My pick is the opening to the original FF7 on the PS1. The cinematic opening of Aerith looking at the lifestream in a Midgar alley as it zooms out showing people walking the streets and culminating with the train pulling in to intro you to Cloud and Barret starting out is heart poundingly brilliant. It successfully peaks your interest and then subsequently throws you right into the action. It was a chefs kiss moment for 12 years old me when I first booted it up in 1999!
The Legend of Dragoon. When it got a port onto the PS4, I played it right away and was brought back in time...such a wonderful game with a unique battle system for an RPG.
For someone who loves deep cuts, the deepest of cuts has been criminally ignored. Come on, Jules! The Legend of Dragoon is the best RPG I’ve ever played, and boy have I played too many of them.
@@FearlessSec I second this motion that LoD should be a deep cut with Jules Gill baby. With a great story with political strife, betrayal and some wonderful boss battles like Doel and Lenus.

A link to the past has some good classic opening the opening music was good too, i think what make it stand out for me is how simple and dark the opening was.
Alright Jules, Best video game opening for me is still Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The epic music, the violence as Kain rips Raziel's wings off, and the simple "Cast him in" as Kain sets off the events that will mark 3 more games worth of time traveling, vampire slaying shenanigans
Final fantasy vii Syphon filter Gran turismo Syndicate wars Dead or Alive Tomb Raider Resident Evil Metal gear solid Wipeout Driver...... I forgot how good that console was, and how much time I spent on it.😅
Great List, but as far as openings go, obvious choice FF7. but one of my all time favorites is Parasite Eve, amazing opening, I hope we get remake of that one soon
For best opening, gotta go with Fallout 3. The slow reveal of a bombed out Washington DC while "I don't want to set the World on Fire" plays, combined with Ron Pearlman's iconic voiceover sets the tone for the game world perfectly. Still gives me chills to this day.
Where was Silent Hill or Spyro? I also would have gone with Tomb Raider 2 over the first. But that's just me. As for greatest opening? You really can't go wrong with Final Fantasy VIII or X. Those first few minutes of epic music aling with the action just get you pumped for what is to follow. And if we're talking opening levels, then I have to give it to Nier: Automata. Just the variety and crazy action prepare you for the masterpiece that is to follow.
My pick for the greatest opening OF ALL TIME is tekken 5s intro. I still get goosebumps seeing Heihachi and Kazuya fight off a hoard of Jacks together.
Crash 2 over 3 BLASPHEMY. How was it casualized?¿? Game was just as hard to find secrets and most casuals couldn't even beat it just as they couldn't beat 2 or 1.
This may be a weird pick but the opening to Guitar Hero Metallicas career mode is so cool, this was around guitar heros peak so everyone had a plastic guitar, and watching the band come out in slo-mo to a roaring concert, the game logo flashes and without interruption a bell starts tolling and for whom the bell tolls begins, all of that build up for one the bands most popular songs still gives me chills and made me feel like a real rockstar
Greatest Gaming Openings: Most Likely that I've played: Final Fantasy 7 Bomb Run Opening (Yeah its that good.) Sonic The Hedgehog 1. Super Mario Bros 1. Mega Man X Highway Personal Deep Cuts: Mega Man Legends Ruins Run Virtua Fighter 2 vs Lau Chan (Music on that stage is rent free in my brain) Sonic Adventure 2 City Escape(I just triggered the soundtrack in your brain, you're welcome.)
Mirrors edge! The intro throws you into this colourful world straight into the freerunning and it hooks you instantly, only to then show you everything going wrong and within a few minutes you're now in this world of solving a mystery whilst jumping across buildings
My suggestion for best opening: Thats tough...I mean if we are talking about openings like the title screens, I could recommend a bunch of fighting game ones. DBZ Budokai 2, Tenkaichi 1-3, DoA, Tekken 4, these had some opening movies that literally got me pumped and excited for the rest of the game. Sometimes I would let the game idle just to loop back around and watch these all over again. For openings ever...I think two I personally would recommend is God of War 2018 because after the way GoW3 ended, and you thought that was the end for Kratos, and then it being years later and seeing how it opened up the rest of the game, this scene hit pretty hard. The other being Splatterhouse because although the game itself was kinda meh, the opening really stuck with me and how quickly it was able to set up the atmosphere, story, and the character of the game. That, and the bone gnashing transformation looked brutal yet awesome.
Sony, or another studio, absolutely need to do something about PS1 and 2 games preservation. The fact whole childhoods could be on lost floppies is surely some sort of crime... jk Seriously, I need Spiderman with yellow fog back in my lfe.
Love your content 99.999% of the time. You all, however, dropped the ball big time this time. Parasite Eve, Azure Dreams, XCom UFO Defence, Brigandine.....and yeah, I could just keep going. Think this list was just played way too safe.
Metroid Prime 3 had a stellar intro! The entire Norion and GFS Olympus section was a great energetic episode setting up the player for the story after the intro ends.
