I admit, I've made a few garments and I never gauge either. I just try the garment on every few rows to make sure it still fits and if it doesn't, I adjust the stitch count 😂
The last 4 minutes of this video are pure joy. The dance you do because of how comfortable and happy you feel! Sweater-making is definitely a super power.
Okay Toni, you’ve convinced me. Ive been crocheting for 47 years and never have made myself (or anyone) a piece of clothing. As soon as I finish my Christmas WIPs, I am going to try making myself a sweater 😬 wish me luck.
24:18 OMG, Toni casually dancing and vibing in her sweater while talking about the crafting process was such a cute moment! You've got me this close to buying up a bunch of colors and making one of my own.
Toni, I love this so much!! I'm obsessed with your sweater and your new yarn! LOVE!! Placed my yarn order this morning and am so honoured you would make one of my patterns!
Another plus-sized crocheter here… One thing I am really trying to be more disciplined about is wet blocking my gauge swatch and letting it dry before measuring it. Courtney Clarke had a great point in one of her videos that we will eventually need to wash any garment we make and so we should to treat the swatch the same way we plan to launder it. Looking back on some of my sweater fit mishaps, I think it’s because I met gauge without blocking, then the sweater stretched during blocking, making it too large.
Also about gauge swatching, idk if you mention it later but always measure pre-washing and post washing. Nothing more frustrating than taking time to make a swatch, knit the perfect garment and then see it grow x10 after washing.
I love your sweater! I have been thinking about doing the same pattern and seeing your progress has sold me! I cannot wait to buy happy place yarn. You are amazing and I am so happy for you! Let’s go!!
As a 3rd grade teacher, Im totally feeling the 'pencil vibes' this sweater is giving! I may need to make a copycate version ! Cant wait to get your yarn in my hands 🎉 Congrats, Toni! 🎉
Here a year later. I absolutely LOVE raglan style garments! Like, I won’t make any other type of clothing item unless it’s raglan bc I don’t have time or patience to sew panels together 😂 but props to all the crocheters that do so! Toni, if you happen to share any raglan tutorials (sweaters, cardigans) on TH-cam, I’m so here for it!!❤
I love MJ patterns. Made about 5 sweaters. As for ribbing- I find it always a little loose so I would do a row of single crochet skipping stitch here and there to tighten it up. Also, I never make a gauge swatch if I follow MJs pattern, I find her measurements to be true to size
I 100% agree there is nothing as empowering as making your own sweater. I dragged my feet for years on becoming a garment maker, but once I dove into the process I was hooked! I have now made 7 garments both knit and crochet as well as pullovers and cardigans. I've even made things for other people. I love your channel and your infectious enthusiasm. Thanks so much for being here.
I just wanted to say You are BEAUTIFUL! I love the way you presented yourself and how amazed you are at how well your garment turned out. Your humility is palpable. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
Toni, your vibes and energy are always top-notch, and this video is no different - the back-to-back double-whammy of the pencil colorway revelation and the climate change bit had me rolling on the floor! You are so right - fibre crafts feel like they should be powerful enough solve just about anything 😁 Your sweater is fabulous (I'm so glad the fates helped you choose this color combo!) and Pepper is just darling!
I have been eyeing that pattern for a while now!! I am so glad that you did it. But what I really want you to do is the one that you did to wear to the Beyonce concert! I love that sweater. It is so cute and I would love to see how you did it. I am also plus size and hate premade sweaters. You give me hope that maybe I would like them if I made them!! Thanks again for what you do!!
This video brought me lots of needed giggles. Your comment about looking like a pencil had me loling. Thank you for being you and making these wonderful videos. ❤ You're the reason I now crochet about as much as I knit.
Thank you for sharing how much time it took (even if your original goal was very ambitious)! It helps the rest of us set realistic expectations. I feel like a lot of creators don't share that enough. Congratulations on the launch of your yarn!
I tripped across your video and stayed to watch. I am a knitter but your enthusiasm is infectious! You have one of the most beautiful and welcoming smiles I've ever seen. I am a fellow Michigander living in Mexico. Thank you for reminding me of everything and everyone beautiful in our lovely state!
