to that was a handspinner with own sheep and did a bit of crochet--but that was a LONG time ago and most was knitting. with handspun) because I needed better crochet basics. I discovered Tunisian through her videos and now my 2 crochet favorites are Tunisian (I have her book too) and overlay crochet--and found for some things like mosaic done via Tunisian. She has some very good fairly basic Tunisian videos to get you started--which is what got me started on Tunisian--and then learned about her book when she talked about it being published. Check out her channel--she has a playlist with 49 Tunisian videos.

This was the best crochet video ever!!! I love you so much!! I laughed with you, freaked out with you and then celebrated with you. I rarely stick to a pattern, I usually will have to tweak it to make it fit me cause most patterns are not correct for my body type!! I make a lot of stuff for myself to wear and my dumb butt never writes down what I did to change the pattern so I never can make another 🤦🏽♀️. Thank you so much for allowing me to join you on your sweater journey!! Oh and I just got your book and I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time trying to learn Tunisian crochet!! I just started crocheting my first sweater two days ago & I am experiencing so many of the same feelings and obstacles you describe in this video. I am sitting here in tears of empathy, compassion, and hope. Thank you for making this video. Second, thank you for your honesty about the whole Rhinebeck sweater mystique, the pressure involved, and the general issues involved in making a sweater for yourself. Thank you too for noting the issues around grading patterns. There is more to it than just increasing or decreasing the stitch count. The crochet & knitting worlds need more of this!

Been watching you for at least 2 years and have learned so much from you! Looks like you had an amazing time at the festival!!! How I would love to do that!!!!🥰 This was so much fun!!! Oh,,,I have made many sweaters....for myself and others...just remember to try on as you go....different yarns are going to work up differently.....some may grow, some may not and some may not play nice at all....but the journey is worth it. And don't lock yourself in to the "color" that's on the pattern or eventhe yarn...!! Be adventurous and pick colors you to wear and a yarn that's similar...you can alwayschangethe hook size for fit...make notes as you go....and do YOU!! Be safe, be happy and be blessed!!!🥰
I learned how to crochet when I was a teenager. I visited a senior living center with my summer camp and learned from very gracious and loving ladies. I pick it up every now and then but now I want to spend more time crocheting regularly. I found your channel the other day and already subscribed. My next project will be a cardigan and this video is great to prepare me! And your husband is so sweet!

So last year I made a sweater, loved the process but got the gauge wrong and it was too small. I felt so discouraged I didn't make another one. After this video, I am blocking the too small sweater in the hopes that I can stretch it AND most importantly I am planning on making a new sweater that I can love and wear with pride! Thank you!

If it’s still not right, consider pulling the seams apart and adding some panels to the sides and shoulders to make it the right size.
You could even do the panels in a cable pattern or another stitch to add interest. That way they become a feature of the garment and an upgrade.
I don't have a good relationship with my mom and I just think it's so lovely that you and your mom share this interest and she's so proud of your work on your sweater (as she should be!!). Thanks for sharing this whole journey. ❤
TL a time ago I mentioned that I have worked with you earlier and how I have returned to relearn, refollow with you again. I really enjoy participating in craft projects. Many of your group including you are very much younger than I and probably weren't even born when I began knitting. My grandmom taught me to crochet and knit when I was a little girl. My grandmom would look at a picture and WA LA she could produce it. When she discovered my interest in crafting she said she wanted me read a book that covered all of the crafts; she didn't want me learn the manner in which crafted. I crocheted, knitted and sewed in spells. One project I worked with was a jumpsuit; I wish I had kept it, I can't recall what happened to it, I do recall I had help completing the project and it was beautiful. I mentioned this because of your excitement over your sweater; and I felt the same way when I worked on my pantsuit project. I found the pattern, I think I would like do it again.

never made a sweater but i've made tops and other wearables, and if i have one piece of advice to give to the newbies about making your own clothes, you have to be enjoying it, because there will be parts you have to undo, and if you're not enjoying the act of making it, its gonna feel like a chore and its gonna be torture.
on another note, you look amazing in your sweater and you making sure the sleeves have the same stripes makes me very happy

This video is amazing! From the anxieties, to that BEAUTIFUL collar, to the important (and relatable) note about plus sizing, i'll definitely be watching it again when I make my first sweater. I'm still relatively new to crocheting, I learned how to do it from your videos in 2020, so it was honestly pretty relieving to see someone who in my eyes is goddess at crocheting feel some trepidation towards making their first sweater! It came out amazing, you should be proud.