I agree with some of these choices, but Tomba 1 and 2 are the 2 best games on the console hands down. Nothing can match the atmosphere and visuals of those games, it had so many interesting thing you could do, it feels like it could be released today and it wouldn't be out of place. I recently watched someone's condensed playthrough of FF7 and somehow, despite being in their mid 20's, they managed to avoid all spoilers for the game. As such, it was rather wholesome seeing them experience the story for the first time. They ended up making it their favorite FF game (though to be fair, I think they've only played FF8 as well, lol). Still, for a game that old to still engross someone from an era of shinier games goes to show just why FF7 has withstood the test of time (and that's not saying the other titles aren't good as well. And TRUST me, Square Enix WILL eventually remake all of them. Too much money to be made not to, lol). I too count 7 as my favorite, or rather, my favorite Final Fantasy franchise. The original Crisis Core is doing bettle in my head with Remake as to which is the actual favorite 😂
Best openings of all time: Uncharted The Lost Legacy. The opening chapter of this game is visually dense, well paced and tutorialized without being boring. Features well handled exposition, introducing your ally and the villain in an entertaining way. The gameplay steadily builds from walking, to light exploration, to stealth, to combat, to running across rooftops in a climactic escape sequence. It’s a perfect vertical slice of the game.
My favorite game opening is not one I expect anyone to agree with and that's the one for Kingdom Hearts 3D. Yes, we fans loved the first opening with the iconic "Simple & Clean" sung by Utada, followed up with the fantastic "Sanctuary". But for me, Simple and Clean has always been my favorite song of the franchise and hearing it in orchestral form just slammed like a ton of bricks to the heart with its beauty (I'd recently been made aware that Square Enix also hosts actual concerts for their games), with memories of the prior games coming back. I was elated to be starting a new journey but damnit, I ALWAYS cry at the end of KH games, because I don't like having to say "goodbye" to another journey 😅. Well, at least until KH3. We don't talk about 3 😂. But the 3D graphics on the 3DS mixed with the song was just a 1-2 punch to the feels and I sob like a baby when I see that opening, lol. For evoking to strongest response I've ever had to a frickin opening, it takes my top pick.
Oh the best opening? Tales of Arise. Berseria is really nice too, but Arise. Was damn good. Just damn good. Goosepumps no matter how many times I look at it.
Greatest openings? Mass Effect 2 definitely comes to mind, but … on the deeper cut, I really loved the opening to Chrono Cross on the PS1. Great music and impressive CG for the time, I watched it pretty much every time I fired up the game. BTW, whatever happened to Parasite Eve? I’m surprised Square Enix hasn’t dusted off that IP.
I would personally have included Hogs Of War it took the formula of Worms & absolutely perfected the gameplay, the comedic witty lines from the games narrator are also well timed & only add to how great the game is. Absolute incredible underrated gem
I would love to see "Games that came out too late in a consoles life to get better appeal" in a Deep Cut with Jules Gill, BABYYY. Aidyn Chronicles was a 2001 n64 title with some wonky controls and graphics but had a great combat system, unique magic system and really unconventional fantasy that didn't have elves or dwarves, but unique races with cool aesthetics, a wide variety of dialogue based on "diplomacy" stats which makes every playthrough unique if you play right There's just too much I love about this game! Would love this underrated, flawed gem to get some attention someday since THQ Nordic never will
Best intro: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Dripping in atmosphere, sets the stage for the story incredibly well, stellar voice acting, and transitions directly to the actual game.
For me, the FF8 opening credits will always have 1st place on my list. Remember that the video pushed the PS1 graphics card to its limit, and after 25 years, it still looks bloody awesome!
Every of the 1 to 4 Tony Hawk games had the best openings. In my opinion, Ace of Spades by Motorhead playing to the montage of skateboarding footage for THPS 3 would be my favourite, I watch it start to finish almost every time. The same goes to THPS 4's TNT by ACDC too.
For me… best intro was Final Fantasy X and X-2. Both used music to help set the tone of what you were in for. A hard rock to show the journey would not be easy and then a pop song to show it was a lighter and familiar world.
My "Greatest Video Game Opening", if I had to pick only one, would be the intro to Final Fantasy IX/9. The whole scope of it to me at the time was mind blowing!
Best opening is from Star Trek: Klingon Academy. Christopher Plummer hamming it up as General Chang is pretty hard to beat. That game had to be spread out over 6 discs to fit all the video they shot with him, David Warner (reprising his own Star Trek VI role as not-yet-Chancellor Gorkon) and others.
Best video game openings? Chrono Cross, beautiful visuals, and Times Scar? Absolutely fantastic, though I'm from Nova Scotia, so that kind of music is big here.
Take out GT2, Castlevania and Tekken 3 (although it was class) and replace for CTR, Silent Hill and Dino Crisis 2 and you've more or less got mine. I'd like to squeeze NHL98 in though, but can't think what to take out!
Greatest gaming openings? Tough for me to choose but I'd definitely expect to see Breath of the Wild, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Halo Combat Evolved, and Half-Life on there.
