Didn't they mention earlier that it's not that the jokes are bad, but that the jokes were made before Goku was even a bad father? Like it was making fun of him being a bad father when in the story everyone only found out he had a child like that day.
The joke doesn't make sense in the context of the story.
Toriyama himself agrees Goku is a bad dad, and would probably enjoy the jokes.
@@alderstifen7738 I agree, if there was a problem, it's that they jumped the gun and started making fun of goku being a bad dad before he did anything wrong. imo goku was a decent dad before the tail end of the frieza arc. before that "Imma just stay in space training for a couple yrs instead of returning home to my concerned family w/o offering any explanation and then come back like it was nbd" thing. some of it is funny and can be considered set-up ig but yeah
I love Taka but some of his Dragon Ball opinions are the polar opposite of my own and that is one of them.
No, I will not be taking any criticisms. Goku may not be the daddest dad to ever dad, but he's not the worst either, he had sound reasons for most of what bad faith critics point at when they say that, he regretted the senzu bean thing within an hour of doing it (why do you think he sacrificed himself? Huh?), he stayed dead because he was really aware he was the weirdness/danger magnet that he is and had probably come to that realisation before that point, and what happened when he did turn up again for his one day? Oh yeah, _Majin fucking Buu!_

12:40 Goku is the *kinder* father. Vegeta is the more *attentive* father. Neither are what I'd call "great parents", but they both try in their own way...
I’d say vegeta grew to be the better parent overall due to the attentiveness alone.
But Goku’s streak is way nicer. Like for most people, it doesn’t take beating your son or them literally dying for you to realize you cared about them 💀
Most of goku’s absences on Gohan were mostly attributed to “he’s dead or injured” most of which were completely out of either of their control.
Goku regularly spends time with and expresses his care for Gohan in a ton of ways.
Biggest thing I’m surprised fans forgot is the fact that goku actually rarely if ever even forced Gohan to fight. He often would just tell Gohan to leave if anything. To this day he doesn’t even care that Gohan is weaker or that he doesn’t want to be a fighter.
The cell incident just gave him negative social credits💀
But it’s a travesty because, despite the fact that vegeta, goku and piccolo all did messed up things, it’s goku who’s branded as the monster here.
Like people are willing to look passed the 50 things vegeta or piccolo did to kids but not goku?

Goku is a bad dad because he doesn’t know how to be a dad. He’s not abusive, he just doesn’t know what he’s doing, but he still love his son.
They’re bad parents by human standards. By Saiyan standards, they’re probably well above and beyond. Which is, of course, the conflict that makes the human/alien relationship interesting.
"I WILL KILL AS MANY PEOPLE AS I HAVE TO AS LONG AS YOU ARE ONE OF THEM!!!" is still one of my favorite lines from the show.

I like the contrast between the heroes constantly arguing and criticizing each other, and the supposedly evil androids getting along and enjoying each others company.
yeah, with yamcha and goku gone, krillin and gohan are the only ones that arent bickering with vegeta lmao
even before he died you could see how the group was just falling apart...
I’m always sorta mixed about it but am genuinely pretty interested in how they portrayed the dragon team as less like people who are all equally friends and more like acquaintances or co-workers.
It kinda bums me out at times and makes them funny but often too mean, however so much of the west, (honestly even in japan) try so hard to push these guys like they’re the Avengers or some shit with team names and junk, when in reality, they’re mostly just martial artists who occasionally band together to save the world
Honestly it feels like toriyama forgot this aspect of them sometimes.
But it is cool to see Taka, Lani and Kaiser notice the little things in the distinction of their group in the manga (like tiens hatred of vegeta that’s often overlooked) and actually expound on it and make them into characters with an actual dynamic rather than goku’s cheerleaders.
It’s not perfect, but it’s a pretty inspired take imo
I believe some stories just need group dynamics like this in order to tell more interesting
When executed well, it can be cool to see characters who aren’t 100% cool and familiar with each other for valid reasons.
It DOES bum me out that this version of tien is somehow yamcha’s best friend tho-

Also how Vegeta, still evil, violent, sadistic, and seemingly has no concern for anyone's wellbeing but his own, is casually murdering random innocent people who happen to cross his path for no reason. The only reason the androids ever come into conflict with the real good guys is because they happen to be reluctant allies of Vegeta, see him in danger, and come to his rescue. They're all reluctantly forced into conflict due to Vegeta being a dumbass and no other reason
@@marvelsandals4228 They were going to come to heads with Androids eventually though given that they were doing whatever they pleased while disregarding other people. That and they would actively seek out Goku so there's that.

I'm just glad Yamcha was there for Goku when he needed him. Yes, there wasn't much Yamcha could do, but at least he was trying to help.
Yamcha was most likely already remembering how Goku called him his friend before they went out training. He prefered staying at the side of someone who actually appreciate him rather than follow those who constantly talk smack about him. Don't know if it was all completely intentional, but it's a cute bit of continuity if it is.
Maybe another reason goku died in trunks tfs timeline was because he didn’t have a good friend like Yamaha around to wait at his side and cheer him on to encourage him to wake up again.