I turn your videos on while I am crocheting. Your voice is so soothing it makes crocheting relaxable. I don’t even know what you are saying, it’s just pleasant. Thank you.
The sweater is gorgeous. I'm so Happy for you and your new fibers. Happy Place looks lovely. And I'm so proud that you are from Michigan and are working with Hobbii. Thank you for sharing this video.😊
I love your sweater! The colors you choose are lovely..but what I like the most about your sweater is the smile it brings to you! You can tell it makes you feel great! 🧶😎
Welcome to the garment making club Toni! You are such a joy to watch. You said two really important things for new-to-garment crocheters. 1: it’s just yarn. If you don’t like it, frog it and try again. If nothing else you will have learned something along the way. And 2: consider the first one a mock up. Make it. Block it. And then take a look at where you need more/fewer stitches or rows to make it fit better the next time. If I end up with a wearable garment the first time doing a pattern that’s a bonus. Otherwise, it’s back to number 1!
Wow awesome! I crocheted several cardigans years ago but this time trying knitting again. As I'm typing this I'm impatiently waiting for my video to upload showing my progress. I'm beyond excited 😂 yes we have superpowers ❤
Your encouragement to create really means so much to me. I struggle so much with perfectionism it can weigh so heavy on me. Hearing your speech at the end almost moved me to tears. That kind of message, crochet or not, I need remind myself often. Thanks for sharing your skills and message with us! ❤
Wish I crocheted more than a single or double crochet because that is absolutely gorgeous! I love the sleeves. I love the neckline. I love the length. I love it all!
Would you believe me if I told you this is mainly double crochet? The only stitches I use are double crochet and single crochet and chain throughout this entire sweater.
Just found your channel with the video about 25 crochet hacks. I’ve been crocheting for 47 years. Some of these I had discovered (the keeping track of your chain count with stitch markers). But these are so helpful and so genius. I’ve watched other Crochet channels too… and I have to say, your help is at the top off my list! SUBSCRIBED
I have the same problem with sweaters. My bust is bigger than Shoulders. So top down I usually do a size smaller for the yoke then add rows without increasing if possible. I love this one & your color choice!
Can't even imagine being able to accomplish this but your lively video to make it happen is making me think maybe I could manage it. Love your channel! You're delightful!!
My sister's little dog also hates thunderstorms. She had great success with thunder coats. They are expensive but it was worth the money for the sleep for her. Good luck with your new pup. It will get better. Also your sweater is super cute. I enjoy crocheting your your videos.
I totally stumbled across this video right after I started this same sweater pattern! And I'm from Michigan too! This is my third attempt at a sweater for myself and I'm feeling good about this one. Seeing your joy is definitely encouraging!
i LOVE your sweater, but more than that, I love that you are brave enough to make it. I've been crocheting for many years and never made anything more substantial than a blanket, scarf or shawl. Someday.... I will be brave enough. Love your channel!!!
@kedowning is spot on. Wet block your gauge swatch. You need to know how your fiber is going to behave when you need to clean it. Some things shrink and some grow. Be sure to measure the gauge BEFORE AND after you wet block that way you can figure out what the unblocked gauge needs to be to get the washed and dried gauge you want. (Ask me how I learned that one) Here’s a tip to make wet blocking easier and the drying time way shorter: use your washing machine. Take your sweater out of the sink in a tub straight to your washing machine, put your sweater in and run the machine on a spin only cycle. That will get way more water out of your sweater than you ever could with a towel. So much easier, too. I do this with all my knit and crochet garments, blankets, shawls no matter the fiber ( wool, cotton, silk,..). Also, when you lay your garment out on the blocking mat to dry use a yardstick or tape measure and be sure you are not stretching any part bigger than the final dimensions you want it to be. Use the final dimensions in the pattern schematic as a guide. BTW I am a plus size 3xl so I can say with confidence wet blocking is easy if you wet block and dry your gauge swatch and use the spin cycle. Depending on the fiber in your yarn, it will stretch with the weight of the garment when being worn even if it is dry. Hang your wet gauge swatch with some heavy earrings on the bottom to simulate the weight of the garment as it hangs on you. Let the swatch hang with the weights until you see no change in the length then measure for gauge. this will help you adjust gauge for the tendency of the fiber to grow once it is being worn.