So one, where the FLIP was Spyro??? And two, doom 2016s intro got me so hyped and pumped, I could have burst my way through a wall like koolaid man. That, was an intro.
might be too late to get one in. but Stray's opening. You start off as a cute little kitty and then that literal drop happens. my heart was torn, tears were rolling down and i could not be more devastated at seeing a cute lil kitten hobbling around after a great fall before fainting for god knows how long
New and Tasty isn't a remake it's a reimagining of the original story. RE 4 and the new FF 7 also shouldn't be called remakes as those as well are reimaginings, a remake is the same exact game with updated graphics and maybe a few quality of life features and fixes. Remasters are usually just a few tweaks here and there. And reboots are starting all over from scratch.
when i think of ps1 games i always think about a demo i had back in the day with metal gear solid, wwf warzone, gran turismo 2, spyro the dragon, etc. it was my intro to disc games. before that all i had was nes/snes. and i had a sega saturn with a couple games like sum toy clocktower game, hoard and sega rally championship
Resident Evil was mind blowing at the time. Just a couple years before, we were playing Super Mario Bros, which was a great game. But nowhere near the level of realism of Resident Evil.
Best video game opening for me would have to be God of War 3. Following the literal cliffhanger ending of GoW II straight into an epic multi-stage boss fight with Poseidon is an excellent dose of unadulterated badassery.
Best game opening? Final Fantasy VII is etched into my mind. When I was first even thinking about looking at buying a new console, my friend showed me that opening among many others on a VHS tape. I watched FF7 over and over as it stood out as how to take an entire game world and wordlessly take it from Midgard to the player controlled cloud!
Onimusha 3 has the greatest opening of all time in my opinion. It’s like a short kung fu film with fight choreography by Donnie Yen. I used to start the game just to watch the opening.
For Greatest Video Game Openings: The very first “God of War” for the PS2. It starts off with the main protagonist about to commit suicide, then we jump back three weeks to see how we got here. It just grabs your attention right away!
To name a bunch that didn't make the list; Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wipeout 3, Front Mission 3, Grand Theft Auto 2, Xeno Gears, Star Ocean 2, Tomb Raider III, Diablo, R-Type Delta, Tactics Ogre, Armored Core.
My pick is the opening to the original FF7 on the PS1. Both used music to help set the tone of what you were in for. A hard rock to show the journey would not be easy and then a pop song to show it was a lighter and familiar world.
Best opening: Kingdom Hearts 2. Recapping the first and chain of memories to a badass song was great.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It hits you RIGHT in the nostalgia, while also getting you excited for the incredible adventure to come
Was just passing by until I heard Jules voice. Now I’m here to the end 🎉
Siphon Filter
So one, where the FLIP was Spyro???
And two, doom 2016s intro got me so hyped and pumped, I could have burst my way through a wall like koolaid man. That, was an intro.
Resident Evil 2s intro ranks up there. It lets you know what you're in for from the get go.
Mass Effect 2 had one of my favorite intros, just getting spaced and being like... wat?
Super memorable.
Not ps1
might be too late to get one in. but Stray's opening. You start off as a cute little kitty and then that literal drop happens. my heart was torn, tears were rolling down and i could not be more devastated at seeing a cute lil kitten hobbling around after a great fall before fainting for god knows how long
Original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis definitely had one of the best openings (and say it with me now) of all time
New and Tasty isn't a remake it's a reimagining of the original story. RE 4 and the new FF 7 also shouldn't be called remakes as those as well are reimaginings, a remake is the same exact game with updated graphics and maybe a few quality of life features and fixes. Remasters are usually just a few tweaks here and there. And reboots are starting all over from scratch.
I think Mizzurna Falls deserved a spot
when i think of ps1 games i always think about a demo i had back in the day with metal gear solid, wwf warzone, gran turismo 2, spyro the dragon, etc. it was my intro to disc games. before that all i had was nes/snes. and i had a sega saturn with a couple games like sum toy clocktower game, hoard and sega rally championship
No 1 could have been the Final Fantasy Quadrilogy of 7,8,9, and Tactics. Square at the top of their game.
The original Silent Hill has probably the most memorable opening for me. It establishes the tone of the game perfectly.
Resident evil.💯 It was goofy but should get honorable mention
the opening of Mass Effect 2 is one of my favs for sure
Best game opening? Final Fantasy VII is etched into my mind. When I was first even thinking about looking at buying a new console, my friend showed me that opening among many others on a VHS tape. I watched FF7 over and over as it stood out as how to take an entire game world and wordlessly take it from Midgard to the player controlled cloud!
I really like the intro for Kingdoms of Amalur
Onimusha 3 has the greatest opening of all time in my opinion. It’s like a short kung fu film with fight choreography by Donnie Yen. I used to start the game just to watch the opening.
#1 should be Call of Duty MW2. Greatest PS1 game!
For Greatest Video Game Openings: The very first “God of War” for the PS2. It starts off with the main protagonist about to commit suicide, then we jump back three weeks to see how we got here. It just grabs your attention right away!
For a classic opening I think nothing beats soul blade on the PS1 such a classic
To name a bunch that didn't make the list; Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wipeout 3, Front Mission 3, Grand Theft Auto 2, Xeno Gears, Star Ocean 2, Tomb Raider III, Diablo, R-Type Delta, Tactics Ogre, Armored Core.
Kingdome Hearts 3 gets me going. Ill listen to it in the shower to start my day.