I'm sure this annoys some people, but I love when Lani recites his favorite lines (which is a lot of them lol) as they're happening. You can tell he is immensely proud of his work and it always puts a smile on my face.
Always makes me happy to see a voice actor or actress who enjoys their work enough to recite their favorite lines as they are happening.
It annoys the fuck out of me that's for sure. I mean come on we get it you're the voice of krillin, vegeta and piccolo WOOHOO YOU'RE SO COOL but there's really no need. This annoys almost as much as the way kaiser pronounces GOKU as GOKUUUU
Honestly it reminds me of back when the show was ongoing, me and my friends in high school would get together and marathon the most recent episodes whenever a new one came out, and we would quote the lines as they were happening

There's just so many good and comedic lines in every series TFS put out.

I actually don't mind that scene. She's focusing on helping how she can and she knows Goku took the magic future medicine and he will get better.
I started reading the dragon ball manga and her lack of care for Goku after the Saiyan arc annoys me more. Even Yajirobe was pointing it out and at the end, looked at Goku and asked "Can I punch her?"

One thing I love about Abridged 17 and 18 is that their personalities seem *very* consistent with their canonical backstories. They're just kids who've gone through some traumatizing shit and ended up with so much power that they no longer have to face any consequences for their actions.
Not sure how that ends up with them being genocidal in Trunks's timeline. I blame Gero.
Headcannon that 16 caused that change as he showed them to care for someone who was different from them who also appreciated life. Mixing the terror cell imposed and the appreciation 16 gave them turned them from non empathetic characters into people who just want normal lives.
probably, considering that Gero never showed up in the future time line in front of the Z Fighters ( At least as far as Bulma knows ) its possible that he spent a little more time tuning them to be more controllable, lowering their destructive power to be a bit closer to his own as they are weaker then the present time line versions and probably trying to reprogram them to be more easily controlled or at least more directed towards his goal of killing Goku and his friends, which after they completed that goal just turned into Kill everyone since their reprogramming didn't really have a stop setting.
And either things did play out like they did here where Gero and Android 19 showed up but were forced to retreat probably due to Piccolo and were killed like we saw when 17 and 18 woke up, or Gero woke them up early after his adjustments and was still murdered because he thought a remote control off switch you needed to physically press was a good idea against two people insanely faster then himself.
You kinda said it yourself. They're traumatized teens with enough physical powers to never face any consequences for anything ( until Future Trunks final confrontation with them). With no real goal to focus their attention, becoming sociopathic killing machines is a pretty likely scenario. In hindsight, Trunks meddling kinda did save both timelines from the start, by keeping Goku around and changing the circumstances around the androids activations.

I think #16 is one factor. Some also say that it's related to why the Androids are stronger in the main timeline. Gero's robots saw that the Z-Warriors were training during the three-year time skip, so he made #17 and #18 stronger. However, to do that, he had to give them more independence, because his control protocols also acted as power limiters.

I always liked the fact that you guys played up the fact that the androids in the main timeline aren’t really that evil. Whenever I’m rewatching season 3 I always feel really bad when Cell comes in and tears them apart.

They are still a bit evil, on the road trip they do a lot of immoral stuff but who hasn't? Literally everybody in the group has been in a antagonistic role.
TFS tried to make their redemption a bit more believable which I think they mostly succeeded at.

yeah I never really got the shock factor of that one either. Its not a common insult here in the Netherlands (whenever english is spoken) but it's not at all as terrible as some people in the USA seem to believe it is.
I'm not a native speaker, but when I was still learning English in my formative years 3/4 of my biggest influences where Brits, one of whom lived in Australia at the time, so I never got why Americans where so sensible to that word in particular.
Future Trunks is basically the first son who gradually teaches Vegeta how to be a better father, yet has to bear the brunt of who Vegeta used to be. Kid Trunks is the younger brother who only knows Vegeta as the person he became after his time with Future Trunks (and just the passage of time in general) influenced him into caring about his family. Time travel aside, it's a pretty common situation even if Vegeta definitely went way over the line at his worst.
And by Bulla he's mellowed out enough to realize he should handle his kids with care
Vegeta punches child Trunks in the face for doing exactly what he asked him to do and then almost blew up his wife, he sucks.

I always kinda interpreted the Androids' relationship as two teenagers and their special needs brother, I love how they're immediately kind towards 16 and always try to include him.

The "Robot brother" archetype 17 and 18 do with 16 was one of the most heartwarming things. He was not at all related to them, but he too was changed into an android, and in that they find kinship.
He wasn't changed into an android, he was mechanical and purely robotic. Nothing biological at all.

Alas, a regular dude catching a Kamehameha to the face does not a corpse often leave.