Well done making your first sweater. It looks beautiful on you, really complimenting your skin tone.👏 As you were explaining the process, I felt your pain. I felt the same when I crocheted my first dress using my own design - the worry! But just like you, I felt on top of the world when I finished it and it fit me better than anything I owned. I still get compliments on it years later. Thanks for the tip on blocking heavy projects using steam. I'll be trying that next time.😊

You are more than brave to do such a huge “first” in such a tight time frame. First, to use so many colors on a first sweater is huge. To match the colors throughout the sweater is huge. To do a gauge swatch and then have the gauge be wrong for your body AND to keep going, gigantic! Love the end result. I love how God uses the mundane to teach the divine. You learned so many lessons and shared the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! Love your transparency! Congratulations on finishing.

Congrats on finishing your first sweater! I too had to learn early on how to modify patterns to fit my individual body and preferences. At this point, patterns are simply a guide and I've used YT to learn different ways to tailor patterns to my personal needs and wants. The more sweaters you make, the more you learn about what styles, methods and modifications work best. Good luck with your future makes!

This video made me feel a lot better. I am pattern testing for someone and it’s been a tougher thing for me than I thought (I’m new to reading patters not just video tutorials) and I was feeling so down bc I felt like I was the only one in the testing group that was struggling. Seeing someone like you show the hard parts and the frustration makes me feel so much better and that we all have these moments in our yarn journey. I feel much less down now :)
This sweater is beautiful. I love the colors on you and you did a really nice job. As a plus size woman you really hit some great points. I've never made anything for myself to wear but you've inspired me to look into it more. Also I really appreciate your talk on grading a pattern for plus sizes. I mean really, no matter how big my belly or butt is, my arms are not any longer. I have so many store bought items that have such long sleeves that I'm just pretty sure they are not the right length for anyone. Great video!

I have been crocheting for 54 years and I have never made a sweater. Shawls, ponchos, other wearables, but never anything with sleeves. I cannot sew (as my friend says, "It's crocheting, not sewing"), so I cannot piece together individual pieces that most patterns have you create. And I simply don't think I can make a top down or bottom up sweater to fit. But I enjoyed this video immensely. All my friends go to Rhinebeck, but as a caretaker, I cannot travel, so I appreciate the vicarious tour. Thanks, Toni!

It was very cute!😊 I’ve thought about making a Sweater for myself, but haven’t. I, too, am plus sized. My Mom knitted a boatneck sweater for me when I was a teenager, also a hat which I still have. I haven’t decided what style of sweater I want to make. I’ve considered cardigans, pullovers, tops, but not any particular stitches or motifs. At 71, it’s a matter of picking something, and making it.
Hello form the UK. I have always loved to knit jumpers. I have found your channel fantastic and love how you teach what you do to those like me a newbie to venture out into the crochet world and away from the Granny pattern that I have used for years. I feel I would love to do a shawl to wear in bed when reading. My grandmother made me a knitted one so long ago and would love to have a crochet one just for that sitting in bed moment. I have crocheted and knit for over 50 years. Never made a sweater. Simply because it’s just too much. Too much brain power, focus, stitch counting….. just so complicated. Plus I have put on weight. So, another reason. But I like my crochet or knit projects to be relaxing. So I can sit and crochet, hold a lap cat, talk to my hubby, and watch a show. All at the same time. I gave it my best friend and she loved it, and I have made another sweater and another cardigan since :-) My advice for someone who never has: Start with a chunky one - it will be simpler design-wise and you won't be stressed "wasting" expensive, smaller yarn.