I was born in Michigan... Live on the west coast since I was a baby. I love to visit family. I adore the lakes and grass! Then I see the rusted out cars, and... I'm good herell
That sweater is beautiful! I am in the middle of crocheting my first sweater! I love watching your videos and learning how to be able to crochet something I can wear. I'm nervous but I'm going for it! 😊
This has inspired me to make my own top down granny stitch sweater. I just found some nice marbled yarn in my stash. Have you seen Cinnamon Stitches TH-cam? She does a top down sweater in a 3x, but it's fully adjustable to all sizes. She has size inclusive patterns and demos the larger size.
Hello Toni! I just saw that you mentioned your new puppy and the storms & other pet anxiety problems. I thought I'd offer some unsolicited pup advice. Because you've shared all the crochet knowledge for free to all of us. First, If you haven't heard of "crate training" I would highly recommend this. Some people act like it's mean lol but it's literally no different then putting your human baby in a crib for their own safety as well as eventually it being a place of comfort. Next, I do with my animals just as I did with my human children. Get them used to their surroundings. I personally was told over 30+ years ago to NEVER EVER BE QUIET AROUND MY BABY. To play music or a TV in the background, plus soothing FAN noises help cancel out outside noises. Even when I leave the house I put a TV on so my pup didn't notice ever for opening & closing, ever beep, horn, and delivery. As far as storms unfortunately, besides the noise our fur babies can feel the changes in barometric pressure, as well they can feel static electricity more than us. I saw these pet beds that reduce all of these anxieties& give them a safe place to cuddle either next to you or somewhere furthest from the storm noise. One need I saw recently is on Amazon "Ethical Pets Sleep Zone Cuddle Cave - Pet Bed for Cats and Small Dogs - Attractive, Durable, Comfortable, Washable. by SPOT, Sage, 22x17" the sage & beige cuddle cage is only $19.99 vs the other colors for $29. Anyway, I thought maybe one for your new pup baby& another for your beloved cat. Good luck & keep sharing all your joy.
I simply love this! The Tunisian crochet seems to be a perfect solution to my desire for knit look (which I’m horrible at) and the hook of the crochet! I am a spinner and have my own sheep, working on spinning my first fleece constantly to create my first sheep to shawl project! ❤️🥰❤️ thank you so much for these great videos!
You are so sweet and adorable! I am new to your channel and I enjoyed so much watching the whole process! I am also a plus size girl and I haven't tried to make anything for me. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get it right and just feel defeated. Watching you doing yours has been soothing to my soul. I learned so much!! Now I feel confident that I can make one for myself because you showed how you adjusted the pattern for your needs and taste. Also watching you do your happy dance at the end filled my soul with joy. 😊 Thank you so much for sharing!! ❤❤❤ You are a blessing!
When I say I’m so happy I happened upon your channel. You had me when I saw you making wearables for someone almost my size. Then you use the term honeybees I looove bees 🐝 then the show ultimatum I will be watching and crocheting regularly thank you for being the most relatable I’ve seen in a long time.
I never gauge swatch, regret it later, then proceed to do the same thing on my next project 😂
I’m usually not regretting it however I usually have something else go wrong instead 😅
Same 😂
Same here😂
I admit, I've made a few garments and I never gauge either. I just try the garment on every few rows to make sure it still fits and if it doesn't, I adjust the stitch count 😂

The fact that it was not completed in the originally target 24 hours made this a very realistic and likeable video blog entry.
Toni, I love this so much!! I'm obsessed with your sweater and your new yarn! LOVE!! Placed my yarn order this morning and am so honoured you would make one of my patterns!