When it comes to TFS's depiction of the Cyborgs/Androids/Artificial-Humans, I love the fact that no outside source prompted their "heel"-face turn. They just naturally grew as people by bonding with each other and dealing with differing levels of empathy, with 16 being the moral compass of the group. There's not a scene with them pre-cell that doesn't make me chuckle

So in regard to Chi-Chi’s portrayal in English, her funimation actress said in an interview with Geekdom101 that Chris Sabat told her since day one that she and Goku were meant to be how they are in the Japanese version, but they obviously neglected the accents because they wanted to stay consistent with the ocean dub for obvious reasons. But she did say that Chris told her that they were essentially the equivalent to “White Trash.”
I could listen to Kaiser do character analysis all day. I hope he starts a series where he gets deep on the characters and goes in depth of who they are

@@MSCDonkeyKong Technically they might have got in on "Killed by Frieza and his men..." because Nappa and Vegeta were technically working for Frieza at that point. Though in Abridged canon Nappa specifically says they didn't get revived because he didn't consider himself working for Frieza.
...the people Dr Gero killed in the city at the beginning of the saga wouldn't be revived either...I didn't think of that before either
I liken the relationship between 16 and 17 to that angle where WWF put X-Pac in a tag team with Kane, and they had a bunch of bits where X-Pac was trying to teach him how to be a normal dude and such. I find that angle a lot more charming than I probably should.
Also, as a perennial Chi-Chi apologist, I'm glad someone said it. Chi-Chi deserved better.

Honestly can we get more commentary? It’s great having scenes broken down, the creation of jokes, jokes that flew over my head, the route you guys chose for each character’s development, and more. The best part of this series to me is the nostalgia I feel watching these episodes each week with the same anticipation I had for them when you guys released them, and the cherry on top is I’m watching it with the creators. 10/10 stuff keep it up guys and thank you for the memories over the years.

I'm fascinated by how power levels worked out. Somehow 16 was the powerful android. 17/18 were less powerful cyborgs, 19/20 even less than that.
@@alfredgomez3128 well 16 was super powerful but faulty, at least in part because of his infinite energy generator. 17 and 18 had the same infinite energy and could get stronger through training but were unreliable by virtue of having human will. 19 and Gero(20) has fully mechanical bodies and hypothetically could absorb energy to increase their power to a nearly unlimited degree.
Granted, most of the details came up later due to Toriyama's editor hating the character designs and encouraging (pressuring) him to create a new "real" villain; that's why 19 and Gero didn't last long and why Cell was introduced after 17 and 18. And then Cell "looked like he would transform" but Semi-Perfect didn't look strong enough. It wasn't til the Buu saga that Toriyama was given more freedom to do what he liked but I digress.
Each of the Android and Cyborg types have different strengths and weaknesses and it's really just narrative power scaling that makes one better than the other. Like, if they were more loyal then Gero could've used 16, 17, or 18 to generate unlimited power for 19 and himself, for example.

If Toriyama cared about worldbuilding after DragonBall, 16 would have been that clueless but devastatingly potent character that opted for pacifism. Likely cause Gero wouldn't want his rebuilt son in battle, but if stuck in battle would win.
The sheer fact Cell exists means he can do it.

She knew full well what Goku was about when they got together. She witnessed crazy things, surrounding Goku. And yet, she still got together with him.
Any form of normal or quiet, she essentially gave up the instant she married him and had Gohan.
Agreed. She KNOWS Goku. Had a few years or so to figure out, that Goku will never understand or want her way of life. He is literally genetic built to fight, even if he's not naturally evil now

Everyone forgets they had like a good 7 years or so as a family. Like they had at least 4 years between them getting married and having Gohan till Goku introduces him to the gang at the beginning of Z.
Then another 3 years waiting for the Androids. Sure there was training in there but you can't tell me in 3 years those three didn't have a shit ton of family time

I agree, I don't feel bad for chichi bc she knowingly (ig, since she barely knew him when she decided to marry him and mainly did so bc he kicked her crotch) married goku w/o considering what a lackluster husband/father he'd be. and her attempts to protect gohan usually come off less like she's concerned abt him and more like she just values schoolwork over the fate of the world. she has her moments of course, esp later in the series, but usually she's in dire need of a reality check. I mean she got pissed at goku not immediately recognizing her/remembering his "promise" to her when--in the manga--they only met once like 6 yrs prior and she looked totally different...

I remember that "Dude, my truck!" line, haha--it was actually for Kai's dub, not DBZ's, but yeah, it was meant for the Nicktoons TV version and I think it did slip into the initial uncut release; I think later releases had it fixed.
And totally agree with Kaiser's love for writing the 16-18 dynamic because it's definitely one of my favorite things about rewatching S3 too. Also, "I will kill as many people as I have to as long as you are one of them" is classic.

My favorite part of the Android saga is that if the Z fighters would have talked to them in the Lab, they probably would have been chill and would have been hype for Bulma to help them not be scientific monsters. They were power tripping but they were much more angry about the whole mad scientist abuse than really out for killing Goku.
