Rory - would love it if you could pass the following along to the eTron GT team. As a long time RS GT driver, I hope you can relate. I have a 2023 RS GT and my wife has a 2021 Tesla Model S Performance. I've long said that my Audi is a better car with terrible software (I've worked as a software product manager in FANG companies for the past 20 years). Two things that both my wife and I have to do daily with our cars: charge them and raise the suspension to avoid scraping the nose on obstacles like speed bumps. The Tesla is seamless for both, while the Audi is terrible. The Tesla has to option to automatically geotag spots where you raise the suspension, and will do this automatically afterward when the car approaches this location. This, combined with other automation features, mean that when my wife leaves, the garage door closes automatically, the car raises its suspension, and she just drives away (her car does the reverse process when she comes home). On the other hand, I have to remember to tap the Audi MMI multiple times (why not map a physical button on the console for this?), which irritates me every time I leave our home as our street has speed bumps on it and I have to close our garage door manually. This also clutters up the MMI, as the parking proximity sensor often triggers at the same time. For charging, the Tesla has an automated charging door cover. When I press a button on the charger, the door pops open on its own. When I remove the charger, it closes. On my Audi, the charging door is no different than I had on my beat up Honda 20 years ago. When it is clean, it is a fingerprint magnet. When it is dirty, I get grime on my fingers and I worry about scoring the paint by repeatedly pressing on it to pop it open and close it. Why not do something similar for the Audi home charger, and put a button on the key fob for use when using public chargers? These are small things, but they irritate me every I get in the car (in addition to the constant inconsistencies I get from the MMI software). They are the sort of thing I would have expected Audi to address when going after the market leader for EV sports cars.
These cars are not super low exotics - are you sure you even need to raise them to clear a speed bump?' 2025 Taycans all have power charge port covers, likely Audi will have the same.
You are spot-on. Software has been the distinct differentiator for Tesla. The relative shortfalls on things like material and build quality didn't even come close to the overall experience of Tesla ownership. In EV Land, software and design rule. High-performance/high-efficiency motors and batteries, and reliable/accessible charging networks will proliferate, but ultimately won't differentiate as much as the interactivity (with drivers/passengers AND the hardware) and more emotional design aspects. But after more than three years with a Model 3, the experience has only gotten better (not to mention very real, top-notch customer service), and I wouldn't think twice about passing on a more plush interior to get the perks from an expertly designed software environment.
